SLC transplant here and can say without a doubt that this is THE gym IMO. The route setting is thoughtful but modern, yet still allows you to progress and learn new school, comp-style boulders. The entire space was clearly well thought out. Who knew a local gym by local climbers for local climbers would be dope? Bonus: Double Kilter, rad systems and spray walls, and the newest Moonboard. Still not convinced? To me, this gym is quickly becoming my “third space”. Bring your dogs and cats, be kinda gay and new to the area and feel safe because this gym allows ALL of that. Let’s be real, we are not going pro, so why not climb somewhere that doesn’t care how hard you climb or how much money you can make them? Tomo + PDX = ❤️

I was in Portland to visit friends for the weekend and I'm glad we had time to check out this gym! Super friendly staff, fun setting (mostly modern, compy, coordinated problems with circuit-style grading but no specific V-scale grades), and clean facilities.

I joined in May as a weightlifter curious about bouldering, and the staff has made me feel so welcomed. The strength/weight area is great for a full workout after climbing, and I love that they offer lots of community events. Highly recommend for anyone wanting to get into bouldering.

Premium climbing! The routes are thoughtful, with interesting movement, and are just way more fun than a lot of other gyms. There's a good mix of grade ranges -- the lower ones still being quite enjoyable, and midrange achieving a super good balance of flashable & aspirational. The upper range has some devilishly challenging routes, but there's always one section that looks doable and I end up trying them anyway.

The Tomo team are all incredible humans and there's a real sense of community here.

It's all the good vibes of an old school climbing gym, but with the sexy equipment & sick walls of a modern gym.

Beginner levels are definitely more challenging than at other gyms, but they're a lot of fun and still doable for newbies. Staff is amiable and the facilities are clean. There's other equipment for training and even an area upstairs to unwind.

Try it out! Tomo is a bold and unique climbing gym that probably won’t be for everyone. Routes are consistently and unapologetically compy, dynamic, and coordinated which may be uninteresting for some. However, for those looking to train, those interested in movement and dynamics, and those open trying out novel and immensely quality routes, Tomo is a must-try :)

The non-climbing spaces are also fantastic. Tables and board games, Wi-Fi and tea, couches and a tv - modest workout area, several climbing boards, and several bathrooms/changing rooms :)

One of my favorite gyms I’ve been to, I’ll be back again very soon :)

this gym has really unique, modern setting, and the staff are very nice! smaller bouldering only gym, but i always have a fun time with my partner here. bright and open space. bike rack inside. grading is on a circuit t1 to t6 scale, which is new to me. there's a kilter and moon board and a spray wall. small weights area with hangboards and pull up bars too. upstairs area is cute! they hold events such as crafts night up there, and just seems like a nice area to lounge and hang out. would love to see them on kaya hopefully.

Fantastic, large, sunny bouldering gym with excellent setting. The routes are challenging but fun, with even "easier" problems feeling technical. You can tell that a lot of knowledge and care was put into the design of this space. Very nice workout area with high quality lifting equipment, a mezzanine area too hang out or work from, and regular community events make this gym a great fit for all kinds of climbers.
If I still lived in Portland, I would be here all the time. Great work to the team that brought this gym to life.

Fantastic and fun bouldering gym. I’ve climbed at gyms all over the country and the setting here is among the best that I’ve encountered. Creative without being awkward, cool and sometimes intricate movement even on easier boulders. Never felt shut down on problems due to morphology even as a shorter climber. They also have a 2024 Moonboard, cool-looking spray wall, some nice hang board options, brand new campus rungs and an area with barbells and dumbbells for strength training. This is definitely my new favorite Portland area gym!

Climbing AND crafting?! In one place?!
Not only does Tomo have the most thought provoking and exceptional setting of any Portland climbing gym; they also have created a space for meaningful social gatherings and community. For instance, on my last visit, I battled balancy boulders with the supportive camaraderie of some other enthusiastic individuals. THEN, I ventured upstairs to The Mezzanine, where a craft club was taking place! I met some chaotically crafty characters and even got to repaired a few holes in my PANTS! Moral of the story, Tomo is THE bouldering gym of the land. As a wise man once said, "TOMOTOMOTOMO!"

Absolutely world-class, next-level setting! Topping any problem at your level feels like an accomplishment, and not topping feels like progress. The proprietary circuit grading system with wide difficulty ranges in each level helps truly breaks the grade-think of the outdoors and other gyms. Inspiring problems with wonderful movement. I've been climbing for awhile, but feel like I learn and grow so much here with every session.

Beautiful space for a climbing gym, with lots of natural light and plenty of space to walk around. The setting was fun and creative. I love the upstairs area with tables and chairs for working or playing board games. My only constructive criticism is the walls were pretty sparsely set, so it felt like there wasn't much to climb for each grade range — especially on the far back wall (across from the spray wall), where a LOT more problems could be set.

After almost 20 years of climbing—most of that time spent in the PDX community—I can confidently say that Tomo Bouldering Club is the best spot in the city. The setting is incredible—problems are creative, well thought out, and always a blast to work on. The staff genuinely seems to enjoy working there, which isn’t the case with all the gyms around, and it really adds to the positive vibe. The community here is welcoming and passionate, making it a go-to for climbers of all levels. Highly recommend checking this place out.

Tomo is the platonic ideal of a bouldering gym. Floor to ceiling windows, natural light, friendly staff, new holds and sticky walls, huge mezzanine to work out of, great programming (spray wall night, knitting club, board game night, etc), local community collaborations and partnerships, spacious space (no more falling on people or not knowing where to sit without being in the direct line of a climb), great wall brushes, and my god, the pads!! I didn't know how good pads could be until I experienced these cushions.

But really, it's the setting for me. I'm trying to get away from ~~climbing-grade-think~~ but tbh in just two months of climbing at Tomo I'm already moving up grade levels at other gyms. I'm not just getting stronger physically but mentally. Tomo's setting has me looking at holds differently, trying things I used to walk away from (lol now I'm literally running to some, as in, run-and-jumps), trying things for the sake of trying and giggling a lot. I'm being shown my gaps in technique and then being able to *work on them* at easier circuit levels, which makes it so much more approachable. Even if you're a loyal member at another gym, it's worth a visit to check out this new spot and for another kind of climbing experience!

Amazing space, fun climbing and rad people! I recently got back into bouldering and was intimidated by the process. Tomo has provided a welcoming space with unique climbs that focus on body movement and progression. The team at the gym is engaged and encouraging. Check out the intro to climb classes if you are also thinking of getting into bouldering.

The space is dog friendly so on occasion I bring my dog with me for climbing sessions or hanging out in the community space upstairs - did I mention hang-space/workspace/tea bar/skylights?!

As a seasoned climber, whose partner has worked in the climbing industry for 10+ years, I don't exaggerate when I say Tomo is one of the best gyms I've ever been to. Their gym is pristine and well-thought out, even down to their walking aisles between the mats feeling wider than in most other gyms and the general flow feeling spacious and intuitive. Density of climbs on the walls is super reasonable, and the setting is fun and cerebral without being gimmicky or pandering to a certain climber-type. Their upstairs zone is super cool and gigantic, making Tomo an awesome space to spend a rainy PDX day. The owners are solid humans, and have clearly thought it out well. Don't miss coming here!

This is a beautiful and unique addition to the Portland climbing scene. Very engaging bouldering at all levels, they put high effort into even their more beginner friendly climbs, and set problems that introduce people to new climbing moves and concepts gradually and effectively. For instance, they have climbs that require you to trust your feet walking on volumes nice and low to the ground moving between good holds, but it will still be a good challenge and learning opportunity for a beginner.
At the high end, they have some of the most complex and challenging boulders in the area.
This gym was established by three local, long time climbers who are passionate and awesome people. Tomo is absolutely worth your patronage.

I've been climbing for 18 years, and I've been to 20+ bouldering gyms in Illinois, Colorado, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Georgia, Oregon, and Washington. This is easily the best setting I have ever experienced at any gym. It is so motivating! There are so many 5 star boulders here, it's ridiculous. If you want to get better at climbing, no matter what your skill level, you NEED to experience Tomo.

The setting here is unlike anything i’ve experienced at any other gyms. Lower level climbs are often just ladders, but here they create movements i’ve never had the chance to try before.
I also went to a craft night on the mezzanine and it was so fun with all the collage materials provided and great people to chat with. That community space is really cool, and had a tea station!

This is a cool newly opened bouldering gym. The space is very clean, the staff are very welcoming, and the setting is awesome. Lots of dynamic and slab style boulders that I haven't been able to find in other climbing gyms in Portland.

They also have a full size kilter board (though you can't climb it just yet), a moon board, and a very very cool spray wall for training.

The merch they sell has an awesome design, and is honestly super high quality.

New local climbing gym in the pearl area. Love the name, logo, and vision.

The space is super open, clean, and lots of natural light from all the windows on the wall. The staff is super friendly making the atmosphere very homey.

There are lots of variety of climbing with the large wall sections of climbing as well as the back spray wall with moon board and more. The setting style is very creative showcasing fun and unique movements across the difficulty scale where even a beginner can enjoy a route more than just a straight up ladder.

There is a workout gym as well as an upstairs area I forgot to checkout. Highly recommend and will definitely be back.
