What a wonderful experience! I was in town visiting friends and came here to climb for the day with friends. I like variety of different styles of routes and that their level is based of their color which made it easier to do the routes. The staff was super friendly and funny and gave me a full tour of the facilities. Would definitely be a member here if I live in town. Will come back next visit! Thank you!

staff were nice and setting was interesting and fun, relatively small bouldering gym only. several major qualms however: 1) no loose / powder chalk, which really hinders my ability to climb and im a sweaty girl, liquid chalk just doesn’t work well for me, and i didn’t want to be disrespectful and not follow this policy 2) mats are extremely firm and not quite wide enough, multiple times i felt as if i needed to spot strangers because they got so close to the concrete 3) really dark in some parts of the cave areas 4) eight (?) different color grades on a circuit, which i find is way too many but this is a very subjective opinion

This place is fantastic. I was a bit scared to try bouldering for the first time, but everyone was so welcoming and kind. Cody even took the time to show me the basics and gave me a tour of the space. You can tell the people who build this place love what they do and want you to love it too. 10/10 can’t wait to go back.

Skyhook's route setting is so unique and creative, you don't have to send difficult routes to find really engaging projects. Staff is friendly and their customer service is incredible. As someone who frequently works night shifts, the value of 24/7 access cannot be understated.

Such a great climbing gym! 24 hour access for members, incredible staff, and great climbing technique classes included in your membership or day pass! Yes, it is a little small, but I greatly appreciate how they're goal is to create an accepting, open community and not just a gym. I also LOVE their gym rules & etiquette (e.g., no loose chalk, no beta spraying, etc). This gym is definitely worth the membership!

Great vibes. I've been a member at several other larger corporate gyms where I enjoy roped climbing and big gym amenities, but I'm happy to leave it all behind for a cheaper membership and the nice community gym energy here.

It's not huge, but it gets interesting problems set frequently enough that I'm not bored by the selection. The free weight/training area has enough equipment for me and the small coworking space is a fun touch for days when you need to be productive but also move a little.

The hours are sparse compared to a big corporate gym, but I don't care because members get 24/7 access (!!!). The only bummer is when I want to bring someone on a guest pass and have to wait for their staffed hours, but I'll take it for the savings they evidently pass on to members.

In the last few months, I sort of 'fell into' bouldering at Skyhook. As an older adult, I find it scary, thrilling and very fulfilling to problem solve The Wall. And to do it in this supportive environment of everyone succeeding after a few falls is a very encouraging life skill. I see life as navigating the landslide. It's humbling. Mastery achievable. Focus required. Thank you.

Love the gym, the staff, the setting. Sure, it would be great if the gym were larger, but they make up for it in quality. Entry level routes are interesting and reward good technique; more difficult routes are challenging and require good technique. If a middling route feels hard, it means it has something the teach me. Love it here!

Skyhook Bouldering is an absolute gem! It’s more than just a climbing gym—it’s a welcoming space where you can connect with an incredibly friendly community. Cody’s passion for climbing shines through in the thoughtful design and atmosphere he’s created. The staff are fantastic, the fitness area is well-equipped, and the climbs are both creative and fun. Whether you’re brand new to climbing or a seasoned pro, I highly recommend checking out Skyhook!

This place is an absolute gem. The staff is super friendly and helpful, the routes change regularly, there are tutorial videos for each route via QR codes, and they even ran a "Buy Nothing" day on the retail boycott day, Feb. 28, 2025, where entry was free, which was so awesome. Only real complaint is that I'm a beginner (I do mostly purple and green routes, though I fail most of the greens) and the vast majority of folks here are way more advanced than me so it can be a bit intimidating. But that's my problem to get over, nothing about the gym. Overall, an amazing addition to the community.

Skyhook is a solid bouldering gym and an exceptional community addition. I love this spot and after a few months of coming multiple times a week, it was an easy decision to bump up to the yearly membership.

24/7 access, 2x/week route setting, indoor bike parking, plenty of room to keep out of the way of other climbers (some other gyms are a bit cramped when trying to navigate while staying out of fall zones), clean space, clear and specific etiquette, a co-working space with standing desks and couches, showers, and traditional weightlifting equipment.

Routesetting at my level (V0 - V5) has been consistently focused on skill advancement and conditioning rather than “just be tall” or over-relying on dynos. I see this as a considerable benefit as it’s a nonverbal signal of inclusivity and welcome to women/shorter bodies (I’m 5’4”) and it's an indication of competent routesetter hiring. There’s also a direct feedback mechanism on the route leveling as they use the app Griptonite which lets users vote on route level (whether it should be higher/lower or it’s just right). This is nice because what may seem like one rating to the setters and their builds may end up a completely different rating once it’s been climbed by a variety of people with multifarious builds. They also use a color-coded system for route grading in which each color represents a set of V-scale ratings and the colors slightly overlap in difficulty. This stops you from focusing on “I can only do up to this V-rating or color” and helps you to just try stuff. I really can’t sing enough praises for the routesetting here. Informally, I’ve looked around the gym and observed 50%+ femme-presenting folks at times and I don’t think that’s an accident. I think that’s a result of thoughtful etiquette and high-quality route setting that doesn’t sandbag or require climbers to be a turbo-jacked dudebro to complete.

The folks working here are all very good noodles — Jamie, Cody, Joel, Nathan, Lincoln, others — they’re all super responsive and helpful when I have questions or need something. There’s never been an instance of me providing some feedback and worrying that I might be brushed off or that my feedback might disappear into some opaque system that I have no visibility into.

Upcoming stuff includes a spray wall that’ll eventually be a training board that we get to vote on. Democracy in action! Ya love to see it. Also a plant wall that community members will be able to add cuttings to which I find charming.

Ideas (none of these are necessary and may not be accomplishable): sauna, outdoor trips when the weather permits, women and nonbinary climb night (or queer climb night!), throw up a screen and stream climbing films, blackout night (simulated night climbing, turn off the lights, wear headlamps), route setting clinic, brews and bouldering (boulder then go drink beer somewhere e.g. Baerlic), 2 climber training clinic : body type variations (e.g. have 1 expert who is a 5’2” woman and another who’s a 5’10” dude, have them show examples of how their technique differs on the same climbs), some low-key competitions could be fun too.

Tl;dr come check out Skyhook, is good

If you are interested in learning to climb and are willing to boulder (rather than top rope) I think this is The Gym in Portland. The low grade routes are consistently fun and challenging -- aimed at teaching technique rather than rewarding strength. From V0 to ~V3 these are easily the best routes in town.
Routes maintain quality at higher grades, though there are relatively few at V8+ (so if you're projecting V10 maybe this is a visit site rather than a home base -- or maybe you come at off hours and start traversing and linking the climbs like outdoor boulders).

The setting also aims to be aesthetically pleasing, which is a fun variation from other gyms (though this does mean the routes are less compressed, and thus there are fewer)

Very much a small neighborhood climbing gym in the old school or European style--minimal lifting area in favor of some extra seating. No grand corporate shiny-ness. Just a decades long unused warehouse turned into a community space next to two of the best bars in town, good Mexican food, and my favorite brunch spot.

Now if only they could raise the roof fifty feet and install some bolts. . .

Really fun comp-style routes, a lot of good terrain, cool ambiance, good price, and some new-agey features that were really interesting to use (the climbers can choose the music after hours!) and really really cute decorations. I'm essentially a complete beginner, going to skyhook as part of my journey to rebuild strength after months of bed rest and weight lifting restrictions, and this place makes me feel super welcome. As an absolute beginner, I’ve been to other bouldering places before and found them intimidating, but the staff was so proactive about giving us a proper orientation. Even my partner who used to climb a lot had never gotten such a thorough instruction.

It really makes this feel like a space where safety is a priority, as well as building strong climbing skills, and the design of the walls are really clear about progressing from beginning to more advanced levels.

If you’ve been curious about getting into bouldering, don’t hestitate to try this place out, it’s an ideal place to start.

Been coming multiple times a week since it opened and words can’t express how much I love it here! The owners Cody and Jamie have done a great job making everyone feel welcome and creating a safe space for climbers of all levels.

The setting is creative and technical. Nothing is straight forward, lots of interesting problems that are actually fun to climb. They’ve also been consistent with updating the walls every couple of weeks which was my biggest issue with some other gyms in town. It’s a modest gym in size but they’ve done a great job keeping the walls fresh and unique.

The best part is that the gym is open 24/7 for members! Plenty of parking right in front and having the gym all to yourself is a luxury in itself. I’m really happy these guys decided to open a gym that’s convenient, thoughtfully designed and doesn’t break the bank!!

Best climbing gym in Portland! Jamie & Cody have done amazing job with the place & have created a really inviting & friendly environment. Their presence, combined with it being open 24/7, really makes you feel at home.

The setters are awesome & have created a really unique concept for the entire gym. Each section of the wall has a correlating theme with scaling difficulty, making it great for progression! The problems are well balanced with an array of styles for all climbers.

I would say the sets lean more on the technical side, stressing weight distribution & crisp movement over pure strength which I’ve experienced at many other gyms.

Have to go here!!!

I am going to go ahead edit my review to include a description of the three stars given the pretty surprising response I received. As there appears to be a misunderstanding with the reason for the three stars. The reason for the rating is the quality of what the facility currently has to offer is pretty average, especially as compared to the other climbing options in the greater portland area. That's not a bad thing, it just is what it is.

The primary positive is there appears to be creative setting and no jug ladders, even for the most widely accessible routes. But beyond that it is aggressively average. The negatives or neutrals are that there is not much beyond bouldering walls which are not exactly packed with routes. The weight area doesn't offer a huge variety of options or space. The climbing training specific apparatuses (spray wall, training board of some sort, etc.) are not yet in residence.

Hope that helps Cody.

This is exactly the bouldering gym that Portland needed. Amazingly fun boulder sets and a friendly staff. All of this coupled with 24/7 access (for members) makes this the ideal bouldering gym for those who care about bouldering. You won’t find and “make you feel good jug ladders” here. Even though there are plenty of easier climbs for beginners, they still force technique and make you think. Far better approach than other gyms in the area.

Shout out to Coach Cody, super nice guy who clearly loves what he does!
