I've been training at Recreate Fitness for more than a dozen years. Nathan runs an amazing fitness and jiu-jitsu program. Top notch instruction, awesome training partners and always a good time. His focus on longevity has allowed me to grow my game in jiu-jitsu and also stay in the best shape of my life throughout the years. Run, don't walk to this place!

The nobility of the Roman Senate, the vulgarity of a Flogging Molly concert--this gym straddles the Tao. Love thy neighbor. Get yoked.

The fitness and jiu jitsu classes both follow the same philosophy of have fun, be safe, and improve. Wherever you are in your fitness or martial arts journey, Nathan does a fantastic job of coming up with programs and ideas that work to challenge you. Expect a lot of functional compound exercises, done in a circuit that improve strength, cardio, mobility, balance, and coordination. It is never dull, Nathan's rants and jokes make the dues feel like the cover charge for a comedy show where you also happen to be clean-pressing a kettlebell.
I'm new to jiu jitsu but have trained in a few other martial arts for a little over a decade. Nathan teaches in a way that's unique and more engaging than most classes I've been to. The entire jiu jitsu class is focused on practical application. Instead of repeating drills and movements against imaginary opponents the students learn to turn up and down their resistance. That isn't to say that there isn't a fine attention to detail either, every few minutes the students check back in with Nathan and he refines technique and corrects mistakes. The genius of that strategy is it accelerates students' comfort with the dynamics introduced to technique by a live, resisting body. This pedagogy really shines in jiu jitsu because of how frequently a student needs to be working between two or more possible techniques that depend on feeling an opponent's defense. I'm still really new to bjj, but the way I'm learning it at Recreate is fantastic. Not to mention, it is a lot more fun than shrimping up and down the mat for a half hour.
tl;dr - fitness classes are wholistic and accessible. bjj classes are fun and practical. Culture is inclusive and supportive. Try it out.

To train with a coach who is invested in your game is a true privilege. Come through the door, Nathan will care whether you are having fun and how your personal BJJ journey is going. His wealth of knowledge and effective teaching techniques are amazing. The training partners are also awesome - there are many high level Jiujitsu practitioners, both men and women, who are more than happy to share their knowledge.
The fitness program is amazing - it is a 45-min of functional fitness/movement class in a group setting. Within one to two months, I was able to tell a big difference in my body. The overall schedule throughout the week is structured very conveniently.

It's a really great place to get a good, fun workout in. And it's a really welcoming/supportive community for learning jiu jitsu.

One of the best hidden gems in PDX. Nathan Jeffers is a 3 stripe black belt who teaches both fitness and Brazilian Jiujitsu. Small family atmosphere with diverse skill levels, high level instruction, and personal attention make this an amazing gym for every experience level. Very affordable and positive culture. Ideal gym for a beginner or more experienced jiujitsu player. Highly recommend.

I have been practicing Jiu-Jitsu for four years now. The first 3 years I progressed as expected then found myself unable to formulate “my game”. I struggled and was frequently frustrated. It wasn’t that I wasn’t putting in the time or that my coaches weren’t good, the problem was that nothing felt tailored to me. Then I started at Recreate Fitness about 9 months ago. Instantly I was getting more personalized attention and instruction in line with my body, my age and abilities. Now things are beginning to emerge from the mist and come together. Not only am I doing Jiu-Jitsu at Recreate, I am doing fitness there, too. It is so convenient and it segues nicely with my Jiu-Jitsu. In addition, Professor Nathan is truly interested in what I need and that we all have fun while training, whether fitness or Jiu-Jitsu. There is also a great group of ladies that is growing quickly. I couldn’t be happier with Recreate and would highly recommend it. It’s a true family and a great community.

Recreate provides the best boutique gym experience for those looking to have fun, get in shape and/or learn JiuJitsu from one of the best in the Fitness and JiuJitsu industries, Professor Nathan Jeffers. The training, facilities and community are second to none for those of us who are turned off by the big corporate gym experience. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
