I started training with Rachael in October and have been really happy with how much stronger I feel after only 2 months. She’s knowledgeable and realistic about getting leaner, building muscle as a beginner, and seeing noticeable progress.

I was skeptical at first because the sessions are only 25–30 minutes, and I didn’t understand how that could lead to results - but after almost two months of 2-3x a week, that skepticism is gone. The gym’s approach focuses on working each muscle group to fatigue/failure, which makes every session efficient and effective. You finish one muscle group and move right on to the next, so nothing feels wasted. If you stick to a meal plan alongside that (which Rachael helped create at my request), it becomes a surprisingly effective system.

I also really appreciate that Rachael’s willing to work with clients on price. It shows her genuine desire to help people improve and not just sell packages.

Overall, Rachael is encouraging, listens to your goals, makes workouts feel approachable, and is a great coach. I recommend!

If you're thinking about starting strength training, I can't recommend Rachael enough.

Before working with Rachael, I had zero strength training experience. I'd never touched a barbell - the closest I got to a deadlift was picking up boxes off the floor. Now I'm deadlifting 200lbs and squatting 140lbs (more than my bodyweight). Going from complete beginner to those numbers still feels unreal to me.

What really makes Rachael stand out is that she actually listens and knows her stuff. I have some gastrointestinal issues that can make certain exercises tough, and instead of just running me through a generic program, she modifies movements to work around that. She knows what my body needs and makes sure the programming fits me specifically, not the other way around.

If you're a total beginner who thinks strength training might not be for you, or if you've got your own physical limitations and aren't sure how to work around them - Rachael will meet you where you're at and get you results. She's patient, knowledgeable, and legitimately cares about making this work for you. Best decision I made for my fitness.

18 month update: When I started, I was squatting the bar—no weight, just the bar. And last week, I hit a personal record of squatting 225 pounds. I'm in awe. Tony's the best!

Tony is an incredible trainer. There are so many things to love about him. He's the strength coach I wish I had when I first started lifting weights.

Two notable things specifically jump to mind.

First of all—and perhaps most importantly—he's extraordinarily credentialed. He knows what he's talking about, and it shows. He focuses on research-backed ways to achieve your fitness goals efficiently. Even better, he's always revising and improving his knowledge. He's not someone to make you push through an exercise without an appropriate understanding of form and technique. He's not someone who just expects you to lift heavy things—he wants you to get a focused workout that both works for you and is rigorously backed by science.

Second, he's nice. Like, really understanding and focused on what makes a person most comfortable. He's always down to answer questions, and he gets excited about your goals as if they're his own. He's likable, and he works really hard to make sure you walk out of each session a better version of yourself.

I can't recommend Tony highly enough. If you're looking for someone who effortlessly balances a relentless focus on scientifically-proven exercise and an affable, approachable demeanor, Tony is your guy.

I met Tony at another location that he shared with a trainer that my wife was seeing. My wife was impressed with his training etc and felt that he could help me. Unfortunately the other trainer that my wife was seeing was a joke!! Anyway Tony has a passion for his field and it was obvious. I suffered from bad posture and Tony helped me to get rid of my “ turtle man” look as he put it. Tony helped me in more ways than one, and eventually after my prodding ( she saying goodbye to her former trainer who made a killing off of her) began to help my wife, who had suffered from extreme back problems. Thank you Tony!! Hopefully you can make sense of this and realize that I personally recommend tony 200%. I am back seeing Tony again after Covid etc. he’s amazing. Knows his stuff. Tony literally saved my life over 10 years ago. Doctors couldn’t figure out what was wrong with my back—but Tony did. We worked through some tough challenges, and he got me strong and off the floor. I even bought him a Superman jacket because, to me, he surpasses Superman!

Fast forward: I spent the last four years caring for my mom and neglected myself. I started training with someone closer to home—big mistake. Within a month, their inexperience caused a major injury. I texted Tony, and within five minutes he called me, saw me, and got me back on track. Two weeks later, I was training harder than ever. Eight weeks in, I’m in the best shape I’ve been in 30 years—and for the first time, my stomach is getting flat!

Tony’s “I don’t care” mantra? HA! As if! It’s just tough love. He cares deeply—that’s why he pushes his clients to be better than they think they can be. I call him Preacher, Teacher, Trainer Tony. His old-school gym has amazing energy, and Darius and Rachel cheer me on every single time.

Update 10 Months Later:

I just squatted 315. I walked into the gym this morning and Tony looked at me and said, "today, you start a new chapter." He put the plates on the bar. He turned on the theme to Superman. He handed me the belt. There was never a moment where I doubted myself. Tony was so certain that I could do this that I couldn't doubt it. I lifted it. I lifted 315. A year ago, I could barely squat the bar. Unreal.

Still absolutely LOVE working with Tony, he is an amazing human and I'm so thankful for the opportunity to train with him.

I am excited to say after over 20 years of misplaced effort, I have finally reached my goal weight of 132lbs. I created this goal based on the time I was the most fit and leanest in my late 20s. I have always had a healthy lifestyle with a healthy diet and regular exercise. During my 30s, I remained within 10lbs of this weight but couldn’t quite get back to it. During my 40s, I began to drift further and further away from my goal weight despite still doing all the “right” things nutritionally and exercising more and more.

When I was 50, I was over 170lbs and stopped tracking my weight and began to believe I should shift to a more realistic goal. I was lucky to find an exceptional provider who informed me to achieve and maintain a healthy weight, strength training with heavy lifting is required in conjunction with sleep, stress management and balancing hormones.

I hit the jackpot when I found Tony Sandbothe to train with. When I started strength training, my weight was in the 160s. After working with Tony for about a year and gaining muscle, I was down to the 140s. However, those infamous last 10 lbs took almost a year to come off. As we’ve all heard, the slower the weight loss, the more likely it is for the weight to remain off. Now, at 52, I’ve achieved my goal weight, my weight is stable, and I continue to get stronger and more defined.

I absolutely LOVE working with Tony. He is personable and positive and I always feel like a badass when I walk out of his gym. When I started training with Tony, I was on the verge of giving up on my weight and body composition goals. Now, after only 3 months, I have seen more change in my body in that time with less effort than I have over the last several years combined.

Tony has a super flexible training style and has never insisted or pressured me to adopt his own philosophy on diet to reach goals. His approach is successful whether you’re starting as a plant-based yogi trying to land a handstand (like me) or aiming to break the weightlifting record for squatting. This is the place, I promise you. Working with Jesse has been the best experience in training I've ever had. I'm making gains faster than when I was in the military (Infantry) and without the constant state of pain between sessions. Jesse has paid keen attention to my body and designed a program that pushes me exactly how I need it to. The dynamic in the gym is playful, encouraging and supportive. Safety is prioritized while hard work is emphasized and recognized. The gym's small size is ideal for making efficient use of time and space. As an elite judo athlete, all I can say is- I know passion and intensity when I see it. Tony’s vast knowledge, painfully thorough explanations, and deep understanding of the hard sciences are on display throughout my whole session with him. Every question I had for Tony was broken down into bite size bits- and explained thoroughly as not to insult my intelligence… but to ensure my understanding of the topic at hand so I can absorb, apply, and execute.

I never felt as if I was on the clock, I never felt like I was asking a stupid question, and I never felt like I was not actively listened to. The respect that was shown to me was greater than any coach I have ever encountered/hired.

As for the lifting?

I didn’t know my body was capable of such feats of strength, as the ones planned out by this magical man with the aura of confidence only seen in movies.

Throughout my rather successful judo career, I had small stints of trying to work my way around a barbell. Much to no avail. Turning pro at 17 years old, I only wish I had a strength coach as competent and well read as Tony. I say (with roaring confidence) that I would very realistically have made 2 Olympic teams for the United States of America with his guidance.

Very confidently- I learned more in 2 hours with Tony, than I have in 20 years of high level judo training/experience. I have trained directly with several Olympians, World Medalists, and Division 1 athletes that could not hold a candle to Tony in terms of knowledge, regarding both sports science and effective lifting/strength training techniques.

Nothing but good things to say about Tony’s operation in the humble space he commands with his lovely wife down in Portland. I only drove about 3 and a half hours to get world class instruction from the man himself- small price to pay.

I recommend this gem to anyone in the Pacific North West looking to get stronger for whatever reasons they deem necessary. A single talk with Tony will open your eyes to the world of strength and its superbly beneficial nature, and I can only speak from experience. The man knows what he’s doing.

I came to Sandbothe Strong with a fifteen year old hamstring injury that I felt like it would never heal. Doctors and physical therapists were always content that I could walk and even run, and the message was clear that I the medical system felt they did all they could for me. I tried strength training on my own, yoga, dived deep into YouTube and reddit and nothing worked. Finally I decided to contact Tony. I am sure this is a long journey, but I have seen more progress under his guidance in two months than I have in 15 years.

My sessions are intense, customized, and carefully coached. Tony also is a community builder. I get a little time before and after my session to meet the other people in the orbit of this gym and it is a positive, diverse, and fun community. After my hamstring is recovered I am certain I will continue my relationship with Sandbothe Strong.

RESULTS after a little less than a year. My PR for a back squat went from ~215 in a smith machine to 405 with a barbell! Almost every session with Tony there has been measurable and apparent strength and mobility gains across my lifts. My hamstring mobility has gone from barely being able to lean forward without feeling a painful snag in my hamstring to being able to comfortably touch my toes. My legs feel functional again in a way they haven't in at least fifteen years.

I've been training with Rachael for six months and have made more progress than I expected. My goals were to get stronger and deal with long-term aches from desk work. The shoulder pain I'd had for years is completely gone.

Her workouts are efficient and effective--just 30 minutes, twice a week--and I've doubled my bench press and can squat 220 pounds. I feel stronger, more mobile, and more confident.

Rachael emphasizes proper form and safety, which helped me overcome my fear of injury. I've never felt pushed beyond what's safe, but I'm always challenged.

On top of the strength gains, I've gotten a lot of compliments about looking fitter and leaner, which has been a nice bonus! I highly recommend working with her.

Been working with Darius for 6 months and the changes in my strength have been incredible. I had plateaued hard lifting on my own with online programs, but after my first few weeks I could feel the program he’d set up for me kicking in. Update!

Im writing this review because my PT has asked me to and I don't wanna feel the repercussions. But seriously Darius has pushed me to accomplish things I thought weren't possible. I see a total 180 from how I looked when I started. I told myself, as cliche as I thought it was for new years, I would start working out. I picked the right place coming here, even though half thetime I wanna yell back at him. I know he means well and wants to push me to be better. The hard work is worth it. I started training with Tony a few months ago. I'm in my mid 30s and haven't lifted since high school, so while it's been really challenging, it also feels safe and fun. Seeing progress even with only a single short session per week has been really exciting! It's been a great complement to my other main activities, biking and yoga.

I've been biking almost everyday for 8 years and haven't felt a dramatic difference in my riding until a few months into training when I noticed popping a little wheelie in intersections unexpectedly. It's been a great feeling noticing differences like that throughout my life.

I’ve been training with Tony for about 10 months now and it’s been a fun journey. I’ve never done strength training like this and Tony definitely provides the foundation and knowledge one needs to learn in order to be successful. Edit- it’s been little over three years since I started at the gym and as I said before it’s been a fun journey. This year I decided I wanted to lose weight. In January 2025, I started following a nutrition plan in addition to the two days a week I train. It’s now April 2025 and I’ve gone down four pant sizes. Working out with Kristen has added so much to my life. I started working out with her at 9 months postpartum, I was a mess. Kristen met me where I was (weak, misaligned, stiff, and ashamed to be SO unfit), she guided me kindly and expertly. I’ve only had one hour a week to spend on working out, and hands down I can say that this time couldn’t have been better spent. 6 months in (again, one session week) I am stronger, more flexible, more stable, and I like how my pants fit. I don't even know where to begin with my praise and gratitude towards my trainer, Darius. Not only has he been a fantastic personal trainer, but he has also helped me find inspiration in myself. I started seeing Darius just over a year ago, and I have surpassed what I thought I was capable of in every way. I went from squatting 100lbs to 165lbs in just seven weeks, going twice a month, which was previously unfathomable to me. Although he can be my least favorite person at times, I continue to come back every week because he believes in me and has shown me how to believe in myself.

I reached out to Tony in the spring of 2024 upon moving here to Portland. Unfortunately my first training session was put off for a couple months due to a bulging disc in my back (causing painful sciatica). When I explained my issue with Tony he went into great detail about what he knew about my condition. He prepared me for the road ahead and told me his strategy on how he would be working with me. For the first two months, I showed up as scheduled but had some really rough (painful) days. The pain I was experiencing was 24-7 and was really wearing me down mentally and emotionally. Tony had me do exercises that were effective yet not aggravating AT ALL to my sciatic issue. Not going to lie, I had a couple days there where I broke down simply for the wear and tear the pain was having on my psyche. Tony was kind, VERY encouraging, but also no-nonsense. I am currently several months into training with Tony and have experienced a decrease in my pain almost completely! Not only that but I am now able to start deadlifts!! I am getting stronger and stronger with Tony's tailored techniques and constant encouragement. I can honestly say, at 54 years old, I've been to MANY different gyms throughout my life and paid for SOO MANY personal training sessions and Tony is hands down, BY FAR, the single best trainer I've ever worked with. His breadth of knowledge alone is highly impressive as well as his ability to tailor workouts to my specific limitations. He is the real deal. I had a bad experience here. First, the facility is extremely narrow and machines are packed in tight. It is a lawsuit waiting to happen as they let small children run around freely too.

If you’re a thin person or are athletic to begin with this is probably a good gym. If you are someone who battles with weight issues Darius is absolutely not the trainer for you. He is inexperienced, unprofessional, impatient, and judgmental. My family has been going here for several years and they pursued ME to join. From what I hear from the rest of my family, it’s not an isolated incident with Darius. I thought the owner Tony would have more loyalty to clients than that but based on recent events I was wrong in that assertion too.

Edit: proof in the owner’s deaf reply. The customer is wrong, it was the customer’s fault, loyalty means nothing to them, and their unprofessional trainer is flawless.

Just wanted to update my review a bit as we’ve really evolved the training over the last year to shorter, single set to failure sessions. They’ve been transformative and have had an incredible impact on my body composition and fat loss.

When I started training with Tony, we were really focused on bulking up and building muscle. Within 2 years, the results were clear and I successfully gained nearly 40lbs of muscle mass. But as I was bulking, I still had a bit of a belly as is to be expected when working towards this kind of goal.

This all changed a little under a year ago when we switched to single set to failure, shorter sessions. These session may be shorter but are much more difficult and yield real results.

I’m still gaining more muscle mass yet my belly has largely gone away. And I continue to bulk up but with great composition.

If you’re serious about getting a real training program, hit Tony up! If you’re not serious, don’t bother. He’ll have to fire you eventually.
This training is worth its weight in gold.

I’ve never been super into weight training and I fell out of the habit of going to the gym when I had a baby at age 40. At nearly age 50, one of my closest friends told me I should start weight training. He talked about how beneficial and important weight training is, particularly for women as we age. When Tony first asked what my goals were I said it was to cut my body fat % in half and he just nodded and said something to the effect of “yeah cool we can do that, anything else?” Leaves you very confident that your goals are within reach as long as you follow the plan.

He’s a good trainer in so much that I’ve been exercising 1 day a week and my squats and lifts have gone up over 50% in weight, with more reps, and I got out of the stall in fat loss I was experiencing.

For people that need a lot of stuff explained to them for reassurance or curiosity, Tony understands the interlocking “why’s” of what he’s telling you to do and can break it down for you, which can take your mind off the stress of having to figure more things out.

If you’ve gotten to the point of reading reviews for a personal training you’re looking for someone that’s going to give you a return on your time. Considering I’m exercising less, lifting bigger weights and losing more fat, the return is huge. Health aside, I’m getting more of my week back, more time to live life outside of the gym or recovering from it is a big plus.

My son had been working with Tony for a number of months and encouraged me to try. But I had a back injury that I got when working with another trainer at a different gym, so I was very hesitant. I knew it would be good for me though. (I’m 58, have severe osteopenia, and my doctor said that building muscle would be good for my bones.) So I started slowly working with Tony and I’m so glad I did. 1) There’s no distractions in the gym. No televisions, not lots of people to get distracted by. I love that. This is no nonsense. 2) While training, Tony has his eyes on you the whole time, every time. So I have faith that the second I veer into incorrect form, he’s there to catch me. 3) His method of training is different than what I’d seen at previous gyms. I suspect it's different than anywhere else. Tony has a deep wealth of knowledge from his years as a trainer and his years as a professional athlete. The man knows how best to get results. My benchpress number had been stuck for years. Tony thought it was ludicrous and promised to set a new max record on it within three months--it took him only two. And it took only another two months to double it. My lift numbers are higher than ever before.

I am a 34 year old, queer female that was referred to Tony to fix my continuous chronic back pain. I was a prior collegiate athlete that also experienced a bulging disc starting at age thirteen. I have had 5 invasive surgeries, including a discectomy with implanting a barricaid device in between L4-5 lumbar spine. I have tried multiple providers/treatments: PT, acupuncture, diet, pelvic floor exercises, massage, swimming, ice/heat, yoga, etc. but would only provide temporary relief or even make my pain worse. After working with Tony for two months I was back to cross country skiing, long backpacking trips and being able to move through my day without distracting, debilitating pain. I trained at Sandbothe Strong for about a year and a half, and let me tell ya, this place is the real deal. It’s owned by a lovely couple, Tony and Kristen, both of whom are not only phenomenal trainers, but phenomenal people. I personally trained with 2 trainers here, Jenn, and Kristen, both of which helped me achieve so many personal goals of mine and gain about 15 pounds of muscle and a lot of confidence over the course of a year. I started here having never touched a barbell, and am now at a point where I can bench 205, squat 315, and deadlift 335.

Everyone that trains and works here seems to have a very healthy mentally towards exercise and fitness, and everyone is super supportive of each other. It really feels like the trainers want the best for their clients, and at the same time they are always open to feedback and will listen to you if you feel like a particular exercise just isn’t seeming to work for you. I would recommend giving this place a shot if you are someone that just wants to become a better version of yourself. The reason I am not able to train here anymore is because I am a busy full time student and part time EMT and I decided it made a little more sense for me to utilize my college gym just for convenience sake, but I promise you if it weren’t for my busy school schedule, I’d make the commute any day of the week!!!

All ages welcome, all levels welcome, it really just doesn’t matter who you are when you step into this gym, the trainers will always be there to help you become who you want to be!

5 stars for Kristin Sandbothe!!

After suffering from lower back injuries from sports and exercising incorrectly, I was hesitant about performing back squats and deadlifts. I didn’t need to worry. The Sandbothe Way focuses on correct lifting technique, religiously. Never before have I had a trainer place so much emphasis on bracing my core, pushing my knees out to engage my glutes, and correct grip and placement of the bar. I’m 38 years old and I’ve never been stronger!

Because the training is so good, it seems to attract a lot of good people, which makes going even easier. And for what you get, the rates for each session are extremely good value. Kristin could easily charge more.

Also, don’t be put off by the before and after shots of Tony and Alex on the Sandbothe website. They might look like meatheads but they are actually cool dudes:)

Like many of you I checked the reviews of this place before deciding to give it a shot. I'll add to the other glowing reviews here by saying stop looking around and get in touch with Tony RIGHT NOW if you want to work out at a serious gym with a trainer who knows their stuff.

One of the things I've been most impressed with is how all of the trainers here are able to adapt workouts to suit the level you're at now. Doesn't matter if you're young, old, too fat, too skinny or anything in between. They'll be able to set you on the right path by focusing on the fundamentals first and then slowly helping you progress at a pace that works, but keeps you from getting injured. As far as the workouts, they'll have you covered.

On top of that, you can tell that everyone in the gym wants to be there and takes pride in their work. Tony has done a great job of creating a positive atmosphere that's going to make you look forward to your next workout instead of dreading it.

I really can't recommend Sandbothe Strong enough and at the very least I encourage all of you to give Tony a shout and see if this might be the place you've been looking for.

One of the things that I most appreciate about his training style is his attention to typically undertrained muscle groups that typically cause power lifts to lag behind. He's good at the mental game as well as the physical, and will learn and utilize what motivates you personally. His combination of established methodologies ensure that that you can lift to your potential. If you care about your success as a weightlifter, care about your health and fitness, and you get an opportunity to train with him, take it.

I will say this, Tony and Kristen make a incredible duo. They have helped me in more ways that I can put into words. Tony is a genius, he will say some outlandish stuff.. like most genius types do. Understand that it’s part of his charm. Oh, and he can’t spell for sheet!

Myself, I started weight training to help with my confidence and to get stronger. I met and achieved many goals including a pr squat of 405x6.
