By far one of the worst experiences that I’ve had. He ghosted an appointment that we had. Which he scheduled and sent a meeting invite for. When I showed up lights were out and door was locked. I sent him an email to let him know I had arrived and he never responded. Ten minutes later he cancelled the calendar invite. I then emailed him about him not communicating and canceling the meeting during the meeting time….of course you could have guessed no response to that.

He doesn’t provide his phone number in any emails so you can’t even contact him on the fly. The number associated with his business profile on google is never answered. He has my phone number and never tried to contact me.

Terrible way to run a business.

*Updated based on his inaccurate account of what happened with proof of conversation acknowledging the appointment time and reaching out to him via email after arriving to locked doors.

If your livelihood is your business you should conduct business with a certain level of professionalism. Also, thanks for admitting that you double booked yourself.

I am a mother of 2 young children and a working professional. I’ve worked out with StrengthFarm for over 4 years. Sam is disciplined, consistent, professional and extremely knowledgeable and talented. He practices what he preaches. My body and strength has significantly improved, since I’ve been training with him. I’ve lost fat, gained muscle, learned how to eat properly and workout more efficiently.

He doesn’t believe in the hokey, marketing schemes or fads. If you want real results and a real, focused, consistent trainer - Sam is your guy. If you are a person who needs hand holding, false information or someone to boost your ego - he isn’t the right fit.

He’s always on time, accommodating to life scheduling conflicts and always available for any health or wellness questions/concerns/injuries.

By far best trainer in Portland!

I've been working out at Strength Farm for over year. Im a 40 year old over the hill athlete with old injuries, that still really enjoys a good group workout. Sam and his people do an excellent job taking care of the people they are training. I've seen really good results and I'm a big fan of the strength training combined with endurance and mobility they offer. If you are thinking about trying them out, I highly recommend dropping in for a class. Sam is the truth!

Great programming, coaching, and community. Awesome holistic focus that covers performance maximization, injury prevention, and mixes it up so it doesn't burn you out or get to boring. If you are considering, definitely don't hesitate to sign up for a month to see if it is a fit for you.

I rarely write reviews, if any at all. But I just had to write a review about a place where going to workout has become as routine as laundry or brushing my teeth. Sam, Mikel, Alex, Colleen, Jessika and Natalie are all great coaches and conduct very enjoyable classes. The facility itself is well-maintained and they offer a varying degree of staggered classes that applies to all levels of fitness. The coaches take their time in going through proper form with you and suggesting/integrating mobility work so that you don't injure yourself. Sam is also a great owner and has responded quickly with any issues I've had with the box or payment. The box also integrates seamlessly with the MindBody app, and that makes booking classes a breeze. I always thought it would be hard to find a box as good as the one I had in Singapore so I never bothered looking for the longest time. As luck would have it, I struck gold on my very first try.

SIX STARS.

I did a month trial at this gym and decided not to continue and eventually moved to NYC. When you sign up, you give them your email information. I went to this gym for less than a month over a year ago and I STILL keep getting email newsletters. I've tried to remove myself from their email list, doesn't work. I've emailed them about this issue close to a dozen times with no response and no luck, still getting emails. I tried calling, no one answers. It's illegal to not allow people to remove themselves from email lists, I've tried contacting them MULTIPLE WAYS for an entire YEAR with no luck. Clearly the fact that I live across the country doesn't matter, they continue sending emails. My friend who tried the gym out with me has done the exact same thing and still gets email updates as well. Since they won't stop sending me emails nor respond when either of us ask them to take us off their list, I'll probably report them to the better business bureau because this is absurd to still be happening a year later.

I highly recommend you look up Sam at StrengthFarm. Safety and correct form are first and foremost and he works wilth your level. I saw a noticeable difference in my energy level and stamina after only a few weeks. Even though I travel and am very busy he has many class options for all throughout the day.

I joined this gym on a whim January 2017, hoping to find a gym that I could find community and commit to working out regularly. And this was it! I initially joined with the month groupon discount and decided to commit to the whole year because of how great the coaching and programming was. The coaches really ensure that if you're a beginner you learn the movements correctly, that really mattered to me. Also I've had some injuries that have caused me to modify the movements and all of the coaches have been awesome about it.

I love this place and it's changed my life and has changed the way I look at myself and wellness. I would recommend this gym over and over again to anyone!

Good programming, excellent coaches, well priced, and lots of class time options. I've been coming regularly for about 6 months now, and I've really enjoyed my experience here. As someone who came from about 2 years off from any kind of workout, I found this program to be very helpful in getting into a routine.

I did a few drop in at a different Crossfit gym and had a negative experience there with the coaches pushing you too hard everyday, with multiple reports of injuries. I didn't think I would ever like Crossfit. This was NOT my experience here at StrengthFarm.

The first month I came, they started me on related movements so I could build up slowly. Each week there is a yoga class, and every other week we work on mindfulness, in addition to a strength or conditioning. I feel like we are really working on every part of the body, rather than just trying to go as fast as you can, sloppily. It's been great to try so many movements, see progress in every area, and also work on skills.

In addition to the programming being great, I've had a really positive experience with all the people there. All the coaches are well-educated and helpful, and everyone knows your name after even a few days. Every coach is dedicated to your goals, every member is encouraging. I've been really surprised with my experience, thank you!

I've also found the pricing to be worth it, Sam does a good job of having a student discount, and I happened to join on a Groupon for a month-very well worth it.

Not normally one to write bad reviews and didn't really plan on writing this until I got a kind of rude response from the owner from an email I sent after I did a drop in. Will say this, decent facility and good coach. Also, looked like I just picked a bad day to drop in.

Scenario:
Strength : 3 Γ— (1-3 rep) back squat at 80%
WOD not for time:
2 rounds
10 hip/leg lifts (5 separate movements)
30 v-ups
30 jumping air squats

I was a bit frustrated that I paid $25 for the drop in and didn't feel like it was worth it. I emailed after saying I was kind of annoyed about the situation. After I wrote my concern I ended with the following:

"I am sure this isn't a typical workout as I saw some great ones on the chalkboard. If you can swing it I would really appreciate a refund or a portion of it. If not, I totally get it as it is my fault for not looking in the website ahead of time for the workout"

Sam responded quickly explaining it wasn't in their policy to do refunds (all good, didn't really expect it) However, he proceeded to say the following in what felt like a really rude and unprofessional response that made me want to write this.

"I did notice you could have gone heavier on your back squats than 80%, as the programmed work was 85-90%.

If you'd like to crush yourself today, try 150 Burpees for time and feel free to email me your video."

I am sure this place is better than my experience and everyone I interacted with including the members were all very pleasant.

It took me 2.5 years to settle on a gym after moving to Portland. The attention to programming and form are what drew me to SF and what has kept me a member for over a year now.

Honestly, 5 stars isn't enough for this place. I;ve been going to StrengthFarm since it opened about 1.5 years ago, and haven't ever looked back. Sam and the rest of the coaches pride themselves on technique first and foremost. This is rare especially in the greater Crossfit community. Sam is the back-to-back weightlifting champion in Oregon in 2015 and 2016, and he's brought all his wisdom, coaching, programming, and overall winning attitude to fruition in the form of StrengthFarm. If you're brand new, looking for something different, or an experienced athlete, why not learn from the best? There's always room to grow at StrengthFarm and to learn how to take care of your body, mind, and overall wellness all at one place. It's hard not to be inspired and motivated here. Seriously, if you're looking for a change, give StrengthFarm a shot, everyone is super welcoming, and the coaches will take care of you!

I also love that there are visible goals, and that an athlete is able to see their progress in a clear and visible way. With Sam's expert programming, a determined attitude, and healthy habits at home, you will most definitely amaze yourself here. Do not think twice. Go!

I have been doing crossfit for about 5 years at a variety of gyms, new and more established, and StrengthFarm is easily one of my favorites. I was having trouble finding a gym I really liked in Portland until I found StrengthFarm. The owner, and teacher for most classes, Sam is great and the people at the gym are a great diverse group of people with a variety of skill levels. At StrengthFarm we get more that just crossfit classes, with integrated yoga, nutrition, and group events.

I came here having no prior experience with cross fit or even strength and conditioning training, and Sam has really whipped me into shape. Coaches are attentive and thoughtful when tailoring and adjusting workouts to meet your capabilities, while working with you to learn the proper techniques to minimize injury and maximize performance in the long run. Since I've started a few months ago, my physical strength, stamina, and mobility have all vastly improved and I can't thank the staff here enough. With such an open, positive and supportive environment, I'd definitely recommend stopping by and seeing for yourself why so many of us are so in love with the place!

This gym has changed my life in so many ways! I have been a member since the doors opened in November of 2015 and have been doing CrossFit for 4 years. The programming is incredible and the results reflect that. This is a great community involving ALL skill levels and ages. StrengthFarm's environment is professional, inviting and FUN. Thank you SF!

As someone who has been crossfitting for over 4 years, I have to say Strength Farm is top notch. I've been going to the gym for 5 months now and have really appreciated Sam's programming and ability to scale exercises for different levels as needed. He emphasizes quality over quantity, which in turn helps prevent injury. We do testing every few months on lifts such as the deadlift, front squat, clean and jerk, and snatch, which allows you to measure your progress. I highly recommend checking out StrengthFarm if you're looking for a new crossfit gym!

I've been to several CrossFit gyms and this has been by far the best. Sam knows his stuff and is a very observant coach. He will push you to where you want to go and not over-emphasize being good at just CrossFit, but focuses on your goals of becoming strong and in better shape. Great atmosphere, awesome people!

Excellent environment, great set up and extraordinary coaching! I have been to CrossFit boxes all over Portland and Sam is hands down the most well-educated coach and teacher I have worked with. His knowledge of technical lifts as well as programming workouts for optimal results is unparalleled.
Aside from the stellar fitness, StrengthFarm is a wonderful community of great people that support and push you while allowing you to listen to your body and do what's best for YOU. As someone who has struggled with low back pain, I want to be pushed to my max because that is the best way to prevent pain from recurring, but have never felt pressure to do anything I felt would be harmful to my back. Modifications and coaching on technique is plentiful!
It has been a blast working out at StrengthFarm, I can't recommend this place enough!

I can't recommend StrengthFarm CrossFit or Coach Sam Johnson enough. The place is great, it has a laid back, relaxed atmosphere and welcomes all levels of fitness and age. I felt compelled to write this review when I saw someone actually left a bad review and said the owner "doesn't listen and will push you until you hurt yourself" Whaaaaat? This person obviously went to a different box or never actually worked out there, either way they couldn't be more wrong about what StrengthFarm is all about. I walked in 5 months ago and immediately felt welcome and I've never been pushed beyond anywhere I wasn't ready to be or treated with anything but patience and respect.

I go 5-6 days a week and under Sam's instruction I've lost 30lbs and gained a great deal of strength and muscle mass and I look forward to working out there for a long time to come. Thanks

I joined StrengthFarm about 3 months ago. This place is the best! The owner/coach Sam is knowledgeable and attentive to proper form and his programming works! I started here post injury and since then have made great progress in my endurance and especially my strength! Supportive community and I look forward to showing up every day. I DO recommend coming in and trying out this gym.. πŸ’ͺ🌲

If I could give it 10!! stars, I would. The owner/trainer, Samuel is absolutely the BEST! He listens to you if you're injured and need to slow down. He will push you when you need a push, texting me an encouraging "LET'S GET IT!" before the morning workouts. He makes you feel AMAZING, knowing he's going to push me but also listens to your own self. If you'd like to try crossfit or are in for the weekend and want to drop in, I DEFINITELY recommend this place. I would NOT recommend anywhere else. πŸ˜„πŸ˜‰

StrengthFARM is a great, family-run gym with a welcoming atmosphere and membership. Classes are a modest size with a wide range of skill and fitness levels. Appropriate for all ages!

Samuel, keep doing your thing bud!!

There aren't enough words to describe how thankful I am for this gym and its owner. Strength Farm has changed my life. Working out can be very difficult but Sam is there for you to encourage you and keep you going! He's not going to push you to do something that he knows is too much. Put your faith in this place and the process and you will be rewarded.
