I’ve been coming to Cedar Street for over 6 months now and am so glad I made the decision to invest in myself! As a working mom of 2 small kiddos, I lost sight of taking care of my physical health and paying attention to my body and what it needs for longevity. This place brought that all back for me. Coming here 3x a week feels like a gift. The trainers are patient, kind and attentive. The community is supportive, welcoming, and friendly. I am so much stronger, my mobility has greatly improved, my energy levels are way up, and I actually enjoy the time I spend moving my body. The workouts change every 6 weeks so nothing feels stale and I’m constantly learning new ways to move and strengthen. I‘ll be forever recommending CST to whoever complains about aches, pains, or general body dissatisfaction.

I wanted to start working out but had zero gym experience so I needed a gym that offered guidance on not just what to do, but how to do it. Nick and his team were very helpful and made me feel at ease right away with their small group classes. I have made a lot of progress since starting with them and look forward to continue working with Cedar Street in the future.

Wanted to wait a bit before I wrote a review. It's been about 4 months - I can say this was one of the best things I've done for myself by joining Cedar Street. I've had gym memberships throughout my life, but wasn't seriously taking care of myself or working out consistently.

I joined on a whim because of a friend and before I knew it I was coming in twice a week. But at first, it was hard. Old habits wanted to hold me back - it was always tempting to just not show up. Instead, I choose to go because after each class with Nick or Mitch, I was always glad I went.

Speaking of which, both Nick and Mitch are awesome trainers/ coaches. They are caring and patient (I've never felt like I couldn't ask for the 20th time how to do an exercise I literally did a week ago.) The small classes, which I greatly appreciate - allows them to give everyone personalized training and tailoring/ modifying the exercises to your level and what's best for you. If you have specific goals, they want to help you achieve it!

The environment is welcoming and motivating for all fitness levels, there are no egos here. I've never felt more stronger and happier in my body. Thank you to the CSPT Team for the encouragement and fun! And I can't wait to get even more calluses!

Ten months ago, the thought of willingly waking up for a crack-of-dawn personal training session was utterly foreign to me. Now? I genuinely look forward to my early morning workouts at Cedar Street - a complete departure from the dreaded 'obligation' going to the gym once represented for me.

The format of the small classes is a game-changer. They've cultivated the perfect blend of a relaxed, welcoming environment and the structure of an expertly led fitness class. And the coaches – Nick, Katelyn, and Mitch – are simply phenomenal. Their encouragement is infectious, their knowledge impressive, and their approachability makes all the difference. Receiving personalized guidance within a small group of individuals who are also working on their health and fitness goals has been super motivating and supportive.

Beyond the exceptional coaching, Cedar Street boasts a consistently clean, organized, and well-maintained facility. More importantly, the positive and supportive atmosphere they've fostered is truly electric. If you're searching for a personal training gym that offers expert instruction, individualized attention, and a strong sense of community, look no further than Cedar Street. It's been a truly transformative experience for me, and I wholeheartedly recommend it!

Update (2025): It's been 2 years since I wrote this review, and I'm still lifting at Cedar Street! If anything, it's become even more of a welcoming place for lifters at all levels. It's not just a gym, it's a community. So if you're looking for a place to get stronger, have fun, and meet some really awesome people, this is the gym for you.

Cedar Street is an amazing powerlifting gym with an incredible community. Nick and all of the other coaches are knowledgeable and encouraging. Whether you are interested in training for a competition or just getting stronger, this is the place for you. As a woman just getting back into lifting after a multi-year break, I was nervous about joining a lifting-focused gym, but the environment is nothing but supportive and welcoming. I would recommend without reservation to anyone!

This is my favorite gym in Philly. For almost three years now, even after moving away from the Fishtown/Kensington area, I still travel across town to work out here. The equipment is close to new and kept cleaner than any other gym I've been to in the city, not to mention everything is kept well-organized, and the variety of equipment satisfies virtually every exercise need, from resistance bands to barbell training to machines.

The group training here is particularly accessible to people of all levels of fitness and workout experience. Even as someone with years of powerlifting experience, I found Nick and the other coaches knowledgeable, friendly and approachable and I still learned a lot in group sessions with their help. I would recommend this gym to anyone, but especially to those who may be intimidated to start on their fitness journey and could benefit from guidance and feedback. Even parking here is easy! Highly recommended.

This gym has an incredible format and culture that truly sets it apart! The small personal training sessions are perfect for maintaining proper form during strength training, ensuring both safety and effectiveness. I love that the structured format keeps me accountable and motivated to show up and put in the work.

The trainers are not only knowledgeable but also genuinely invested in each member’s progress. They take the time to answer questions, provide modifications when needed, and emphasize correct form more than any other gym I’ve been to. Their attention to detail and commitment to safety make a huge difference in preventing injuries and maximizing results.

Another aspect I really appreciate is the balanced participation from both men and women, creating an inclusive and welcoming environment. The members are friendly and supportive, making it easy to feel comfortable, no matter your fitness level. If you’re looking for a gym that prioritizes quality training, accountability, and a strong sense of community, this is the place to be!

Great format and culture! The small personal training sessions are perfect for ensuring good form in strength training. The format holds me accountable to show up and get in my work outs. The trainers are knowledgeable and friendly. They are always willing to answer questions or suggest alternate workouts for me. They take safety and correct form more seriously than other gyms/trainers I’ve tried. I appreciate that the gym has similar participation from men and women, and the members are friendly and welcoming.

Pound for pound, in my opinion, the most welcoming community for personal fitness training in Philadelphia. Nick has brought his vision to life: a place where anyone can feel welcome, accepted, and more than capable of achieving beyond their fitness goals. It’s not the biggest place, but the design is highly functional with all the latest equipment. The staff is made of certified trainers who are knowledgeable, thoughtful, and charismatic. They prioritize safety, education, and what is right for your personal needs and objectives over tossing weights around (but if you’re into that, there’s space for you here too!)

I am forever grateful for choosing Cedar Street to get my fitness journey back on track. As a former athlete turned dad and office 9-5er, it filled a space for me that provides physical and mental benefits, and the discipline to stay on track with my personal fitness in a life with lots of competing priorities. I highly recommend it for any person that wants to join a community and find out what they are capable of!

Cedar Street is excellent. After an injury and me just neglecting my body they were there to help me get back into shape. The classes have a cap on participants which allows the phenomenal coaches to give pointers on form and explain the reason & methodology behind what they’re asking you to do. I’ve been going here for about three months and have lost over 30 pounds, whatever you are trying to achieve the coaches will go out of their way to help you reach those goals.

This place is awesome. It’s very welcoming environment and so educational. The trainers work with you and make you feel very comfortable. I was a beginner and they educated me on weight, band, and core training. This helped me with my body and mind. I came to CST with a very big goal, to run my first marathon. And they helped me achieve this goal! From strength training to yoga to motivation, they provided me with the perfect training plan for the weeks of running I had in store. My biggest concerns were building endurance and tackling hills---they helped me grow confidence around my runs so that I could do both. Couldn't have done this without them!

Cedar Street Personal Training is the place where back fat goes to die and muscles come to party. It's where you trade your Chick-fil-A sauce for resistance bands and your couch for a sweat session with Nick, the muscle maestro. The atmosphere? So electric, you'll think you're at a concert, not a gym. And the results? They sneak up on you like a ninja in the night, leaving you sore in places you didn't know existed. If you're looking to transform from a 'before' picture to an 'after' that will have everyone swiping right, Cedar Street is your fitness matchmaker.

When I joined Cedar St Training, I found I looked forward to my workouts. Nick and his team ensure that my technique is always correct, which you don't get when you are with corporate gyms, to avoid any injuries. They are reliable and punctual. This place has changed my life. Nick, the owner, is the absolute best of the best. He’s an incredibly knowledgeable, patient, kind, and caring trainer. The other two trainers are also wonderful. Everyone at this gym is welcoming and kind, like truly kind in a way that makes you feel like you belong there. No one cares what you look like, they just want you to get stronger and anyone will help you out if you need it. And don’t worry if you’ve never trained before or have been away from training for a while. The trainers will work with you at your individual level and adjust and adapt anything as necessary. I can’t recommend this place enough if you want a challenging but fun and community oriented place to work out and strength train.

Cedar Street is a great gym for everybody and caters to anyone regardless of skill level. There's 0 meathead vibe, and every person that steps through those doors is incredibly supportive. The coaches here are well versed in training anyone from someone who has never even lifted a barbell to those who have been competing for years. The community is incredibly welcoming to all people and is a very safe place for LGBTQIA+. I've been coming here for almost 3 years, and I feel incredibly confident in my body and what it is capable of after the skillset the coaches have given me.

Wow, where do I even start with Cedar Street? This place has been a game changer for me. When I first stepped in, my back was giving me grief every time I tried to do anything remotely physical. Walking, housework—you name it, it hurt.

But thanks to the awesome coaches, I'm practically a new person. They've got a keen eye for detail and really helped me get my form right. As the coaches say, "it's okay if you don't get things right the first time, there's no manual for learning how to use your body." Except there kinda is, because they teach you how, slowly but surely! I never knew learning how to use my body properly could make such a difference. Now? My back pain? Pretty much gone.

I also gotta mention the vibe here. It's not your typical gym scene where everyone's in their own little world. It's more like a hangout. Working out feels less like punishment and more like a social thing I actually enjoy.

In just a few weeks, I've gone from feeling weak and wobbly to feeling super excited about what my body is capable of. I'm lifting, I'm carrying, I'm doing all the things I never thought I could. Plus, I've picked up some cool insights about how my body works along the way.

Seriously, if you're even thinking about joining Cedar Street, stop thinking and just do it. It's one of those things you gotta experience for yourself to fully get how awesome it is.

This place is literally a game changer; it's the sole reason I have a better relationship with my body and fitness. Nick and his squad of trainers create such a welcoming, positive atmosphere that makes it hard to leave after every session. They're attentive and genuinely want to help you achieve your goals. Their programs take all the guess work out of what to do, but you can also work with them and create your own custom plan too. The small group sizes means you're never really waiting to use the equipment, and really helps in feeling like this gym is yours, rather than you being another number in some place like LA Fitness.

Decade of round the clock back pain gone after a month in CSB. No joke. Used to have to bend my knees and hold a wall every time a sneezed since I was 25 and I’m 37. Threw it out when I was 22 on a construction job and again every few years since. Constant slight dull pain and lack of mobility. Chiropractor couple times a year. Slowly got worse over the years until I realized I couldn’t pick up a sock without touching my knee. Thought I was just getting old. Turns out I needed to build strength. All gone. Can’t believe it.
Honestly I knew that building core strength and back strength would be a key part of getting over it but the fear of doing things wrong and causing problems always stopped me after a while. And of course actually hurting myself doing things wrong and then giving up. I thought of trying yoga instead. Saw CSB on Google in my neighborhood. First couple sessions in CSB when I realized the coaches especially obviously nick have a real knowledge base I had the confidence to continue and before I knew it I forgot I used to hurt so much. THATS MY STORY.

Cedar Street is a really special place. So special that I drive 1 hour round trip twice a week just to work out there! And it's completely worth it. A few things stand out to me about CSB, which I'll list below:

1. The Trainers: Nick and his team are truly exceptional (shoutout Shay, Kaitlyn and Bert!!!! Thee best!!). They are supportive, encouraging and relentlessly positive. And they really know their stuff. Their focus on proper form and technique, and ensuring that you feel 100% confident in the movement before progressing has been so helpful in not only growing my confidence, but also in helping me make tangible progress without injury (which I don't think you'll find at some of those crossfit boxes, ahem). They also really listen to you, and make insightful and supportive adjustments to help you get the most out of your workout.

2. The Program Design: Beyond the handy apps and calculators that you are trained on when you start at CSB, the program itself is challenging but easy to follow, and is also cleverly designed to make you progressively more independent in the gym, which is in and of itself a huge confidence boost! I felt completely helpless at the beginning of my time at CSB, flopping around like a hot mess noodle person and not understanding how any of the equipment works. Now, for the first time ever, after three months of a solid routine and clear, helpful gym structure, I could actually go into a gym on my own and set up my full workout solo! That's HUGE for us noodle people. If you are new to lifting and the equipment intimidates you, CSB is worth it for this alone!!

3. The People: The community of people who come to CSB is supportive, friendly and inspiring. Especially as a woman who hears horror stories about traditional gym settings, CSB is the total opposite--some nights its just me making my baby gains on the bench press surrounded by all these SUPER powerful, super cool other women training for competitions and lifting all the fun colored huge heavy plates! What better motivation exists than that?? Everybody cheers each other on, and there is a very cute Discord community full of tips, affirmation and cute pet photos to boot. It's such an affirming environment, and I never feel intimidated or uncomfortable (just impressed and inspired!!). I've heard gym culture can be toxic, body negative and competitive. You won't find a shred of that bad energy at CSB.

This is a very long Google review, but I hope it is helpful to someone out there who might be ready to experience the joy of lifting heavy things off the ground in a place full of the sweetest and coolest lifters around. Very happy to have found CSB, and I'm excited to continue my lifting journey there for hopefully a very long time. Hope to see you there :D

I can't recommend CSBC enough. As someone who is brand new to powerlifting, I already feel that I've made enormous progress in the past 2 months here. The coaches are wonderful and have helped in so many ways--improving my form, ensuring that I'm going through the movements safely, etc. Nick is incredibly responsive and thoughtful regarding what's needed to make the space inclusive and supportive. Highly, highly recommend!

I have finally found programming that works for me and is starting to provide me the results I have been wanting for years now. The varied workouts don't make working out feel mundane & I never get bored with training like I have in the past. The coaching staff really takes time to pay attention to detail and have created a wonderful environment for everyone. Though I had barbell experience, CSB has worked to correct some improper form that would have led to problems in the future. I am forever grateful for the lifestyle I have created for myself in this gym. If you are looking for a new start, do it here.

I've been loving my time here! I've been training here for 3 months with no history of strength training or spending time in a gym before and I'm having a blast learning something new each time that I come in. I would recommend this program to anyone starting out. Everyone I meet here is welcoming and helpful ... a wonderful enviornment all around.

I’ve been taking classes at Cedar Street Barbell Club for a little over a month now and have been completely blown away.
The trainers are absolutely outstanding and make sure to give individual attention to each person in the class. I love the programming and the emphasis on form and control and getting down the three major lifts before incorporating additional exercises.
Would recommend this gym to anyone and everyone.

This gym has changed my life. I came here to lift for the first time a year ago and have never looked back. Coach Nick is possibly the best introduction to lifting you can get, he is incredibly knowledgable, supportive, and kind - and you will learn the basics properly to set you up for life. The whole coaching staff is equally great and so are the community of lifters there - you always feel supported and included. I only wish I found this sooner!

Amazing gym with a friendly environment! I love how inclusive this gym is. It's very diverse in gender, race, and body types (very different than a lot of other gyms of this type). Its always a great temperature for working out. The coaches are very encouraging, and they spend a fair/equal amount of time with each member in the gym during small group training. I never felt left out or like someone else was getting all of the coach's focus. I love it here and I would highly recommend to anyone looking to start/continue their powerlifting journey!

I have been training here over 3 months now. This is by far the best gym experience I have had. The gym is extremely inclusive and Nick is a great coach. This is a perfect place if you have never picked up a barbell before or you are an experienced lifter. Community is amazing and extremely friendly. If you are thinking of checking it out, do it. You won’t regret it.

Awesome and inclusive gym! I've been training here for a few weeks and it's honestly the first time that I (a complete non-jock) have looked forward to working out. Everyone's super-friendly and supportive, and Coach Nick is a wealth of great information on getting stronger in a safe and structured way.

Training at Cedar Street Barbell has been an incredible experience. Coach Nick takes pride in teaching his new pupils like myself how to move efficiently and pushes us when he knows we have more in the tank to give. I fell off for a number of years and did not think my body remembered how to squat, hinge, and deadlift under weight. Well, after a few sessions with Coach Nick, Lord knows i found out how erroneous my hypothesis was. Although I am moving away in a few months, I cherish the community I built at Cedar Street with Coach and will stay connected. Thank you so much, Coach!

I joined Cedar Street Barbell (CSB) club after trying a few other gyms and trainers in the city. Nick helped correct my form and showed me how to be more confident deadlifting…a lift that has caused me some injury in the past. He has top of the line equipment and the gym has adequate parking around it. I’d recommend anyone looking to get stronger, in a positive environment, to join CSB.

CSB is a really great gym. It's got a really good vibe and a way more inclusive lifting culture than anywhere else I've been. I've been doing strength and stability coaching w/ Nick for 4 months and I've made more strength training progress than in 5 years of working out prior. Great coach, super clean facility, and a really solid choice for someone looking to get into weight lifting.

Absolutely loved this Barbell Club. I looked up reviews first beforehand and just the level of customer service set the tone. The wealth of knowledge from Nick was amazing! I’m new to the lifting community and he made sure I built a solid foundation from the ground up! Proper stance and positioning before executing a great lift, squat and so on. I felt welcomed at the gym and immediately felt like home. I know many google location and it was always parking right at the door for me! Love the atmosphere, Nicks playlist are lit haha and I will definitely be back!

I've been training here for a few weeks now and it's been incredible. I started with 0 knowledge of lifting and already feel more confident in a gym around weights. Nick has been extremely helpful and crucially unintimidating and supportive throughout. The community is small but super nice and supportive. If you're more experienced, there are plenty of people there in that bracket too. The pricing model is flexible and so reasonable, especially intro training sessions. Seriously recommend if you're looking for a change in your fitness.

I met Nick, the owner, at a powerlifting meet in March and after an initial conversation, signed up for a membership at Cedar Street. In three months, I've improved my technique and hit multiple PRs. Nick and the other coaches are patient, professional, knowledgeable and truly want to help their clients achieve goals in the best and safest way. Fantastic experience all the way around.

Nick is a very nice and knowledgable guy. His gym is clean, filled with good gear, and near I-95. I decided to get a weigh-lifting coach to look at my squat. By no means am I a powerlifter, just someone who wants to stay healthy. In one hour he corrected my form, improved my confidence, and gave me a plan. He focuses on correct technique so that you can lift for years to come. I highly recommend him for a one hour session and beyond.

I have been lifting/training for years in conventional gyms until I found CSB. Hands down one of the best strength gyms, such a great environment with a positive community of members. Coach Nick really knows his stuff and personalized each workout for my goals. No cookie cutter training. Very laid back and never have to wait for equipment (which is competition equipment for the serious lifters out there). Only great things to say about this place!

I can't thank Nick enough for the opportunity to come in and get some hands on experience in powerlifting. His gym is clean with new equipment and he is very attentive, answering any questions you have. I have been lifting consistently for years and I can say that in one Saturday afternoon that my squat has improved immensely. He was able to look over my technique and fix my form for better mobility while addressing the pain/tightness I previously experienced. This is no Instagram challenge and no muscle head screaming, just pure strength training. I highly recommend this to anyone looking to improve their form, posture, and overall strength.

I was really impressed by Nick. Professional, enthusiastic, eager to share his knowledge and encouraging of your efforts. He also stressed safety. His Squat School was a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon and I got a lot of knowledge out of it. If you are interested in learning proper strength training form-- especially working through your body's limitations and injuries-- he is really worth the time and energy. Check him out.

I went to Nick's free (yes, FREE) squat class and you have to go! It'll help you if you're an experienced weightlifter or just starting out. It's great for people who are into power lifting or not. I am not a power lifter, but the class was incredibly helpful in helping learn proper technique to prevent injury, maximize strength, and work on skills to help muscle recovery. Nick really knows his stuff and makes sure that you walk away from he class with the proper knowledge and skills to lift. If I could give a 6 star review I would.
