Hands down my favorite fitness center in Philadelphia. From the diverse classes, the quality equipment, to the knowledgeable staff. I had the privilege of working with Alicia, my member sales agent, and she was fantastic. She was very knowledgeable of the space, staff and classes. Her positive energy and warm welcome made me feel right at home.

Hey, so the front desk asked me to leave a review, but I didn’t want to say all this while I was standing right there in front of them. I ended up making this account just so I could be honest without feeling weird about going back to my regular gym routine.

I gotta say, the Thrive trainer, Nick, makes me super uncomfortable. Every time I’m in there, he’s either trying to push Thrive on me, talking trash about a member who didn't sign up to thrive or a girl that he detests but is still dating, and when ever he stopped me to talk, he would ask these little personal, borderline flirty questions that I did not invite. One time I was bending over and he made a joke about my flexibility then said I wasn’t ‘doing it right’ after I turned down thrive again, and honestly, it was just gross.

On top of that, the membership committee is just too much. Before I signed up, I swear I had like 14 voicemails from them. And it didn’t stop after I joined. I kept getting messages trying to get me to add on more stuff. It was constant. At first I thought, whatever, they’re just doing their job. But then I actually started going to the gym and half the time I’m on the leg press, I’m watching a bunch of kids in the office goofing off instead of doing anything serious. So now I’m like… what were all those calls even for if nothing is being taken seriously.

Overall, it’s just kinda messy. You really gotta walk in with your head down to avoid Nick or anyone trying to sell you something. I like going there to work out, but the whole vibe at the front end needs to be fixed.

4 stars because I like the equipment

I've enjoyed this gym for many years, and they continue to make improvements and modernize the equipment. I've also noticed that the staff goes out of their way to be kind and welcoming especially the last year or so. David in the office is great and has said hello and introduced other staff members. It makes a big difference in an environment that can be a little impersonal by nature. Glad to have a local business in the area. Only thing I wish they were open later on weekends.

I had come in to the Graduate Hospital location about a week ago to check the gym out and learn more about the prices. I did not meet with the gentleman I was in contact with about setting up an appointment, but was greeted by David. I had a pleasant experience with him, and this interview is not a reflection of my interaction with David. I was seriously considering joining the gym.

After the tour, they led me into the office area to go over the financials, which were not laid out to me prior to the visit when I was in contact with the customer service email, as they told me to come in first and get a "comprehensive side by side of the different memberships that way you can get the full picture of it all." After David had gone over the prices, I told him I would like to take a day or two to think about it, and he agreed and told me to contact him with any questions. As I was leaving, I was stopped by David's supervisor and met with confusion to as why I had not signed up right then and there. I get that the employees in the membership department are salespersons first, but the way I was interrupted from leaving was off-putting and rather distasteful. After I finally managed to make it through the interesting series of questions of which she was asking in attempt to direct me back to the desk to sign a membership, I shrugged it off as a rather odd encounter from a salesperson doing their job.

I received a follow up email which echoed what David had gone over with me and was further reiterated to contact them with any questions. Over the next week, I received calls, texts, and emails numerous times a day. It was extremely off-putting to say the least.

After I was turned off from the gym due to the aggressive sales tactics, I attempted to answer the calls on several occasions and tell them I was no longer interested, but each time I was met with a robo call that resembled those junk spams that lay deep in your email inbox.

After being met with a robot each time I answered, I called an individual at the front desk telling them to take me off whatever list they use to spam individuals numerous times a day.

My advice to anyone considering this gym, beware that a "tour" concludes with relentless distasteful sales tactics trying to sell you their most expensive and highest membership tier that includes several fees multiple times a year that proves to be rather difficult to cancel judging by the reviews on this page.

The sales tactics of City Fitness Graduate Hospital is an inherently awful business practice, so potential new members be warned. Hopefully in the near future they will resort to a sales approach that embraces moderation, politeness and less prone to inundating you with junk mail.

Been coming to this location for over a year and absolutely LOVE it! The staff are the absolute nicest especially Jake (who did my intro thrive session and still says hi to me every morning) and Melvin who is always friendly and working hard keeping every very clean. All the equipment is nice and the location is great but truly the stars are the lovely staff!

Gym is generally clean, but machines are frequently broken and repairs seem to take very long and be ineffective as machines will rebreak frequently. Staff can be hit or miss - some seem to generally care and are friendly, while others will look at you like they want you dead and not speak when spoken to. Membership price increases with no notable upgrades to the facilities proves to be frustrating as well.

People who go here are cool and nice - so that’s something!

Deceptive business practices (was told my membership was cancelled when It wasn’t was charged an extra $140 before I called them), dirty gym, constantly overcrowded, for what you’re paying just not nearly enough equipment. The staff is nice enough while they enforce terrible practices and try to peddle things to you through fine print

They charge so much to too many people and none of that money goes into the equipment

Update: an additional month of being charged when I was told It would be over, maybe I’ll just come in and steal some weights as they clearly don’t abide by any kind of laws

Edit: Like magic they added 2 more benches the day after my review lol. Nice. Leaving the rest as reference below…

First time gym goer. Member here for a few weeks. Facilities are clean, only witnessed one machine down for 1 day since I signed up. I’ve only had a few interactions with the staff but so far they’re nice and helpful.

My only complaint are there’s not enough equipment/it’s quite busy… so I end up doing a good 20-30 minutes waiting each day for the free weight benches or the smith machine for example. It’s confusing to me why there’s so many cardio machines (since I can just run outside) and not so many weight machines (that I obviously don’t own myself). I wish they’d just add more benches.

Anyways I consider price, machine availability, and cleanliness the top factors in my rating. I wouldn’t mind the price if there was better machine availability, so that is influencing my perception of value... hence 3 stars. (-1 availability, -1 for value) tbh I’d go to a Planet Fitness if there was one in Grad Hospital.

Absolutely horrific experience. Complete incompetance by staff. A million hoops to jump through during sign up you cant just walk in and workout. Been with them for 2 years. Recently I moved out of Philly so I had to cancel my membership. Turns out you have to give them a 30-day notice. I guess I should’ve known, but seems scummy.

So for the next 30 days, I have to pay for whatever expenses accrue. Here’s the real kicker. They’re charging me the $40 biweekly membership fee ($80 total for August), a $20 cancellation fee, AND a $60 annual facility fee to cover August 2025-August 2026. I gave you my notice in July 2025… I’m living in a different state since the start of August 2025. You are really charging me $60 for the annual fee that I’ll receive no benefit from?

All of this, from being locked in to pay another month of membership, to having to pay a $20 cancellation fee (FOR WHAT?), to having to pay the $60 annual facility fee that I’ll receive no benefit from, is just really such a scummy business practice.

If you deny them your debit/credit card, they will take your owed dues to a collection agency and tank your credit score. This has been documented elsewhere on the internet for City Fitness.

So if you are like me and are moving, be warned that you might end up paying $160+ to just cancel.

The best part is the actual billing team doesn’t have a phone number to call. Only an email. There isn’t a single staff member you can speak with, even people on the membership team, who can authoritatively handle these transactions for dispute.

Honestly city fitness is overpriced. I was paying $80/month with my employer’s discount applied. There are better gyms in the city for the price, just do your own research. I only got a membership here because my apartment was right next to them.

Many of the classes were not available, the equipment is available at other gyms, who accept fitness benefits at a lower price than $200 per month. The recovery and massage machines were dysfunctional. The staff was friendly, but the members are abusive to new members, who don't look like them. People did not see the value in the membership. They need a new member class.

This place is a joke. I’ve been trying to cancel my membership for two years, and they’ve done everything possible to make it a nightmare. I haven’t stepped foot in the gym in over two years, and was told my membership was finally cancelled (for a fee to cancel, of course) but they kept charging me and now have sent me to collections for hundred of dollars I don’t owe — even after confirming I was canceled.

I wasted so many hours on hold just trying to talk to a real person. Half the time no one answered, and when they did, they told me the “membership manager” wasn’t available. I even showed up in person multiple times and still couldn’t get anyone to take responsibility. It’s honestly pathetic.

They clearly don’t care about members — just how long they can keep milking your account. Once you try to leave, good luck. This place is shady, disorganized, and a complete scam. Avoid it at all costs

Been going here for a little over a year and it's a fantastic gym. Great equipment and friendly, knowledgeable staff. There were a couple times where broken equipment took a while to get fixed (4+ weeks), but the past couple times something has been broken, it got resolved within a week. I don't do any of the classes or other programs they have, but they seem great and people enjoy it. Communication around closures and other situations were certain amenities around out of service is clear as well, and they're great about letting you to enjoy other locations if something at your location isn't working.

I joined this gym about two months ago and have been absolutely loving it. I actually like the “awkward” layout that many others complained about in previous reviews. I find it’s never too crowded in one area & I love how there are multiple fitness studios/rooms to use when classes aren’t in session. Staff is always friendly, the shakes are great, and the sauna is massive. I just upgraded my membership to the studio plus option where you can take classes & have access to all locations. The one class I’ve gotten to try was mat Pilates with Sue & she was phenomenal. I think this is Philadelphias best gym that’s still reasonably priced. 10/10 reccommend.

I like the space, location, and it’s a good crowd for the most part. They have a decent amount of equipment considering how tight the space is, although I’ll never understand how much space they dedicate to treadmills when all 20 of them are never being used.

There are some things about this gym that grind my nerves, however. First, they let equipment sit with an out of order sign for much longer than what’s appropriate. Next, they never refill tissues or paper towels. They don’t have a single place for tissues in the weight room or downstairs- only at the front desk or in the locker room. My nose runs the entire winter so I find this very frustrating. Then, in those 2 locations that are supposed to have tissues, they’re only actually there about 40% of the time. So then you turn to a paper towel, right? Good luck with that. The paper towels are nearly always empty and they’ll be empty when you get there and still empty when you leave. I’ve noticed this being a trend at the Grad Hospital location and East Market (the only 2 gyms I frequent). Next issue is the lockers. They’re constantly breaking. Lots of them have a hinge hanging off that makes them feel unsafe to use. And what’s worse, is every single time I’m there I see someone get locked out of their locker and have to have a front desk person come open it. Thankfully this has only happened to me once, but when it did, the employee that opened it acted like it was the most inconvenient thing that’s ever happened in her life. This happened to my husband at East Market recently one night after using the sauna/shower. There was no way for him to call the front desk bc his phone was in the locker, there is no phone in the locker room that connects to the front desk, and there were no other people in the locker room. Bc of this he was forced to walk out to the front desk in nothing but a towel and stand there for 15 minutes until the only employee working was done helping someone else. That was a very humiliating experience for him, but he said the staff member handled it well. Last complaint is the bike racks. There’s 3 bike racks outside of GH and 2 of them are only being held to the sidewalk by one last remaining screw. They feel like they’re gonna give at any moment. They’ve been this way since I became a member here a year ago. Outside of East market there’s only 2 bike racks and they’re constantly full. For such a busy gym they should invest in more bike racks.

Overall I enjoy these gyms - however these annoyances feel like such easy fixes for them to implement that could improve the experience for everyone.

Read this review or Sara C's review before you make a mistake and waste your money! I cannot agree more with Sara C's review! I have been a member with this gym for almost 2 years now and have finally ended my membership with this gym. You are better off at another gym. Not only are you paying a monthly gym membership but you are also paying annual admin dues. I was just billed my annual admin fee even though the gym has been poorly maintained and the sauna was closed for most of last year. I asked for a prorated refund considering I am ending my membership this month and wont be using the facility, and they said no.

I had been hoping that improvements would be made sooner but have been met with disappointment over and over again. This is by far one of the worst gyms in terms of maintenance. First, there is always at least 2 or 3 machines and equipment that is out of order. They never repair them on time and you can go to the gym for weeks to see a sign stating that the equipment is out of order before they make any repairs. Second, they never have towels and they will always tell you that their laundry or dryer is not working. During my last two visits in February, they did not have any towels available. Third, they fail to maintain the hand sanitizers, wipes, and water filters. I was at the gym a few days ago and was there for nearly 2 hours and not once did anyone refill wipes. There were two dispensers that needed to be refilled and not once did anyone come to refill it. Also for all of 2024, they had these hand sanitizer dispensers that were never refilled, and they seemed to have taken them down sometime this year (probably to cut down on costs).
Also during this past summer, the sauna was down for nearly 3-4 months. I primarily go to the gym to the use the sauna, and there was no discount for not having that amenity during that time. They simply told me to go to another City Fitness gym which for me is inconvenient and out of the way. Lastly, they are terrible at keeping gym members updated about hours on holidays. I recall this past December ( I still remember the date - December 20, 2024), I went to the gym to try to work out and the entire facility was closed and under construction.

Overall, it's been a frustrating experience at this gym. There are better gyms now in Philadelphia- Equinox and Sporting Club at the Bellevue. I would consider those gyms first before selecting this one.

Pros: Good hours (open from 5AM weekdays), friendly staff, WiFi works, option to do classes

Cons: Overcrowded in morning/evenings, could use more squat racks/bench presses/cable machines. If coming during these hours be ready to wait for equipment or adjust routine.

Compounded by fact that multiple equipment is “under repair” for months with no updates/visible progress. They need to improve their maintenance workflow or be more transparent

Seems like more emphasis is put into the premium services like the training classes than the actual gym user experience

Overall: a convenient option for those living in Grad hospital who want flexible hours. But could be much improved especially considering the cost

Pros:
1. they have a good variety of free weights and machines, peloton bikes, squat racks, etc.
2. When I go at lunch, I largely can use what I want without waiting for it to become available
3. They have a sauna (when it’s not out of order)

Cons
1. There have been many times where equipment is out of order. Sometimes weeks and sometimes months (the sauna was broken for literally 3 months in the summer of 2024). When things are out of order there is next to no communication on a repair timeline. If you ask the front desk staff, they will tell you they have no idea. Also membership fees are not reduced if a key amenity such as the sauna is not usable.
2. The place is not very clean. Whether it’s the bathrooms, the water fountain, etc. it feels like the cleaners are doing the bare minimum. They really need to outsource their cleaning.
3. Not good value for money. I pay like $70 a month. I don’t have access to any of the classes (that’s only for premium members), there is no pool, basketball court, the equipment is just basic equipment, and sometimes it feels like there’s just not a lot of attention to detail (for example the weights on the bench presses are always in random spots and all switched around). There have been a couple times where the bench press I am using does not have any 45lb plates on it, because they’ve been moved to the leg press machine and not returned. This is curious to me considering there’s always like 3-5 staff members hanging out behind the counter. Surely one of them can walk through once every couple hours and make sure things are in the right place.

TLDR: City Fitness is not worth the price and there are better options (YMCA).

I’d consider the ymca on Christian st. I recently switched and I’m enjoying it much more. They have enough equipment that allows me to do an identical workout that I do at city fitness. I get access to basketball courts, pickleball courts, a pool, a sauna, a variety of different classes every week - all for almost $10 less a month.

The staff is also much more attentive. In the off chance a weight or two is out of place, a staff member moves it back as they do periodic walk throughs. The space feels much cleaner, and overall it’s just a better overall experience and I get way more amenities for less.

I have been a member of this gym for nearly 2 years. It's the worst gym I have ever been a member at. The only reason I have stayed is the location and my favorite cycle class (shoutout to Abbey for being the entire reason I'm still a member at this gym). The space is cramped and they are always moving things around and doing renovation. They have a lot of space not used throughout the week in their Thrive studio, but they want to push everyone to be thrive members so you can't use it. Machines and equipment broken for weeks on end with 0 repair timelines. One of the two seated row machines has been out of service for a month. Assisted pull up machine down for over two weeks now. I've asked the front desk twice for a repair timelines and they don't have one. I assume they wait until enough equipment breaks to pay for repair. During this past summer, the sauna was down for nearly 3 months. Previously I had used the sauna 4x per week, and there was no discount for not having that amenity during that time. They are terrible at keeping gym members updated about hours on holidays. They won't post it on their social media for some reason. I've walked there when they were closed and ran into multiple members doing the same. It's not hard to post a story when you're closed, every other business in this city does that. Lastly this gym is filthy because they are cheap and won't outsource their cleaning. The sinks in the women's bathrooms are always grimy, and the water fountain has looked like this upstairs for two months. It's the most disgusting gym I have ever been a member at and it's definitely not the cheapest gym. If your New Year's resolution is to work out, go anywhere else.

City Fitness is a great gym. However, the Graduate Hospital location is not my favorite for a few reasons. First off, the positives; It has very friendly staff, very clean facilities, and a nice amount of amenities. They offer a full selection of classes and group/solo training, albeit smaller scale due to the lack of square footage of this location. I also really love the City Shakes protein shake bar. They have a wide selection of flavors and even protein coffee.

This brings me to the negatives, the size, overcrowding, no full size towel service, and lack of weight room organization. Granted the smaller size I understand overcrowding is inevitable however during these times staff should be more present to ensure weights and equipment are being properly put away and stocked as people are moving items all over the weight room floor to find space to complete their workouts.

My next major concern is again about weights/equipment not being in place. It seems regardless of crowdedness the weight room seems to be very unorganized and weights, mainly plates, are often not where they should be. The barbell benches are constantly in disarray with plates being in wrong slots or having only one of each size plate causing the user to have to constantly reshuffle plates and search the floor for the plates they need. The main concerns on this issue is Olympic squat rack plates and normal plates being mix matched, missing barbell clips (safety concern), and lack of properly stocked bench press plates (there seems to be less plates in general).

Last issue with this location is the lack of full size towel service. Their excuse for this is that it is not a “full service” club. This seems unfair to the members because we pay the same monthly dues as a full service club and should at least receive this basic amenity.

Overall a great place to workout in the neighborhood that just has a few key issues that need to be addressed to be a 5 star gym, even at its smaller stature.

Way too many people crammed into a space with little equipment. Peek times are unbearable and sales team is way overly aggressive, borderline predatory, when it comes to workout plans that they make you trial for a cheaper biweekly membership. I was charged 50 dollar early termination fee after expressing dissatisfaction and cancelling membership. Disappointed to say the least.

The employees are unprofessional and financial predators. They will tell you they have affordable memberships then charge you insane prices due to fine print they knew you would miss. They are comfortable saying things to you that they do not intend on following through on. They do not care about member satisfaction- only that they get to charge your bank account any amount they desire at any point in time. The fact that someone has to deactivate their bank card to stop the unexplainable charges from happening after already speaking to multiple employees is frightening. Be careful joining this gym it is a huge risk to your financial security.
