Some staff and definitely the leadership are very difficult to work with -- demeaning and punitive in their approach to interacting with members. Something needs to change over there. Also sad to say they are not investing in the upkeep of saunas and hot tub in the women's locker room. The hot sauna has an awful sweat smell and the steam sauna has been broken for a month or more. My personal experience activating my Active & Fit membership for my family was unspeakably bad -- similar to other reviewers who have repeated communications and requests with no action being taken and nonsensical replies. UGH. Fix the problem please.

Update: Do you see their response? No attempt to understand or address SAFETY AT THEIR GYM. THEY JUST BRAG ABOUT A POLE STUDIO THAT WILL PUT YOUR SAFETY AT RISK. See they do not take safety seriously.
---
In my opinion, they treat their pole staff and students like second class members because they aren't gym rats. Even though we pay more to access the space then other gym customers. They do not consider dancers/students health and safety to be important to the operation of the gym.

They don't allow you to cancel. Read other reviews! They would rather ruin the credit of low income community members instead of allowing them to cancel. It's old/out dated, crowded, and parking is always full. I tried to cancel because I moved to the opposite side of PDX and didn't want to drive a total of one hour each time I wanted to work out. They refused to cancel. I was forced to pay another six months. I would suggest looking into the Oregon run gyms at community centers around Portland that offer next to no payment for low income Oregonians. Everyone deserves access to health resources (fitness equipment) despite "their poor financial decisions". I'm quoting Lloyd Athletic Club's response to a reviewer who had a financial crisis, attempted to cancel, but instead LAC garnished their wages.

I’ve already left a review before, but after everything that’s happened, I feel compelled to speak up again. I was a teacher who lost my job due to budget cuts, already a tough situation. When I joined the Loyd Center location, I was thrilled; it was close to the school where I worked, and I genuinely enjoyed the experience at first.
But once I lost my job and tried to cancel my membership, I learned the hard way that this company puts profit far above people. They make canceling your membership nearly impossible, no matter your circumstances. Even after explaining my situation, unemployed, struggling financially, they refused to work with me or release me from my contract.
Now, I’m being wage-garnished because of their greed and complete lack of empathy. My account was sent to collections simply because they wouldn’t help me cancel something I couldn’t afford. It’s beyond unethical, it’s PREDATORY.
If this business actually cared about people, they would show compassion and integrity. Instead, they exploit those who fall on hard times. Unless they make this right, I’ll continue warning others: this place will happily ruin your credit rather than treat you like a human being.

Bathrooms stink like mildew. Jacuzzi and other facilities are totally unappealing for that reason. They also close ridiculously early - especially on weekends. Really weird and inconvenient.

But the main reason I am taking the time to write a 1-star review: They say you can cancel your account if you move, but even if you have proof of change of address to another state, Lloyd Athletic Club will make impossible to cancel. My husband has spent hours and hours on the phone and sent all necessary documentation in a timely fashion. Still he was billed for months despite multiple phone calls. Finally got an email that our joint account was successfully closed only to learn a year later than I am in collections for gym membership owed. We moved and cancelled a year ago. This has impacted my credit. Today they gave us an email address for the owner that bounced. I hate dinky Lloyd Athletic Club forever.

Shout out to Bill ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️who signed me up recently and I’m happy I joined! I was hesitant at first bc I have another gym membership and he asked me what I was waiting for so I thought what the heck and signed up. I’m loving the club, they have a variety of classes and I love the pro community vibe. There’s lots of equipment for all needs.
No elevator for ppl who can’t climb stairs which is a detriment.
Most classes are upstairs. Making it a challenge for a person with mobility issues.
Parking⭐️⭐️: challenging. There’s a parking lot but many times when I arrive it’s full. There is metered parking nearby.
I give the club 5 stars bc of the wonderful classes and most of the front desk ppl are really nice. Also for the community vibe.
Shout out to Lucy ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Meghan ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Cagney ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️and Jennifer ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️who I regularly take classes from - love these ladies. I train with Charlie who is amazing ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ and I’m learning new exercises from. My mom adores Justin ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️who’s been getting instructor for decades! Top notch and personable instructors.

I’ve been a member of Lloyd Athletic Club for a few months now, and it’s a solid gym overall. The equipment is top notch, and I appreciate the variety of classes they offer.
However, there are a few areas that could use improvement. The gym can get crowded during peak hours, making it difficult to access certain machines. Additionally, while the amenities like the sauna and hot tub are great, they can sometimes be overcrowded as well. good place to work out, but if you’re looking for a quieter environment, it might be worth considering the timing of your visits.

Friendly staff, clean facilities, good vibes. That said, it needs better air circulation, class teacher retention, and more evening classes for 9-5 workers.

Having classes included in the rate and Sauna/steam room/hot tubs in locker rooms rocks.

My partner and I have been members at this gym for years and for good reason! I love the Lloyd Athletic Club for its inclusive environment, variety of equipment and friendly staff. I'm a runner primarily, and the Women's Lift Strong class led by Meagan is one of my favorite ever group classes to get back into strength training. You can even enjoy soaking in a hot tub, relaxing in the sauna and/or sipping a beer after your workout.

Update: I would have to agree with another reviewer that the new gym layout is less than ideal having effectively eliminated the area for stretching on the second floor.

Lloyd Athletic Club is my second favorite gym in Portland. The staff are welcoming, towel service is included, and the facilities have seen recent upgrades such as new carpet and rubber flooring in the main weight area.

Cleanliness is a standout. Members are provided with sanitizer bottles and reusable cloths. The equipment selection is extensive, with minimal wait times. Cardio options are are good with treadmills, ellipticals, Jacob’s Ladder, and stair steppers (note: the basketball hoop is currently out of order).

That said, there are a few areas where LAC could elevate the member experience. The biggest drawback is the lighting—there’s little natural light, and current choices make some spaces feel less energetic. More uniform lighting (ensuring tones are the same for each bulb), brighter tones in the cardio area (including painting ceiling white), adding a wellness-focused system like SkyView circadian tiles or skylight installations could transform the atmosphere. Red led rope baseboard accent lighting would also add a modern touch.

In the spa, adding background music (e.g. via a licensed service such as sound machine) would create a more relaxing experience. Weightless by Marconi Union has been studied and shown to be one of the most relaxing songs. Small touches like red light therapy in the sauna, forest/nature wallpaper in the spa/ stretching area, greenery/fake plants throughout, or inspiring artwork would also add a sense of calm and energy throughout the gym.

Other functional upgrades could include:
• Step-and-pull handles on locker room doors and solutions for entry-locker congestion.
• Hex dumbbells (up to 30 lbs) near the stretching area for functional training.
• Step risers, mini bands, and additional mat hooks for drying in stretching area
• A Woodway or 15+ mph treadmill in the Max Room near the turf for cross-training
• Dance classes later in the evening.
• Adding air purifiers

For a fun twist, it’d be cool if LAC experimented with themed hours weekly. High-energy louder EDM/house/hip-hop throughout with LED lighting to create a club-like workout vibe, similar to Gymbox in London. They could even trial making mocktails/ NA options/ vegan protein shakes and hosting events to attract new members.

Overall, LAC is one of Portland’s best gym options. The consistent upgrades show ownership is invested in modernizing the space, and with a few thoughtful improvements, it could become an example for gyms around the country.

I was referred by a friend. I like this place so far! It's not flashy or Instagram-perfect, but it's got heart, soul, and everything I need to actually show up consistently. If you're tired of judgmental vibes or upselling nightmares, this locally owned spot might be your next workout sanctuary. The crowd is refreshingly diverse with lots of LGBTQ2SIA+, ALAANA (African, Latinx, Asian, Arab, Native American), and elderly folks. The gym is low-key and down-to-earth; no one's flexing. I feel comfortable being myself. Rooms are busy but packed with a huge selection of gear, from updated cardio machines (treadmills, bikes, rowers) and free weights to cable machines, racquetball, etc. The lighting is the biggest buzzkill—harsh fluorescents with inconsistent tones and zero natural light make some areas feel dungeon-y. The cardio zone, in particular, could pop with warmer bulbs (maybe even white-painted ceilings), a circadian lighting system, or faux skylights. While much of the equipment feels updated, some pieces show their age in spots. Nothing's broken, but a full refresh could elevate the upstairs. TVs are on and plentiful, which isn't good for me. I'd happily trade TVs for visually quiet blank wall. Fewer signs would make for a cleaner appearance. Parking's a mixed bag despite the free lot: if it's full, street spots in the Lloyd District are scarce during rush times, and the nearby Lloyd Center spots are risky. I've heard too many car break-in stories to chance it.

I wish I could give a better review.

As a new resident Ive been looking at all the gyms in my area. Lloyd Athetic Club claims to offer a one day pass however once I signed up for it I started receiving text messages from a MARLENA telling me I needed to take advantage of the sign up deal they had avaible when I came in for the one day pass. I told her I was browsing gyms and once I made a decision then I would join a gym. She responded saying how amazing the gym was and that I couldnt wait to look around if I came in for the day pass. She didnt seem concerned when I said if the day pass is contingent on me signing up then I will not get the day pass. Her responce.. "No problem."

Whats the point of a day pass if its contingent on signing up? That shows me its not about the comfortability of a potential member its about getting money. Portlands #1 gym and thats the customer service standard? Hard to believe.

Not a fan of the new machinery set up. It’s much too crowded and hard to navigate. I feel like I’ve seen less people utilizing the sanitation stations and not wiping down their equipment. I think this is because the sanitation tools did not move although the rest of the equipment did. These stations need to be more visible I think. Lastly, there’s this pile of mats in the hallway of the top floor just strewn over the ledge. That feels indicative of the new equipment set up. I like this gym and appreciate my personal trainer, Tara. I just kinda wish the equipment did not move.

I had a good gym experience while I was a member here, but the way they do business is not personable.

They aren’t afraid to be extortive when the pen hits the paper. Read contract thoroughly and never take anyone’s word in person or on the phone about canceling or pausing membership. Expect slimy corporate responses.

Might as well sign up at LA Fitness, at least they are up front about their practices and talk you through the contract in detail at time of signing. Better rates too.

New rule since January, 2025 that you only can come in once a day with 3 hours max!. Not that I use more than once a day or more than 3 hours, but to have those limits is annoying and arrogance from their part. I can join the LA Fitness down the street with a lot cheaper and no one spy on you whether you have passed 3 hours usage or not. The staffs are getting aggressive, bad vibe and rude. The owner and staffs walking around with an attitude, and not so frienfly vibe, as though they are doing you a big favor to let you use the gym.lol nah. We as customers pay to use the gym, the staffs are paid to do their jobs, i try to stay away from them while doing their jobs. But other than that , i don't really care what you do and expect the same from you, if you feel any other than that , that's your problem. So please don't have an attitude. And btw, the banner at the front street ' voted the best gym in portland 6 yrs in a roll' is dishonest and staged. I've been other gyms that I never have seen any contests whatsoever about which gym is the best! The gym got 'the best gym award' , i dont know ftom whom, because no other contestants entered from an unknown , probably fake contest. The gym put out a spreadsheet by the front desk asking people to sign. May be 10 or 20 signed. And now it's 'the best gym in Portland ' ! It's ashamed, dishonest , and a scam actually to have that faulty ad banner outside like that. With all of these, I'm gonna cancel my membership.

This place is amazing. Such attention to detail! So kind and supportive of everybody. Good friends are made here, as well as much-improved bodies. And the new remodel is beautiful: Everything is so fresh and clean! And SO many machines: I can’t imagine you’d wait more than one minute for your turn. Also a pole dancing studio, training that is just stretching, if you don’t want the gym stuff, chiropractors on the premises, and many free classes, The ownership is not some big national chain, but a local Portland Training Company gone entrepreneurs. So buy local! After 12 years experience with it, I still think it’s great.

Went for a one-day pass looking for a gym near my new job near Moda Center. 1) they are using AI chat bots to contact you and the website says "a real person". 2) Show up to hear "oh sorry, Tigard doesn't count as Portland for the free trial pass". Had to pay $20 cause I already made the drive not knowing. I've NEVER heard of a gym not giving a trial day or even week. This soured me immediately. I spent the day working out and the equipment was fine, but not amazing enough for me to risk getting into a contract with a company lying out of the gate.

This place has gone downhill. A lot of folks have stopped going due to overcrowding, old, sketchy equipment, bad vibes from owners, and the weird policing of the men’s locker room. There’s always a stressed out dude peering into the sauna and steam room who works at LAC. They put bright lights in the sauna and steam room a few months ago which used to be a relaxing place. My buddy was banned from LAC for allegedly draping a towel over a light in the sauna. They took away the benches in the shower area where people could relax in between sauna and steam. It’s just bad vibes now. LA fitness is better down the street. Would not recommend this place.

The receptionists at Lloyd Athletic Club discovered that, through a clerical error of their coworkers, LAC had not been charging my insurance properly for my membership. Instead of admitting to their mistake and fixing the error, they implied that I had been stealing from LAC and demanded that I pay them the difference for their incompetence. When I refused this blatant attempt at extortion, they insisted on cancelling my membership immediately. I would urge everyone to avoid the inept, predatory staff at Lloyd Athletic Club and travel the two blocks to LA Fitness instead.

I really love this gym. I've been a member for a while, and one of the things I appreciate most is that it’s locally owned and clearly run with care. The staff are always so nice and helpful—it really makes a difference. Whether I have a question about equipment or just need a friendly face at the front desk, they’re consistently welcoming and kind.

The variety of classes and equipment is great, and I like that there are different areas to work out in depending on what I’m doing that day. It never feels too crowded, even during peak times, which makes it easier to focus and feel comfortable.

I also really appreciate the mix of people who go here. It’s a diverse crowd, and that makes the space feel more relaxed and down-to-earth—not like one of those gyms where everyone’s trying to show off or film Instagram videos. I feel more comfortable being myself, and that helps me stay motivated.

All in all, it’s a clean, well-run, welcoming gym that supports a real sense of community. So glad to be part of it.

At the risk of my AWESOME fitness club getting overrun as a result of positive reviews, I can no longer gatekeep such a hidden treasure. I've been a member of every little hole-in-the-wall local or big box club, always looking for a solid place to lift weights and occasionally taking small group classes or using cardio machines (I'm looking at you, Portland winters...). Finally fed up with never being able to get to the machines or weights that I wanted when I needed to work out, I decided to try the Lloyd Athletic Club on my way home from work one day. Wow! I consider myself a pretty smart person, so let me save you the wasted time that I spent - THIS is where you want to workout. Why? Everyone here is friendly. Everyone to everybody. I am hyper aware of this because as a woman working out in a gym, it isn't always that way. The vibe here is chill and safe. There are TONS of different workout spaces. If there is only one place to squat and that is taken and you hoped to do squats that day, you're out of luck. Here, there are two rooms downstairs that have what I refer to as functional lifting equipment - ropes, suspension trainers, squat racks, benches, deadlift platforms, sleds, hanging bags, cable machines, etc. Additionally, there is a cardio room upstairs that has multiples of every cardio machine (and lots of TV's), a studio that has balance balls, bars, free weights, mats, sliders, bands - you get it. I've never come up here and NOT found what I was looking for. There is a large room that has machines and free weights - benches, cables, squat racks, etc, with ANOTHER large room adjacent that has MORE machines, foam rollers, mats, etc. I know that no matter what I'm planning to do that day in my workout, I will be able to find a space to do whatever I want. Period. That's gold as far as I'm concerned. If you play racket sports - you're covered. Pickleball, Wallyball (?), Racketball - all of it is here, plus indoor basketball courts. Don't play? That seems to be fine too, as I've seen several message board postings looking for people who want to learn and someone is willing to teach you! For free! What?! Did I mention that the people are nice here? The locker room is clean and spacious and there is a LADIES ONLY SAUNA AND STEAM ROOM. That is worth repeating. It was one of the factors that brought me here because I hated sitting in a mixed gender sauna and feeling like I was on display. Enough said. (Oh, and because it fits well here - the management trusts that everyone here can act like the adults that they are and decide which restroom and locker room works best for them. It's all good. No one makes a big deal out of anything and everyone seems to be very respectful. While I am not a person who might typically think about needing to use a different restroom or locker room, I want everyone to feel safe doing so and this is that place as far as I've been able to tell.) There are free towels and LOTS of cleaning equipment, which I ACTUALLY see people using. Regularly. (Yeah, I don't want ringworm either...) Lastly, the rates here are as good or better than most places I've been and are DEFINITELY better than some places that have far bigger advertising budgets but fall WAY short in delivering a good product. Join here. Workout and be happy. You won't regret it. Write a nice review afterward. If you see me working out, say "Hi!".

Ive been a gym rat for 50 years. Suffice it to say I KNOW gyms. Text space for reviews is limited but here we go, I'll try to keep it short.
Lloyd Athletic club is THE BEST because:
The equipment is top of the line
There is a lot of space, never crowded
Racket ball courts!
Many specialty workout rooms
Enough dumbbell weight for serious lifters (trust me, I lift!)
Family feeling at this gym. No corporate vibe.
THE EMPLOYEES ARE TOP NOTCH. All workers from front desk to trainers are long timers. They are well taken care of here and it shows. You do NOT see this in other gyms.
Friendly and fit,The trainers know their stuff
FREE TOWEL SERVICE!!!
Hot tubs
They have a bar to socialize in. Tap beer after your workout! Where else you gonna get that???
Oh yeah, and the membership prices beat all the competition.
SO WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR???

-A happy customer

I’ve been a LAC member for 4 years and I love it here. There’s a palpable sense of community and I have always felt welcomed. They’re also always putting money back into the gym to improve things, upgrade equipment, and better serve their members (I was thrilled to come back from college to find a set of brand new bumper plates at the deadlift platform). They don’t have quite as much space as a huge commercial gym might, but they have enough variety of equipment to do almost anything you might be interested in, it really doesn’t feel overly geared towards one style of fitness. If you want a local gym, you really can’t find much better than this!

I’ve always been happy with Lloyd Athletic. These days, my primary activity is “Stretch Yoga” or, as I call it, Senior Yoga. It’s a chair yoga class. During a break in my membership, I searched the Portland area for another and, as far as I can tell, Lloyd Athletic offers the only resource in town for chair yoga. I found only one other class, and that teacher clearly had no idea how to incorporate a chair into the practice. Not so here. Ten or twelve seniors, every class, and we get a good workout. Justin knows his yoga well, and he always has the right routine for us. The moves change gradually over time, so it always remains entertaining and fun. Like I say, it’s the one thing that keeps me coming back to the gym.

Great, clean gym with essential equipment, nice employees, and unique amenities. The sauna, hot tub, showers, and steam room combo in the locker room is a great way to unwind after a workout.

That said, much of the equipment is old and dated. The weight floor can also get crowded during busy times. There is also only one squat rack. I think it’d be an even better gym if they added another rack, and maybe reorganized the weight lifting areas. The back space is much more open, whereas the free weight section feels very crowded.

This is the best athletic club in Portland — from the amenities, to the staff, to the overall vibe and feel of the place. I love working out here and meeting new people who share the same interests in health as I do. The weights and equipment are top notch and everything stays clean and taken care of.

If I could provide a 0 star review I would. First off, the gym is outdated, unclean, and crampt! The trainers have horrible gym etiquette and will take all the weights and lay them across the floor right in front of the dumbbell racks, so you have no space to rerack your 70 lbs dumbbells. And when you go to cancel they hand you a business card with instructions to cancel. No follow up questions will be answered. You have to email to cancel through an 3rd party and it is the most frustrating process, and your reasoning may be denied and you will still have to pay out the contract. Horrible experience with this gym. Over priced for absolutely no services offered.

I've been a member for 23 years. This is a terrific gym. The owner is on site so any thing that goes wrong is fixed right away. They keep adding equipment and classes. It must also be a good place to work because the front desk people have been there so long I can't remember when they weren't.

I love training at Lloyd. They’re not like the big corporate gyms. I mean how many gyms do you know that has a dog waiting to greet you when you check in. I needed to cancel and had some extenuating circumstances but had signed up for a contract that saved me money rather than going month to month. They worked with me & my financial situation to freeze my membership and then ultimately cancel without any fees or anything. It was all done via email and they were really cool about it. I did have to send in an email but they really came through for me. I'll definitely be back LAC!

Really surprised by all the good reviews. I checked out this gym with a free day pass and was disappointed. TLDR: cramped, outdated, dirty, bad culture, expensive, non-transparent pricing.

This gym is extremely cramped (both crowded with people and jam-packed with equipment) and I had a hard time finding space to do many of my exercises. There are a lot of machines but not much space for free weights or squat racks. Most of the squat racks are in a room that was off-limits because it was being used for small group training, leaving just one rack available that was constantly in use by others.

I also did not like the general culture of the gym. In the 1.5 hours i was there, i experienced a lot of unwanted/creepy staring by other gym-goers (plural), which made me feel uncomfortable and was probably the worst part of the whole experience. And a lot of loud, obnoxious grunting (also from multiple people).

A lot of the comments describe the gym as “retro” or “old school” but it is straight-up outdated. I felt like i was back in my middle school from 2005… if they just left it as-is and hadn’t done any updates in 20 years. It felt dirty overall, especially the locker room. Normally i sauna and shower at the gym but definitely not something i was comfortable doing here. I also saw someone sit their bare a** on one of the locker room benches.

Lastly, the prices. Online it says you can get a membership for $29/month if you pay for 12 months in advance. When i got there, they said it’s actually $59/month if you pay 12 months in advance. I was confused and showed them the prices listed on their website and they said the prices on their website are outdated. It’s probably time to update the website now that the prices have doubled!

The only part i liked was the group fitness room. It was the only part of the gym that felt clean, fresh, and spacious. The staff were also kind to me, so i’ll give them that! Though i recommend reading some of the owner’s responses to bad reviews because they are very telling (a lot of defensiveness, passive-aggressiveness, childish mockery, and straight up denying their experiences… then asking them to change their review).

Anyway, the next day i tried a guest pass at LA fitness. It was a way, way better experience in every sense (clean, updated, spacious, more free weights and equipment, more amenities, better/more respectful culture - no creepy staring or loud grunting). Plus LA fitness is $29/month (for month to month!) and transparent about their pricing. The only downside is they play bad music lol. Normally I’d rather support a local gym but I cannot fathom paying $59/month for a dirty, outdated, cramped gym with a gross/creepy culture and i’m surprised so many people do.

I’ve been going to LAC for almost two years. It’s a clean, well run and welcoming gym that I look forward to visiting. The front desk staff is friendly and efficient. The trainers come in all sizes and shapes and are also quite welcoming. In particular, I have been working out with Khino for over a year. We have gone from working out to improve my general fitness level to working quite intensely toward a specific goal. During my time working out with Khino I have lost weight as well as improved my A1C and cholesterol levels. Khino’s no nonsense advice, his willingness to engage with and guide nutrition ( he sent me lovely recipes for sweet but not bad for you treats) and his depth of knowledge make him a standout trainer that anyone would be lucky to work with.

I’m an experienced gym goer. I’ve been a long term member at the place down the street but several friends switched to this place and said they really liked it. Things I like: never too crowded and all the equipment I want. Several large squat racks downstairs. Generally chill vibe. Beer taps in the front room (very Portland). People who work here aren’t trying to sell you anything. Locker rooms have steam/sauna/hot tub so no need to bring a bathing suit. Things I don’t like: free towels (i like) but too small. We love this gym and have been going for a year and a half now. I’m sure it’s just the beginning of the year health craze- but it does seem like lately no matter what time you go it’s slammeddd. The parking can be sometimes minorly irritating but mostly it’s frustrating never being able to go into the sauna because it’s always packed & also waiting for equipment is a problem. I’m happy so many people have found LAC, but man! It’s getting tough trying to figure out a time of day that less people will be there. So far I haven’t found it lol. I love that there’s been so many specials for new people joining but it feels like lately it’s past capacity.
Overall though- it’s a great gym with an old school feel & the staff is very kind and welcoming.

Not for me.

Been going here for ~ a year now and while i do appreciate the variety of equipment in the space they have, this isnt the gym for you if you find yourself working a swing shift. This place closes early, so you'll find yourself needing to do early morning workouts, in my case this caused a consistency issue.

That and between some awkward billing here and there and some less than great interactions -- id consider my opinion if this place very middling. i can recognize im not getting the most out of this gym; im mostly needing a place to lift weights and as a trans person im just personally not going to use spaces like public showers for sake of everyone's (mostly my own) comfort. That said the saunas here and the basketball/handball courts are definitely part of what youre paying for, and i think I'm just needing something more weightlifting-focused with more flexible hours.

this could be the gym for you and is worth checking out if youre in the neighborhood! its just not the one for me. i wish it well.

I’ve only been going to LAC for a week but have tried everything from ClassPass, 24 Hour, Peak on Alberta and was a member at Cascada (briefly). Nothing ever felt quite right. The LAC is nothing fancy but it has so much to offer and a great community feel. It feels very nostalgic and reminds of my childhood YMCA. If you’re looking for a comfortable place to exercise with a lot of activities and options I’d give it a try. On month 3 of a membership at Lloyd Athletic Club and I gotta say it's really fantastic. I almost don't want to report on how great it is because I don't want it to get overpopulated, but feel I owe it a glowing review because it's been so good to/for me.

LAC has become my sanctuary. The staff are super-nice and always accommodating. The vibe of the clientele is chill, respectful and generally positive. I've never encountered a gym culture that is so up on hygiene, like everyone respects the code and wipes things down after use, I mean like everyone! There isn't that one douchebag who's too important to wipe down or re-rack equipment or that chick who's too involved in her cell phone cinematic IG fitness journey to have any regard for others. People respect the space of others and generally what we're all there to do.

Overall, I feel like this is a place for people who are a notch up from beginner, not that there aren't newbies (and there's absolutely nothing wrong with being a newbie!), but it feels like most here are into their shit, like almost mid-level and up. But again, if a person is new, there would be nothing wrong with starting here (I haven't used a personal trainer, but from what I've seen, they seem really supportive, so for the newbies that could well be a thing). There's no elitist or snobby vibe, which is amazing and so welcome.

Lastly (and again, kinda hesitant to say this 'cause I don't want the place to change or somehow get overcrowded) I have to say I got a killer deal. KILLER. What I recommend is come in for a tour and free day pass and be ready to sign up for a package that same day. They have special incentives for those who sign up same day, and those incentives are pretty amazing.

Pros: all the above
Cons: none yet (and none on the horizon)

Nice gym, but beware before you sign up. Cancelling your membership is a colossal hassle. You have to write a letter requesting the cancellation. *EDIT* Hahaha now we're being gaslit into thinking "cancellations are super easy." I emailed that customercare@abc address, their response was... it will take 5 to 7 business days to process my request?

There is a button to renew your membership or make payments in the app. Why claim to "protect members personal data and financial info" if I can renew/pay but not cancel? This nonsense is what "Click - to - Cancel" aims to address. This extremely nice and affordable gym with a friendly staff and great facility (I'm being serious, it is really an excellent gym) is exactly the same as every other gym out there.

I’ve been a member at Lloyd Athletic Club in Portland, Oregon, for about a year now, purchasing a monthly pass each time, and I can confidently say it’s one of the best fitness facilities around. The gym is always clean and well-maintained, creating a welcoming environment that makes working out here enjoyable. They have a wide range of machines for all types of workouts—whether you’re into cardio, strength training, free weights, or machines, there’s something for everyone.

One of the highlights of my experience is the outstanding customer service provided by Bill, one of the employees. Bill is always ready to help, whether it’s sorting out billing questions or helping me track down something I may have left behind in the gym. He’s genuinely friendly and goes out of his way to make sure members have a positive experience.

And I have to mention his playlist! Whenever Bill is in charge of the music, he curates a great mix of R&B and hip hop, which adds a nice vibe in the locker room. The volume is perfect—not too loud or blaring—but just right. It’s even fun to sing along to while taking your time in the locker room.

Overall, Lloyd Athletic Club has been a good place for my fitness journey, and the excellent atmosphere and support from staff like Bill keep me coming back each month. Highly recommended!

I have been working out with Joe Koonrajaksebonde for the last 8 months and he has made a huge impact in my strength training knowledge and routine. Being over 50 and quite out of shape, Joe was extremely knowledgeable in giving me all the right cues to learn proper form, and taught me so much about my body I never even knew. I do some weight training and have been happy with the variety of machines and dumbbells. The staff is friendly and they do their best to maintain the place: replacing court lights, painting, cleaning. Before you join this gym, I'd encourage you to look at the way this gym handles patrons with complaints and customer service in general.

My experience at this gym vs. how I was billed are vastly different. The gym was very nice and even quaint and retro, and the machines were nice, however I was only in town for one month and I made that apparent in my first visit.

I thought everything was taken care of, that I'd be charged the first month and that would be all.

I come to find out after a month that I am in fact being charged for an extra month. When I called their front desk and left multiple voice mail messages called tens of times, no person ever returned my calls to address this.

I am attaching s screen shot of an email where an employee offers to drop the late fees if I don't leave a bad google review.

I would like to thank Marlena for emailing me back (albeit 4 months after my first attempt.) As I was finally able to figure out what was really going on.

I was sent to collections despite my efforts to contact the front desk and 5 months or so later I finally receive an email from them out of the blue.

I just got off the phone with business owner Nick, who is the root of the problem here, who used my personal account information to call me at home and tell me why he believes I was wrong (!!!) and that I upset his employee and how could I write a bad google review and he again offered to remove the charges if I deleted my review, to which I said yes, but reminded him that I could always write another one after the charges are removed because I'm nothing if not too honest.

Really, folks, you need to be aware that this gym is not different than a larger chain in the 3rd party predatory finance machine they use for billing and they will play the victim in any complaint scenario.

Nick, my final piece of advice for you? Find a good therapist!

If you're in the market for a personal trainer, I would definitely recommend trying a session with Alex.

I usually don’t leave bad reviews but my girlfriend and I were treated badly by the front desk people multiple times. Also the mats are very old and stinky. They are a sponge a material, 🦠so bring your own mat. Just seems like, for the price they are charging people, they could do a little better. Also it’s very hard to cancel your member ship even after the year. I had to threaten to get a lawyer to cancel. They do everything to keep people paying. I know lots of people love it. Except for during the pandemic shutdown, I have been going to the Lloyd Athletic Center for 6 or 7 years now. I had always worked out on my own, played basketball, hiked, used the gym at work, etc., but never took any classes, until I retired. Justin's classes turned out to be a dependable way to keep the body moving with plenty of camaraderie among the attendees. Thank you, Justin!

If you are looking for a challenge, Megan's classes are the ones for you. I initially was taking her Barre class, but it was just a bit too much for me and I had to drop it. I felt bad about doing so because she is such a great teacher. When I told her I had "flunked out," she encouraged me to try her other class, in spite of me being a guy: Women's Lift Strong, and I cannot recommend it, and Megan, enough. I had misgivings because I prefer mornings and it is at 6 PM. But, after trying it once, I have been a regular for a few months now and do not like to miss it. Megan is so positive and encouraging; always demonstrates the exact form she is looking for, as well as showing us what she does not want to see us doing (which is, of course, what I would probably be doing without her specific instructions). You will definitely feel this class the next day, but you will also feel your strength and energy growing. Thank You, Ms. Megan!

And thank you to Billy and the rest of the front desk staff, as well!

I love this gym! I got to train with Megan one-on-one and also did her small group training which were both amazing and made me feel so much more confident in the gym. She is such a great trainer, plus her women’s weight lifting classes on Tuesday and Thursdays are always a great time and a great workout. Highly recommend :)

I just started at Lloyd Fitness and I'm enjoying it so far, the people are nice, and I love the many options there are to stay fit in this club. I'm especially enjoying Megan's Barre and Women's Lift Strong classes, they are exactly what I've been looking for in group strength training.

I've enjoyed my time here at Lloyd Athletic Club. They have all the things, including easy to use weight machines, a heavy bag, sauna, whirlpool and steam room in the women's locker room, towel service, and room for stretching and just using weights. I'm also a big fan of Megan's Lift strength-building class - it's a killer workout!

Man I have so much love for the Lloyd Athletic Club, its owners, employees, and members. From the quality facilities to the quiet and kept down to earth feeling it has, it’s tough to imagine a better athletic club right in the heart of NE Portland. The only thing I(and other members) would love to see change is for the club is to expand their late night hours and to keep the club open a bit later which I think would help ease gym traffic and would please many nighttime gym goers. Thank you for all yall do

This is my regular gym. It's awesome, very communal feeling. There's racketball groups amd competitions, a small bar, lots of treadmills, elipticals and tvs sets, lots of weights in the large room and smaller rooms with weights as well. The trainers here are great and there are several free classes throughout the week.

This is the best gym I have ever been to. It has everything you need and nothing you don’t. Most importantly, the people, both workers and customers, are unpretentious, friendly, and communal. I’ve never felt like people wanted to take care of a gym more than I see every visit here. Why go to a big corporate chain when the local gym is better and cheaper?

UPDATED: Temporarily revoking 1 star until gym extends its weekend hours beyond 8pm (see below)**

I've been a member of the LAC for 8 years and while it has seen some changes over those years, it has always had what no other gym has: *soul*.

I've referred countless friends and colleagues to this place, five of whom are members to this day. To me and to many of its members, LAC is an institution with a welcoming and unpretentious community (something ruthless corporate 'gyms' have sought to destroy), one which has been a place of refuge and wellness where I was sure to be greeted by familiar faces.

A former trainer, Regina, encouraged me to pursue hip-hop dance–an activity I now practice formally some 8 years later. As a matter of fact, all of the staff members whom I've gotten to know over time have all been incredibly kind and compassionate, even when I'm lagging a few minutes behind close-time. Shout out to front desk fam Livia, Kiki, and Iris, and also big up the homies JR and Josué holding it down.

The LAC has been pivotal not only for my physical health, but also my mental and emotional well-being. Other, corporate gyms with a copy & paste model invade neighborhoods, erect ugly, brutalist concrete structures, flatten once-residential lots to make way for empty parking structures, and systematically erode the character of the community it occupies. Baiting customers with useless gimmicks, following whatever fitness trends a far-off market research group has identified might sell to a gentrifying bourgeois class programmed to buy into the shiny new (sterile, corporate) gym facility and (ultimately) move their stock price. These so-called gyms–unsightly warehouses where strange men go to oggle–do not exist to serve its patrons, but merely to strangle every cent from the community it will eventually abandon to line the pockets of shareholders (e.g. 24hr).

On the other hand, the Lloyd Athletic Club combines the charm and sense of community as that of a YMCA or neighborhood activity center while also having professional (and safe) environment, a host of well-maintained facilities for various athletic activities, not to mention a sauna and steam room and complimentary towels (a huge deal).

**I do wish it were open later, especially on weekends. Many other members have said the same. Prior to covid, LAC was open until 10PM every day–a nice, even time. Since, it is only open until 9:30pm and 8pm on Sat, Sun. I do hope they will resume normal hours soon.

First, a shout out to Derek, my personal trainer. He's always got a backup plan and flows with finding workarounds for me.

Very chill vibe. LAC is more like a club, less like a big gym, but in a good way. Plus, there's a Donkey Kong machine.

I was new to gyms but wanted to get a routine down that helped me get back in shape, work on some specific issues I was having and learn my way around the equipment. I signed up for three months of personal training sessions with Clay after an introductory session and they were a life changer. Clay is knowledgeable, listened to what I needed, pushed me to take the extra step and together we built a plan I can take with me to confidently set my own agenda at the gym and keep myself in shape. The Saturday morning classes were great too. I always felt I got the help and guidance to use the equipment properly and adjust to get the most from my workout and avoid injury. Great atmosphere, welcoming vibe, clean space and no hidden fees. I recommend this gym and the trainers.

I was happy at Lloyd Athletic club until the owner took me aside to tell me my perfume stunk and if I wanted to continue to wear it, he would terminate my membership. I started to protest, whereupon he told me I was no longer a member at the club and my membership was terminated, all for wearing perfume. He was very nasty about it, overbearing and mean, he gave me no option and told me to get out. He is a jerk and a bully and he obviously has problems with women. People like this should not be in an ownership position, this guy didn't know how to deal with people respectfully and any modicum of respect. This is the worst experience I ever had with a club. Join at your own peril, caveat emptor!

The LAC is a very welcoming gym that has a neighborhood community-center feel. Everyone is friendly and I feel very comfortable there. I also enjoy hanging out and having a beer afterwards in the lounge. And they offer punch cards!

I come to Lloyd exclusively for personal training and have had the best experience here of any other gym I have been to. My trainer Chase is TOPS- and has reintroduced my middle age post pandemic telework body back to the strong and energized me I remembered! No injuries. No judgement. Just constant encouragement and movement forward. Bill at the front desk is always a warm welcome with all the answers needed. It would be amazing if there were classes working parents could attend earlier in the day, say 8:30 or 9:00). But as it is I only attend training. Still very pleased.

Joined a few months ago. The staff is the best part of the experience. Friendly, easy to work with, and helpful. Having a parking lot is fantastic. For an older gym they have modern equipment and it's clean. Equipment does breakdown from time to time (heavy bag, basketball hoop) but it looks like they are working on getting it fixed. They provide towels but I'd bring my own to shower with. I'm sure if members would all chip in $X one time to replace them, everyone 100% would.

The hot tub, sauna and steam room are dated but it does the trick to help with recovery and so far they have been working every time I've been in. I was a member at a "high end" gym before and while LAC isn't, they are not trying to be. For the price, it's a great local gym you can go to and get a solid workout in with a down to earth vibe you can rely on. Happy to be here.

Started coming here about a month ago. I have to say, the service here has been impeccable. Many larger gyms in the past have often left me with the feeling of just wanting to complete my workout and get out, but not Lloyd Athletic Club. This is a fun second home for me and my wife, and it is pleasant to hang out here after a workout. The staff have always been super helpful, and I want to give a huge shout out to Iris, Livia, JR, Emily, and Kiki.
