I travel a lot for work and always drop-in to CrossFit wherever I go. I have been doing & coaching CrossFit for a decade and very, very, very, very, very, very, very VERY rarely do I stumble upon a gym like Risio. This gym is gorgeous on the inside and is clearly well loved by its ownership & coaching team. I had a fantastic class late on a Friday evening with Bethany who brought a ton of energy and amazing coaching to a class with a diverse level of capacity & skills. She did an amazing job of making sure every person had scaling options to have a successful hour of fitness

I loved how inclusive, welcoming, and open Risio & its team were. If I lived in Portland, I would train at Risio.

I was skeptical of crossfit for years, but wanted something other than just running to stay in shape, and crossfit definitely fits that need. Couldn't be happier with Risio, too! As someone new to crossit, of advanced age (40+ 😢), a knee surgery, and busted shoulder, I appreciate all the modifications the coaches suggest to make sure I don't re-injure myself. They want you to hit your goals, which are unique to every athlete.

I joined Risio Athletics after moving to Portland in January and couldn’t be happier with the decision. The staff are knowledgeable, supportive, and genuinely invested in helping members succeed. The programming is top-notch—blending barbell strength, bodyweight skills, and conditioning in a way that challenges you but is scalable for all levels.

What sets Risio apart is the community. It’s welcoming, encouraging, and strong in every sense of the word. Whether you’re brand new to fitness or an experienced lifter, you’ll feel right at home.

Their mission says it all: Lift Heavy. Live Big. Risio Athletics is woman-owned and operated, and it shows in the thoughtful, empowering culture they’ve built. I’m grateful to be part of this community and highly recommend it to anyone looking to move better, feel stronger, and live bigger.

I've been going to Risio for almost 10 years, and I love it. Stellar space, equipment, programming, coaching, and community. Margaret is equal parts welcoming owner and absolute badass. If you are looking for a crossfit style workout in the portland area you really can't beat Risio.

Me encanta hacer ejercicio con la comunidad de Riso Athletics. He asistido clases aquí por casi diez años. La propietaria es simpática, los entrenadores son afable y competente, y levantando pesas, corriendo, y sudando con los miembros fuertes es una alegra.

Risio Athletics is truly a gem in Portland! From the moment you walk in, you feel the strong, loving, and supportive community Risio has built around its members. I tried most of the cross training style gyms in the area and have happily found my gym home at Risio! What sets Risio apart is their genuine commitment to inclusivity. Everyone is welcomed and encouraged, regardless of their experience level. The coaches are knowledgeable and create a positive, motivating atmosphere. If you're looking for a gym that focuses on getting stronger while fostering a fantastic community, Risio Athletics is the place to be! 💪

I initially joined Risio simply because of it's convenient location —and I’m SO glad I did because now I can’t imagine being anywhere else. Community is at the core of many crossfit gyms, and Risio’s is truly something special. I'm pretty new to Crossift and couldn't be happier with my experience so far. It's way less intimidating than I thought it would be. All the instructors are warm and supportive and the other members are friendly and welcoming. The gym itself is incredibly spacious and never overly crowded. The classes feel accessible to various levels of fitness and I'm experiencing different muscle groups are sore after every class! Today it's the glutes!

I’ve been a member of CrossFit Risio for 2 months now and have a plethora of positive things to say. I started doing CrossFit 3 years ago while living in So Cal, and that box was everything to me. So after moving to Oregon my husband and I were determined to find somewhere similar, and I can confidently say that we have.

All of the coaches are attentive, ready to help how ever they can, and overall genuine people. I love the programming and love the fact that it’s done in house. The members are also very welcoming and supportive.

I would highly encourage anyone who is interested in CrossFit to check out Risio, you won’t be disappointed!!

I joined CrossFit Risio about 3 months ago— it's a fantastic CrossFit box! The coaches (both Nate and Jeff, y'all are so kind and helpful and knowledgable, and of course the owner Margaret when she's teaching too) are super great, and the owner goes above and beyond to make sure you're getting what you want to be getting out of the gym.

They have all the equipment you could want for a wide variety of CrossFit activities. It's also well maintained, and there's enough of it that you're at worst/at the busiest class only sharing with 1 other person.

The first month I joined I was overwhelmed with the intensity of the workouts, and Margaret noticed that I was working through something when she asked "How are you liking CrossFit so far?" She helped me understand scaling/how I could be adjusting the workouts for what I was aiming for, and it's been smooth sailing for me ever since. I really appreciated both her taking the time to walk me through that, and her proactivity in reaching out to me to see how I was doing both then and throughout my time at Risio.

Sadly I've had to take a break for the last few weeks because of a bad case of COVID (caught somewhere else), but I'm excited to get back in and train again at my own pace with the support and encouragement of the terrific coaches and other athletes in the community at Risio. Miss y'all!

Awesome facility and located 5 minutes away. It was easy to find, although I wish it had a Risio sign outside. Their website was nice to navigate through and book a drop in session. Margaret the owner communicates and follows through and she looks like a beast. Nate coached the class and he was super informative and answered all my questions. They have showers too and it was the first crossfit gym I’ve seen that offers clean towels. Overall, this would be a great home gym or drop in visiting.

I joined CrossFit Risio (PE prior) about 2 years ago. I had been searching for workouts that involved more strength training, but included the class component since I was unmotivated to workout in the gym myself beyond running. Like many have expressed, I definitely had fears of jumping into CrossFit based on a lot of preconceived notions and stereotypes (poor form, being forced to lift with too much weight, super competitive). Thankfully, this gym is the polar opposite of that. The coaches emphasize correct form and fully recommend choosing a weight that is challenging to the specific person, but still gets the appropriate stimulus.

Ever since joining, I've stuck around for a number of reasons. The coaches are amazing (and all around great people), and do a great job of creating a healthy atmosphere for everyone to work out in and feel welcome. Second, I've never been stronger or healthier than I am now. The programming is well thought out and incredibly varied, and I always know I'm going to get my butt kicked (in the best way). Working out here has translated well to other parts of my life, whether that's PRs in half marathons or just being able to be more active in other activities. I also feel way more comfortable with lifting and overall strength training.

Last (but certainly not least), the community. The community here is incredibly friendly, welcoming, and we all come from different walks of life and have different experiences. Everyone is encouraging and we cheer on everyone to accomplish whatever version of the workout works best for them without any ridicule. With how difficult Portland can be to make friends or meet other people in general, I've not had that issue here. Even after moving across the river to Vancouver and having multiple CF gyms be a much closer commute, I still brave the 205/84/5 traffic multiple times a week because of how incredible the community is.

Simply put, give it a shot! It may be one of the best decisions of your life (like it was for me).

Risio was the very first CrossFit gym I ever went to a year and a half ago. I was really intimidated by the idea of CrossFit, so I searched for a place that was women owned, and inclusive. This gym is now where I spend the majority of my free time. Every coach is attentive, and pushes you just when you need to be pushed. When I sprained my wrist and ankle for 6 weeks, the coaches helped modify the workouts for me so that I could still come and feel included and not fall behind in building strength. Many times I’d show up to class and they already had something tailored just for me (THANK YOU NATE!).

The owner Margaret is just a gem, and she really has built such an incredible community of people who support and push one another, and make working out super fun. I don’t think I’ve ever not been excited to come to a class, and that is saying a lot!

I started CrossFit PE over 2 years ago and have fallen in love with the community ever since. With the transition to Risio things have only gotten better. Margret was and is the best thing that happened to CrossFit community. She has brought order, professionalism and passionate people who have contributed to what has now become Risio. Even after moving out of Portland area I have continued to be a part of CrossFit Risio. I love the fact that it helps me get started with my day with a great team of passionate people and a challenging workout that keeps you going for the rest of the day. I’ve always wanted to have a workout routine but could never motivate myself to set up a schedule or learn about workout techniques or how to do the movements properly. Being a part of Risio helped me get into a healthy lifestyle without the hassle of planning and training. Every time I come to the class everything is already planned out and every move is demonstrated and challenging enough to keep you moving towards your goals. Even each year is structured to help you achieve full body health and fitness. Communication has always been great too, at Risio you can expect clear and detailed information about what’s happening now and what’s planned ahead to help you stay motivated and involved. Even if there’s something that may not meet your needs, Margret is always willing to hear your feedback and improve as such. My only hope is to be a part of this community as long as they are around.

I love this gym!!!!

Margaret is super strong and inspiring!! Her and all the coaches really know what they are doing!

We often receive ques during the workout. My Olympic lifts have gotten a lot better!! Though still need work :)

All the coaches spend a good amount of time during warm up and that is so nice. I've had bad shoulders from swimming and since joining the gym, I've been injury free!

The community is great! Everyone is there to work hard and is super positive!!

Recommend it to local folks or for out of town dropins.

CrossFit Risio has been a core (pun intended) improvement in my fitness and my overall life! Huge flexibility in class timings throughout the day (including open gym times) have made it easy for me to never miss a day when I want to get a workout in. CrossFit gets (justifiably in some cases) a bad reputation for encouraging poor form and injury-inducing behavior. That is NOT the culture at CrossFit Risio. The coaches focus a ton on warm ups with emphasis on coaching the fundamentals of the movement you're going to be working on at the start of each class. If you're ever experiencing cronic or acute injury, coaches are also quick to check in on how to scale movements down to be most beneficial for you.

Also, the people (Margaret and all the coaches) and community (the other athletes) are amazing. Cannot recommend highly enough!

The traditional gym environment was never for me. As a mountain biker, I spent a lot of time on the bike and realized my body had developed quite a bit of imbalance, leading to some overuse injuries in my lower back and shoulders. A friend suggested I check out their local CrossFit gym, so I decided to take a beginner session with Margaret. After that initial session, I knew that CrossFit would be the perfect way to cross-train for mountain biking. I signed up for a handful of private lessons to start because 1) I was super shy and struggled in groups, and 2) I wanted to make sure I understood the basics to prevent any injuries associated with CrossFit. Having graduated from the personal training, I now try to attend classes at least twice a week. The coaches are amazing; you can go at your own pace, and overall, I feel so much healthier and stronger. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a fun and functional way to get strong.

I've always wanted to try CrossFit, but was absolutely terrified (been in and out of PT for 20 years for my knees). I heard all the horror stories of drill sergeant coaches and a competitiveness that pushed you to the point of injury. And you had to be in really good shape going into it. Wrong!!!
Curiosity and boredom with regular gyms finally got the best of me. I researched and read all the reviews for the boxes in my area and landed on CrossFit Primal Energy. Best decision ever!!
The coaches are amazing! They genuinely want you to succeed, and it shows in everything that they do. The people that go there are just as awesome. Everyone is super supportive and the only person you are competing with is yourself! And if you need some guidance on nutrition, they've got that covered too!
I signed up for the Nutrition Challenge with Katie and lost 4lbs of body fat in 5 weeks! She gave me a nutrition plan, recipes, and held me accountable for what I ate. And she was supportive when life got crazy!
I'm seven weeks in and I'm able to do lunges, jump rope, and run more than 20ft without pain for the first time in years. The workouts kick your butt, and yes, your muscles will be sore, but that's kind of the point right?!
If you are looking for a community that will help you reach your fitness goals, whatever they may be, this is the place!!

I've called Crossfit PE my home gym since 2016! From the beginning everyone was very welcoming and helped me feel apart of the community. After doing the normal gym (think 24 hour fitness) thing for a few years, I took some advice from a friend and gave crossfit a try. When I came to do my free trial sessions I found the owner, Lauren, to be very helpful and encouraging. I was hooked from that point!

The other gym coaches, Nancy and Toby, have been incredibly proactive in giving feedback on my lifting technique, as well as giving me guidance for proper stretching and mobility to make sure I'm improving my range of motion. With this the owner, Linda, has provided nutritional plans to help with a wide range of needs for clients. If that means correcting your diet or just making minor adjustments, she has always been there to help.

Over the last few years I've seen numerous people join Crossfit PE from all walks of life and abilities. Even if you haven't worked out in 10 years, this place can help you get back into it. It has always been an open and inviting atmosphere and I would highly recommend joining if you're looking to do something new or are just looking to continue crossfit. Lynn, Troy, and Natalie will be here to greet you and welcome you into the community that is Crossfit Protein Epiphany!

I've been coming to CrossFit PE for 2 years now and I'd highly recommend it. I came to the area with 2 years of prior CF experience under my belt and was looking for a box with challenging workouts, a motivated and inclusive community, good coaching, equipment for a tall person like myself, and ample physical space. CF PE has all of that, and I've been coming back each week since.

One of the best parts of my CF PE experience has been the experienced coaches correcting my form and bad habits that I picked up during my fitness journey. They instruct gently but firmly, and I appreciate how they've molded me to be a better athlete.

If you're looking for a new CF home or are wanting to try something new with your fitness, give CF PE a try and see if it's right for you. I've observed that the atmosphere is very open to newcomers while still providing solid support to veterans. Try it out!

There is so much to say about Crossfit PE. My love affair with this gym began 2 years ago and I have been faithfully waddling through their doors ever since.

I am slow, uncoordinated and I often forget something as soon as I'm asked to remember it. Needless to say, I would never think in 1.5 bajillion years that I would ever have stepped foot inside a CrossFit gym or stuck around.

But this place is a total gem. Here are a few highlights:

Absolutely magical coaches: good coaching is hard to find. I have found that the coaches here are a rare blend of kindness, patience, knowledge and general bad-assery. It's truly a place where it's obvious form and technique are very important. The coaches here are really, really, really (you get the point) generous with their time and are eager to help you with any of your weak spots. They are really astute teachers and trouble shoot techniques with you until you get it. In addition, if you are nursing an injury or are just getting back into exercise they always offer accessible and manageable scaling options.

Inclusivity: people here are genuinely kind and make a point to try and know who you are. I love that there is a diversity of people from all fitness levels here. There is not a whiff of a "bro" vibe here; just amazing people who are wanting to get crazy strong together.

Crazy fun workouts: the workouts are sooooooo fun and varied. I will never ever ever go back to a wretched elliptical or stair master. These workouts are addicting... you get done in 15 minutes what some people might try and do in 3 hours.

Instant mood reset: I cannot tell you the number of times I have entered the doors of CrossFit PE like a tired and grouchy old man 👴🏻 and left like a giddy school girl drunk off endorphins!

If you are looking for a new CrossFit home or are bored with your fitness routine and want to try something new, CrossFit PE is an amazing choice :)

While visiting Portland I checked out multiple boxes and this was, hands down, the best one. Coaches are friendly, knowledgeable and they scaled workouts for those who needed it. Workout was explained well and they coached and encouraged me knowing that I had Crossfit experience which is a HUGE plus. Most times when you drop into a CrossFit box with experience no one ever coaches you. They remembered my name and made me feel like I was a part of their family. It’s obvious that community is a huge part of what they do, which is another reason why they’re so special. Whether you’re visiting or looking for permanent CrossFit box this is the one for you! My nephew has several serious health issues that are progressive. CrossFit PE is keeping his skeleton and muscles flexible and strong as he ages. Beyond that, he's proud of his workouts and comes home praising Tobias, his coach. The rigors Tobias puts him through are varied and challenging. It's great to have found a gym that has staff with heart and skill to help. Conventional, closer-to-home places where he has belonged had no one trained to help with his special needs, and his workouts were simply the stationary bike.

I started working out at CrossFit Primal 2 months ago. I was starting back up after an intense shoulder surgery and basically sitting around for the previous year. I was a little scared about what my body was going to be able to handle, but new that I needed to do something.
The staff was very inviting and walked me through a 2 week training course to show me proper techniques for lifting, and scaled versions for exercises I could not yet perform.
It's been 2 months and I am know going 3 days a week with 5 other colleagues from work. I have dropped 30 lbs since I started, but more importantly I feel healthy and my stress levels are down. I'm thinking more clearly and do not have the body aches I was experiencing from laying around and not exercising.
If you are looking for a great gym, with great people, I strongly recommend CrossFit Primal.

I got connected with Crossfit PE with a New You 6 week challenge. Laurie and her team are very accessible to ask questions, not just at class but email and Facebook (our challenge had a group page). I'll say this- totally worth the money, high quality coaching. You will get in what you put in. I just finished the 6 weeks , lost 8 lbs and 3 inches off my waist. More importantly I learned new and healthy tools on nutrition and did some things I thought I couldn't do, like deadlifts and thrusters and wall walks.

The team at Crossfit are skilled to scale workouts to variety of levels, and do so without judgment or negativity. They also ask about past injuries and chronic conditions. This is really important to avoid re-injury or a new injury.

I've done other team/group conditioning and sports with old school coaches who have the one size fits all mentality which has led to injuries in the past. I've also talked with people in the health care and fitness industry who talk a lot about crossfit injuries. This is a valid concern. I can say specifically at Crossfit Primal Energy the caliber level of coaching and engagement resulted in me pushing myself physically but without injury.

Garry and I trained at PE crossfit this past week while we were on vacation in Portland. We are weightlifters and just needed a gym home for a week. I emailed a few other weightlifting and crossfit gyms but could not accommodate us for a few training sessions or were asking for a ridiculous amount. We are so lucky to have found PE crossfit and Laurie (the owner) was more than accommodating! We trained in the back corner with platforms while they had CF classes going on. We were able to do our own thing. PE crossfit had weightlifting bars, bumper plates, and change plates. If you are in the Portland area go check out PE crossfit! Thanks again Laurie! -Angie and Garry

PE was my first Crossfit gym and I can't imagine going anywhere else. The atmosphere is welcoming and extremely encouraging which can be helpful during long strenuous workouts.
The coaches at PE are top knotch and have extensive knowledge in other sports as well as Crossfit which allows them the ability to coach anyone.

I went to many CrossFit boxes in Portland and this one is completely different. They have a huge focus on mobility and making sure everyone is safe. The community is great and was super welcoming from the start. I would highly suggest checking this one out.

Amazing workout! I was fortunate to spend a week working out at CrossfitPE. Not being a crossfit person, the team at CrossfitPE took the time to teach me how to perform the exercises correctly. I loved the classes. They are fun and everyone was supportive. You get a strong sense of community between the coaches and the class. The coaches are exemplary professionals and extremely knowledgeable about their craft.

You couldn't ask for a better group of coaches to make you strive to be better! I absolutely loved working out there, the owners, and coaches truly care about you and they are very helpful with getting you to where you want to be. If you're looking for "the right" crossfit gym, this is it. Laurie and Ben are the best!! :)
