I’ve been going to the group strength + conditioning classes over the past year or so. They offer 6 classes every weekday (6, 7 am, 12, 4, 5, 6pm) plus a few on the weekend, so there’s almost always a way to make a class happen. The staff and instructors are all awesome people, super friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. I’ve taken classes mostly from Jackie, Jay and Britt, and they’re all motivating and highly knowledgeable instructors. This place has been pivotal to my personal growth and wellbeing. Highly recommend if you’re looking for some expert guidance in a group setting, welcoming community, flexible scheduling, and all for a price that you can’t beat anywhere else!

I enjoyed many morning workouts here at the Eastside location. Opening at 6:00 AM, I'd see the group start, but I focused on the free weights. A bunch of new equipment was just delivered for more leg and strength exercises, which was convenient for me. The equipment was in good working order; they had many different bars and weights you would expect. It always felt clean, and everyone was courteous.
Encourage anyone interested to walk in and take a look. Venus was helpful with my membership needs!

I love this gym, not only because of the mindful and varied programming, but because of its hours, pricing, and many options for group classes at various times of the day (which works great for my unpredictable schedule)! The best place to train.
Very welcoming environment.

The manager Venus is great. Dylan at the front is awesome.

The strength and conditioning classes are very well structured and the highlight is the Olympic lifting class. So far I’ve had the pleasure of training with coach Joon, Mac, and Jackie. They all show their passion and have a great attention to detail.

If the place had a sauna I might never leave!

I've loved this gym since i joined in 2020. Its clean, staff are friendly, members smile but mind their business, and there is every kind of equipment you could need. The classes run all day and are a great option for days when you need someone else to kick your ass. Its a great value in two great locations.

I was looking for a gym during a long trip to Portland and absolutely love this place! I like the idea of mixing a CrossFit box with an open gym. Some machines, bumpers, racks, and all the stuff associated with classes.

A bit of everything and a really great rate for a month. Staff was so nice when i came to check it out and my only regret is having to go back to a different gym when i leave. Thanks for creating a cool space!

Excellent gym with something for everyone. Perfect gym for powerlifting, bodybuilding, Oly lifting or just general fitness. Magnus has a very welcoming and friendly community and is owned by Sean Williams (Owner of United of Athletic Club), an IFBB pro with decades of experience. Tons of bars, racks and equipment that is top of line (Rouge, Star Trac, Kabuki and Deadlift Bars). Magnus offers personal training 1v1 or group classes or just an open gym for just training on your own.

As a member for two years, I want to caution you that the recent influx of positive reviews the past week seem staged. It's very suspicious that there was a recent ownership change, 95% of the members left because they felt so disrespected and deeply saddened by the new owner's actions, and now there are suddenly a string of 5 star reviews... so do with that what you will. My experience, as a member who did decide to cancel after watching the absolute horror of this very messy ownership transition, is that yes, the gym is objectively more organized. They fixed the walls and ceiling. They brought in machines. However, they also pushed out the community, fired the most beloved coaches, and have messed up my billing (I mentioned it in front of the new owner, and he just walked away and left his poor new coach, who doesn't do billing, to try to figure it out). In that one action, he showed how little he cares about members and his new coach. The new owner's actions, and failure to act, have continued to speak louder than all the new fancy fake words on their instagram. I am so very sad to leave what has been (and is no longer) a boisterous, positive, welcoming, empowering community for the past two years. Luckily, I have found a wonderful new gym to go to, but this whole thing has left me feeling very sad and hurt, along with most of the other past members. So, if you're looking for a smaller more expensive local version of a Planet Fitness, maybe this is your gym. The new coach does seem nice. However, based entirely on the actions I have witnessed, I do not trust the new owner to actually care about this place or you. So keep that in mind.

Stopped in for an early open gym session while in Portland for a work trip. Sara, one of the coaches, was really welcoming. The gym has everything you'd want: kettlebells, barbells, dumbbells, rowing machines, ski erg machines, medicine balls, and more. I claimed some space off to the side and completed my workout while Sara ran a morning group class, and was thankful to have such a full-featured gym within walking distance from my hotel!

I've been a member of this gym since 2017. In the past, the space was very focused on crossfit style classes, and Olympic lifting. I loved the previous owners, they were both always warm and welcoming. This past April under new ownership the space has somehow has gotten even better. There's much more body building equipment, more regular open hours with a really affordable open gym option now making it even more accessible to folks. The new gym owner Sean is also amazing and has done such good job so far at creating a safe space for ALL body types and the new programming from Sara is truly making working out for all fitness levels and gym experience levels accessible. If you're new to the gym and want a safe space to do so, I would definitely give this gym a try.
Support this black owned LQBTQIA friendly space if you can, you won't be sad.

I’ve been going to Magnus since August 2021 and have nothing but good things to say about it! I am a somewhat untraditional case, and took up weight lifting both to generally get strong but also to help combat several chronic illnesses. The coaches at Magnus are kind, knowledgeable, and endlessly encouraging of every single person who shows up. Workouts are effective and fun, and coaches are always willing to give modifications. Magnus is a gem, and I’d encourage anyone to check it out. Regardless of if you’ve been lifting for years or you’ve never picked up a barbell, you will be welcomed and find community at this place.

Really loved working out this gym!

The foundations course was a great way to get introduced to Olympic weightlifting. The instructors were really helpful, the music jammin', and the class sizes were great. As a 2-year member I've been daily impressed with the welcoming community and well-trained coaches. I started here in the Foundations class with a good level of aerobic fitness, but no weight lifting experience, and have made huge gains thanks to the programming and personal attention. I've also loved the vibe. It's really an Olympic weight lifting studio with a Crossfit box attached, and I've come to expect a focus on skill and technique instead of competitiveness.

This is a great place to learn the fundamentals of powerlifting, olympic lifting, and Crossfit and/or to get into competitive lifting and Crossfit if you're interested.

The staff is very friendly, experienced, and invested in the members and drop-ins, they are always willing to jump in and give hands on coaching during workouts. The members and coaches have done a great job creating an open community.

Pricing is very fair for both drop-in and membership. Also, they have a shower, which is a huge bonus for those who want to workout before heading into work.

I have been attending CrossFit Magnus twice a week for a year an and a half. My normal lifestyle had already been a mix of bicycle commuting, working on my feet and computer gaming. Within the first month, while still in the foundations class, I began noticing muscle definition that I had never seen, or imagined, on myself before. That was fun and a confidence booster, although my goals do not specifically include becoming lean and muscled.
The classes work well for people with very diverse ability ranges and targets. It doesn't feel awkward to work alongside people who are lifting just an empty bar, or twice as much as I am. Coaches provide encouragement to set personal goals and push for improvement but I never feel pressured to meet someone else's goal, some ideal, or to be the "best".
The gender balance seems pretty close to 50/50. Quint, Tim, Nick and the newer instructors Kayla and Christine are all competent and fun to work with.
I tried CrossFit Magnus to spend time with an old friend, about 6 months later my partner joined as well. The social aspect of these group classes has provided me with the motivation to attend regularly and reap the physical and mental benefits of athleticism.

I first went to Crossfit Magnus since it was the closest gym to my new home, but I soon realized that I had stumbled upon gold. Quint, Tim, and Nick are truly interested in bringing out the best in you, whether you're brand new to lifting or a seasoned lifter. I've trained by myself off and on over the past decade and I've had faster gains over the past year at Crossfit Magnus than I've had previously.

The programming uses 3 to 6 week cycles where you focus on a certain skill. For example, a 3 week cycle focusing on body weight and gymnastic movements (hand stands, inversions, muscle-ups, etc.) might be followed by a 6 week strength training cycle, with an aerobic/HIIT component always included as well. This provides great variety and allows for steady, consistent growth in a number of areas.

Quint and the other trainers gladly offer personalized guidance with any physical limitations such as rehab work for nagging shoulder discomfort or limitations in flexibility.

The programming and motivating atmosphere combine for amazing results in speed, strength, and conditioning.

Coach Quint Fischer is amazing... I am a remote client out in DC and fly out about 3 times a year to train in person. Solid programming, attentive coaching, a strong focus on skill and technique (ie safety and injury prevention) as well as how to incorporate whole life wellness. And, Quint is friggin hilarious. Assistant coach Tim is pretty awesome too! The CrossFit Magnus community is welcoming and supportive. The box is classic CrossFit. More than enough equipment to get a good workout, but free of gratuitous frills. I hear showers are coming in spring/summer 2014. If you want to get fit in Portland and think CrossFit might be fun to try, go to CrossFit Magnus!
