This gym is more of a scam than an actual gym. I signed up for a monthly subscription over the summer and paid the $50 new member fee. After two months, I left for college and was under the impression that I had canceled my subscription. They continued to charge my card and would not respond to my calls. I blocked them on my card and was FINNALY able to get someone on the phone. They explained that I owed $50+ in late fees and prior payments. With no other option and the threat of sending it to debtors, I paid the late fees on another card and was sent cancellation documents. Two months later, I get ANOTHER charge on my second card that I paid them for the monthly membership fee. At this point, I am down over $150 in fees for only 2 months of going to their gym. Please do not go here, they will take your money months after you cancel and are truly practicing shady business. Sign up with the YMCA or Planet Fitness.

I had a great experience at this gym until today when I tried to cancel my membership. They have a “30-day cancellation policy,” which basically means the earliest your membership can end is 30 days from the day you request it. For example, if you pay on the 25th of the month and decide to cancel on the 27th, you’ll still be charged again on the 25th of the next month, essentially paying for just two extra days. This makes no sense.

On top of that, cancellations can only be done in person with the manager, which meant I had to stop by twice. You cannot cancel through the app or over the phone, which is very inconvenient.

That said, the gym itself has always been clean and overall a good experience during the past few months I’ve been a member.

SCAM ALERT – CRUNCH STATE COLLEGE

Easily the worst gym I’ve ever joined. Constant billing issues from day one and unhelpful staff. I kept getting late fees despite having automatic payments set up. Every time I asked about it, I got excuses: “That’s weird,” “It’s your bank because we are a new business,” or “It was past management, they got fired.”

I talked to multiple managers who all had no answers and never called me back. When I finally spoke to the GM, Chris, he blamed my bank and took zero responsibility. His “solution” was a couple free months and a few bucks back—sometime in the future. (aka you're never seeing it)

My bank statements (below) clearly show I was charged and paid on the same day. *left hand column is date received, right side is date paid*. This is a Crunch billing issue, not mine. My bank has now opened a dispute since Crunch refuses to fix it and I canceled my membership as should everyone else. Had to go through all the trouble of canceling my card as well. It is telling when current employees say "I would never get a membership here if it wasn't free for me."

My membership is supposed to be $15.99/month. I’ve been charged $25.99 and even $55.99 at times. Over $100 stolen. However, sometimes they do charge me the $15.99. Which goes to show they literally pick and choose lol. Total scam. Awful managers. Go to planet fitness or anywhere else.

Review will be deleted upon refund from crunch if they make it right BEFORE my bank. cheers.

New ownership is actually horrible, had the worst time trying to cancel my membership. Had to cancel my debit card twice to finally be done with them. New ownership also doesn't seem to much care about the customers, just making sales and profits. Screw Crunch Fitness

Disappointing location…. Truck driver friendly so that’s good, showers were cold and wouldn’t even get to warm, water fountain cold, missing multiple back machines other locations have, also missing multiple cable connection pieces other locations have. I’d give this place another chance if I’m in the area in the future but this time I was disappointed

Good gym, but whoever owns the strip mall that it's located in has to be heavily fined for their negligence of maintenance. the parking lot is crumbling, there are no longer visible lines on the parking lot, so parking is free for all at a certain point. the parking lot has multiple asteroid's crater sized potholed that you have to dodge. awful property management.

Went to workout 7 am Sunday. Not open. Went for a run, came back at eight, still not open lots of angry people in the parking lot and no signs of opening. Not the first time this has happened. Disappointing. Come on crunch, you’re better than that.

dropped in here on our way through. the space was great, seemed to be plenty of employees working but this was one of the filthiest gyms we've been in. The gym floor equipment was unkept but it was the condition of the bathroom that made in unbearable. The floor had not been cleaned in days... easy. trashcans overflowing. gross something splattered all over the mirrors. toilets and stalls... gross.

UPDATE in response: Look again, I'm a Crunch member. I travel the country using Crunch locations as my training stops. No need to reach out to me though.

Today is the second time in a month that I have come in on a Sunday for the gym not to be open on-time, last time being 31 Aug. Waited 1.5 hours after opening today to see if someone would show up but no joy. Another person that was waiting today said this is the third time it has happened to him.
Giving 2 stars instead of 1 because the gym is well stocked and has nice equipment. The men's room is usally trashed but I think that says more about the members then the gym. The lady that cleans is definitely the hardest working person there.

I like the gym and have worked with a trainer there that helped me quite a bit. It can get a little busy early mornings, but other than that, i think they do a good job as far as gyms go. My biggest gripe is the hours on the weekend (I would prefer slightly earlier openings than 7), but even more so, weekends seem to be a roll of the dice as to if they open on time or not. On three separate occasions, I’ve shown up where the gym isn’t open at 7. I’ve waited around for a half hour to an hour with no luck. Either there is a problem with scheduling or people are oversleeping (more likely). Regardless, they need to figure it out. It’s poor form on their part.

Has been a nightmare trying to cancel the membership here. Joined for the summer but was not able to use it... they insist on annual fee even though I'm ended this after 3 months. Won't let me cancel via phone, email, or app. Asked me to come to the front desk, where they couldn't cancel. They needed me to write and mail a signed letter, which I did. I have acknowledgement that it's canceled, but they keep trying to charge me, and will not respond to inquiries. Terrible customer service. Scam.

Only lived here for a month and this is the third time the gym has not been open on time, no post or story letting anyone know someone’s even coming… been waiting over an hour in the parking lot past said opening time. People are standing outside the gym in 40° weather, everyone we talked to said this is a repeating thing here on weekends. Would suggest getting some new openers, over an hour past opening time with no communication to members is unacceptable.

Im not even a member here but moved to the area from Orlando, where I was a member of crunch fitness. All of these one star reviews are 100% accurate. The facilities are nice, but the predatory business practices of a corporate owned franchised gym are something to watch out for. Sorry crunch, im not letting you get me again. Sucks you have to get another 1 star review and I've never even set foot in the building.

Overall good. The only gym I've been to, but I enjoy it.
Needs more Pectoral Fly/Rear Deltoid machines. They're always busy now that the students have returned.
Not enough cooling to handle 85F outside with 35% machine utilization inside. I don't bother visiting if it's above 80F outside.
The water fountain filter was red for a long time before it was changed.
The TVs have neither sound nor subtitles, so they're unwatchable.

I’ve had such a great experience at Crunch Fitness! The gym is always clean, well-organized, and has a wide variety of equipment—whether you’re into lifting, cardio, or functional training, there’s everything you need. The staff is friendly, welcoming, and always willing to help out if you have a question. I also love the upbeat atmosphere—it’s motivating without being intimidating. The group classes are a huge bonus too, with something for every fitness level. Overall, Crunch makes working out something I actually look forward to. Highly recommend!

I went in to cancel my membership, but the manager wasn't on-site and was told I had to come back another day. Fine, I came back the next day, and they told me I would receive an email confirming the cancellation. That email never came. Then, I found out I was charged again after I thought I had canceled. I called multiple times trying to reach the manager, when I finally got through, they put me on hold for over 20 minutes! After all that waiting, I was told that it's company policy to charge you for the next 30 days even after canceling your membership.

Do yourself a favor and avoid Crunch Fitness in State College, their cancellation process is a nightmare.

I’m posting this now that I finally received my REFUND!

I want to start by saying, the gym itself is very nice, equipment is good, and functional. However, when I signed up, the employee who signed me up, Noah, created two accounts under my phone number. causing me to get double charged each month. The accounts were under my first name but he used my middle name as my last name for one of the accounts. I called to get one of the accounts removed and so I can be reimbursed, but the “manager” AKA Noah, argued with me about my signing up process and stated “there’s no way one of my employees created two accounts under your name.” Well you did, Noah. Seems like they are trying to reach their sign up goals and just making double accounts. So I cancelled both of my memberships. I’m not going to be gaslighted by the manager. I’m going back to planet fitness, they never done this to me before.

Unethical business malpractice. Uninformed, incompetent workers.

I am writing this review anonymously to negate any negative impact on the worker who guided my sign-up process. Although this business failed to show respect to me, the customer, I do have respect for the workers even though I experienced incompetency with them as well.

Prior to joining Crunch Fitness State College, I saw multiple previous negative reviews mostly regarding the annual fee of $55 at cancellation. With this in mind, during my sign-up process, I carefully asked questions about the cancellation process. I had to correct the Crunch Fitness State College worker multiple times on the company's policy because even they seemed to not understand it. I told the Crunch Fitness State College worker to use this as a learning experience.

Upon cancellation, I learned not only is there a $55 annual fee regardless of membership time length; a 30 day written notice is required prior to cancellation. I wanted prior to joining and had a 2 month membership. While I expected the $55 annual fee at cancellation, I did not expect to have to pay another $16 for a third month of my month-to-month membership after I have already cancelled my membership. To clarify, I had to pay an extra $16 in addition to the annual fee of $55 at cancellation because I did not give a 30 day written notice of my cancellation. For two months, I paid $43.50/month, and this was with a good deal of $0 enrollment fee and $0 for the first month. So essentially, I paid $87 for two months with a good deal, which isn't bad for me. However, I knew Crunch Fitness State College had a sketchy cancellation policy prior to joining, did my "homework" on it, and still was scammed in the end. While I was only scammed for $16, those who don't know about the annual fee would have been scammed for $71 for a two month membership.

This could have been easily avoided with transparency at the sign-up stage. The Crunch Fitness State College worker during my sign-up process could not state the cancellation policy, was hesitant to talk about it, and very clearly just wanted to get me to sign-up for my money. I moved past these things and signed up because I thought I did my homework and knew more than the Crunch Fitness State College worker: both of which are true. I still got scammed though.

For those looking to join Crunch Fitness State College, I would suggest you read the fine print of the membership contract during sign-up for 1-2 hours while a Crunch Fitness State College worker awkwardly sits next to you and may claim to "summarize" the contract, if you know what I mean. That's one hell of a customer experience.

To Fitness Ventures LLC and Brian Hibbard (owner of Crunch Fitness State College), reputation and respect are important in business. Customer opinions matter. There is a reason for all of the negative reviews. While you may profit in the short-term, I am willing to bet you will experience hardship and legal trouble in the long-term. Be better.

If you are a Penn State Student. DO NOT TRY This fitness! !

Reason for not choosing this fitness center:

1. Trap to attract you to join their membership:
During March when they firstly open, they claim there is huge discount for new membership which is 19.99. They will increase their membership price after your second month! They are quite unclear about your future billing. For a three months membership, I actually paid 108 dollar

2. Poor customer Services System: In May, I am travel internationally for several months and I will move to an other state later. So I would like to cancel membership and pay the outstanding balance. They said I can not cancel membership online and I have to come to the desk where I registered my membership. I was shocked, As a national chains fitness brand, Your system even could not do this simple job? So I have to cancel my membership several months later when I come back to State College, which also incur additional fee when I am not here.

3. Strange billing : Funny part comes, After I ultimately cancel my membership several days ago, Yesterday, They billing me with a 22.8 dollar charge for something I don’t know!

4. Aggressive calling ,Texting , and mailing to me!

I don’t know who train their customer representatives this strategy but they call countless call and message to me when I am travel internationally! Sometimes they call me whether I want a private training session or sending me email every day for the balance I don’t even know?

As a PhD student at Penn State, I was initially drawn to Crunch Fitness for its variety of activities and decent facilities. However, my experience has been deeply disappointing—far worse than any other gym I’ve joined in my lifetime.

In early May 2025, before leaving for a summer internship in California, I visited the gym in person to pause my membership and reduce my personal training sessions to once per week. The staff assured me that both changes were processed. Unfortunately, while away, I discovered that my account continued to be charged as if no adjustments were made. When I followed up, I was told there was no record of my visit or requests.

This level of mismanagement reflects either serious incompetence by the staff or poor organizational standards by Crunch Fitness as a company. I’ve paused memberships at other gyms before without issue—this was by far the worst experience I’ve had.

If you’re a student or a professional with a tight schedule, I recommend using Planet Fitness or Penn State’s campus gym instead. They’re more reliable and won’t leave you chasing down broken promises.

Purposely misled into $1 down deal just like many others leaving a one star for this location. I was told when I SPECIFICALLY ASKED about the annual fee that I WOULD NOT have to pay it, but months later the only way for me to cancel was to pay that annual fee. I was solicited on the side of the street for this deal and I knew to ask if there would be any other charges. The person signing me up said no. I made sure to ask because I was graduating soon and would have just kept my Planet Fitness membership. Mind you, I never stepped foot into this gym because I was also told the opening date would be January, and it ended up being in March. I couldn't even use the gym anymore because I had shoulder surgery in March (which I knew about before signing up, but I figured using a gym for 2 months for $1 would be nice). This location purposely misleads you and I do not recommend it whatsoever.

I went in to cancel my membership since I was graduating and worked with Menzell. Wicked nice guy and very personable. The staff was really nice and greeted me when I walked in too. However, when I got my cancellation contract, it said my total owed would be $72.98 (as shown in the screenshot). I got a 3-month free trial because I joined before a certain date. I also signed up for the base plan. The annual fee on the contract I signed was $54.99 so I assumed that the rest of the money in the $72.98 would be for like 2-months of payment for the gym. There was an issue with billing so I changed my card in the app and ended up paying $32.99, then I got a call the other day about an outstanding balance. When I went into the app again, it said I owed $72.98 and then less than 10 hours later, it said I owed $82.98. I paid it so it didn’t go up anymore, but on the app it still says I am an active member and now I’ve paid $115 dollars to cancel a gym membership. I went in to cancel April 21st and am still dealing with this. I am hoping it is completely over after the $82.98.

Edit: $54.99 just came out as of June 9th, the $82.98 I paid still hasn’t and still says pending through the app, so we shall see if that comes out of my bank too.

I don’t know what the gym is like because I never used it. This is a billing issue. My friend and I signed up for the one dollar down “deal” in March. We both canceled in person at the gym, before the end of April. I have since been charged the $54 annual fee, and two months worth of memberships and I have not even set foot in the gym. My friend did not get charged anything. On the app, it says that my membership got canceled on the fourth of June, and then the fifth of June, my bank got charged for a $15 membership. Not to mention the amount of texts and calls I got from the gym were outrageous. Even after I canceled it, they still contacted me. Now they’re saying, I owe them $10, for what I don’t know because they’ve been taking money out of my account consistently for the past two months totaling over $70. So be wary of giving them your bank information. You will not get your money back.

Workers went around to students in the cafeteria on campus and would not leave after all three students said no countless times. They would not leave until the students signed up.Then the students were told to just sign up with a credit card number and as long as they do not write the expiration date and CVV, they would not get charged. Students were never given a membership card, paperwork or an email regarding membership. They were not told that they have to go to the gym to pick up a membership card. Two months later, After the semester was over, student gets an email with an outstanding balance of $17.99. Called to cancel membership and was told that you have to either cancel in person or send a letter in the mail. A letter was sent in the mail and membership still was not canceled. Three weeks later get another notice of outstanding balance but now it is $101. Email also stated if this was not paid, they would be turned into collections agency. Crunch was trying to collect funds through the students Venmo account. Not sure how they got access to his Venmo account. Called and spoke to manager. Absolutely awful customer service. All he cared about was getting his money. Now the student is out $101 to this dishonest and fraudulent company. Taking advantage of 18-year-olds. Awful..

The gym itself is nice. However, I was told word for word that when I put $1 down that if I cancelled my membership by the end of the month I wouldn’t be liable for any other charges. Which was a complete lie. Then I go to cancel at the end of the month and now I have to pay for the entire next month and was told again that would be my only charge. And getting charged still a month later for their annual fee that the many people I talked to specifically asking about blatantly left out of the conversation. So don’t be like me, actually read their online contact and be aware that the employees will lie to your face to get more business. Not for nothing I don’t break balls about dumb things but the way that these “salespeople” tell you something completely different than the truth and treat you overall is actually insane.

Listen Crunch Fitness- I thought I got this all straightened out and now you are trying to charge me 54.99 on my credit card! I was also told that I would be reimbursed my monthly fees and that was over three weeks ago! Please just stop. I’m losing weight with all this anxiety you are causing me. Keep your monthly fees and let me keep my 54.99. We are even! Leave me alone!

Never stepped in the gym and am now being told I signed up for a 12 month membership. Was scammed by a commercial business with stands on the road of state college where the employees tell you everything you are signing up for is free with no payment required. Please stay away from this catastrophe of a business

Full of fraud and misrepresentation. They will say and advertise “cancel anytime” but they will not let you cancel until they get the annual fee which is $54. This is a clear misrepresentation and fraud. I was canceling because of leaving State College. They are not letting me cancel until 60 days of membership or I can say until they get paid for annual fee. Once you are in, you cannot cancel until you are charged for monthly fee for two months and annual fee. Don’t fall their trap and read all the agreements and disclosures

I am very frustrated with how they advertised for this new location. They said it was $1 down for the first month and then you pay for the following month. I tried to cancel by calling, left a voicemail, and even sent an email and I got no response. I just now got an answer 2 weeks later of calling and said I now have to pay a $50 annual fee on top of the monthly payment and have to call back at the end of the month again to cancel. How am I supposed to cancel at the end of the month when I don’t know if someone will answer the phone. I am a college student and cannot afford to pay over $75. I also tried to use their tanning beds, but they were shut down for almost two weeks, so I didn’t even get to use the membership as intended.

The gym itself is nice. Unfortunately I had a major issue with how the general manager, Menzell, and another worker, Avery, handled my situation today. I was supposed to get a month for free because I signed up before they opened on March 31st. Supposedly my name was never put on the list to get this promotion so I ended up paying for April and now May. They told me they couldn’t do anything about it. Menzell and Avery laughed about it right in front of me saying they wanted “free lunch.” Just truly bad customer service and one easy way to have people switch gyms.

Never even stepped foot in the gym and got charged for a membership. Got lied to by a kid in downtown state college. He told me I'd get a free month and would not be charged after. Got charged $26 today and I've never picked a membership or confirmed I wanted to be a member. Great job stealing my money!

Zero stars. I purchased this membership for the tanning benefit. I went to the club 4 times - 3 of those times, there was no power to the tanning units so I could not use them. I sent an email 2 weeks ago to the club to cancel my membership and never got a response. I called the club last week and left a message to cancel my membership and got no response, and I went in person on Sunday to cancel. An employee named David took my information down and said that someone would cancel it the following day. I never heard back and today my credit card was charged.

Crunch Fitness is a great gym overall! The equipment is all new and well-maintained, and I especially like the group fitness classes—they’re fun, high-energy, and a great workout. The only issue is the temperature—it’s pretty warm throughout the gym and in the group fitness room. The cycle studio is the only spot that feels nice and cool. With summer coming, I can’t imagine how hot it might get. Definitely feels like the AC could use a boost. A cooler environment would make the workouts even better.

One other thing I’ve noticed: sometimes there’s a big group of trainers hanging out in the corner being a little loud or rowdy. It can feel a bit awkward....

Overall a great Gym! All the equipment is up to date which is really nice, compared to other gyms i’ve went to. One thing I will say that needs to be added is more Cable Stations. Most of the time I have to wait and wait for them to be free, and there are times where I didn't even get a chance to use them at all. I do hope you guys consider adding more at some point!

I’ve been working out at gyms before it was common for women to workout (nearly 40 yrs), and I have been to many different gyms through the years, both as a member and through travel. This is a great gym, it offers everything you would need, including the latest in fitness equipment.
I love their dedicated deadlift platforms and squat racks…….they have an abundance of weights, including bumper plates and dumbbells (as well as regular plates). Being that they are new I am assuming that a lot of the new equipment still needs to be fine tuned as there is typically several pieces of equipment out of service at a time. I am hopeful this will change considering this is all new equipment.
I don’t typically take classes but they have an amazing room dedicated for classes, as well as a dedicated cycle room. They also have a large separate area for sled pull, TRX and various functional workouts.
I have a premier membership but it’s highly impressive that even as a basic member you have access to their sauna, which is located in their very nice and modern locker rooms. I highly recommend this place.
As a bonus, their staff is always friendly and seemingly available to offer help if needed.

The selection of Hammer Strength machines is top notch. It’s a shame they couldn’t have similarly invested in nicer squat racks and bench press stations to match. But overall the layout of the weight floor and selection of equipment is really nice. Tons of dumbbells and cardio machines too. The Jacob’s Ladder and farmer carry machines are also awesome to have.

However, the gym is already very dirty. It’s clear the floors of the gym don’t get cleaned, and the men’s locker room and sauna is often filthy. The paper towels for wiping machines down are also super cheap, and little pieces of them get all over the gym floor.

Was really excited for the sauna, but it doesn’t get very hot, and again, it’s usually dirty.

Overall a nice new gym, but unfortunately they are neglecting the cleanliness just a few weeks in.

Warning: Be cautious when dealing with Crunch Fitness. If you're considering signing up, use a prepaid card or be prepared to cancel your primary card altogether; they make it extremely difficult to cancel memberships. There are reports of them sending debt collectors after former members and using aggressive tactics to extract every cent. Some have even been pressured into signing up for classes and personal training they didn’t want. Just search "Crunch Fitness scam" and you’ll find plenty of first-hand accounts of their shady practices.

This location was supposed to open in July 2024. It began advertising in April 2024 saying they were set to open over the summer, then confirming July. They then pushed it back to “fall.”

There has still been no progress or word on opening, and it is almost October. They had a “pre” sign up in the spring, but obviously the memberships can’t be used if the place isn’t open. So far, seems like a waste of t ime. The people who were excited to join 6 months ago have found other options.
