Climbed here for just under a year, staff is great and helpful always. I have brought many friends to climb with me and I trust their instruction for people who've never climbed before. Routes are always interesting and fun.

The place is clean, and there's enough bouldering and top rope space for the community. However, they keep restricting hours while not adjusting the cost. It can be tricky to get your money's worth for your membership when it's only open for a few hours every day.

Great climbing gym, but they do not offer what they say membership includes. I never once saw yoga class going nor was given an option to book a class. The fitness area is extremely
underwhelming. Their shop has great price, but the second you pay, they don't do anything about the issue with the item, even when it's the day of purchase. Their entire system is all online, the front desk tells you to go on the website for any membership-related changes, then website is pretty disorganized. However, they are really good at re-routing. There are always something new every 1-2 weeks. I don't think the membership price is justifiable with what they offer right now, but because there's no competitor in town yet, this is a good place for bouldering or rope climbing. Don't expect their CS to be like Orange Theory though.

A sizable gym, especially given that itβs not in a major city. Lots of routes that are changed relatively often, with a good variety. Itβs clean and well maintained. And the overall atmosphere is very friendly and connected. It skews to college kids, but thatβs to be expected, and it doesnβt feel exclusively like a college gym.

PART 2/2 (see "Joseph Walton's" review)
After the "AB" test, the employee asked that we be tested separately for lead. I'm not sure if that's just protocol for lead or if he forgot to do it for the toprope test, but either way, I left my girlfriend to take it and went to boulder.
After a couple minutes she came over and took off her harness. It was too fast for her to have finished, so I knew something was up. She told me that they had gotten through some of the test when he mentioned that something was off with her harness and asked if she could tell him what it was. She quickly answered that one of her leg loops had a twist in it, and that she could fix it. He responded that no, in fact, a twisted leg loop is an instant fail for the lead test. Mind you, she was wearing the harness the same way for the toprope test and nothing was said. He said we were allowed to climb top rope, but if I wanted to lead climb I would have to find someone else to do it with. I didn't take the lead test after she came over since I had no more interest in climbing on ropes at all.
We continued to boulder, but the whole mood was just off and felt strange. It felt like that specific employee didn't like us for some reason that we didn't know and couldn't fix. Maybe he was new, or just having a bad day, but from the moment we walked in the door the atmosphere was just off, as if we weren't wanted there. The same staff member, whenever anybody left the gym, always said goodbye, but when we left, not a word was spoken, even when my girlfriend cheerily said goodbye to him.
That being said, the bouldering was excellent; the walls were slightly higher than most bouldering walls I've been to, and the setting was very creative and enjoyable. We had a good time with some other climbers and it ended up being an okay day. I just wouldn't recommend it for anybody who likes lead or toprope, and I certainly wouldn't drive any distance for that purpose, since you might not even be allowed to.
Maybe I'll return sometime with one of my other climbing friends and see if it was just a one time thing, but for the foreseeable future, I'm planning on just climbing elsewhere.

PART 1/2
This is a bit of a long review, but I don't typically leave reviews at all, and I wanted to just share my...unique... experience at this gym as a long time outdoor and indoor climber.
My girlfriend and I were were driving home from Michigan, and as we both climb, we had planned to stop at a gym on the way home, and Climb Nittany was the one we chose to try out. We had never been to the location before, and as it looked relatively new, and had lead walls and what looked like good bouldering, we decided to stop in.
Our entire experience just felt off from the moment we walked in the door. I had previously filled out the waiver online, but my girlfriend hadn't, as she didn't have any mobile data or access to the internet. When we asked to have her sign a waiver, we were met with incredulity as to why she didn't have a phone. We were told we had to have a tour around the building, which was fine, of course. As we were waiting to be shown around, another party entered, and we were told we would have to wait until they were all checked in and ready to go with us. As we were on the way home from a weekend trip, we were hoping to start climbing pretty quickly, but we had to wait for the other party to get oriented and ready as well. Not a problem, of course, just wanted to note that if you're a first timer there, Nittany isn't like other gyms where you sign a waiver and you're good to go boulder.
After the tour, the staff member told us that he would email us both another waiver that we had to sign, so we headed back to the front desk to do that. We got there and the employee who was taking care of us was nowhere to be seen. Maybe he was helping the other party, but he hadn't told us anything, so we were just standing around waiting. I'm not sure why they have another waiver in the first place; I've never had to sign two before in any climbing gym. After a few minutes of standing around doing nothing, we found another employee and asked him if he could help us with the emailing of the second waiver, which he did. There was a little confusion since my girlfriend didn't have her phone on her and thus couldn't check her email, but the employee was able to get us a physical copy on an ipad, which was just what we needed. I had planned on taking a toprope and lead test so we could do rope stuff (I'm usually a lead climber), but we were so disappointed with the customer service we had been shown that we decided to just start by bouldering.
After a couple hours of bouldering, which was really enjoyable, we went back to the desk to inquire about rope testing. The employee who was at the desk was the same one who disappeared on us after the tour.
The rope testing was a different kind than we had ever had to before. For the toprope test, which they called an AB test, which was slightly confusing until it was explained, we were asked to tie in with a figure eight and then attach a grigri and mock belay with nothing on the other end. In most gyms, you both tie in and you just climb a few moves and take a fall. The employee critiqued basically everything about my knot, which was tied exactly as I always do outdoors. It had a twist in it, it wasn't close enough to my harness loop, and it had just barely two handwidths of tail. I mentioned while tying in prior that I could be more careful to do all those things if needed. Belaying was fine, the only thing was that there was so much friction at the anchor that lowering was practically impossible. Even with the staff member hauling on the rope, I had to have the grigri fully open and still kinda feeding the rope through with my right hand. It wasn't anything like an actual lowering demonstration. We went through the same routine with my girlfriend, and it was about the same, although she was asked how the grigri could be attached incorrectly. She was confused and didn't know how to respond, since literally anything but the way she did it was wrong and wouldn't work for climbing...

I'm a life long climber, and this is a really great gym. They have excellent route setting, with plenty of variety and quality at all grades. Their safety practices are outstanding. And the staff is the best. I'm really happy to have had a membership here since day one, since this place is such an important place to support for the region. This is a beautiful climbing gym with a friendly, outgoing and knowledgeable staff. Safety is paramount here. Beginners will learn everything they need to know to stay safe and have fun from the staff and well made videos. Ask them about their Learn to Climb special, it is a phenomenal deal!
As a regular here, I love that the routes are regularly being changed to keep things fresh. There is a nice variety of grades offering plenty of routes for beginners, intermediates and advanced climbers. The bouldering area is extensive, offering a climbing experience without the need of ropes or a climbing partner. Plenty of topropes of all levels. The lead wall has some excellent moderate routes to keep intermediates progressing without being intimidated. And plenty of 5.10+ as well.
I highly recommend Climb Nittany to anyone that has ever wanted to try climbing or is an experienced climber!

I had discovered some weeks ago it said this place had classes available for homeschoolers. I am a homeschool mom and have been wanting to get my daughter involved in fitness related activities, so I scheduled to come to Climb Nittany. This first time was on January 9th 2024. I received a call before the 10am start time from a female stating the reason for not being able to hold the class was because the instructor was unable to make it, and she mentioned she was contacting other families as well and it would be rescheduled for the next Tuesday. The 16th rolls around and I decide to call ahead to make sure it was still on for the day. I talked to a man named Jacob, and was told that there is a camp rented out there for the day and I would not be able to come, so they said the 23rd would be when I could come. I decided to go ahead and go this time rather than calling ahead. I drove 20 minutes there to find there was a completely empty building. No calls or emails from the staff. I left a voicemail and as of now my call has still not been returned.
If this is because this is a program no longer offered, why not tell me that instead of giving me the run around? I already paid in advance and have still received nothing, and I am upset that I drove that distance to be met with disappointment. My relationship with this business has soured now and I canβt see myself coming back now because at this point it would feel quite awkward after this level of unprofessionalism. Get your act together

100% positive! I climbed off and on for the past 20 years. The climbing community is a different breed of people and some of the best people you can be around. Climb Nittany is on point! The staff is amazing! Jake took the time willingly at the end of his shift to belay for my son to do some top roping climbs. Exceptional service, kind, patient, and positive! These are the types of people you want your children to experience! Definitely check them out!

I took my 3 boys (ages 12, 10 & 8) for their Homeschool drop-in and was extremely impressed! They were so fantastic with the kids and did a great job of explaining everything. My boys have been begging to go back again ever since! We plan to take my 6 year old daughter as well from now on. The one instructor said it perfectly, climbing is self challenging so you decide your level of difficulty. It's a great sport for all ages and Climb Nittany is an affordable option with an awesome variety of climbing walls!

If youβre looking for something fun to do that doesnβt cost a lot this is a great option, who knows you may just find your next hobby too. My kids had a blast, it was $12 for each of them for the day pass which allows you to come and go during their operating hours for that day. In our case it was 3pm to 10pm. Was great being able to climb awhile, leave for dinner and then go back to finish the night. Everyone was friendly and patient with my kids (5 & 8). Got busy by the time we returned after dinner but still enough climbing to go around you werenβt waiting in any type of lines. Definitely recommend and definitely will be going back!

Be very careful signing up for "promotions" here. Floor staff are great. Gym is ok, mostly overcrowded, but not bad. However, the owner has set up their promotions in sketchy ways. We signed a contract for a summer promotion that automatically gave them the legal right (based on the contract they require you to sign) to debit directly from your account three months later without any warning or proper invoicing. Not once did they follow best practices with us by invoicing us appropriately, or sending an email reminder that there were going to be taking money from our account after their promotion ended. By the time I discovered what was happening, I missed the "stop payment" deadline by two days and they debited a total of $318 from us. Upon contacting the manager, I was shocked to discover that she did not care about our situation. This was two months before Thanksgiving, so it wiped out our entire Thanksgiving budget. I appealed again asking her to meet us in the middle and she could have cared less. Be very careful, this company cared more about profits than people and sets up their contract to make it easy for them to take money without further warning months later. Our family will never be going back here or support a company that operates like this.

Great gym - friendly and helpful staff, quality route setting, variety of options for roped climbing (toprope, lead, auto-belay), and in a nice location. I like that routes' and boulder problems' holds are color coded by grade of difficulty.

I had guests that wanted something fun to do in State College but none of us have any experience climbing. I called to get information and the woman on the phone said we could do a day pass but we probably wouldn't get much help/explanation because the staff are busy with the whole facility. Said we should book a High 5 session if we were brand new, which could be done online. So tried to book a session through their website, online it showed lots of availability but said needed to call and book because it was within the week (my guests are only here this week). When I called this person acted like I was bothering him, was dismissive, and said there was absolutely nothing I could do unless it was at least a week in advance. Then said he βwas busy and needed to goβ in the middle of me asking another question. If you are that busy, just donβt answer the phone. Seems like they are great if you know what you are doing, or are a member, but aren't really interested in helping those that have never done it.

My wife and I have climbed here several times now and had quite a few involved interactions with the staff, so I feel confident saying that this is a great place to train and climb. Weβve climbed all over the world, in gyms large and small on the West Coast, East Coast, in the Midwest, and in multiple cities in Europe. This isnβt the biggest or tallest modern gym, but it is well designed and well run, with varied climbing and bouldering, a reasonable number of autobelays, and a high quality lead wall. The training area is great: campus board, a variety of hangboards, two squat racks, and a full selection of kettlebells, bands, etc. If youβre looking for a yoga studio and an ice cream parlor and a one-stop shop for all your favorite fitness classes, then this is not it. This is a climbing gym, and itβs a very good one. Weβre thrilled to have it in the area. And props to Mark and all of his staff for making it such a welcoming and fun place to be.

Walls were good and varied, climbing and bouldering routes were challenging and suitable!
Some staff members are a bit passive aggressive. One staff member who was working with youth set up right next to us without regard for safety distancing. The auto belay βrequiredβ video could be prefaced with asking if we would even like to use it.
Make sure to bring your own belay device, otherwise youβd need to get them yourself.

The gym is fine (kinda small) but for any experienced climber I highly recommend you avoid this gym. My wife and I are from Colorado and were in town visiting family. The check in process took close to 30mins followed by a 20-30 minute auto belay tutorial (seriously who gives a tutorial for auto belay!). I asked if we could get certified to belay for top rope and they begrudgingly got some snotty little kid to go through the top rope belay certification. I ended up passing but my wife didnβt even though sheβs an experienced climber. She hasnβt climbed in the last month so they wouldnβt even test her. After paying $23 each to access the gym and 45mins to check in we were left with 1 certified top rope belay individual and I had no one to belay me. I asked the staff if they would retest her or belay me and they said no to both (apparently their policy). $46 investment ending up only being able to use an auto belay on a low rated 5.9 route. Better to save your time and money then end up frustrated with this gym.

A+. A morning very well spent. We will be back. Even our 10 year old who is afraid of heights had a blast and was begging to come back before we were even out the door. An excellent facility. Clean and bright. The instructors were kind, patient and guided the students well while gently urging them to try a little more, it was just the right amount of supervision and self determination between the instructors and students. They were very motivational to the kids, cheering them on. Thank you all!

I want to say upfront that the floor staff at this place are great. They're super helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable, it's management and the pricing of this place that drove me away. I wanted to sign up for the student rate ($59/month) but was not told that I needed to show proof of enrollment. I received a bill of the normal rate ($99) and asked to be refunded, the folks at the front desk said I should be refunded. Management however, disagreed, saying that I received emails to send them my enrollment information. I don't remember receiving such an email, and if I did, it was likely lost among the flood of promotional emails I receive from this place.
Also, the facilities here are not worth the prices they ask. They have decent climbing, but very few classes and the strength and cardio training area is slim. I was paying $60/month at a well known gym in CA that had a laundry list of amazing classes and a great gym set up. In short, I think there needs to be another gym competing with this place to raise the customer service on their management side and reduce their pricing.
PSU students, be aware that this is an issue with this place and make sure you are clear on the enrollment verification situation.

The climbing was great, the mask rules were stupid, the guy at the counter that kept following me trying to flirt was extremely annoying

We just had a high 5 package today! It was so much fun. Jeff helped us the whole time and he was so encouraging and patient (and today was his first day!). I was quite intimidated at first but this was a wonderful experience. Kudos to you guys.

My husband and I live in Bishop, California and had heard about this gym opening up right down the street from my mom, who we had come to visit. We werenβt sure what to expect, climbing gyms vary so much, but we were so impressed! The routes are great-very thoughtful, good movement and had rests between bouldery sections making it feel more like outdoor climbing. The lead wall had plenty of routes to keep us busy during our visit. We will definitely be climbing here every time we visit!

Great new facilities, good problems with enough variety, super friendly staff. One of the highlights of State College.

Took the whole family to Climb Nittany at the request of my 9 year old daughter. We had such a good time learning how to climb up the walls. By the end of the hour my 9 year old was going all the way to the top and then belaying down the wall. Our guide Michael was wonderful!

We took our 5 and 7 year old here for the first time this weekend. They each did the High 5 package, and had an absolute blast. The facility was amazing, but the people were even better. Mark and his team exceeded our expectations, and our kids are hooked. Next time, mom and dad are going to take a turn as well!

We took our 5- and 7-year-old this weekend with zero expectations, and the service/facility blew us all away. Our kids were begging to go back before we even left. Management was friendly, accommodating and extremely knowledgeable. They made our kids feel safe the entire time and even helped give them the confidence to keep climbing. We will be returning, and we highly, highly recommend for families and for anyone who is the slightest bit curious about rock climbing!

Great location, and a great student rate for supplying a much-needed rock climbing venue to the tens of thousands of young adults in the greater State College area. Fills a great niche considering the only alternative is a meager bouldering/top rope wall at the PSU rec center.
-1 star because the number of available routes was lower than most other gyms I've been to. They could easily double the number of routes on each wall without a significant impact. Maybe I just happened to visit at the wrong time in their route setting schedule.

We had an awesome afternoon climbing with our virtual learning pod at Climb Nittany. The staff were incredible and did a great job encouraging each kid and building confidence to push themselves a little further. They are taking all the measures to keep the gym very safe during Covid. I would highly recommend this climbing gym!

The bouldering wall is great! Excited for the rest of the gym to open up and everything is coming together so quickly. It also feels really safe with the Covid precautions that theyβre taking . Grateful for this addition to state college, esp. right before winter!
