I’m in my second month here at CF Athletics in the Southside, and I’m loving it more than I anticipated! Even as an ex-collegiate Athlete, CrossFit always sounded intimidating to me, but I didn’t feel that way at all joining here. The foundations program for people who are new to CF makes the entry process so much less intimidating. Then once I joined regular classes, both the instructors and fellow members are super supportive and helpful as you get up to speed on technique and class structure. I highly recommend joining if you’re looking to be challenged but in a way that meets you where you are.

Coming from a gymnastics background, I was totally new to CrossFit, but the team at CrossFit Athletics made the transition amazing. Coach Chris, Erica, and Cassidy are all incredibly knowledgeable and encouraging. They really take the time to teach proper form and help you progress safely, while still pushing you to challenge yourself.
The community here is one of the best parts — everyone is super welcoming, supportive, and fun to train with. You can tell the coaches genuinely care about helping every member improve, no matter your experience level.
If you’re thinking about trying CrossFit for the first time or just looking for a great gym with awesome people, CrossFit Athletics is the place to be!

New to CrossFit, but not new to the health and fitness space. After 15 years as a certified personal trainer, I had the fundamentals down—but I was craving something fresh to reignite my drive and challenge me in new ways. CrossFit Athletics has been exactly that and more.
The instructors are phenomenal—welcoming, patient, and intentional about making sure every movement feels safe and empowering. They bring the perfect balance of professionalism and high-energy fun that keeps every class exciting. On top of that, the community is incredible. The encouragement, accountability, and motivation from peers adds a whole new level of inspiration I didn’t even realize I was missing.
In just one month, I’ve pushed myself further than I had in years of solo training. If you’re ready for a new spark, real support, and an environment where you can push limits while having fun, I can’t recommend CrossFit Athletics enough. I'm not one to typically leave reviews, but Crossfit Athletics deserves it!

This gym (box) is fantastic! Everyone has been so kind and helpful. The overall vibe of CrossFit Athletics is really what makes it a great place. I tried CrossFit years ago at another location and hated it - I felt that they were pushing you to get to the Rx weight as quickly as possible. That doesn't happen here. The coaches watch you like a hawk here - you'll be well supported. There is never any pressure to hit a weight other than what you can safely do on your own. The gym even encourages you to scale the weight down to get the movement patterns first to prevent I just, and to rocket your growth once you've learned the skill. Early morning classes with Chris are fantastic and he keeps it fun while also pushing you.
Highly recommend giving CrossFit Athletics a shot!

I worked out at CFA while visiting Pittsburgh with my wife in August 2024. Overall a great facility in an historic building in South Side Flats: the New Brewhouse 1950, a part of the once thriving Duquesne Brewery Company. CFA has lots of floor space, rig room and equipment. Good parking on the street. This is a warehouse box: old industrial with big garage doors. (My only criticism is that the floor is slightly uneven, but this is unsurprising given the heritage of the building and a small quibble). While we attended an open gym slot, the coach on staff that day, Dylan, was very helpful, assisting my wife with her bespoke HYROX training plan. He ensured that a sled was available and provided my wife with a good space outside to push it as well as coaching tips. I will be back next time I am in the Steel City. Four of five stars only because I didn't attend a regular class and can't comment on the quality of the coaching. Otherwise, I strongly recommend.

If you want a trainer who knows her stuff and how to personalize workouts for you, Erica at CrossFit Athletics is IT! Erica has such a good coaching style and personality too. She is dependable, encouraging, and will push you as far as you want to go. You decide what you want, and Erica will give you the means to get you there. Honest, friendly, and dedicated to helping people reach their goals. The gym is 'no-frills' but has what you need. It's a simple, straightforward space to concentrate on your fitness.

CFA was everything I could’ve wished for and then some.
I’ve been in gyms for most of my life. Before CFA, I felt kind of lost in my fitness journey and was trying to find my way. I was nervous to try a new form of training, but now being six months in, I do not regret my decision in the slightest.
The people I train with are great, the coaches and programming are great and thorough, and I will miss CFA dearly. Training became fun again, I was consistently challenged, but I gained so many friends and supporters along the way. Gabe and Jenn run a top-notch organization.

In general, it’s a good place to go. They have a great facility. All the coaches are friendly, they will guide you through the classes. On other hand, the classes are good for those starting in CrossFit. It’s really hard to work individually. using their extra space to work towards your goals individually can be limited, or not allowed. Open gym is not available as much( only 1hr on weekend). however, it’s lil pricy for attending classes only.

I have been involved in competitive sports my entire life, but I just started CrossFit about a year ago. I have had many coaches in the past and overall, they have made a positive impact on my life. With that said, I have NEVER been a part of a gym where every coach was as supportive and dedicated as the coaches at CFA. I did not know what I was getting myself into when I joined the gym; I just wanted to be more consistent in working out and gain strength. I did not expect to love CrossFit as much as I do, but that's just the environment CFA provides and I am proud to be a part of. They are encouraging, everyone looks out for one another, cheers for accomplishments and PRs, and creates an incredibly positive atmosphere. I feel like I have gained so much over the year and that wouldn't have been possible without this group of people and this sport.

I feel so lucky to have found CrossFit athletics. I am a military spouse so we move all the time and finding a great gym is always at the top of my list. I’m always nervous starting somewhere new but I felt immediately welcomed at CFA. The coaching and programming are top notch and scalable to all abilities. Moved to Pittsburgh for a job and was devastated to have to leave my home CrossFit gym behind. After trying 6 other area CrossFit gyms, I can confidently say that CrossFit Athletics has the largest and best stocked facility. It accommodates large classes and I feel comfortable dropping in any time to work out, as I know I won’t be in the way of other programming. There is never a workout programmed that I can’t complete with the shared equipment onsite, which was shockingly an issue at many other gyms I dropped into in the area. Best of all the coaches are engaged and truly care about keeping the athletes safe. They’ve always met me where I was on a given day and allowed me to modify the workout to my needs and skill level. If I want to level up, they offer lots of clinics to practice skills-although many are during the work week and wouldn’t fit my personal schedule, I appreciate that they exist. For the skills I have down, the workouts are consistently challenging. At other PGH CF gyms, I’ve had the most uninterested instructors and have been reprimanded for modifying workouts, which defeats the purpose of group fitness. To make it short: if you are an athlete that wants to get stronger and responds to smart, informed, effective coaching, as well as appreciates a well-run facility, you have to choose CFA. There’s no better choice in PGH and I hope to be a member for as long as I’m based here.

Recently moved to Pittsburgh for school and was searching for a reliable gym. What I found at CrossFit Athletics was so much more than that. I was immediately welcomed into the CFA community with open arms and have met some incredible people. The coaches are amazing and work with me during each class to ensure I'm learning the correct way to do things and not just going through the motions. Attended this gym while I lived in Pittsburgh. From the time I signed up until moving it was a great workout spot and I absolutely loved the people. Everyone was great! Started Crossfit here at the end of Covid and while I no longer live in the state, I'm so glad I learned foundations here. Staff are real people who want to help you every step along the way, even if you've never picked up a barbell and can't do a pull-up. Truly, anyone can do it and fellow members are just as supportive. Being surrounded my all fitness levels and ages in one class creates a very cool community that is non-judgemental and meets you where you're at. I didn't expect the amount of one-on-one attention I would receive, and while I enjoy my current Crossfit gym, the learning/growth at CFA is unmatched!

I have tried several gyms around the Pittsburgh area, but Crossfit Athletics (CFA) is by far the most welcoming gym I have come across. Upon inquiring, Gabe, one of the owners, reached out to me personally to understand my fitness goals and explain the gym's dynamic and programming.
The gym strikes a perfect balance between the rough/tough Crossfit vibe and maintaining a spotless facility with high-quality equipment. Every coach at CFA is eager to work with each member personally to ensure that they reach their goals. I am also a participant in the gym's Individual Design program (ID), where Jenn, the other owner, works closely with me on a daily basis to provide individualized programming, nutrition guidance, weigh-ins, and any other support I need to achieve my own goals.
Going to CFA has easily become the best part of my day, thanks to the awesome coaches and the lasting friendships I've built within the gym community. I highly recommend this gym to anyone looking for a welcoming, supportive, and effective fitness community.

This is not your average gym or CrossFit box. Hands down, this is one of the most supportive and friendly group of people you will ever meet. The coaching staff is top notch. They are patient and thoughtful with an eye (and ear) for constantly improving the member experience. The members are supportive and cheerful even at the early morning workouts!
The facilities are first rate, including clean locker rooms and equipment. In addition to great classes they offer excellent personal training and nutritional counseling. I have been a member of CFA for 10 years and in today’s day and age that kind of loyalty to a gym (or any business for that matter) is rare. What keeps me coming back is the coaching and the community. If you’ve never experienced CrossFit or a community based supportive gym, I highly recommend you give CFA a try. You won’t be disappointed!

CFA has provided me every opportunity to be the best version of myself, whatever that has meant at any specific period in time. Gabe, Jenn, and the coaches are quick to remind me that fitness is not just about weight loss or putting up the highest score (although I have found success with both of those at CFA), but that it is also about being healthy, and fit for your life. Visiting from our of town and did a drop in workout. Gym staff were super communicative. Coach Christopher helped break down the muscle up steps for me. By the end of class, I was able to reliably do bar muscle ups which is a huge development for me.

This place is great! All of the coaches have been knowledgeable, supportive, patient, and kind. In addition to group classes, I also did individual training sessions with one of the coaches, Chris, who has all the aforementioned wonderful qualities and everything else you could possibly want in a coach. He has really gone above and beyond to be so helpful and has taught me so much! The owner, Gabe, really cares about the people that attend his gym and their progress toward their goals and is so down-to-earth, approachable, and encouraging. In case it’s helpful to share my background, I had never consistently worked out until coming here a little over six months ago. Growing up as "the fat kid" with asthma, I have a lot of negative associations and insecurities regarding exercise. My time here has been healing and provided helpful first steps in my fitness journey. The workouts can be intimidating, but everything is scalable. You will survive. It was a lot to learn at the start, but it gets less confusing. Many people here are impressive athletes, but they have largely been kind and welcoming to me despite my background and ability level. I’ve been to a handful of crossfit gyms, but Crossfit Athletics will forever be THE exemplary gym in every respect. My crossfit experience began here. A few years ago, I had no understanding of body mechanics or how my body could move. Even after the foundations training course, it took me almost a year for my anxiety to quell & for my colon to be at ease before coming to each class (intimidation fears). Since day 1, the owners Jenn & Gabe instilled confidence (in me) & preached this mantra of, “yes, you f-ing can!” which has rehabilitated me emotionally & physically over the years. From the stellar programming, to the equipment, to the supportive coaches, this gym checks all the boxes. Seeing the progress I’ve made in my strength & fitness abilities motivated me to keep coming back with a determination to be better than the person I was yesterday. I’m 38, out of shape, and usually hate group workout classes (let me experience being out of shape in private!). But the instructors here are fantastic. They are so uplifting, supportive and personal, that it might be the most non-judgmental “all are welcome” type of gym atmosphere that I’ve ever experienced. I def was behind when I started (again, out of shape), but I never felt that way. The positivity and support is so prevalent and contagious that even the members offer encouragement. There is no denying that joining a new gym can be daunting. As someone who had never tried CrossFit before and hadn’t been to a gym in over a year, I was hesitant to sign up to say the least. After having been a member at CrossFit Athletics for 2 months now, I can confidently say that joining was the greatest gift I’ve given myself.

Love this gym! GREAT group of people and Jocelyn is a great coach! I was in Pittsburgh for a little over 2 weeks for work, and wanted to find a gym to work out at while I was there. Stopped here the first day with the idea that I’d gym hop till I found one I liked. Well.... didn’t end up going anywhere else. Fell in love with this place. Great setup inside with three double-sided racks (2 spots per side per rack - 12 total spots) with a nice big open space in the middle of the gym. They also have an “upper” area where they allow open gym time whenever someone is there (which is most of the time throughout the day). They’re also located at a nice spot where a 400m run is around the block they’re located on which makes running WODs easy.
The people are great here. I’ve done drop ins where you’re the “outsider” and the men in the class act like they’re better than you and look at you as some type of a threat (as another man). Quite common actually. Not here at all. I was only there for 2 weeks and from day 1 I was made to feel like i had been there for years by not only the coach but the other people working out there.
As far as the equipment, I’d rate it as 3.5 stars. They have everything you would need, but some of the stuff needs to be either refurbished or replaced. They also have very few bands to use. If you’re not a person that uses bands at all, then no issue but I use bands a lot for pre-workout resistance stretching and I didn’t have many options for different resistance weights.
As far as the WODs, I find this to be very subjective. Personally, I prefer WODs to be varying and always changing. It keeps my body from getting used to a certain lift or working out a certain muscle group. My current home gym uses this varying method and I love it. CFA seems to do cycles. By that, I mean that they do generally the same thing every week but build each week however have some kind of variation albeit slight. And by generally I mean that they vary the WODs every week but they’re pretty much the same style. For example:

You can start to see the pattern. On one hand, I can see the value of this as you can compare how much stronger you’re getting through out the cycle. If you like this type of workout schedule then this is exactly where you need to be. However as I stated earlier, my personal preference is to always change. Doesn’t mean I would knock down the rating at all because this was a nice change of pace from what I’m used to, it’s just a different style than I’m used to.
As a whole, I’ll absolutely come to this gym again. It’s a great atmosphere and like I said earlier Jocelyn is a GREAT coach. As proof, (and don’t tell my home gym this...) I got my first EVER muscle up (ring) here based on not only jocelyn’s Advice but also two of the guys in the class (Bill and Matt). Additionally, I did my first true unbroken double unders here.
I’d give it 10 out of 5 stars and will absolutely suggest this place to any colleague that travels to Pittsburgh for work and I’ll absolutely be stopping again if I find myself in Pittsburgh.

I've been a passionate skier for 30+ years. Since I started at Crossfit athletics a few years ago my skiing capabilities even as I reach middle age have improved greatly due to the core conditioning provided by Gabe and Jenn's daily workouts. Intense workouts usually no longer than 30 minutes structured throughout the week with attentive instructors modifying workouts to people's individual needs/request. If you want to be active in sports when you get older I highly recommend a phone call to Gabe/Jenn and start getting the core strength needed to slow down Father Time.

Two words, Quality and Realism . Gabe and Jenn run the gym as a BUSINESS, which a lot of other boxes across the city don't have the knowledge to do; which drastically benefits the members in the long run. Your working out in a facility that has always has resources you need; and staff that can always help you. That is very rare in the Crossfit space. This is way more than just a monthly membership to access a gym to workout in.
Of course there is the given sense of "community" at CFA that makes it tick, but their overall approach to one's fitness goes beyond that. The trainers at CFA are there to guide you to achieve your goals, big or small, regardless of fitness level. Its not just show up for a class, sweat a little bit, and call it a day. If you have a fitness journey planned, CFA will provide the vehicle ;)

I started CrossFit at an amazing gym in Indianapolis (Broad Ripple Fit Club), which set the bar pretty high in terms of coaching and community. When I moved to Pittsburgh, I was concerned that I wouldn't find a place like that. But CrossFit Athletics has been everything I was looking for in a gym.
Jenn + Gabe (owners + coaches) have been great, and I've enjoyed getting to know the other members.
Things I really like: The competitors have a (huge) room where they can train and the rest of us have a different (huge) room where we can workout. The bathrooms are amazing and CFA has showers! There is ample parking. And the open gym hours make it easy to do accessory work.

Definitely the best Crossfit affiliate in the city. Tons of space and equipment, great programming.. the coaches know their stuff.

This gym is my second home. The fact that I have been a member for five years is a testament in itself to the care and knowledge of the coaches, supportive atmosphere of the members, and healthy lifestyle being a part of CrossFit Athletics (CFA) encourages. I have been to other gyms on my travels, and the thoughtfulness and care with which the coaches treat each of their members stands out to me at CFA. Through the coaching and support at CFA, I have been able to reach many fitness goals I never thought possible, and made lifelong friends along the way. No matter where you are on your fitness journey, CFA is the place to be!

I've been a member of 2 CrossFit gyms and have visited many others through my travels within my line of work. After 2 years at CFA with Jenn and Gabe (the owners) I can honestly attest that they do nothing but think about what they can do to make their athletes better, stronger, fitter, happier, and all around their best self; if a decision comes to making money or making the athletes better, the athlete takes priority. We are not numbers, we are individuals that every coach somehow manages to remember every detail about! Bum shoulder? They are aware and help scale a movement to keep you safe. Can't do pull-up? They'll start you on something that you 'can' do and build you step by step to getting that first pull-up. The community within the gym also supports your goals and provides an amazingly safe space where you can come and work on yourself without being judged, but by getting cheered on by everyone around you. I wouldn't say I'm a very critical person, but I would say that I 'notice' things, good or bad, and all I ever notice at CFA are all things good! Here's to many more years with the CFA family! :)
