Muay Thai can feel intimidating at first, but once you get into it and learn the basics, everything becomes a lot easier. The coaches guide you every step of the way, push you in the right direction, and make sure you’re improving safely and confidently.

Incomparable! Seriously look no further. I am having such a good time and learning little by little. All of the coaches are competent, with real life experience under their belt! They are very patient and explain every step thoroughly. It can be intimidating, but as their credo states "walk towards fear". Thank you VIII Limbs, you all rock!

As I approach the final day of my free trial, I want to express my appreciation for the exceptional experience at this gym. The staff has been consistently kind, and the coaches demonstrate a high level of skill and attentiveness. Despite the number of individuals training, each coach ensures personalized guidance by providing tailored pointers on areas for improvement and proper techniques. The training environment is also highly respectful, with everyone focused on learning and enjoying the process. 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

8 Limbs Academy is a West Philly institution. It is an exceptional gym that offers a structured program suitable for all levels. The owners and Coaches, Charlie and Kate, have cultivated a welcoming, inclusive environment and diverse community where everyone—from beginners to seasoned fighters — have a place. And they are assisted by an able and committed team of coaches. The sessions are rigorous, as challenging as you want them to be, and always enjoyable. Coach Kate and Charlie have succeeded in establishing a serious but also very friendly gym, and everyone here is very respectful and considerate of each other.

I’ve been at 8limbs for over two years! I’ve been meaning to write a review for a while but it’s been hard to find the right words. Not only has 8limbs helped me become stronger physically and mentally, but it has helped me find community. This family is led and cultivated by coaches that love what they do and care about the overall growth of anyone who walks through the door. I started out with zero martial arts/combat sports experience! Needless to say, great place, great people, great vibes!! I recommend it to all my friends!

I started here 6 months ago as my second gym since starting muay thai. It was because I had to move so I was really nervous coming here since itd be all new and I really loved my old gym. I was not disappointed at all, this gym is pretty welcoming, and the workouts feel rewarding. I really feel like I'm being pushed (but not overworked) both mentally and physically. 8 limbs has renewed my enjoyment for the sport as well, as I feel like workouts are rarely repeated things dont get boring.

I already heavily recommend this gym to people ik irl, so if you want a fun way to move your body or to level up in your martial arts training I'd say to come here for sure

I started my journey of Muay Thai here. I was here back in 2021 (during pandemic lol) and i still implement the skills and mindset learned here anywhere I train. The coaches (owners) are what I truly remember and there compassion for the art and their students, truly a welcoming experience from what I remember.

I'm really late on this. Im now at my 2 month mark here at 8 Limbs.
1st off the first week is only $40 and they provide you with a brand new pair of gloves🔥. Now when I went to day 1 I came in knowing nothing. Never attended any kind of combat gym. I mean you I wish I had on video how bad my punches and kicks were. And not once did I feel singled out or any shade my way. In fact everyone was so supportive and patient. I was holding pads (horribly) for people that have been working for years so not only were the coaches helpful but the group of fighters have to be some of the most humble talented people I've met as a whole.

They not only have active fighters but they have belt holders. Champions. And when pitted against other gyms you can tell the difference.

So like I said I'm only two months in and my progress is astonishing to me. I know I couldn't have found a better place to start my Muay Thia journey.

Oh and they have a great strength and conditioning program where the focus isn't crushing PRs or ego lifting. Rather it's focused on muscles and movements that you don't often worked on. Knees, hips, shoulders, feet. The things that will keep you moving as you get older.

And it's all at your own pace. The calorie burn is real too so no matter where you are in your fitness or fighting journey they have something for you and will definitely work with to get in better shape.

The art of 8 Limbs ❤️

8 Limbs Gym is honestly the best gym I’ve ever been to. I’ve paid for many memberships in my life and I really think this one may be it. I started off thinking i wanted to do Muay Thai, but by me just getting back into the gym it wasn’t the right fit yet, so I joined their Strength and Conditioning program. Coach Kate is wonderful with explanation and direction. You don’t feel the pressure like in other group settings, it feels like a team working together. I’ve gained some weight over the years (couldn’t find a gym that I really liked) and I was able to keep up and not feel like death was knocking on the door lol, but there are always opportunities to level up the challenge. 8 Limbs works for me because of the location (West Philly), the coach and the program. I couldn’t ask for more.

SO FUN! It’s like playing video games with your own body. Signup was easy & everyone is so nice, especially the coaches who beautifully balance the line of being both intimidating & approachable. They answer questions patiently & break techniques down and explain them easily, and have you doing cool stuff on day one. You even get a sweet pair of gloves and I’m all about style points so they win there too 👍🏼

I never do cardio so I was worried I’d get exhausted quickly and wouldn’t be able to keep up but it’s literally so much fun that you hardly notice you’re getting tired until class is over, youre drenched in sweat and accidentally burned an average of 700 calories in about an hour (according to both my whoop band). It’s so crazy treadmills exist when you can do this, 10/10 can’t wait to do it again.

I am so grateful to Coach Kate and the other wonderful coaches for their commitment to ongoing learning and intentionality around building such a dynamic, functional, and fun program for us all! The music is great too ;)

Went to 8 Limbs for the strength training and ended up doing both the Muay Thai and Strength and Conditioning programs. The Strength and Conditioning program has helped me work on my core and my overall mobility, which has greatly alleviated my chronic lower back pain. The coaches are so knowledgeable and supportive. Come check it out!

The 8 limbs strength program is incredibly special! The coaches are amazing, the community is welcoming and supportive, and the curriculum and equipment are cutting edge! Coach Kate is constantly learning and brings her passion for new techniques and methodologies to every class. She leads by example and cultivates a safe space for failures and successes. I cannot recommend this program more sincerely!!!

An amazing space to train with a phenomenal community. I've done Mauy Thai with them in the past and am currently (when I can) part of their Strength program.

So, here is my review of the program: These Coaches approach the program with the skill of mindful educators who know the science and mechanics of the body and that everybody (and every body) is different, but welcome and belong in this space. They are incredibly responsive to any need or desire for modification, and even in my inner self conscious moments, have never felt judged for asking or a reminder on correct form.

This for sure is not some program where a coach reads someone else's exercise blog and throws out whatever circuit of the day they like. There is a clear program and progression to the workouts and what you learn from them. There is a focus on mobility and clear curriculum with coaches who are engaged, knowledgeable, and constantly putting in their own WORK to improve program and people within it.

I think as well, you can tell a lot about a program like this by the members of the program. They are some of the best most welcoming, empathetic, and inclusive folks around.

If you are building or rebuilding strength, know everything or nothing about movement, want to learn the thing or just show up and work on your strong, these folks and this program for sure have created a space where you belong.

UPDATED to add that the Strength program at 8 Limbs is incredible! The coaches are knowledgeable about strength training, give great feedback and modifications, and provide details about the whats and the whys we do certain movements. It's a lot of fun to progress in weight and in technique with such a supportive environment. Good tunes, good vibes, good community all around!

8 Limbs is a very open and welcoming martial arts gym! Prior to my intro class, I had never taken a martial art, and was a bit unsure if I would like it. As a beginner, the coaches were encouraging and very clear in their instruction. I immediately wanted to continue taking classes, as the challenge of muay thai is fun and has built a new sense of confidence in myself. The other students in the gym are great - very supportive of all levels of skill. This is not just a martial arts gym - it really is an amazing community. So happy to have this in West Philly!

"You don't come here to sort of do it; you come here to do it." The coaches taught me skills and patience not only in muay thai but also with people i.e. my training partners. I progressed very fast, thanks to their well designed curriculum. Sad to move away but I will miss this community for a long time. Highly, highly recommended.

Definitely an unwelcoming and uncomfortable experience as a first timer walking in. Just moved to the University city area and was really excited about this place based on the reviews and close location. Went in for the first time and the owner seemed bothered and agitated when I was asking him simple questions and he actually walked away when I was in the middle of a sentence. Very awkward, and the assistant at the front desk says “well he is about to teach a class.” His attitude was condescending and his overall demeanor and ego left a bad taste in my mouth. Huge turn off for me. I’ve been training for 2 years and have visited several boxing and Muy Thai gyms and I have never felt unwelcomed and treated like that. Not cool. I’ll pass.

Located in University City VIII Limbs is a warm and inclusive Muay Thai gym that offers boxing, kettlebell training, and of course Muay Thai. They offer a quick start program that is cheap and a great way to dip your feet into the sport. A shirt and gloves comes with the two week package.

The owners, Charlie and Kate, are experienced coaches and both have fought before. Charlie has a really vibrant personality and always has a smile on his face. Kate is a bit more of a drill sergeant so there is a good balance between the two.

Assistant Coach Mary Bee is a great addition to the staff as well. She's fought several times in Thailand and is an active competitor in America. She has a real passion for teaching and has a wholesome demeanor making her very approachable. Mary teaches a weekly LGBT class which really helps the gym be inclusive.

The membership of the gym is quite large so if you're looking to make friends this is a great place to go to as well.

They have a large fight team as well for those of you looking to enter the ring. That of course isn't mandatory though. On the downside the fight team is pretty green but since the gym is only about 4 years old that is to be expected.

With reasonable prices, good coaching, and lots of people to work with VIII Limbs is a good spot for those of you looking to enter the world of Muay Thai.

I am in absolute LOVE with 8 Limbs. I have never felt so confident and powerful in my life. I participate in the Women's kickboxing class and being in such an amazing atmosphere of wonderful women is so encouraging! Coaches Kate and Charlie are very supportive and take the time to show instruction to the move sets of Muay Thai. This isn't a cardio class, it's a Martial Art and that's what I love the most about it! They set challenges every month so you can test your strength and see how much you've improved. I can't wait until I'm ready to try their foundations class which I've heard many great things about! #takebackyourlife!!!!!!!!!

No amount of stars can really rate this place, and yet this school is much more than just a place. At the heart of 8 Limbs Academy are great instructors and students alike who genuinely want you to learn the art of Muay Thai Kickboxing. The coaches have an uncanny ability to gauge each student's skill level and interest and have your growth as their top priority. No matter what skill level, age, shape or physical capability you grow along with everyone else. There's no intimidation: everyone enrolled in school comes from all walks of life and has something unique to offer to the overall community. This is the best place to achieve your fitness goals, meet new people and be a part of a greater community that's fast becoming the fighting soul of West Philadelphia.

I love 8 limbs academy, I never had any interest in joining a gym or pursuing martial arts because I thought it would be sexist and macho and horrible and I am lazy. 8 limbs has provided a safe space for queer and trans people and women to train, learn new skills, and get in epic shape. All of the coaches are really passionate and committed and really rub off on you--it's hard to stay away. I feel sad when I go on vacation because I'm losing mat time. I've never in my life pulled myself together after a long day to go to the gym, until I found Muay Thai, and I don't think I would have fallen in love with any other gym or any other group of coaches. No matter what level you are at, you feel like part of a team. You'll leave totally sweaty and sore and super proud of yourself and maybe having been punched in the face and psyched about it.

Also they play sweet tunes and are hilarious and sometimes there are hangouts with board games and you'll make a lot of friends.

I've been a member of 8 Limbs Academy since March 2015. I feel incredibly lucky to have found such an accessible, organized, and challenging gym. Headed up by the equally amazing Charlie Cottone and Kate Allen, this gym offers a range of classes from women's kickboxing to fighter training. Regardless of the track you choose, I can promise that you will be inspired to push yourself physically and mentally. The community that has developed around the gym is engaging and supportive--there's no tough-guy attitude, just friendly, stoked folks that are happy to be there. If you're considering trying Muay Thai or women's kickboxing, I highly recommend you check them out!

I love this gym! It's a rare gem among martial arts gyms- no drama, no meatheads. Just lots of challenging work and learning for Muay Thai players of all levels. Women and LGBT+ and trans people are made to feel particularly welcome, with an impressive pronoun option on the intake form. That sort of general acceptance makes a sweet little community for everyone- a little buffer from the outside world. So If you want to work your butt off and have a good time, this is the place for you.

Kate and Charlie have cultivated a super positive and welcoming muay thai community at 8 Limbs. They're both excellent coaches because they have a strong knowledge base, but even more importantly because they are personally invested in helping each student grow. VIII Limbs Academy is truly a unique experience - one that I have never experienced before in a Muay Thai gym. Kate and Charlie have built a special community of friendly people who are welcoming of all levels. I have previous Muay Thai experience but now prefer to just take the Women’s Kickboxing classes. The classes are intense - full of cardio and strength while still focusing on technique. Kate and Charlie focus on creating a positive environment while making you enjoy sweating a lot.

I can not recommend this gym highly enough. My wife and I started coming a couple months ago (she in the women's kickboxing class and I in the Muay Thai foundation class). Neither of us had any martial arts experience and we were not exactly doing much of anything to stay in shape (does dog walking count?). We first came to the gym with hopes of improving our self-care and to participate in a new and challenging discipline. We both signed up for the two week trial and were hooked almost immediately. Each class pushes you hard and the coaches offer top notch instruction. I especially appreciate their enthusiasm, humility, and ability to motivate. This gym is perfect for West Philly and there is a wonderful, diverse group of participants with varying ambitions about their training. Walking into a gym can be intimidating but this place is welcoming from the start. This is not your typical "meat head" gym. Participants push one another to improve in a supportive way and there is a strong sense of community when you are at the gym. The coaches emphasize the "art" of muay thai meaning you will learn appropriate technique and form in a safe and controlled environment. My initial concern, before joining, was the cost, but this place is worth budgeting for. I am now a happier and healthier person and I plan to train here as long as I am in the Philadelphia area. Definitely come check it out if you can.

Before joining 8 Limbs Academy, my martial arts experience was dropping out of Tai Chi, repeatedly, in college. Every semester, I thought it was a good idea and every semester something more pressing would come up.

I took the free introductory class thinking it might be neat to see what Muay Thai is and that maybe it would be a good cross-training option for my running. Between the explicitly welcoming language on the website and the genuinely welcoming coaches and fellow students, as well as the HARD workout, I was sold. I signed up for the two week trial and tried to get to as many classes as I could.

I love that there are women's only classes which are open to all who identify as women. I love that the people's Muay Thai (LGBTQAI +) has it's own time. I love that the coaches and students are so nice and hit so hard! I love that I have triceps now and that I can do 85 push ups (not in a row, sets of 25) and 4 pull-ups!

My original goal was just to do some solid cross-training for my running since weight lifting was getting stale. I started with the women's kickboxing classes since I didn't really want to hit people. Now I also go to the foundations classes. It's awesome! I can punch people! They can kick me! I'm still working on some basic things, like keeping my eyes open during sparring and not losing my balance when I teep.

This gym is great for folks who don't think they belong in a gym/think martial arts is great for other people. It's a hard work out with a really nice bunch of people. I've heard it's great for experienced fighters as well, but it's hard for me to judge that. ;)

Before 8 Limbs, I did 2 yrs muay thai and 3 yrs northern shaolin/sanda. From my perspective, the quality of training here is very high. The coaches are skilled, approachable and friendly, and have a wealth of fight experience. The curriculum is thoughtfully designed for students to progress safely from beginner to more advanced training, at their own pace. No matter what level you are, you can always expect a challenging and satisfying workout.

The community of folks here genuinely support one another to achieve their goals, whether that's to get in better shape, or to prepare to fight in competition. There's a noticeable lack of the macho dysfunctional BS you find in a lot of other gyms. It makes for a truly great place to train.

Muay Thai is for everyone! Whether you are an experienced fighter or have never done anything remotely like martial arts before, 8 Limbs Academy is the place to train.

Even though we all work out together, everyone works at their own skill level. People come for all reasons, some are serious fighters, some just want exercise or try something new, and others like me wanted to lose weight (and have!). There are students of all ages (the kids classes are amazing!) and come from all backgrounds and fitness levels.

All of the coaches are top notch. Each provides helpful instruction and encouragement. The coaches really push you to push yourself to work as hard as you can.

As an added bonus, the coaches are also the nicest people and have cultivated the greatest, most supportive community I have ever experienced.

Does anyone still say "the bee's knee's"? Because if they did it would be completely applicable here. Walking into one of the foundations class you quickly find all levels of training; running the gamut of very first class to amateur fighter. And impressively enough, the coaches make sure that we all come out of feeling worked.
