Tracey's yin class is better than therapy

I can not say enough good things about Yoga Refuge. Tracy's yin yoga class is always a highlight of my week. All of the teachers are wonderful but Tracy's class is especially nurturing and grounding. I also love the gentle yoga offerings. I've also really loved attending their special events, such as the sound baths with yin or restorative yoga. The space is so beautiful and calming and I always try to grab a spot right by the windows and plants! If you are thinking of trying Yoga Refuge, don't hesitate, you won't regret it! Come fill up your cup!

Yoga Refuge is such a gem! Every class I’ve taken is deeply therapeutic and offers just what I needed (often what I didn’t even know I needed). I feel so lucky to have this yoga studio in my neighborhood and am grateful for the community that’s fostered in the space.

Ive been back in Portland 10 years now and tried many yoga studios around the city and this one rocks! Lots of props and knowledgeable teachers and the community here is an actual vibe with nothing but love. I randomly tried a class at Yoga Refuge last October because it is close to where I live in Montavilla and have been going back several times a week ever since. With many teachers of varying backgrounds and different class types to choose from, plus a room full of props for support and modification, this inclusive studio has something to offer every body of any level/ experience (except bodies that can not climb a flight of stairs, the only drawback to this beautiful, wood-floored, plant-filled space -- although there are also a few on-line options). From heat-generating hatha flow to down-regulating yin to yoga nidra, I have yet to find a class or teacher I don’t like (though I do have my favorites). The Yoga Refuge has become an important part of my grounding, growth, healing, and community as a human being in modern times. If you’re interested in yoga, you should check them out!

I absolutely love this studio. I have been coming for several years now and at first I only did the Sunday class. When I started we were was coming out of that initial Covid time and I still did some yoga through an online program. I completed a 2 year teacher training in Anusara yoga 20 years ago and though I never consistently taught, I am pretty picky about being taught yoga. I finally committed to coming to Yoga Refuge regularly and trying other classes and I’m so happy I did! There are some amazing teachers and I think enough different styles to fit everyone. And it actually is affordable yoga! I’m so glad this is in my neighborhood and it doesn’t hurt that I work across the street, but I have been to many yoga studios over the past 20 plus years and this is my official fave. What a gem!

My experience at Yoga Refuge has proven wonderful!!! All of my instructors and subs are masterful practitioners, my body has benefited in every way, and the community at the studio is friendly, supportive, and caring. The studio space and abundance of a wide variety of props is also much appreciated. I feel so fortunate to be a part of Yoga Refuge!!!

Welcoming and casual community. Teachers are caring and support you in doing what feels right for your body. The studio provides lots of different props you can choose from to make sure you’re comfortable and supported during class, even lavender filled eye pillows! I love that there are so many live plants, windows (you’re on the second floor so no one can see in), and no mirrors. There’s also always a tea kettle and tea bags and filtered water jug, and drinks for purchase.

Thank you Yoga Refuge for being a grounding sanctuary in my life!
Danielle, the studio owner creates a spacious, welcoming and inclusive environment.
There are many styles to choose from, and all the teachers I've experienced are skilled and caring.
The incredible sound baths with Laura are also a must!
I also appreciate that I can access certain classes online and they are recorded so I can fit into my schedule.

I love this studio! I've been a member for half a year now and loved every class I've been to. I just wish they offered 6 am classes-I would go every morning before work if they had classes that early.

I have been going to Yoga Refuge for about a year. The studio space is clean, welcoming, and pleasant. I have taken classes primarily with two of the instructors and a few subs, but every experience I have had has been incredibly positive.

I have especially enjoyed the prenatal and post-natal classes taught by Jenna. Jenna is kind, welcoming, and fosters an amazing community-building atmosphere. She tailors each class to the needs of the students, and provides a good balance between challenge and restoration.

I am grateful to take classes here and recommend the studio to people of all levels of practice.

Updated 4/16/2024: This is still my favorite Yoga Studio. The orig.review highlighted cost as somewhat prohibitive for me, but things have changed and I've joined with a monthly membership that is well priced --esp. relative to how expensive EVERYTHING is these days-- and you can't really put a price on self-care!
The space itself is beautiful and welcoming. There are a lot of classes on offer, and each one I've attended seems quite suitable for all levels of practice. I like the variety of instructors, each one with their own style. The studio is well stocked with props and assists, and the mats are available for rent.

I moved to Portland recently and needed a new studio to continue my 6 year practice. I'm in my 50's with a motorcycle injury, so I needed a practice that was patient and acknowledge my injuries. Yoga Refuge has great classes for me. No pressures at this studio. Try Yoga Refuge. They are really good.

The name truly fits what Yoga Refuge offers: a place of acceptance, comfort and refuge from the noise and sharpness of modern living. I have attended classes with almost every instructor and have enjoyed them all and love Danielle, Kat, Melanie, Jenna, Birdie, Richelle, Claudia, Amanda J and Amanda S. They offer a wide range of styles but they are all welcoming, skilled and wonderfully unique. I’m so thankful to have found this yoga home after trying so many other studios. This is a special studio that truly makes yoga accessible and inviting to all regardless of experience level.

I have had the new student unlimited pass for the last month. I will definitely be continuing on an unlimited basis. This studio is wonderful. There are lots of varieties of yoga. The teachers are welcoming and thoughtful. The students are devoted. I kept seeing the same people every class I took. A real community feel. The students are very diverse - all ages, races, sizes, abilities. The teachers make it very accessible for every level and it is clear how much everyone values this community. I’m so grateful to have joined it! Oh - there are plants all over the studio and tons of natural light. It feels so restorative!!!

Yoga Refuge serves as the most accessible studio to those of us living in invisible Portland (east of 205) and attracts a committed and adventurous crowd of practitioners. I have practiced here for over a year now. The people and the space provide me with not just a great whole body exercise but foster a community that truly live their practice. I have had remarkable experiences with every instructor and feel like they all show up fully prepared while acknowledging what their own limitations are - in the moment or in general - and extend that recognition to the students.

It’s so good to have Yoga Refuge in Montavilla. The instructors are warm, welcoming, knowledgeable, clear and compassionate. I have taken classes with three different instructors and each have been great. All poses can be modified; they want you to feel comfortable and to attend to your needs, and those who want to reach further are likewise encouraged. I wish I could attend a class daily! Prices are affordable and they have great packages for folks new to the studio. If you’re a Montavillain you’re in luck for all yoga needs!

I've really enjoyed Yoga Refuge so far! It's the first yoga studio I've gone to where I don't feel judged. The classes are great for every level whether it's your first class or you've been doing yoga for years! I prefer Vinyasa and Eliana mostly teaches that class...and SHE IS AMAZING! I get sad on Mondays and Tuesdays and Fridays when that class isn't offered--but it is forcing me to try different styles, so it's a win-win :) Also the founder, Holly, reaches out to new students and offers them a free 30 minute yoga intentions setting appointment...that's an amazing offer. I feel at home here.

I am new to Portland in the second half of 2019. This is my favorite yoga studio in southeast Portland - and I have tried a handful. The reason - the instructors here create a strong sense of community and caring. I can practice yoga anywhere - but what I need, in addition, is a welcoming, compassionate practice - and that is exactly what I am finding here. Because I travel so much, I haven't had a chance to appreciate too many of the instructors but have especially enjoyed Jennifer's Sunday morning Gentle Yoga, Sasha's Hatha classes and Restorative Yoga with Andrea. Happy practices, yogis!!!

First timer to Yoga Refuge, the website, registration process and greeting (upon registering) was nice. The registration process via the website, viewing schedules and choices was pleasant and easy. There are happy hour classes offering a scale of prices, others are $15 which is very fair for the experience. It is my sense that these people really care.
Upon arrival, you will find reasonably easy parking across from Academy Theater. You go up a long flight of maple steps to a narrow landing and friendly waiting area. Main room is lofty and in pleasant warm colors and the ceiling is a straw yellow which complement the maple floors that creak while you move around. I loved this space, it made for a great experience.

Stunning atmosphere and experienced teachers. The childcare offerings are so incredible, the Little Lotus Learning Center is so sweet.

I forgot to read the website's policies, make sure you reserve your class/childcare sign-up in advance, to ensure the childcare is available.

We almost walked away, but another mama arrived with her son, and generously offered to provide childcare so that my friend and I could attend yoga. To a mama with a full-time job and no space for yoga, it was a gift beyond measure.

This is the type of community that the Yoga Refuge cultivates. The environment glows with healthy green plants reaching for the ceiling. The second-story space is full of light, and removed from the bustle of the Montavilla strip.

Saravati Hewitt's class brought me back to my Ashtanga origins with a fun, challenging flow.
