I am female, short, 35 lbs overweight, and 82 years old, and I am happily comfortable coming here - so if you aren't 30 and a bodybuilder, please don't hesitate :-). This place has been great for me. I walk a lot, but I knew I needed to work on upper body strength and balance, so I decided to try a gym for resistance training and balance work. I selected this gym because it was close enough to my house to walk to and from and had good reviews. I wanted a personal trainer to get me started - I couldn't afford more than a couple of sessions - so I met with Montana twice, and he is great. Since then - about four months now - I've been coming twice a week on my own and am very happy with my progress. Thank you for being here!

I first started going to UAC at the end of 2020-early 2021 when they were just starting up. It was such a cool place & the atmosphere was friendly, supportive, and inclusive.

I had a personal injury unrelated to the gym that caused me to put a pause on my membership, and the cancellation process was quite smooth and aligned with my expectations. I also waited a little longer to cancel and paid for several months I didn’t use, because I was hoping to be able to come back sooner, but life had other plans for me & I didn’t have any qualms about supporting this awesome local gym. I’ve also personally met the owner and he’s one of the sweetest and most authentic people
I’ve had the pleasure to encounter, (especially for a gym environment, since I’ve felt uncomfortable and out of place at gyms in the past).

Fast forward to now, and I’m in a much better place physically, so of course I was stoked to be able to return to UAC! I was so excited to see how much they have expanded & even opened up a second location! I can’t think of a better deserving person to have such success. I’ve started working with one of their personal trainers and I’ve noticed that they have a very diverse and Queer collection of employees on their books, which is always a great sign in my opinion.

I was also pretty impressed to see they have a very neurodivergent friendly cardio room in their new space that doesn’t have super bright overhead lights! I think I’ll be spending a lot of time there, for sure. So happy to be back!

UAC has been a very pleasant gym. It has plenty of equipment, is always staffed by kind, helpful employees, and the clientele seem to be accepting of each other and stay out of one another's way. I've been working with Amber, who has been knowledgeable and patient.

If you’re looking for the absolute best gym in all of the Portland area, look no further. United Athletic Club is the best gym in the whole city and it is NOT close. best equipment, best owner, best environment.

Pricing is affordable and being able to find a pendulum squat, turf with sled, and dumbbells that go over 120 is extremely rare.

I have been to hundreds of gyms all over the country and despite no longer living in Portland, I still consider this my home gym. The owner is fantastic, kind and a wealth of knowledge and he has cultivated a wonderful, welcoming and CLEAN gym atmosphere that has literally no competition in Portland.

I provide 5 stars, as I am elated to see a Black owned, Queer friendly AND Local minded business in Sellwood. The multiplicity environment created, makes this 100 stars worth coming back to a place that provides peace, motivation and focus to improve and maintain health. The community is a charm and on fire!

Membership deal is affordable, if just using the equipment. As a individual who is used to yoga, pilates and zumba, and not the gym equipment, I was discouraged at first. With my budget, I was able to afford the base pay, which had not include training with the staff members.

Fortunately with the assistance of my friend who is comfortable with gym equipment, worked out with me as well as helped me understand how to use the different machines, which encouraged me to make the best use of my time, money and membership.

- Thank you UAC for showing how possible it is to be United. And thank you for playing awesome music and fun TV shows as well!

I am not much of a gym person- UAC had everything from barbells + squat racks, to free weights, to machines, to rowers, to bands and stretching areas. Always a positive vibe, I rarely found trouble finding what I went to the gym to do, I never saw people goofing off, nor going all extreme- really a positive environment with everything you need! Also the staff were always friendly and helpful, stop by and give UAC a try!

Everyone at United Athletic Club has been very welcoming and helpful. One of the first things we noticed was the nice open layout and how clean everything was. The staff is friendly and there are trainers available to help tailor a routine for you whether you’re a beginner or training for competition. We happy with our decision to join.

Lots of machine variety and affordable membership is a plus. But while they do have 2 deadlift platforms and some squat racks which is nice, they are unfortunately lacking accessibility to enough weight plates local to the areas. So for anyone who is a serious lifter, expect to drag plates from all over the gym and steal them off other machines to get your workout done. This isn't a dig on the gym itself, but just my warning to people who enjoy lifting heavy or training for any powerlifting may want to look into other gyms. There is also only one flat bench which is odd for a gym of this size. The potential for this gym to be great for all training types is there, as they just need more weighted plates for the racks and deadlift platforms.

(edit for response) yes there are a few 25kg bumper plates on one side of platform in first room and other side is an independent squat rack with standard weight plates up to 45lb from what I remember, so if someone is squatting there, you would be taking their plates. I also found myself needing to take plates from Smith machine next to the multi squat racks if squatting due to only a small mixture of bumper plates being placed in front of the racks.

There are lots of great things about this gym:

All the equipment I need, free weights and machines

Never empty and never overly crowded: and everyone is friendly and willing to spot.

A lot of gyms have that; what really stands out at UAC are the staff. The owner knows my name, the employees are always really friendly (hi, Steph!), and they keep the atmosphere better than anywhere I’ve gone before.

Now… if I could only break my bench press PB…

Edit- I did eventually break my bench PB... but it's about time I broke it again.

I have been a member at UAC for more than a year and a half. I had taken time off from lifting in a gym. I decided to get a trainer. Grace has been nothing short of a great coach. She keeps the workouts interesting by finding new exercises to incorporate into the workouts. I like that she creates and charts what I am doing so I can go back and look at how much stronger and more mobile I have gotten through getting back into lifting. I, also, just enjoy talking with her. The gym itself is a welcoming place and everyone is respectful as they move through their own workouts. Sean brings in new equipment that he believes will flow with everything else and it does.

I was not a gym person before I started at UAC a year and a half ago. But I love this community and the facilities are great. The gym has all the machines and equipment you can imagine, 4 squat racks, kettlebells, cardio, etc. and the owner Sean continues to invest and upgrade. I love that it’s a welcoming and clean environment and that you see all ages and all types of bodies here. Everyone is super respectful. I work with personal trainer Nabi and she is so organized and always has excellent workouts planned to help me get stronger and work on mobility. I highly recommend this gym, especially if you’re feeling shy about starting to work out - you’ll feel so at home.

I've lived in a few different states and have been to tons of gyms of all kinds. I've even coached and was a personal trainer at a couple. United Athletic Club is by far my favorite. I feel so welcome, the equipment is awesome and clean, and the trainers are so knowledgeable. There are a lot of gyms out there that I've felt like the vibe is off and nobody is approachable, but UAC is the opposite. I feel comfortable, and I think you'll notice it here because of how diverse the people are. It feels so welcoming to everyone.

plus, I've noticed that the people who hire the trainers here get into great shape fast. Like I've noticed the people who workout at the same time as me have their bodies and movement change over a few months and it's admirable.

So, if you're looking for a welcoming gym that will 100% support you, for sureee check out UAC.

edit - i've been going to UAC regularly for 3 years now. i will probably move to a different area eventually and this gym is one of the reasons I don't look forward to moving. I don't want to find another gym:/

If you’re searching for a gym that combines a welcoming community, no-nonsense approach to fitness, and excellent equipment, UAC is the place to be.

The community at UAC is what sets it apart. The gym truly feels embedded in the neighborhood. Sean, the owner, is a huge part of that. His Saturday morning boot camps are a highlight— offering versatile programming that’s accessible to all fitness and experience levels. Whether you’re just starting or a seasoned athlete, Sean creates an environment that’s equal parts challenging and fun.

I also want to give a special shout-out to my personal trainer, Lauren. Her attention to detail is unmatched—she focuses on form and building a solid foundation, ensuring every movement is done correctly and safely. Lauren’s ability to tailor workouts to individual goals and needs has been a game-changer for me, especially as someone new to weight training.

UAC strikes the perfect balance between being a serious gym and a supportive community hub. If you want a clean, well-equipped space with incredible programming and a strong sense of camaraderie, UAC is the gym for you.

When I moved to PDX from socal I wanted to find a local gym with knowledgeable and approachable staff which wasn't always crowded and didn't treat me like a number like other national gyms. UAC continues to exceed my expectations.

The staff. Each knows their specialty and is willing to help you however they can. Want to push yourself? Tell them and they will. Want to learn form? They got you. What I'm saying is they listen instead of waiting to speak.

The gym. It's got a great variety of machines, free weights, all types of cardio options (treadmills, ellipticals, ropes, balls, etc)and all the gear is clean and in good shape. UAC has lots of open space for various exercises and an area perfect for stretching or yoga. Bathrooms are always clean and it's clear the staff have a sense of pride in running a tight ship.

Availability. I've never had to wait to use a machine bc there are multiple, never had to wait for a bench, nor cardio. I don't like waiting and I don't have to at UAC. Yes, influx of ppl in the AM but nothing like other gyms.

This gym, UAC, with help from its staff, has gotten me into shape.

Stay away from this place. The owner purposefully puts a 3-month minimum in the contract with no verbal explanation of this when signing up. There are other reviews stating similar issues with the owner claiming they didn’t give proper notice before cancelling. Then he hides behind the rules he created as if they’re law and has the audacity to say things like, “ I wish I could do more for you”. Uh, dude you make the rules of your business and you can do whatever you want, don’t pretend this isn’t your choice. As a business owner myself I would never treat my customers like this. As explanation for his employee not verbally stating the 3-month minimum, he says “we’re human” as if that excuses this blatant money grubbing technique. If you claim to be human, act like one and treat people like humans. I told the person I signed up with that it would be just for the month and she never mentioned anything about a 3-month minimum. I accept that I realistically should have read the contract, but I guess I’m just too trusting that other small local businesses will do the right thing.

If you need additional reasons: the gym is dirty, the equipment is old - lots of it is rusty, and the floor is lumpy and uneven.

Disrespectful management who refuse to take accountability for their mistakes. I signed the three month contract and was happy to support a local gym, even if their facilities/hours were limited. When I canceled (with what I thought was 30 days notice), they sent a confirmation that my membership would end the next month and that I would not be charged past May. A month later, when I checked my bank account, I had been charged for June. I assumed this was a mistake with the auto-renewal, and emailed management to ask about the charge. Instead, management explained that THEY had made a mistake and told me the wrong dates MULTIPLE TIMES (they listed the dates as 5/12 and 5/13, and asked if I needed one more month’s renewal to work out for the rest of May) and because I sent notice with less than 30 days, they refused to refund me. Here’s the thing- if it had only been my mistake, I would have taken responsibility for the additional charge, even though it wasn’t something I could easily afford. But this wasn’t just my mistake- THEY sent me a clear confirmation that I would NOT be charged. Obviously they don’t understand or care that $45 is not meaningless change to their clients- I am a recent graduate who was preparing for a cross country move at the time. This was especially frustrating since I was only three days late on the cancellation deadline, which I could only find out by checking my bank account for the date of the first monthly charge (there was no warning given or membership portal available). What’s more, I am sick of small businesses using their size as an excuse for bad behavior. I frankly care more about being able to eat than I do about United Athletic’s ability to buy a swankier treadmill. Overall, not worth it, especially with their ridiculous membership model and lack of clear communication. Photos of this exchange are linked.

I've been a member for roughly a month now and have had an overwhelmingly positive experience. My friend and I left our old powerlifting gym at the same time and were looking for something that fit our fitness goals while still providing a community-like feeling. It was a tough bill to fit.

This gym provides the equipment of a big box gym with the size and community of a small local gym. I love going in and seeing the same faces week after week. The quality of the equipment is really excellent, great for a brutal leg day or a comprehensive upper body workout. They also have equipment for powerlifting, which is a need for me.

But mostly I've been very impressed with the ownership and staff. After being a member for a couple weeks, the woman working front desk asked me how I was enjoying the gym. I told her it was great but I wished there were more benches available for the power racks.

The next time I came in, they found another bench and put it by the racks. Like, how amazing is that?

Add in the price, especially with the summer special, and I'm just really thankful to have been introduced to this place by my friend. Couldn't recommend it more.

But despite its seriously good selection of equipment, it also welcomes a whole range of community members at all stages of their fitness journeys, from people starting out to long-time fitness junkies and lifters. I’ve never seen experienced another gym that made all levels and people feel so welcome. The community is also awesome. The Saturday class is always the highlight of my week. I highly recommend this gym for anyone looking for a positive and welcoming community, whatever their fitness level and experience.

Large space, wide range of machines and equipment, great dumb bell selection and none of them are missing, the cleanest gym I’ve been a member of, with spray bottles and cleaning towels within like 20 feet of you wherever you are in the gym. And a great price.

The only negative I can think of is during the spring the air was a little woody/musty inside - im guessing from the big wooden roof gathering moisture over the last 6 months and the doors/windows being shut for as long - but it wasnt a major bother to me.

I joined UAC during the pandemic when I was 62 years old. I left a downtown Portland, expensive private club for a location closer to work and with a focus on fitness, a variety of equipment and a skilled team of trainers. I found it with UAC. Sean, the owner, weathered the pandemic by building a quality and customer focus business. I've had boxing training and total body fitness training with members of his team. Fast forward 3 years and I am still at it and feel better than I did 10 years ago. this is a great gym, excellent help and plenty of options for every age and fitness goal.

I really enjoyed my time while at this gym.

Pros - never have to wait. very nice place to workout during the summer. 5 squat racks. 2 olympic lifting platforms. supporting a small business.

Cons - it can be very cold during the winter. limited parking in front which employees also use to even less space. street parking majority of the time.

By far the best gym I've been to in Portland. UAC has options for everybody and is particularly great for lifters looking for plenty of racks and lots of equipment that you don't find in normal big box locations. I rarely have to wait for anything and the members and staff are friendly and unpretentious. A 10/10 neighborhood gym for people looking for a good workout with a good crowd.

Changed my life. I've tried to get motivated to take care of my body before but it never took before I joined UAC. Since I signed up in September, I've gotten to the point where if I don't get to go to the gym for a few days I find myself missing it. I'm in better shape, I have more energy and most importantly I feel better about myself and my life. Outstanding local gym. There's an excellent array of lifting equipment (multiple benches, platforms and squat racks) as well as machines, cardio machines and an area for cross-fit style workouts. The equipment is all well maintained and clean.

As others have said, the gym has a welcoming vibe for all sorts of people working out. There's usually a number of people around, without it being packed or needing to wait for equipment. The customer service here is lacking, and the facility is pretty basic. I was talked into getting a month to month membership. I was informed that the gym needed a full 30 days cancellation notice. Then, a week later, I gave them written notice that I wanted to cancel my membership because I found a better gym. A gym representative, Stephanie, then informed me that I would be charged nonetheless for the following month because I didn’t give them at least 30 days notice and suggested they needed the funds to pay employees and maintain the facility. Beware that if you join and decide to cancel, do so a full 30 days in advance of the billing cycle lest you be charged for a whole month you have no intention of using.

Easily my favorite gym of the last decade and that's saying something given how much I've moved around. I consider UAC fully equipped, clean, and professional. You don't pay for frills that you'll never use. UAC knows what it's about. And the gym atmosphere has been great. Clientele have been respectful, focused, conscientious, and cleanly. I have yet to run into anyone that continuously slams their weights, hogs multiple machines without sharing, or eats up space taking photos/videos of themselves at the expense of others. Refreshing! Big fan of UAC.

High-quality equipment, friendly vibe and clean space.
