The customer service at this location needs improvement. The front desk staff is often on their phones and can come across as rude when asked questions. Many of the employees seem disengaged, which creates a poor first impression for members. Additionally, the elevator is frequently out of service, making it difficult for individuals with physical conditions to access the garage.

On a positive note, the gym is clean, but the equipment is quite outdated compared to the 82nd location.

I’ve gone to so many gyms even other LA Fitness locations and have not had the same experiences I have here. I love these trainers also. I’ve done two sessions so far and I walk away with knowledge that has made my workouts five times more efficient with half As much effort because I’m doing things right to get the results I want. Decades of knowledge at this location and older
non-egotistical trainers. Can’t say enough they are also beyond flexible and really have worked with me to make my sessions happen even when it’s been tight and difficult

They sent me a free trial pass in my email, so I thought I would go in and check it out. I literally checked in and the condescending tall white guy needed a photo of me in their system. Walked out after two minutes because the gym was overly crowded, no place to stretch, and they don’t even have a deadlift platform.

UPDATE: Aug-2025

Reducing my rating to two stars. The facilities have deteriorated significantly over the last year with worn out padding making use of resistance machines painful, and frequent service outages for cardio machines. The water fountains are often broken and/or unmaintained, AC issues on warm days, lighting failures that take a long time to repair, and most of the good trainers have departed, possibly due to repeated changes in management.

Would be 5 stars if they cleaned the bathrooms more often. It reeks of pee and the smell carries into the sauna and locker room. Like another user mentioned, a door between the bathroom and the rest of the locker room / sauna would probably do wonders for the smell.

Also, a queue system for the pool would be nice. It could be as simple as a whiteboard with marker or some paper that people write their names and start times on.

Otherwise, the parking is nice, the pool is clean enough and a good temperature, and the staff are all kind and helpful

I’ve been coming to this LA Fitness for almost two years, and I’m absolutely livid right now. This place is super close to my house and has all the equipment I need, and most of the staff are great, but that doesn’t excuse what happened today. I go to shower after my workout, forget my sandals, and step on a freaking bloody needle in the shower! Are you kidding me?! As someone who works with and studies bloodborne pathogens, this is beyond disgusting, it’s straight-up dangerous! The cap was on, so it didn’t break my skin, but that’s not the point. I shouldn’t be dodging needles in a gym I’m paying to use!

The locker rooms here have always been a filthy, grimy mess, unchanged for days, maybe weeks, and it’s unacceptable. I told the front desk, and the guy apologized and handled it quickly, but that’s not enough. Why am I paying for a membership when I’m risking my health just taking a shower? They just splurged on a shiny new Pilates room, but can’t be bothered to scrub the locker rooms? What kind of priorities are those?! This is a massive wake-up call, and if they don’t get their act together and start cleaning properly, I’m done with this place. This is ridiculous and dangerous!

After long and careful consideration I chose LA Fitness and this location. Even knowing that cars get broken into and there is literally human poop on the sidewalk, I decided on this location. Not only this LA FITNESS got dirty floors in the locker room . Almost all the locations around my area got cracked swimming pool walls, wrong clocks hours (near swimming pool area)and the lack of cleaning 🧹 lockers room. I believe they might be short staffed in all the LA FITNESS around PDX AREA. Also, maybe this gym short of money to fix their swimming pool walls , occasionally dirty swimming pool water and hot spa water feels like its dirty water sometimes with little weird smell. I was a member from last year. Because all of this , I’m thinking to change a newer cleaner gym .

Overall, I love this gym! But the reason the entire place keeps getting complaints about how hot it is, it's not the air conditioner, it's the fact that the bathrooms/locker rooms/pool and spa areas aren't physically blocked in! So the humidity from the showers, pool, spa, showers escapes into the ENTIRE gym! They need to put doors in and lock in the humidity from the pool, spa, locker rooms and it wouldn't be so hot in there!

The notches for the weights on the mechanical scale in the men’s locker room are worn out and loose so you can’t get an accurate measurement. I brought it up with the person with the mustache at the front desk, asking if they could fix or replace the scale. This is the second time I brought it up with them. They said no, but that I could ask a personal trainer to bring out an electric scale each time I wanted to weigh myself. Really? After I swim, I have to put on clothes, leave the locker room, track someone down, and ask them to get a scale out? This is a basic maintenance issue. Your scale isn’t working properly. Mustache refused to do anything about it other than their suggestion about the digital scale, and seemed annoyed that I wasn’t satisfied with their solution. Also, areas of the walls in the pool area have plaster that’s falling apart, and metal door frames that are rusting out at the bottom. And the sauna smells bad. It seems like maintenance isn’t their top priority.

★ 3

It’s an alright gym but it has some considerable flaws.
What is good is that overall variety of machines and its quality is good. Except the problem with benches explained below.

What is not good:

First and the biggest one is air conditioning. It’s usually something between atrocious and barely acceptable. But mostly it is hot inside and the worst of it is that there is zero air flow. Sometimes it’s literally NO AIR to breathe. Like in a microwave from which there is no escape. Even when the weather is not hot - there is no air flow inside. The worst situation with AC is at the basketball court.

Second is their benches variety. All of their benches except 1 are unadjustable and that’s a bummer. 2 flat, 2 inclined and 2 90deg. So if you need an inclined bench, you need to wait till one of their 2 inclined benches will be unoccupied. During rush hours it’s mission impossible.

Third - water in faucets are always either very warm or boiling hot. It’s probably good for showers but combine it with very warm temperatures at gym and it will be very unpleasant.

Fourth - the only area that is more or less geared up for functional training is closed for private trainings only. I can’t understand why.

Additionally when I first started with them I had a training session where I requested how to learn some of the weight machines as I had never tried weights before and was coming at it as a beginner. I was really excited to learn but the trainer completely ignored my request and instead said "to try out some squats and pushup" which I already knew how to do. LA Fitness in the Pearl has not had their AC working in the group fitness gym in over a month. After multi complaints by many members nothing has been done. Tried to take a class this am and it was so hot and muggy it was an unhealthy environment. With Portland temps in the high 90s and 100° temps I find this to be a health risk. When classes are scheduled there should be AC. This is fundamental and can’t seem to be accomplished by anyone locally or the corp office. I find it management careless and incompetent.

I moved and came to a new location. I was denied entry and told my membership only applied to WA even though I was told when I joined it worked at all locations and in fact have used it in multiple states. At any rate the only reason I came to this location was to cancel as my closest location is over twenty minutes away. I had to come in person because LAFitness makes it very difficult to cancel online. To make things feel worse, even though I canceled, it doesn’t take effect for two months (per the contract) so i have to continue to pay even though I can’t use it. This LA fitness in downtown Portland by Northrop street is the best LA FITNESS I’ve been after the one in Edison New Jersey. It is spacious, it is clean, the water fountains are clean OH MY GOD!!!! several workouts stations which helps with not having to wait for someone to finish to work out. I rate it 9/10. Everyone wipes down their stations without question. LA fitness in Grand Prairie Texas needs to step up their game. Water station is dirty, not enough workout stations. The only one thing Grand Prairie does better than Portland is the front desk personnel greeting, the ones in Grand Prairie are welcoming, they greet you coming in and leaving. The ones at this facility on Northrop are stoic barely acknowledging you coming in and going out. So I guess the south still has some southern hospitality

It's gotten better cleanliness wise over the last two years. Although the bathrooms are always grotesque when I am there. Pee on the toilets. Stinky. I pay 41.00 a month and all these dues and y'all can't clean the potties? I get it. It's the bathrooms but they really are important. You're trying to show face with the clean machines but the bathrooms are what needs help. Even though you can't see them when you first walk in. Duh, LA fitness. This is why I award 3 stars. All the bells and whistles but I'm afraid to pee there.

My other complaint is that throughout the last two years I've been coming here, employees seem to rotate like they're playing the game hot potato.

Every time I am here, I see a new employee it seems. It can make getting questions answered feel a little annoying and I am sure this is a corporate problem and not the problem of the employees because wow, I never recognize any of the employees. It's weird. But okay! Assuming this is a management issue.

Otherwise it's pretty nice, I like the variety of machines.

Last time I checked the hot tub, the water looked dirty. I wouldn't step foot in it. The men's looker room smells really bad. Other than that it's alright. Lot's of cardio equipment and the weight machines don't have a wait. The pool looks alright, although I haven't personally swam in it yet. You have to pay two months ahead when you start: the first month and the last month. A good thing is that you can put your membership on hold with a $10 monthly charge if you get injured like me. You get a good session with one of their trainers when you start out and they assess and advise you on how to start out which was spot on about me since I haven't worked out in 15 years.

Staff are helpful and pleasant, the gym is well equipped and, so far, all the equipment I've used is in good working order. There is a basketball court and nice lap pool with floor to ceiling windows along one wall, making it very light. And the free larking in a good secure garage with elevator direct to the gym lobby is very convenient in an area of the city where street parking is aometimes difficult.

The gym has all you need to get a workout. I go there a few times a week and I have to say the locker rooms are not very clean. Regularly, they will be out of paper towels or toilet paper and dirty towels might be lying on the ground for a while before staff (or anyone else whose job it’s not) picks it up.
They have been posting about looking for janitors. Maybe if you can’t find a good match, it’s because your offer is not attractive enough? Sorry for the unsolicited advice…

poor temperature control. however the one star is for the crookery that goes on when i have to cancel my membership. the first time, i called and chad told me i had to come in in person. the second time, i came in in person and the guy told me i had to wait for the 'operations manager' to be there, even the though the first time i cancelled a kid who definitely wasn't the operations manager did my cancellation. if it's month to month and i'm not allowed to cancel when i want, it's a scam.

Everyone seems to knock LA Fitness but they really are not that bad. I don't come too regularly, about 4 times per month, but when I do I don't have any issues. I do on occassion have to wait for certain equipment to open up but I also don't do that many machines, so I'm stuck with the few that I do. Anyway, I give them a solid 4 starts.

The kid with the mustache at the front desk has incredibly poor work ethic.

They seem disengaged and uninterested in their responsibilities. It's essential for front desk staff to be diligent and proactive, but this particular staff member rarely meets expectations.

I hope management addresses this issue to ensure a better experience for its members.

This gym has been without AC for 3 months now. It happens every summer and each year the amount of time it's down runs longer. The staff and company don't care and have done little to reduce the heat in the different rooms. After two months of no AC in the spin room they gave us 1 fan! It gets so hot during class that people come close to passing out. If it wasn't for the one teacher i would no longer belong to this gym. Pass on this gym if there's another option out there.

This place is always hot! It's 10 degrees warmer than any other gym I visit. I usually go to the Cedar Hills location and occasionally come to this one, based on my schedule. Makes for a much sweatier workout, which isn't terrible per say. But seems unnecessary.

Else, the gym is a typical LA Fitness. Well laid out, well maintained, busy at typical early evening hours, helpful staff, and easy free parking (in the parking structure).

A/C has broken consistently the past few summers and management/staff could careless so if you enjoy paying to work out in a sauna this is your gym. Water machines are also consistently out of service or barely work. Ceiling lights are either out altogether or constantly flicker for weeks/months on end without being fixed or replaced. Staff/management has a take it or leave it attitude.

Like another commenter here, I was also scammed by the personal training manager, David G. The first training session I had there was with the said David G, he is a very good trainer indeed. He just “forgot” to mention that instead of being paired with a professional trainer like him, I was going to be paired with a rookie trainer. Not only that, after 2 months, when the rookie trainer just disappeared, I couldn’t schedule training sessions because they were no more rookie trainers. Turns out, David G sold me a package that included only access to rookie trainers, again, without mentioning this tiny detail. Had I been made aware of this detail, I would have not bought the package. Also, since there were only master trainers available, I was told I’ll just have to wait till new rookie trainers are available. I had to fight my way through in order to be patched up with one of the master trainers till a new rookie came by. Needless to say, at this point, I felt very unmotivated to workout in this environment. Finally, I canceled, in person, both my membership and personal training package, only to discover in December that I have been billed for PT sessions for the months of October, November and December. I was met with great animosity when I tried to get a refund for these months. I had to call several times, come in person to the location to confront David G. I’m still trying to get my money back from these scammers, they claim I booked PT sessions in October and November, despite me not being a member anymore since October.
Be very careful! These people are shady! If and when you choose to cancel your membership, make sure to get a printed confirmation that they have canceled everything.

Although the staff is very kind and helpful as much I have had a horrible experience here. I went in the sauna after my workout and left my locker unlocked for 15 minutes and someone stole my 400$ jacket and then my keys which they used to try and steal my car but they couldn’t pay to get it out of the garage so they abandoned it but kept my keys… the building had the whole thing on footage but wouldn’t send it to me unless I got the police involved and then I did and obviously with Portland police there was 0 follow up. I had to terminate my membership since someone at this gym was a thief with my car keys. I did got back with my friend as a guest and when I was walking out a very clearly homeless person just walked in while the people at the front desk were distracted with other people. This building needs security for its location. You and your belongings are not safe here.

Wish the elevator wasn’t the primary entry, from parking garage, it’s so slow, and smells terrible.
Also the staff could be a bit friendlier I think in general. If you are not interacting with them directly they don’t seem to be smiley or approachable as one would expect at a gym.

Just one opinion.

In general I love this location and it seems to be very clean, organized and not too over crowded which are all great characteristics when I am looking for a great place to work out.

Recently signed up with their training program, I am optimistic it seems to be set up unlike other training programs I have done at other gyms. Wish me luck!

First they will invite you on a "Free Training Assessment"

From there, they will hard-sell you a training plan. But the worst part of the plan is that they don't care about your results, they care about getting you to give them money to buy some time slots.

They first pitched me a HIIT style workout to build muscle, which I didn't really want to do. They said that's the best way to put on muscle, which was incorrect from what I learned online. They told me that it was the best way because they wanted to sell me several 'different' workouts to justify their program, saying that the body needs a different workout everytime I come to the gym. And for that I need a trainer to tell me what to do.

I said I don't want to continue, I wanted to do more weight training. Sensing that I will not continue with their HIIT-style workouts, they immediately changed the strategy to weight training to retain me. That was the second red-flag.

Now, there are several trainers and you can only work with them at specific times. They get booked out, so it's not like you're working with one trainer consistently. You gotta choose from whichever's available.

The sessions are only 25 minutes each. And because I chose to pay in monthly installments, I can only get four 25 min sessions per month. Then I'd have to wait for the next month to come by to have more sessions. Initially, I needed more sessions to learn my form, the exercises, and the nutrition plan that I should be following. And once I had that, I thought I'd use fewer sessions later in the year, assuming that I bought out all my sessions and I could use them however I wanted.

But no, they only come 4 per month. Even when I had signed the contract for an entire year.

If I say I don't want to continue, I'd have to pay half the price of the remainder of the year and the program will stop immediately. So I get no sessions for walking out.

They cite the contract if you say you want to cancel. So I must pay the entire years worth of training fees. But I only get those sessions when as pay for those installments, not when I need them.

The staff or the process has no flexibility either. Pathetic experience. Please don't fall into this trap. There are far many fitness coaches out there that will get you superior-quality results because they are actually focused on selling you the end result, not selling you sessions.

They make it very difficult to cancel a membership and then rejoin if you decide to. Regardless of what they tell you it was difficult for my boyfriend and I to cancel and when we came back to rejoin after 6 months, LA Fitness was saying we had to pay $10 a month for every month our account was cancelled for for us to rejoin again! Absolutely insane customer service decision on the management side to penalize customers who leave and then want to come back. I will never be rejoining LA Fitness again which is a shame because I did a lot of one on one personal training sessions and cycling classes. On to the next gym!

I recently decided to join LA Fitness and they offer you a personal training assessment in order to help you reach your fitness goals. I met with David Gilyot and he is a GREAT trainer. He is very knowledgeable, understanding, and charismatic. He is able to clarify things and willing to answer any questions. If you are truly dedicated to your fitness goals, he is the guy to contact.

His time and knowledge are both extremely valuable and of course there is going to be a price tag to go along with it. Unfortunately for me it was just out of reach; it costs about $215 a month for the gym membership and the cheapest personal training option.

Hear me out, it sounds like a lot up front but the resources you gain access to are high quality. The measurements they keep track of and the workouts they design, will get you results. The five minute demo workout with David G felt more productive than the whole hour workout I did on my own yesterday. It was already a financial hardship for me to commit to paying their monthly fee, but once I am more financially stable I wouldn’t want to do personal training with anyone else but him. Highly recommend.

I have been coming here for a year+ receiving towels with no more than a nod and someone handing me a towel or two at times. Today I walk in and I am told I would need to upgrade to recieve a towel which is strange and caught me off guard then I am told I have been receiving towels as a courtesy this whole time. Then a snotty staff member tells me I would either have to upgrade or pay for a day rental for towels. This seems like the worst way to force upgrades to memberships and an even worst flex over towels to get that upgrade ball rolling. Definitely switching to 24 hour fitness down the road.
