Such a great class! First time climbing for my child and myself Lily was so helpful and supportive and kind. She did a great job of varying the difficulty levels so that the more experienced climber in our group also felt challenged. We packed a lot into our hour together and will definitely be back for more.

I booked a guided climbing session at Portland Rock Gym, and Rileigh O was the belayer we worked with. He was super friendly and patient and kind. I felt at ease the entire time even though climbing to such heights was out of my comfort zone. Thanks Rileigh for introducing us to climbing in such an approachable way. We will definitely be back.

We've been using PRG for a couple years now and generally had a good experience. The setting can be infrequent, very aggressive for beginners and sometimes lack emergency down climbs in dangerous spots, but overall good. However they recently increased rates which were already above most gyms in the area, which I could understand, except right after increase rates they cut morning yoga. 7:15 is the only class I can make and being a morning person it was a consistent part of my weekly routine.
Increasing fees should add amenities. To suffer both a cost increase and a loss of the only amenity they had over other gyms has convinced me to switch to Skyhook next month.

Love the crew at the front desk! They’re friendly, upbeat, and make the gym feel like a community every time I walk in.
During the morning, Jess is always cheerful when I sign in and helpful with any questions about the facility.
Jerek is efficient and professional.
The whole crew keep things organized, handle sign-ins smoothly, and make sure members know about upcoming events or classes.”

The Portland Rock Gym is great and I love that there are two locations. I recently became a member and Erin at the NE location was great! Erin explained all the different membership options and helped me figure out which one would work best for my needs. She also took time to help me try on harnesses and find the right fit, making sure I would be happy with my purchase.

Portland Rock Gym's intro to lead class was great. It was very fun and easy to learn during the two day session. I felt safe and confident after the first climbing exercises. The attention to safety and correct technique was what I needed to feel good on a new type of climbing.

Big thanks to Erin. They were a pleasure to learn from and very fun to chat with. Can't wait to climbing there again soon.

So far PRG has been a fantastic gym! Lily and Rileigh helped me get set up with a membership, walked me through buying my first harness, and were overall so very cool and helpful. They did an awesome job making me feel comfortable and welcomed.

Also, the routes that are set at this location are a ton of fun. Seems to be a bit harder grade-wise than other gyms I’ve been to which is good! Some of the boulder problems really push you out of the typical comfort zone for bouldering. I’m very excited to start climbing through the top rope climbs!

My 14yo son and I took the Learn to Belay course with Greg yesterday (Oct 4, 2025) and we had a great experience. Greg was an excellent instructor. My son and I each have little climbing experience and Greg patiently and thoroughly taught is chronologically everything we needed to know to feel confident trusting each other on Belay. We learned how to put on our climbing harness, check it for wear, tie in as climbers and belayers, all of the techniques and communication protocols essential to belaying and then safely practiced them together. At the end of the lesson we had time to go into the gym and try a couple of routes with Greg overseeing us. Once the lesson was completed, my son and I stayed in the gym and continued to climb and belay on our own. We felt comfortable and safe with all the techniques Greg taught us. We were confidently checking each other each time we moved to a different route and tied in. The facility itself is very impressive - many top rope routes with wide range of difficulties. Everything was clean and in great condition with clear labeling and easy to follow routes. We're looking forward to gaining experience and learning more at PRG together. Thanks again Greg!

I’ve had such a great experience at Portland Rock Gym! I started with Beginner’s Night and then took the Intro to Climbing class with Riley. I came in as a total beginner and threw myself into the deep end, and PRG has made it super approachable each time. Step by step, I’ve been able to get a bit more comfortable with everythingβ€”auto belays, bouldering, and top-ropeβ€”and actually feel like I'm starting to know what I’m doing.

For Intro to Climbing, Riley was a fantastic instructor. Not only did he give me the skills and confidence to climb, but he also felt like a great climbing partner: encouraging, patient, and super friendly.

Really looking forward to coming back and continuing to build on what I’ve learned. The energy here is welcoming and positive, and I appreciate the community PRG creates for newcomers like me!

PRG was the first gym I climbed at when I moved to Portland, I enjoyed it and went often. After some time, the overall quality of the gym environment has decreased, it doesn't feel like a community forward environment. Other gyms in Portland make sure to have community engagement events and nothing ever happens at PRG. The main concerns also being that they've raised their membership prices but diminished the standards of cleanliness and route resetting, they also offer each member 2 guest passes a month, yet don't allow you to bring in the same person...I believe that for the membership price, a member should spend their guest passes on whomever they'd like, whenever they'd like. If you don't use your guest passes, they go to waste. A day pass costs $22...maybe they should give members the options of acquiring these passes in their membership or paying $42 less when they opt out. Or better yet, let people use THEIR guest passes how they want to.
Overall, PRG leaves a lot to be desired. It seems they've put in a lot of effort and money on opening their new facility, while completely ignoring existing issues at their original gym.

This gym has high end, state of the art facilities. Great climbing routes, good variety for workouts, and very clean. However, in the time that I've been climbing here, I have been very disappointed by the money grabbing persona of this gym. I wanted to freeze my membership for the summer and they wanted to continue to charge me $10/month to avoid paying for an initiation fee again. They also encouraged my spouse to buy two months for a summer special after paying $82 for a belay class where he didn't get a certification. In fact, he would have to go in three separate times in order to get his full belay certification which would outlive the $200 in fees that he paid. He wasn't told that the class came with a week of "free day passes". In my personal opinion, that is way too many hoops to jump through for a belay certification and it doesn't put a ton of confidence into their instructors who are teaching said belay classes. Overall, I'll be putting my money where my mouth is and canceling my membership entirely. We've already found a new gym with a much better atmosphere.

They are very difficult to work with regarding scheduling and email responses for my kid rec team. I wanted my kid to finish out the year on a different day for the rec team due to other schedule conflicts but they won't change even though there is room (when I spoke to another person). And of course there is no cancellation until the following months even though it was after the 1st class of the month. Everything must be thru email and takes days/week to response to a simple inquiry. It is very frustrating to work with them on the youth rec team and I wouldn't recommend it to any parents.

I had previously cancelled my membership a few years ago because one of the instructors was harassing me for months to take the lead test every time I came into the gym after I took the lead class. That was very uncomfortable and made me stop climbing there for a while. That instructor is still working there.

Between the previous harassment and how difficult it is to work with them on the youth rec team, I think I am done with them. I will go to movement and source for top ropes and bouldering at skyhook, circuit, and tomo instead. There are still other choices around town.

As a belated relational Christmas gift, my son and I signed up for an Intro to Climbing class and attended last Friday. We had a fantastic time - starting with basic training about gear, difficulty ratings, and safety practices. Beginning with very approachable walls, we graduated to higher and more complex climbing at our own pace. Both auto belay and assisted belay were offered as options. Sang and Lauren were kind, patient, and encouraging teachers. Their enthusiasm to try new things and to guide gently made the adventure super-accessible. It's something we'll absolutely want to do again. I suspect we'll end up taking the Intro to Belay class before too long as well.

This rock gym is big (bigger than it looks from the outside!) with a lot of variety in the walls and boulders. It is well-maintained, friendly, and accessible. Big shout out to Addison & Nate for leading a clear and welcoming class that made me feel ready to jump in to all of it safely - highly recommend taking it as a first step here!

Update after being a member for a while - took another class (the technique 101 class) with SΓ€ng and it probably saved me six months of progress and an injury by unlocking basics that I wasn't getting through practice alone. Highly recommend!

Update again: Also highly recommend getting in touch with them for custom classes and guiding, which I found to be a great process, very interactive, and very reasonably priced especially if you're working with a small group of friends. Went with guide Cam for a day of outdoor instruction and it helped us progress a lot in a short time!

They cheered us on and guided us through different climbing areas, starting with the tall wall and moving on to bouldering. Their enthusiasm and clear instruction helped build our confidence and made the experience both challenging and rewarding. I highly recommend their classes for anyone looking to get into rock climbing!

I took the "First Ascent" aka "Intro to Climbing" class with Max and was really happy with it and with his approach. We started with the very basics, which were a good refresher for someone like me who has climbed casually with a guide many years ago, but also ideal for someone who’s an absolute beginner. He was patient and thorough and it all felt very safe. We climbed on rope with him on belay, we learned how to use the auto-belay system and got tons of practice climbing on the rope was as well as in the bouldering area (where is lower to the ground and ropes aren’t used). I’ll return for sure, and might take the course specifically about belaying.

~~EDIT: Adding an additional review since I took another class.~~~
On December 21 I took the "Intro To Belay" class with instructor Tyler and feel that I left knowing most everything there is to know about belaying climbers. He was patient, thorough, helpful and encouraging. Would recommend! I’m excited to use these skills to expand the world of climbing. Plus I get a free week of membership to work through my new skills.

I have been a member of PRG for several years. 90% of the staff are amazing, super friendly and helpful. The routes are pretty fantastic. The community is wonderful and some have become my closest friends.

I have been quite disappointed the last many months. The owner decided to build another location (Beaverton) and that it just had to be the largest climbing gym in the country. I don’t know why, I suppose for recognition or bragging rights, but to me that sounds like the goal of a narcissist. The original location (Portland) has completely taken a backseat in the last year while the 2nd was being completed. There aren’t enough setters to work both places, (not their fault) hence Portland waiting months on end for old routes to get changed out. The cleanliness of Portland has really gone downhill; in many places it looks as though the carpet hasn’t been vacuumed for weeks and the locker rooms are constantly dirty. Some of the walls were resurfaced a while back while others have spots exposed down to the wood. I have gotten splinters due to this and witnessed the same happening to other climbers. In exchange for all these wonderful things at the Portland location, we now have the luxury of paying $20 more per month than we were paying earlier just this year! I had heard around the gym last year that membership rates were going to increase due to the owner needing the means to pay for the new location. I was discussing this with some of the staff and the owner’s son overheard and said, β€œWhere did you hear that? That is absolutely not true. That is not happening.” He straight up lied to my face.

They just had a Black Friday special if you purchased an annual membership. Even though they offered it in the past, mine did not qualify because I have the early bird membership (before 3pm). I was informed this is because it’s already discounted. Yep, because I only have access to the gym half the day. So on top of the huge increases over the last several months, I was not offered the Black Friday special.

The Portland location is very accessible to me since it’s about a 15 minute walk from my home. I have not been to Beaverton yet and plan to go rarely, if ever. I don’t have the time to fight 26 traffic yet I’m paying for a gym I will probably never use. They really should have more options for memberships; one for each location alone or both if you like. I’ve chosen to write this publicly because no email, suggestion card or discussion with staff (which is absolutely not their fault, they simply can’t do anything) is going to change anything. I doubt this will either, unfortunately. I’ve spoken with countless members about these things and many of us are unhappy, disheartened and feel incredibly disrespected. It’s time for PRG to start showing that they care about their patrons.

Update 12/13/2024: While I still enjoy climbing at this gym things have been on a downward spiral. Since the new gym in Beaverton opened, the NE gym has started falling into disrepair. The skylight has been leaking for over a year, the floor in the rope room has not been updated since I started climbing here (8+ years) and is in bad shape, and the texture on the walls is so worn off in places that the bare wood is splintering off.

Since the rates have gone up, it would be nice to see some investment in the original gym and not just the new gym. A lot of people don't and probably never will climb at the new gym since it is way out in Beaverton.

I think there should be a single gym price (NE or Beaverton) and a dual gym price (the price we all pay now is good for both gyms.)

The staff is always friendly and helpful. I have nothing but good things to say about them. It would just be nice to not have the NE gym be ignored as it is now.

I’ve been going to PRG for several years, and it’s where I’ve learned how to belay, top rope and lead climb. It’s a cozy gym with friendly people, both staff and fellow climbers. The route designs are top notch, but sometimes they get stale after being up for 3-4 months; That has only been an issue this past year while they build out the new gym in Beaverton. Now that it is done, they seem to be back to a couple month cadence with the routes.

As a long time member, I haven’t appreciated my membership going up 3 times in a year. I started at $82, then it was $92 and now $105. They finally eclipsed Movement ($100/mo), a much nicer gym in the Pearl district. They have taller routes, a full and proper workout gym, saunas, provide the belay devices, and keep up with maintenance better than PRG. I actually paused my PRG membership to try out Movement as a viable alternative; I’ve climbed there with punch passes to get some variety lacking at PRG ever since the route setters got spread thin by the new gym buildout. PRG does have the best route setters. But that’s the only win for PRG aside from the coziness. Movement is much bigger!

I went in for my Intro to Climbing class to learn to belay on 11/17/24. I have an auditory processing disorder, which is rare and can be really hard on an instructor. Ollie did a fantastic job getting me set up with a group class with Tyler Mann as the instructor. Tyler had a full class and not one, but two of us with very different hearing problems! He handled the entire class beautifully. Everyone got attention, every piece of every step was clearly explained, shown, written down, practiced and gone over again. Great gym. Miguel is the friendliest and chilliest dude ever and Dan taught a really great lead class. He did a real great job explaining the what and why behind the techniques and keeping it engaging.

Update: after a few years of being here I've lowered my rating a bit. It's a good gym, I am still a member, and I still enthusiastically bring guests and recommend the gym, but honest feedback includes that there's a bit of what I would describe as a "we're the only game in town" culture here when it comes to updates, customer service, and price, which as far as having a rope gym on the east side, they are.

The facility is spacious, with an impressive variety of climbing walls that cater to all skill levels, from beginners to experienced climbers. I took the intro to climbing class with my husband this morning, and have mixed feelings. The class itself was very informative and we learned a lot, however we both could not wait to leave due to one of the instructors. Ollie was lovely, kind, patient, and did a great job of creating a welcoming experience for us newbies, and so were all the other staff members we came into contact with. Unfortunately, we had Zach supporting our learning in the class, as our group was split into a group of two and a group of three. We would not recommend him for folks new to climbing. He was very egotistical and turned us off from wanting to come back to this location. Most notably was a public scolding in front of the group, that my husband and I are quite perplexed by, as well as directly contradicting Ollie at times. Hopefully others have better experiences, but for us it was a hugely disappointing letdown.

I've been a member of PRG for half a year now and have always had extremely positive experiences at the facilities. A large part is due to the many hardworking staff who are working the front desk, constantly setting new routes, making sure the space is safe and sanitized, etc. Some special shout-outs: the setting staff who are always creating new routes for the two facilities; Addison, our belay teacher who taught us how to safely navigate the ropes during our introductory course; Jess, at the Beaverton location's front-desk for always greeting us with a smile and her friendliness; and Teachers ZoΓ«, Amy, Leah, and Critter for always challenging and encouraging my growth through their respective strength and yoga lessons.

Re the routes: always have a healthy balance of routes that are easier, more challenging, and ones that are definitely more aspirational. I appreciate how they each require me to focus on honing a new/existing technique in their own way, and have pushed my physical limits and my creativity as I project them.

I just had the intro to Rock Climb class with Addison . They were AMAZING! I absolutely loved this class. They bring you into a separate room with much smaller , beginner walls and the class was a much more intimate setting , which was fantastic. It helped me focus more on the instructor and what they were saying . I've actually had a class like this before about a year ago at a different rock gym and they had us with all of the other climbers and that made it very intimidating! Addison was so kind and patient and helpful. When you had a question, they answered it without making a person feel silly. For the first climb/belay lesson where we actually began climbing on the wall, they had us go halfway up first and get lowered down so we got to practice in a much less dangerous setting . I have nothing but good things to say about this class and I am SO GLAD that I had this experience! Oh there is also an employee that I saw that I think may actually be Magnus Mitbo!!!! Go check it out!

The cast of this gym is filled with amazing people and some of the best customer service around.

I’m from out of town and I had my phone die on me and stop charging so I was dead in the water. I walked up to the front desk and a nice blonde lady helped me and showed me the correct way to get to a store to buy a charger!

While being a feet person and writing me directions to the nearest Fred Meyer she tactfully assisted customers that came in with speed and care. I highly recommend going to this place for the workers alone!

I took the intro class last night with Nate (and Addison). Nate did a fantastic job explaining everything in a really clear, confident way. There's a lot of information for a beginner like me, and he shared helpful tips for remembering all the steps. I appreciated his encouragement, positive attitude, and focus on safety. He had great pacing and teaching techniques, which helped me absorb the information and then have a chance to practice.

Took the intro to climbing class to learn about the basics of belaying, knot tying and other important info! Our instructor for the evening was Nate who did a great job explaining all the ins and outs and answering any questions. I’ll definitely be comin’ back!!

Visited for a climbing clinic and was absolutely blown away by this community. I’ve never felt so comfortable in a gym…(I literally felt it at my first step through the front door.)

Huge thanks to Mike, Dan, and this entire crew! Grateful for all the hard work and love that you all pour into this this space :)

Always a nice place to climb, both on ropes and bouldering. I recently took their lead clinic with Brandon and had a great experience overall. Would highly recommend for anyone looking to try lead and/or feeling rusty.

Took the Intro class last night with Addison and Nate. They were incredible. Knowledgeable, friendly, and very helpful! I had climbed at PRG in the past (6-7 years ago), but thought I should refresh my skills, especially with the requirement for assisted belay devices now. Addison did a great job explaining to the complete novices in the class, and also was great for someone like me who had previous experience.

Shoutout to Max, Addison and Nate for making me (a complete novice) feel welcome, comfortable and safe during my introduction to the gym. The space itself is beautiful and obviously well cared for. I am very much looking forward to spending more time here.

Took the intro to climbing class with my fiancΓ©e this past Sunday and Manoush (sp?) was an awesome instructor. Haven’t ever been in a climbing gym before and by the end of the class felt adequately prepared to safely climb inside. Also shout out to Portland Rock Gym staff for accommodating being able to extend our week pass to a monthly pass. Looking forward to continuing to learn and practice climbing with my fiancΓ©e at PRG!

I attended the introductory climbing class taught by Addison and it was perfect. Excellent focus on safety and communication during the class which resulted in a cautious but confident first climb. The gym set up and amenities are great and the staff is helpful and supportive every step of the way. Also, great coffee and bagels in the cafe upstairs.

The facility was the host for the Divisionals this past weekend, Feb 2024. It was in 'competition ready' mode - considering the massive size and number of competitors it was hosting. Yet, is far from finished. Once it is complete, it will be a world-class facility. My only criticism is the viewing in the center climbs were challenging and crowded. I prefer some elevated viewing that means you get a much better view, take take cleaner photos and videos. Other than that, the staff were well organized and the facility will take climbing to a new level and attract more people. Great job!

Over the course of my many years climbing here the front desk people have made such a positive impact. I love the front desk workers such as Manoj and Dan.
