EDIT: I WAS a member, and no longer am as there is no value in this membership. Anyone who goes to this gym can verify below observations. There is enough pickleball in the area to not have to go here. And the weight equipment is antiquated. DO NOT GO HERE! THEY RAISING RATES AGAIN! NO POOL, NO SAUNA, NO SPA. Gym is totally
mediocre, restaurant is totally empty 99% of the time and offers nothing worthwhile.

Someone else buy and revamp this place to save the gorge gym scene. Because they are price gouging and giving customers nothing in return!

There is room for this to be a great place, it is just terrible now.

UPDATE: I have cancelled my membership due to reasons mentioned, and that is correct I am no longer a member. And that is your only response!?

This is only to HELP the community. We need to bring awareness to this issue. There can be an affordable place where people actually want to go, that has amenities. This is still not it.

No sauna, not cold plunge,
No hot tub, no pool. Front desk employees mostly ignore you, but there’s an empty bar!?

Used to be a member and was thinking of rejoining until I saw the MAJOR price increase. Used to pay $98/month and it’s now $119/month. Absolutely unjustifiable, especially with the pool and sauna gone.

I also wish the college student membership didn’t require having a family member already enrolled. The gym could definitely attract more students and increase revenue by removing that restriction!!

I like the gym but no one seems to wipe the equipment down when they're done sweating all over it. Half the time there are no sanitary wipes. For the amount of money you pay per month I wish it was kept cleaner. Yuck!

A decent gym if you are not looking to play pickleball
If you are looking to play pickleball.....JUST DON'T....unless you want to be tied to a computer/phone to reserve a court one week out at just the right time. If you miss that time you can forget it. There have been promises of new courts but for those of use who have paid for a membership to a gym where we cannot get to use the membership for it's intended purpose these are empty promises that leave you with a empty wallet: did I mention it is not inexpensive?

Update: I appreciate the owner quickly responding to my review. Their reply seems to have missed a major point I made - that there are some simple updates that could be made to make the facilities better for those of us who don't play racket sports. Just updating a few pieces of equipment would be great. I did not say that all the changes they made are bad - specifically, the facility is cleaner, the staff are great and now most fitness classes are included in membership. All good things! Althoigh I didn't mention it in my initial review, the locker rooms and bathroom facilities are nice, too. Thank you. It'd be great to hear if there are plans to update some of the older equipment in the fitness pavilion. I appreciate the owners’ efforts and wanted to provide specific feedback based on my ideas, which are shared by others I know who are members - so this is not just one person. Thank you! I think the club has great potential.

Overpriced. Much of the freestanding weight equipment in the new gym is old and not functioning that well. The new owners poured a lot of money into tennis and pickle ball and creating a characterless restaurant/bar space that is highly underutilized and doesn't make sense for a gym. The result: good spaces for the tennis/pickleball players but a less functional space for those of us who are focused on cardio and weights. While I like the windows in the new fitness pavilion, the space feels cramped and when walking into the fitness pavilion from the hall that goes to the weight room, there's not enough of a path - I feel like I'm going to walk into people doing mat/floor exercises. The space wasn't well thought out. There is no free wall space on the non-windowed walls for stretching.

That said, staff if nice enough, the gym is clean and, it's a convenient location for me, so I will continue to be patron if the prices don't increase much - they are expensive considering the quality of the equipment.

If the owners invested in some new equipment in the pavilion and maybe rethought the layout a bit, that would make a big difference. Before the pickleball court, there was plenty of space for freestanding exercises, but no HVAC so the it was a hothouse in the summer so it's nice that the new space has AC.

The owners were dismissive when I complained about the big price increase when they made that increase almost a year ago - I can see I'm not the only one who received a dismissive response by reading various other reviews.

In addition to not offering a student discount, the gym doesn't offer any sort of senior discount for people 65 and over. I wouldn't personally benefit from this, but believe it's the right thing to do - or they could limit the discount to seniors on a fixed income to make it equitable.

My recommendation to the owners is to get new freestanding weight equipment for the pavilion as needed, reduce the size of your underused dining/bar area and make it a more interesting, with some more comfortable seating. I did learn that classes are now included with the membership, which was a good change to make. Listen to your clients. If some of the changes I recommend are made, I will consider revising my review.

Hands-down, the best gym in Hood River, and the entire Gorge. There just isn’t anything that can compare. The team is always super helpful, nice, and willing to go out of their way to make my family’s experience better. The amount of space between rooms and equipment is at least double the size of anything else in the area. The equipment is nicer and newer. The amenities are nicer and newer. They have a kids club to give parents a workout break! Etc…

The negative reviews on here are primarily a result of their recent remodel and update; which removed the old pool and replaced it with pickle ball courts. Let me just say, while that might be disappointing there is no longer a pool, those Pickleball courts are busy every single day. And it makes the gym way more social than it previously was.

Living in Hood River is expensive enough. And 99% of fitness places offer a college student discount. But not HRAC. They charge a whopping $159/month rate...which is actually MORE than the already expensive adult rate at $139/month!!!
I've been a member for a long time and watched membership prices drastically increase while family membership options decrease. You tear out the pool/spa and add a drinking pub? We're not paying for that! We just want a place where we can work out as a family at an affordable price. Good riddance HRAC. Hello Snap Fitness for $65/month.

I can't say enough good things about this club! The new owners are fantastic, and have put A LOT of time, energy and effort into making this club a top notch facility.

The remodel was an incredible transformation. Now after enjoying a bike, Zumba or barre class, you can grab a snack and beverage with your family/friends and catch a game on one of their 3 huge TV's!

Their new pickleball courts have added a whole new group of members to the facility. It's really becoming a central part of the community, and I can personally say I have made many good friends there. Thank you Dorothy and Sudeep, for making such a wonderful, family friendly place for our town.

We are more than disappointed that this athletic club demonstrated interest (and commitment) in our programming for teenage female athletes, only to break the established agreement- leaving us to share this news with our athletes and their families. I find leadership and management to be unprofessional and hasty in their decision making and communications.

I've been coming to the sports club for 20+ yrs. The big draw is that this club has always had an impressively broad variety of activities and equipment. It was also kinda dirty, missing equipment parts, poorly managed, but it got the job done and was worth the relatively pricey membership if you wanted to have access to a bunch of different sports.

It's a harder sell these days. Remodel was a good idea (especially fixing the basic infrastructure of the building) but a lot of it went into a depressingly windowless sit-down restaurant for some reason. Prices went up dramatically while activities and amenities were phased out. Seems like the owners want to run it better and improve the space but don't really know how to pick the right issues to tackle. It may still be worth the premium price if you think you'll use absolutely everything the club has to offer, but there's a lot more local competition to consider these days if not.

My husband & I have been members of the HRAC (formerly HRSC) for about 21 years now. The current owners are extremely dedicated to making this club a place for not only the members physical well-being, but also their mental well-being. The tennis & pickleball community there has become like family for us. So much so that if I go a day (or, heaven forbid, 2) without checking into the club I feel like I'm missing out on something. That something is friends, fun, & fitness. We really appreciate all that the new owners have done & are continuing to do to make the club a pleasure to be part of. Kudos to all employees that work there too.
P.S. Chef Julius & Opus 3 are the cherries on top!

Things that have happened while I was a member at HRAC:
- I’ve witness children on equipment who are not old enough, but no employees stopping them from endangering themselves and to a more petty point using equipment that an adult could use

- changing rates midway through a contract and not honoring the original rate. Inexplicably giving arguments that offer no justification other than β€œI’m going to so what you going to do about it”. We leave is the appropriate response.

- reported lack of collars for squat rack and bench, never purchased such a cheap piece of equipment.

- notified staff that it may be beneficial to educate members on appropriate places to do deadlifts i.e. not on the strip of artificial turf but at the squat rack with proper padding, but nothing was done.

- staff being too aloof to notice local teens sneaking their buddies in.

- getting rid of amenities (pool, sauna, steam room) and increasing rate

- adding a sub par restaurant (side note, what kind of gym has a restaurant serving a fudge brownie lol)

- the trainers there know what they’re doing. The administrative/operations staff seems uneducated and/or apathetic. Too young to care or have been around too long and stuck in their ways.

- the gym seems to be stuck in pre-internet era still using 3 ring binders to book tennis courts and group fitness class with zero regard for technology available or the environment.

I am revising my review based on the club's quick response to my concerns. I appreciate the response, although still very frustrated by the price increase from $125 to $174/month (w/out tennis), after sticking with them through a remodel that was extremely disruptive (for a new front area and bar/ not gym area) and no compensation for the little equipment available. Once barely completed, they increased the price but no longer have a pool or sauna. It's so much higher than other gyms locally, I'm shocked.

I've been a member for over 15 years and regularly attend classes and use the tennis facilities. Since the change in ownership, I've seen huge positive changes in both the facility and the programs. The recent renovation improved the health and safety of the building which was in dire straits, fixed longstanding issues with the courts, and added a beautiful reception, restaurant, women's locker room and outdoor seating area. The fitness class instructors are top notch and the class offerings are becoming more robust and well rounded. The tennis instruction continues to be outstanding at all levels and the junior program continues to expand and improve. The owners and staff are responsive and open to suggestions and go out of their way to ensure members are taken care of. The changes are not going to please everyone, change never does, but for my family, the renovation has been a welcome and appreciated improvement!

The bare minimum gym. I'll try to keep this brief, but to conduct an appropriate review, I'd have to contact Netflix to create a limited series. Historically, the gym has been overpriced, dirty, and broken equipment, but you can still get a decent workout. Fast forward to today, still overpriced, dirty, broken equipment, but now amenities have been taken away from us (sauna, pool, hot tub) and in place of those, we now get a bar. Because hood river clearly lacks establishments that serve alcohol. I've tried having a conversation with one of the new owners, Dorothy, but I was met with condescending and hostile emails. I've been trying to have a conversation with her for 3 months now. I tried explaining how some of the equipment is outdated and will shear your joints. The large clumps of hairballs and smudged mirrors are a nice touch. Thick dirt/dust throughout the floors.Toddlers running through the weight area. I tried to offer science-based articles showing the benefits of regular sauna use in hopes of bringing it back- no response. This is no longer an athletic club. If you took a quick glance at the owners, you can see why it is no longer a health-based facility. It's turning into a retirement club. Funding has been spent on the facade to bait and switch the members. Like a fitness mullet. Updated in the front until you get to the decrepit back portion. My question has still gone unanswered, so I'll ask again: Why are my membership dues being used to further disease in the body rather than prevent it at a health facility?

Membership has gone from $90 per month to $134… For a 50% increase in membership cost they have taken away the steam-room, pool, jacuzzi, and sauna. But! They remodeled! Now there is a bar with unhealthy S.A.D. food and other eye candy.

There has been a huge loss of service for a massive price hike. We understand inflation, but this is nuts. Get less. Pay way more!

I am not a fan of this place. 100$ for two people. The place is run down, I signed up because you had a pool and spa equipment and now you are getting rid of it.
But in a way I'm glad you did. The last time I was in the pool there were ramen noodles in the pool. People still spat in the sauna. Old equipment that haven't been fixed the whole almost year that I had been there. And for some reason they thinking adding a bar 🍺 there is going to solve things! Oh here's a beer gain back all that you just lost in working out. If I wanted to go to a bar I would have not a gym. I do not recommend this place at all.

My wife and I had our first workout, or "Gym Date" as we call it, at the Gorge Athletic Club last night and I have to say I was 10/10 floored by my expierience. My wife was happy too and we all know happy wife happy life. We left our workout feeling like we were leaving the Spa. The equipment was awesome, the staff was amazing, and the facilities were state of the art. Before all of this though I have to say I got a tour from Jordan, one of the gym administrators and he was so kind, so knowledgeable and he answered all of my questions, concerns and was I believe a foreshadowing of how my family and I will be cared for at this gym. I can't wait for our next gym date. Thank you Gorge Athletic Club, Raven Rutherford

Please take a moment to read this 5 star review

I used to work out at Snap Fitness ($45/month, and too small of a gym) a few years ago, then jumped to the Power Station ($70/month). Power Station was good, but for the same price, I decided to join the GAC since they had even more to offer.

The experience has been great throughout my membership. They have a pretty open lifting area, where people can do free squats, powercleans, deadlifts, and so forth. There are machines in the other open area where people do crossfit related workouts and cardio. On a given busy day, there's never really issues of being too crowded in having to wait for a given machine to become free.

As for other amenities, I was drawn to the basketball court and sauna, both of which were easily accessible and always clean. The gym itself was always pretty clean from what I recall, so the staff does a great job keeping it so. There's even a pool, hot tub, and I believe a kid's day care!

Although I didn't do classes, you can pay just a bit more per month in getting access. That's a huge win. It's an easy way to get into Boot Camps or whatever else, as they provide schedules on a weekly basis. They also have personal trainers who are great people.

The price per month may be high to some, as I've read here, but your other choice is the Power Station, and the GAC has way more to offer for nearly the same price. If you want a cheap deal, go check out Snap Fitness, but don't expect much for your return. It's a small workout area and you're always bumping into people. I think really the only benefit aside from their space is that they have a studio for team classes.

The GAC takes care of their employees and you're ultimately supporting local, which matters the most. They're friendly, helpful, and I highly recommend checking them out as you look to get into better shape!

Broken equipment plagues this place with dirty bathrooms that get cleaned twice a week. I am not a "super athlete", but my family has been members for years. Indoor tennis and hand ball courts, a very successful bicycle program that is crowded in the winter, and treadmill, and step machines for those who want variety. There is a very good weight room for all levels needing weights. A large variety of classes for children, youth, women, men, and elders. Water and step aerobic, yoga, fitness and, swimming classes, and more. Personall trainers are available for additional fees. The staff training and ability is very good. I like the people. There are places in town that may be a little better in one area or another, but for over all fitness services and a wide variety of staff/teachers the club is very good. The strength and weaknesses in certain areas has varied over the years, but they have worked to expand and keep it up. The Sports club is very a good value for those who want the quality, variety, and will use it regularly. The people we have met there are nice to know and work with too.

SO OVERPRICED!!! We got day passes at $18 per person just to use the showers and pool facility. We were kicked out of the jacuzzi after only 15 minutes because it was out of chlorine...so we felt a little put out after that. Then there was the hair ball in the pool, and the sauna wasn't on, so we had to wait for it to heat up. After only 30 minutes, we decided it definitely wasn't worth the insane high price, and went to ask for our money back...or at least half. They refused. We wrote this review because they refused. The customer is always right...especially if they're paying $18 for a less than sanitary environment.
