I've lifted without a coach for awhile and stopped making any real gains. My wife and I decided to start at the Starting Strength in Beaverton and absolutely loved it. The coaches were super knowledgeable and very good at helping you understand how to lift without injury and maximize the benefits from the effort. I learned so much!

Started in March 2025, after five months I've seen huge gains in strength and learned correct techniques to prevent injuries. Great environment, wonderful people, fantastic coaching from the most knowledgeable & dedicated staff -- Amanda and Joshua are the best!
This gym is all about results. I've gained muscle & power, lost 8% body fat, and I'm still on track for steady increases. Doesn't matter your age or current fitness, they'll find a program that's ideal for you. Everything I hoped for!

Month 3 of Starting strength. I am new to weight lifting and wanted something dedicated to heavy weight and overall strength. Great experience so far with Amanda as coach and keen eye for proper form and gradually working my body into something it has never done before.
Fos someone who has never really done well or enjoyed weights in general, this is a great experience.

My neurodivergent teenage son had an incredible experience at Starting Strength Beaverton! Not only did he learn how to lift safely, but he also got genuinely excited about hitting new milestones—something that surprised me, given that he hasn't enjoyed exercising historically. I was thrilled to hear him talk about how kind and supportive everyone at the gym is. It’s such a positive environment! If you’re looking to lift weights in a welcoming, non-intimidating space without the bro-culture of traditional gyms, I highly recommend Starting Strength!

I am 75 years old and have osteoporosis in my spine as well as hip. The training I received is excellent! Amanda coached me on correct form as well as inspiring me to challenge myself. I made strength gains that really surprised me because of her encouragement and excellent training. Thank you, Amanda!

This is a long overdue review. I trained with Starting Strength Beaverton in back in 2023 and feel fortunate that I did it. The gym is excellent in the way it works - you have 100% of the coach's attention on the working sets of all lifts. They analyze every minute detail of your technique and give you immediate feedback during and after the lift - an excellent model for safe and effective progress in lifting. They figure out programming for you and also advice on nutrition. The coaches go through rigorous training and apprenticeship and it shows - Amanda, Rob and Jordan were highly competent and also fun people who don't take themselves too seriously. I saw drastic strength gains during those months and significant improvements in body composition! Moreover, I didn't get injured even once. The cost may seem steep at face value but you get more than what you pay for.

I've been training at Starting Strength Beaverton for the past six months, and my experience has been transformative. The coach, Amanda Shepard, brings an extensive and deep CV to the table, working with a diverse group of individuals in our noon slot—from a 27-year-old man to an amazing, strong 80-year-old woman. Her expertise and personalized approach ensure that everyone gets strong, regardless of age or starting point.
Personally, I joined Starting Strength at the urging of my daughter. My doctor had advised me to avoid lifting more than 20 lbs due to chronic lower back pain. Before joining, I went to physical therapy twice a week and the chiropractor once a week, which I no longer need. Now, instead of paying medical bills, I'm investing in my long-term health. At 60 years old, I'm shocked to say I deadlift 160 lbs. The improvements in my daily life are remarkable: I can fly up stairs, haul compost bags in the garden for hours, and rearrange my furniture on a whim.
The program’s focus on fundamental barbell exercises has not only alleviated my back pain but also significantly boosted my overall strength and confidence. The supportive and motivating atmosphere at Starting Strength makes it an ideal place for anyone looking to improve their fitness and outlook on life. I highly recommend Starting Strength Beaverton to anyone seeking a structured, effective, and proven strength training program.

Starting strength is one of the best things I've ever done for myself. Amanda is a wonderful coach, knowledgeable and personable. The classes are fun and the people are all great. I look forward to every class. I am amazed with how far I've come in just a few months and I feel so strong! If you want to better yourself and feel strong, this is the place to go.

Starting Strength has changed my life for the better! As a member for the past four months, I have massively increased my strength and health through the excellent personal one-on-one coaching by Amanda Sheppard. Starting Strength was recommended by my doctor for safety and efficacy in reversing osteoporosis. I highly recommend Starting Strength to anyone, regardless of age or fitness level, that is interested in increasing muscle mass, bone density, strength and balance in a safe and fun group environment.

I’ve had an excellent experience at Starting Strength Beaverton. Amanda is an amazing coach - extremely knowledgeable, and skilled at communicating and giving you the right cues and feedback to improve. I’ve learned so much more about lifting in the short time I’ve been going to Starting Strength than in many previous years of reading and watching videos and trying to figure things out on my own. Everyone that I’ve interacted with at the gym has been uniformly positive and welcoming - this is a great place to come if you want to get stronger but have been intimidated by a traditional gym environment. The small group format is great too - you get a supportive community along with the personal attention of a highly skilled coach. I also feel that you get great value - it’s important to me to know that if I’m investing time and resources into something, it is an effective program and I’m going to see improvement, and SS is exactly that. I highly recommend checking it out!

What a fun environment! I joined as a complete novice to lifting of any kind. I'm a couple months in and it's changing my life! I've met basically all of the coaches at this point; they all are passionate and knowledgeable.
Starting Strength Beaverton also accommodates for schedule changes, which has been helpful since I hate to miss a workout. I live 45-90 minutes away but it's worth it to me because this is the best way for me to learn their philosophy to building a strong body. Come try them out (especially if you DON'T live so far because then what's your excuse? )!

What: Lifting Heavy --- you know you need it! You hear it all around you in podcasts, articles, memes and posts. Why? Because it is the KEY training that will get you to your goals. The only questions left are How, When, and Where? How do you GET the training that actually makes you strong? That is the tough question you just haven't been able to solve with your online-cardio-dumbell-fusion thing, your wacky-colored big box gym membership with only two squat racks, or your yoga and Zumba classes a few times a week. These tough questions are ALL answered at Starting Strength --- the only place that really solves the tough How, When and Where problem. At SS Beaverton (the only one in the West coast) you have regular 2x or 3x a week sessions with highly trained and wonderful coaches to teach you the lifts safely in a fun group setting. You gradually add weight every session, and you naturally trigger your body to adapt and get stronger without confusing or dangerous movements, or inefficient high volume reps. You're just building strength and muscle every week without fail, sparking those natural health and longevity changes that you know will come from, say it with me now, Lifting Heavy. In short, you need it. And lucky for us, here it is...right in our neighborhood! Five freaking stars, fellow health seekers! —- See you there. 👍

Starting Strength Beaverton is more than a gym. It is a safe, supportive, close-knit community of people of all different ages, backgrounds and abilities committed to their own growth. It has been nothing short of miraculous for me in surprising ways. It took me over a year of listening to my brother's zealous claims of how transformative this gym and its esteemed coach is, and I couldn't help but be skeptical, especially with the price tag. But when my last attempt at PT failed me and I was so weak from chronic illness, I bit the bullet and gave it a try. I was astounded to see that within a week I could feel my injuries (low back, knee, shoulder, neck) healing up, I was getting stronger, and my self-concept was dramatically shifting based on what I thought was possible and what my body is actually capable of. I've since had a 90% reduction in migraines, cut my anxiety medication and sleep aids by half, and can now squat more than my body weight after 3 months of training and being nearly bedridden the year prior. The secret sauce to this amazing place is the head coach, Amanda. She is extremely knowledgeable and experienced and threads the needle of being empathic/intuitive and a solid, tough guide who will help you get where you didn't dream possible. Even with all of my health issues, I knew very quickly that I was in good hands, and I couldn't be happier. My brother told me early on that he would pay double for all that he gains from being at this gym, and I was shocked at the time. I chuckle at myself now, because I know exactly why. This is the best investment I've made in my health and wellbeing in a very long time.

Absolutely amazed by my experience at starting strength. Been going to this gym with my husband for over 7 months now and that was the best decision we’ve ever made! Amanda is the best coach to have as she is very passionate and knowledgeable in lifting. The most impressive part is I live with a chronic illness, so sometimes my body doesn’t respond to training like others. Amanda is so good at what she does that she has even tailored my workouts to where I am able to recover, even when I thought some days with my illness it wouldn’t be possible. I go in every week hitting a new PR in something and I’m so glad to have her as my coach. I will never want to go anywhere else now that my husband and I have found this gym. It’s totally worth it, there’s a great atmosphere, and I have always felt welcomed here. The owner, coach, and clients are great and I’m so glad we found this place!

This is the real deal. The Starting Strength method has stood the test of time for decades, and the head coach here, Amanda, is the most knowledgeable and competent coach I've ever come across in my life. I'm 42 and am moving around much more weight than I ever did in my 20's and 30's, and with way better technique, too.
If you're on a good lifting program and are following it correctly and consistently, amazing things can happen!

The community at SS Beaverton is an amazing environment! I attended the Squat and Deadlift camp and totally enjoyed the experience. The head Coach Amanda Sheppard is amazing, spend even 30 minutes with her and you will know why she is the 2022 SS Coach of the Year. Her ability to communicate is spot on! She has eyes everywhere and provides words of encouragement, cues for improvement, and will keep your programming moving forward. The gym is laid out very effectively and is bright, clean and the equipment is amazing! The SS bar feels so good in the hands and benching from a hard surface instead of a padded bench was eye opening. If you want to get stronger and live anywhere in the area you should join. Live too far away go hybrid or on-line. In addition to camp I attended the 7 am group and observed the noon group, fabulous welcoming members of all ages and experience.

Great gym! New facility with all new (and matching !) equipment. Starting Strength is a training method for getting stronger through a proven method, this isn’t a “fitness center” with treadmills or cable machines. The trainers Amanda and Adam are terrific, they are able to get anyone, regardless of age, gender or fitness level, to gain strength rapidly. Easy access location right off the freeway, excellent value for the amount of individual attention given to each trainee, can’t recommend highly enough.

I’m a relatively young guy who had been looking to get stronger for a while, but had trouble finding the right direction and breaking through plateaus in my strength. Starting strength Beaverton has been an amazing fit for me.
I tried out many other gyms in the Portland area, but I never found the right fit. Sometimes the coaches didn’t have time to give me personalized attention, and sometimes they didn’t really seem willing to push me hard enough.
I found the perfect balance here! You get three in person sessions per week, and the coaches are personable, knowledgeable, and push you hard.
I’m the 4-5 months since I’ve joined, my bench has gone from 135 to 215, my squat from 155 to 325, and my deadlift from 205 to 385!
You will feel amazing here and get amazing results!

Wanting to improve my fitness and work with some back pain I was having, I met with my health care practitioner. His prescription for me was to train with Starting Strength Beaverton. I'm a Senior Athlete (a polite reference to being a 68 year-old woman!), and couldn't believe it was recommended to me to start doing exercises such as squats and deadlifts. But I decided to give it a try. That was 3 months ago, and I feel so grateful to have been referred there. Head coach Amanda is terrific. She both challenges and encourages me, all with a great sense of humor. My confidence as an athlete has grown, and I can lift and squat more weight than I ever thought possible. It is helping in my day to day life, teaching me how to move correctly so that I can continue to hike and be active in my life. We are so fortunate to have a Starting Strength Gym in the Portland area. I am hooked. If you are at all curious, do yourself a favor and them a try!

Facing my 60th birthday in 2022 I did a lot of research on the best way to get in shape. The Starting Strength method was (is) exactly what I needed. Fortunately one just opened up here in Beaverton. And WOW - after just 3 weeks I am really convinced I made THE RIGHT decision. My body composition is already starting to transform beyond what I expected at this point. It is still a journey. I have complete trust in Head Coach Amanda, who has deep experience as a strength coach to collegiate athletes. If you thought you could never do something like this, then Starting Strength is the right place for you. If that sounds too much like a sales pitch it is because I have found new confidence in my ability to get strong. The best health care plan is good health. I can't recommend this place, these coaches and the Starting Strength method enough!! Come join me!
