I have been attending Bhakti movement center for about a year and a half now and I keep going because of the variety, inclusiveness, welcoming, and it’s in the neighborhood. I love all the teachers at Bhakti from my fun Sunday morning giggles class to my evening intensity class. There is always something new going on and they do a great job to foster new teachers and create community.

The best studio I have been to in Portland! The owners Tara and Zeyah are incredible and every class I’ve been to in the last year has had so much intentionality from their teachers. The community the studio cultivates is amazing too!

As a Tribal person of these lands, stepping into Bhakti Yoga Movement Center carries a deep and layered meaning. To practice yoga here is not just about movement or breath—it’s about entering a space where the sacredness of many traditions is honored with humility and care. As an Indigenous person whose own people carry embodied practices rooted in land, spirit, and community, I feel a resonance in how Bhakti holds space—with reverence, responsibility, and an openness that feels genuinely welcoming. It’s rare to find a place where cultural and spiritual practices are shared not with appropriation, but with deep listening and accountability. I’m especially grateful to Tara and the incredible teachers who co-lead this space—they move with integrity, love, and an awareness of the histories held within each person who walks through the door. Practicing here is an act of healing, of reclaiming relationship, and of showing up fully—as both a Native person and a human being seeking connection.

As a queer person of color, I have been hesitant to enter yoga spaces bc many of them have been co-opted by western fitness culture. This queer, south Asian owned studio however, provides not only a safe, welcoming space, but a community with whom I can practice where I feel held and seen. The studio itself is stunning and the classes are curated and taught in deeply grounded ways that always leave me excited to return. I love how people’s time and energy is respected and held sacred, for example, the doors are locked promptly at the beginning of classes as not to disrupt the students who arrived on time and are in their practice. I can’t recommend this studio enough.

I was born in Portland after my parents settled here on Multnomah, Chinook, and Wasco lands in the 70s. I've never seen so many yoga studios emerge as I have in the last 20 years. However, Bhakti Yoga stands out as the most inclusive, grounded in cultural history, connecting practice to justice issues regionally, and no bull shit. I am so grateful for their consistent gold standards in holding space for folks to practice yoga responsibly and wholeheartedly. 🙌🏼

I honestly had one of the most incredible yoga classes of my life here. And I’ve been doing a lot of yoga classes. It was just so well informed and inclusive and lovely. I felt very taken care of through injury.

I advise planning on being at the studio five or more minutes before class time. It appears that they lock the doors right when the class starts. I had planned my timing perfectly so I would be at the studio right at class start time but then tripped and fell on my way to class and was at the studio one minute past the start time and wasn’t let in. I’m not that surprised- I’ve seen studios do this before, but it ended up being wasted money, which is a bummer. Plan for that.

The most inclusive, welcoming, authentic space I've ever practiced yoga in. Teachers are gifted at translating the principles underlying yoga, and the postures, into language that resonates and helps me access all that yoga has to offer. Thank you, BYMC, for finally making a practitioner out of me!

I’ve taken two classes with Bhakti and really enjoyed them. They really challenged me in trying to center myself both physically and emotionally. I’d recommend Bhakti to all people DEIA + decolonial focused. 💌

The BYMC was the first place outside of my own room where I ever felt truly safe and in my body. Practicing at the BYMC has helped me in ways that I do not have words for. Every teacher and student have been incredibly welcoming and kind, making my lil disabled self feel so welcome and wanted. Everyone is invited to take up space and show up in a way that works for them which I couldn’t love more. The way Yoga is taught at the BYMC is both deeply respectful and incredibly playful and fun (which I think is the perfect mix!). I could not have more love for the BYMC and the space it’s carved out in PDX for itself. 5 stars!

Love this yoga studio! I was looking for somewhere that treats yoga as more than just another exercise class, and I'm so glad I found the BYMC. The energy here is incredibly warm, kind, welcoming, spacious, and nurturing. I've been enjoying my new membership and am excited to keep learning here.

Bhakti Yoga is my favorite yoga studio in Portland! They offer an incredibly diverse array of practices and workshops and I had no idea how deep this community was until I joined it myself. As a queer South Asian person, it's important to me to practice yoga in a studio also run by a queer South Asian person, where shared values of anti-racism and decolonization are embodied by all of their teachers!

Highly recommend this studio. They offer classes at a variety of levels so it is suitable for people new to yoga and people who have been practicing for a while. The instructors are inclusive and respectful to people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. There are also donation based BIPOC or trans/queer classes, that make it more welcoming and accessible.

Great yoga spot for a fun different practice every time that is plenty challenging without being over the top with a relaxed group of folks. Easy to get lost in the yoga experience instead of worrying about people next to you.

Bhakti is an incredible studio. It is a place of healing, rest, and rejuvenation. Tara and Zeyah run the place out of love and that love can be felt as soon as you walk into the studio.
Bhakti is a place that fosters community care in a way that feels good, actively addressing global issues and holding the complexities of yoga in today’s world with grace. I am grateful to be both a student and teacher in this space. I hope to continue to learn and be in this community for years to come.

BYMC is my favorite yoga studio in Portland. Zeyah and Tara have stewarded the most amazing community and teachers. Each and every class is grounding. Each teacher is amazing at reading the energy in the room and I always leave feeling amazing. Just GO! You will not be disappointed. AND if you don’t want to go to the studio, you can still support them and get amazing yoga classes at home. Their hybrid set up is flawless and amazing. Really, such a fabulous community.

I’ve been attending the BYMC for several years now, both in person and virtually because the teachers offer nurturing instruction and understand how to adjust the yoga practice to tailor it to each student’s needs and abilities. I’m in my 70’s, and took up yoga later in life, and because the instructors offer various ways to approach each position, I can safely and enjoyably adapt the yoga practice in ways that heal me, make me stronger, and more agile.
The teachers are warm, welcoming, and interested in all who attend, providing a sense of inclusive community. (They offer a check-in for current requests with each who attend.) In each session, I am enriched by some pearls of wisdom, humor, or down-to-earth acknowledgement of our common experience. It is inspiring. When it is possible to attend in person (I live out of state most the year), I luxuriate in the good vibes and aesthetics the studio offers. I hope seniors like myself, or those recovering from injury, or physically challenged, know they are welcome in this center of all ages, abilities, and orientations. There are even chair yoga classes where true yoga poses are modified with the support of a chair so not to cause stress on the body, and yet you finish the session with a sense of pride and accomplishment that you can participate in this healing and emboldening practice of yoga.

Bhakti has changed my relationship to yoga in a wholistic way - moving from the white washed asana practice that the US has appropriated from South Asian lineages to the deep spiritual work that yoga can be through the breath, meditation, movement, and collective liberation that honors its varied roots. Tara & Zeyah have cultivated such a beautiful and welcoming community and the fact that this studio is co-stewarded by queer and South Asian folx is so important!! I couldn’t recommend this studio more ♥️

For the first time in 23 years of living in Oregon I walked into a yoga center owned by a South Asian. It was such an amazing feeling. The space has so much healing energy which I am sure is a reflection of the owners and teachers that teach there. I am so glad I went there and am looking forward to reconnecting with my cultural heritage once again only because I don’t have to worry about it being co-opted and being taught in a manner that is not rooted in its history.

I love The Bhakti Yoga Movement Center so much. I feel forever grateful and blessed to have found your center 6 years ago. All of the teachers are lovely. They all offer their own unique wealth of knowledge. Despite having lost the space due to Covid-19, the online courses continue to offer a platform for movement, growth, change, and renewal. Thank you to all of your instructors who grace us with their knowledge and gentle humor.

I started going to Bhakti yoga when I was 20 weeks pregnant. I highly recommend the prenatal classes with Shana. She is an awesome teacher and great person to surround yourself with. It’s a great community of pregnant women all doing the same thing and that really helped me during my pregnancy if your looking for prenatal yoga in the city I highly recommend coming here!

Definitely recommend this studio for prenatal yoga. I went throughout my whole pregnancy and credit it with how well I felt and how active I was able to be throughout. Not only did it help me feel great and get to know my body better before delivery, but the community aspect did wonders for my mental and emotional journey through pregnancy. Spending time around lots of other pregnant people and hearing their stories was so valuable! Shana does a wonderful job leading the class and all substitutes were great. Totally approachable for all levels of yoga experience.

I am so impressed with this place. Not only did I love the prenatal yoga classes I attended (wish I could have gone to more!), but I am really pleased with the way they handled a mischarge situation. I’ve been to studios that have charged me monthly by error and been defensive when I have brought it to their attention, and charged me anyway. Not this place. They handled the situation with kindness, understanding, and timeliness, which to me speaks volumes about their integrity. I will definitely be back during my next pregnancy, and will highly recommend to friends and family! We need more small business leaders like bhaktishop in our community, who deliver exceptional customer experience. Thank you!

Oh how I miss the bhaktishop since leaving Portland. The space is simple, full of plants and present people. The teachers focus on learning to really feel your own body - bones, muscle facia, tendons, and the interconnectedness of our bodyminds. This was a welcome, and surprising contrast to other studios I’ve practiced in which feel competitive and goal oriented. What a gem. Thank you particularly to Lisa Mae, Zeyah, and Monika whom were the gentle, intuitive guides at a time when I needed to reawaken my self care path. 🙏🏼

I did prenatal yoga here with Shanna. It was an excellent experience that really helped me feel supported during my pregnancy, both from the yoga itself and the community of pregnant women in the classes. I also found some the mental trucks that Shanna helped me cultivate to be helpful during the birth.

this is my go-to place for my daily work-out — convenient for me as it is a 5 mile round-trip on my bike plus the yoga, so quite the work-out. the teachers here are amazing and should be — they teach their own yoga school for authorized certification. the style is vinyasa, which is classical hawtha asana shapes flowing one into the other, almost like a slow, tai-chi-like dance. lots of focus on pranayama (breathing techniques) also, and chanting in bhakti, of course (the devotional aspect of hindu yoga practice. what is more, for those who are new beginners, having out-of-shape body issues (as i have had) or past injury issues, they are very good about watching you and making corrections to your positioning or warning you to gently back off a bit — something you always want to have in any yoga studio. there are all levels, from very beginner to the type of energetic vinyasa class that really gets you sweating and challenges you. if you're new, always start at a level 1 beginner class with teachers like jeannie, tasha or marianne. for mid-range to advanced classes, i can't recommend enough teachers like hari-bhakti, monicka, jessica and lisa mae (who is also the shop owner). also, on the second sunday evening of each month, they have a chanting session for 90 minutes by donation, and all funds go to someone in need. regular special workshops also, on everything from special asana focuses (hip openers, etc.) to aruvedic meal planning. your first time there you can purchase one week of unlimited classes for $20, from there there are all sorts of good payment plans, from 10 class cards to deducting monthly for unlimited classes per month from a financial account. you can also purchase workshops and classes on-line at their web site. for yoga for both physical exercise and delving within, this place has it all.
