SIGN UP ASAP if you’re looking to improve your athleticism, discipline and health.
I ditched only focusing on powerlifting to improve my health and mobility. I now feel explosive, dynamic as an athlete and comfortable with the idea of self defense situations.
I came across the gym on a walk in the neighborhood and had a great first impression of the facilities and coaches. Clean, friendly, professional vibes and well maintained facility. After chatting with coach Derek, I took home a handout with information and looked into all of the details before scheduling my intro program.
I’ve been now going to this gym for 5 weeks and I’m hooked. The vibes are great, there’s a wonderful balance between community, fun and serious training, and the facilities and coaches are incredible. Shout out to coach Derek for building something special in the fishtown / east Kensington community. If you’re someone who is thinking about checking it out, definitely do it and get ready for a big positive change in your life.

Coach Derek has set up a great community here. He and the coaches really take the time and attention to ensure proper technique while guiding you through a serious work out. This isn’t the type of place that just throws you into the ring and makes you figure it out on your own, but instead coaches the right skills and discipline.

***Updating review for the EDS/HJS community- Burning Spirits is a good gym to train at if your hyper-mobile. Thats all :)
BS and all the coaches are great. As a person with IBS Muay Thai is something that really can take a toll in my system because high intensity training often makes ibs symptoms worse. I can feel really sensitive in group classes but I’ve never felt bad or like I didn’t belong at BS. I’ve been going for about a year now and it’s become such an important place of community for me, it helps me feel strong, regulated and I’ve made so many friends! Burning spirits is the kind of place that’s going to ask that when you show up you do your best, but that doesn’t always mean your the hardest hitter- it means your showing up and trying, supporting your fellow fighters and communicating your needs to your partner and coach. Idk if I’ll ever get in the ring due to personal physical constraints, but if I do I’ll be excited to represent Burning Spirits.

Great experience so far, Coach Derek takes his time with new students learning the fundamentals and helping us learn and grow. Seeing the all level class at the same time as the fundamentals class is added motivation.
The gym is clean and well kept, everyone is respectful and nice. Def recommend!

When I first joined, I had a beginner-friendly introduction to Muay Thai in which I was taught basic strikes and their techniques. I got a flavor of cardio-work, shadowboxing, bagwork, and even the common Mai gesture used as a sign of respect and thanks between the coaches and students. All of this showed me that Muay Thai is more than just a sport--but a way for people to respect one another and work alongside each other to achieve a better, stronger body! If you live here in Philadelphia and want to grow like never before in a welcoming and accepting culture, Muay Thai is a great start, and even better, the Burning Spirits Muay Thai gym. Coach Allie and Coach Derek are great teachers with great patience and dedication for their students and the gym. Not to mention, the newer coach, who also has experience in the ring and a good understanding of technique--Coach Joe! Thanks, guys!

I had a great experience at Burning Spirits Muay Thai! The gym has an amazing vibe—clean, welcoming, and full of positive energy. What really stood out to me was the traditional Muay Thai feel of the training. Derek, the owner, brings authentic experience from Thailand, and it shows in the way he teaches and runs the gym. He’s incredibly knowledgeable, passionate, and made me feel right at home. Whether you’re a beginner or have experience, this is a great place to train. I’m definitely coming back! Highly recommend.

Burning spirit is an incredible experience. It’s a great mix of an authentic training experience while also feeling really welcoming. I had really limited knowledge about Muay Thai, just general interest in combat sports. Burning spirits was able to teach me so much and was the perfect way to work out while still having fun. Derek and all the other coaches did a great job pushing and keeping me motivated. I’d absolutely recommend anyone to at least do the trial program to get a feel for how sick it is!

I’ve been training at Burning Spirits since the summer of 2023. It’s been tremendously beneficial for my mental and physical health. Wonderful and welcoming environment. Kru Derek creates a healthy and supportive atmosphere for learning. plenty of experience in the gym from the top down so you can learn if your new. Or find a partner with advanced skills if you are already in the practice of Muay Thai.
I was nervous that the gym would be filled with MMA bros. I could have not been more wrong. The experience I have had is one of respect, learning, and commitment.

I've been training at Burning Spirits for just over two years now. It's been one of the best decisions I've ever made regarding my mental and physical health.

I've been with Burning Spirits for about 3 months and this place has a lot of green flags:
1. The gym culture is the best of any gym I've trained at. Head Coach Derek demonstrates his concern for the safety of his students. Sparring is fast but controlled and light, authentic Thai style.
2. Derek as well as the junior coaches give excellent instruction. I've trained at other gyms that advertise themselves as Muay Thai but the only techniques we learn are punches and kicks. In my *first* session, Coach Carrie taught me how to throw a knee.
3. Burning Spirits takes authenticity seriously. Derek has been training for multiple decades and brings students on a yearly trip to Pattaya, Thailand.
4. The vibe of the gym is very welcoming. In previous gyms it felt like a revolving door of anonymous faces that I train with once and then never see again. The folks at Burning Spirits are friendly, accepting and *leave their egos at the door*. Before coming to Burning Spirits, I didn't know a gym like this existed.

I've been training muay thai pretty consistently over the last decade. I met coach Derek initially at another gym 8 years ago. I was immediately drawn to his style. He makes muay thai look beautiful, as it should. His techniques and style are unique to this area and very technical. When I visit other gyms and spar with various ufc vets and other pro fighters from the area they sometimes even recognize the training and ask me where and who I've trained with previously. When I tell them they usually go "I recognized some of the style. How is he doing?" Derek has been around a long time and has worked with and cornered some of the best fighters in the area. His gym is immaculate, well laid out, and has the nicest ring in philadelphia as far as I've seen. He asks a lot of his fighters, but if you are ready to make the commitment and do the roadwork he will turn you into a dangerous Nak muay.

I enjoy burning spirits entirely too much. This has been by far the best feeling I’ve had in a very long time. I decided to take my fitness seriously while simultaneously picking up a new life skill (the art of muay thai) & both adventures have been successful thus far. I am absolutely learning so much and slowly but surely mastering the martial art all while shedding off weight and feeling better about my body. Leaving class everyday I feel energetic and better then when I walked in. Every body at the gym from members to coaches are very friendly and welcoming. As a newbie, I don’t feel pressure to be a pro. They allow me to work at my pace & make mistakes all while teaching me how to improve at the same time. It feels like a safe space. I highly recommend this gym.

There's no belt ranking system in muay thai. Nobody looks like an athlete and everybody is always injured, including and especially the coaches. One of the fighters just went into a fight with a broken ankle.
It's not woman-owned. The owner, who isn't a woman, likes yelling at women too much. There's a cringe-inducing lack of emotional self-regulation and a lot of blameshifting in the form of lengthy e-mail blasts.
Most of what I learned in the class, I had to unlearn over the $2000 trip to Thailand -- the mother gym, Sidyodtong, offers the same trip for half the price. All I know about my missing thousand dollars is that it didn't go into nutrition, recovery, mobility, or exercise science training for the instructors.
It's a con. Steer clear.

My friend signed up for the membership here last week, and, very unfortunately, she got her ankle badly injured two days ago at a climbing gym. When asking to pause her membership at Burning Spirits Muay Thai because of this injury, she was rejected for lack of a 30-day notice. The staff also rejected her request to transfer the courses to her friends. So basically she is forced to pay $180 (yes the gym is also very overpriced) for the one one-hour class she took last week.
First of all, the un-negotiable 30-day notice rule is ridiculous because no one can predict an injury a month ahead, and this kind of injuries are not uncommon among sport-loving people.
Secondly, the staff are very rude and unsympathetic during the communications, saying things like “That’s not our fault that you broke your ankle. You’ll still be charged and we are already GRACIOUS with letting you off next month.” Also they have been inconsistent with their statement of the gym rules. Just two days ago I personally hear one of the staff promise that you can pause your membership for 2-3 months if needed. But after my friend’s injury she is told that she can only pause for 30 days— which is not even enough time for recovery from a bad ankle injury!
Thirdly, all this happened after she enthusiastically introduced her partner, me and two other of our friends to the gym and brought us for trial classes. She had signed up for membership, her partner was going to, and the rest three of us have been seriously considering joining in the near future, if not immediately. Obviously no one of us will do that any more, nor would any one else from our climbing community. I don’t think Burning Spirits deserves the commitment my friend put into them nor any of our trust.
All in all, I am very disappointed by the gym and seriously suspicious about their commitment to creating a welcoming environment.
———————————————
It was not a false statement but probably a useful one. My friend got firm and unsympathetic rejections on the phone call with you guys about refund/ transfer/ pause. I am not sure whether it was her communication with her bank or this review helped to get this refund, but it was NOT your sympathy and understanding. Apparently you were sympathetic only to the degree that you would cut the 30-day notice to 28 days.
The trial classes didn’t come with the term that I have to sigh up for membership, I don’t know why you are trying to make me feel bad by bringing that up.
Professional expertise is not the ONLY thing that people look for when choosing their home gyms. I am not in the position to judge your expertise, but I would not recommend the gym to anyone except those who believe they will not ever get injured, and those who can afford throwing $150 away simply because of their bad luck.
———————————————
Changing this to 5 star to not cause unnecessary harm; but personally I would leave the comments here just for reference.

Fantastic gym and amazing coaches! A lot of open space and plenty of heavy bags to utilize. The coaches are extremely knowledgeable of the martial art and of the culture, and they do a great job of passing that knowledge down to their students.
There's a great curriculum in place that allows beginners to learn and practice a basic foundation each week (boxing, kicks, knees and elbows, defense, etc.). For more experienced students, advanced techniques are also taught in rotation. There are even dedicated classes for strength/conditioning, and heavy bags.

I couldn't agree more with other reviewers! Burning Spirits is such a great place to learn Muay Thai.
I feel lucky that my first martial art experience is sooo good. I've never done anything like this before and I see such an impressive result after doing it for 2 months. Big thanks to our coaches as they are always there to help!
Other awesome things about this place: super friendly community, only positive vibes, huge motivation boost and visible abs in a short time as a bonus 👊
PS: very appreciated that you keep the gym clean! Idk what aroma stuff you use but it always smells so good in there!

It's a wonder how far you will come at Burning Spirits. Coach Derek & his team do an excellent job meeting you where you are & guiding you through each technique. They are with you every step of the way as you master the basics and later progress into more advanced training.
Eight months ago, when I first started, I had 0 experience with Muay Thai. That feels like a lifetime ago because of how much I've learned. You'll get in great shape, learn to protect yourself, & gain confidence. Your money & time will be well spent here.

Burning Spirits is an incredible muay thai gym and community for students of all levels. I truly feel like I learn or improve on something in every class, and will continue to. I really appreciate that the coaches are attentive to students’ strengths & style, and that there is an emphasis on learning and appreciating some of the cultural traditions and history of muay thai too. Cannot recommend the gym highly enough, whether you’re a new student or more experienced— the environment is always welcoming & supportive, including in more challenging classes or sparring sessions. Very grateful to have found this place! For anyone who hasn’t tried muay thai or boxing before, give a few classes a try & you’ll probably fall in love with this sport!!

Burning Spirits Muay Thai is the gym experience I didn't know I needed. This gym boasts the ability to be a true neighborhood gym as well as a connection to a globally adored and ancient combat sport. Come here to learn the art of eight limbs, get fit, and make friends in the city. You can train at your own pace but once you start, you won't get enough. This gym offers an easy to understand rotating curriculum with classes of differing intensities and for people at different experience levels, so there's something for everyone at any part of their journey with Thai boxing.

I went to a women's self defense class here and it was awesome. Welcoming and friendly to beginners. Easy to get to if you're in the city, a block away from the Berks stop on the El. Very clean and respectful of Covid rules. Fun place to be. Learned a lot of useful moves. Inclusive environment. Good for people of all shapes, sizes and skill level. Would definitely go again. ❤

I've learned under and trained with Kru Derek and Kru Lisa at other gyms for the last few years and was stoked to find out that they were opening their own gym. They're great teachers with complimentary teaching and fighting styles and I learn a lot from them. I always feel comfortable, supported, and pushed.

This place is awesome! I have trained with both Kru Derek and Lisa in the past and have to say they are some of the best instructors I have ever had. Derek is super patient and technical, he literally teaches you from the ground up so that your balance is always ready. I had trained Muay thai for years before training with him and never realized how crucial this was. Lisa is also a fantastic teacher and has fought some of the biggest names in her weight class, and won. Both of them make a real effort to ensure everyone in the gym feels comfortable and welcome regardless of skill level. Would recommend to anyone wanting to learn true Muay Thai, especially how to technically dominate with sweeps, clinch, and proper elbows.

The best! I have trained with Kru Derek for several years and can't say enough good things. His enthusiasm for Muay Thai is infectious and is matched only by his deep expertise in all facets of the sport. He is encouraging to his students while also focusing on precise technique, striking a great balance between being both challenging and motivating. While a great all-around instructor, his knowledge of clinching and sweeping techniques is a real differentiator, as these often receive less attention in Western Muay Thai.
