Why does the Scranton YMCA close EVERYTIME a snowflake is forecasted. Yet every other gym and business stays open? At least have enough courtesy for the members to notify them in advance. Or at least open for a half day. Even though the Y is a non profit members still pay the most heftiest membership fees than any other gym in the county. At least have the courtesy to value members. Yet the Y continues to reduce hours and raise prices?

Terrible experience. The older woman at the front desk told my wife today that she had to pay a 15$ fee to get in the pool with our son who has a year membership that we just paid 350$ for. Our son is 5 years old and cannot utilize the pool by himself as he cannot swim yet. On top of that we also pay for private swim lessons for him but he does like to go on the inflatable slide after his lessons and he needs an adult with him in the pool. This woman fought with my wife saying she needed to buy a membership in order to get in the pool or pay the 15$ fee every weekend. Absolutely unprofessional and greedy. Asked for a cancellation of the membership for him and she proceeded to give even more attitude. Terrible experience absolutely awful and disrespectful.

The weight room is really nice and now that itβs updated itβs worth the money. My complaint is with the pool staff. Any time I bring my son there to swim they are so rude, and they talk down to you instead of at you. Iβm here right now and was told by the front that open swim starts at 12. When I took him to the pool the attitude we got and told 1230 to me was unacceptable.

My 20 month old son has been going to the ELC at the greater Scranton YMCA since he was 8 weeks old. I trust the staff as if they were family. I work a rapid 2/2/3 rotation so there are days I only get to see my boy for a few minutes. Having the BRIGHTWHEEL app grants me the privilege of seeing pictures of him and what he is up to throughout his day. My only wish is that I had two more hands so I can give them four thumbs up!!!

Its obvious through experience that the YMCA will close wrongfully and not uphold a willingness to maintain a reliable facility for their paying members. Many examples, but two are at the top:
1) I once arrived at the YMCA to use the weightlifting room, but at the desk I was told that the entire facility was closed. I was told this by a man with a beverage in hand and a party in the background enjoying live music. 2) The YMCA closed ALL day for 1β of snow that arrived at approx. 8am. I arrived at my usual workout time, 6 pm, and the facility was closed with a perfectly cleared parking lot. Not a drop of snow anywhere (the roads were perfect -literally perfect- since 10am).
But hey, they are still getting every memberβs dues on the first of each month, right?
*Edit - Response to owner* - this has nothing to do with the YMCAβs system of notification performance - which is proficient. It has everything to do with the YMCAβs lack of upholding a dependable and open facility; i.e. hosting a party in the lobby and canceling on paying members. As for the snow instance, the roads were never bad. 1β of snow at 8am does not call for closure on the whole day no matter which way you see it. Itβs disappointing as a member, and this is common chat among other members.

Not feeling the vibe here for some reason they never clean the basketball courts, and half time itβs being used by another group that has nothing to do with basketball.
They also raised the day pass to 15$ from 10$ why? The membership is already overpriced.
Very disappointing how money hungry people can be in this world seriously itβs not worth it life is about helping others especially in your own community.

I recently had the chance to swim at the YMCA while it's undergoing renovations. While the current construction makes navigating a bit of a challenge (getting from the pool to changing areas, etc.), it didn't detract from the overall experience.
The pool itself was lovely, and the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. Everyone I encountered was very welcoming.
I'm excited to see the completed renovations and experience the full potential of this YMCA.

Don't waste your money. Especially if you have kids. The pool is always closed. They don't notify you when the pool is closed even when signed up for text messages, social media updates, etc. The playground is closed to camps. Basically a huge waste of money.
Update: 10/13/24. Yet again the pool was closed with no notification. Yea they called me last time and said the aquatics director was on vacation. This time they said there was no excuse and would cancel my membership if I'm having issues. I'm not having issues with my membership I'm having issues with the fact that people can not do a job they are paid for. Drive to Carbondale don't waste time with Scranton. Two times in 2 months pool closed with no notification. And I've only tried to go twice in the past 2 months, so I'm guessing it happens more often than they will admit. And all these comments from the YMCA saying they want to hear more about your experience is not true. If you keep bringing up the same unresolved issues they will suggest you cancel your membership.

Did summer camp here as a kid. Camp leaders/adults would yell and berate us for the littlest of things. One violently grabbed my wrist and dragged me to the area where everyone else was (for context, I had anxiety issues at the time.) My biggest disappointment: if any of us broke the littlest rule, they made us play a game called βDead Fishβ where we would have to lay on the floor motionless with no talking or sound for 30 minutes. I have some friends who did the same program (whom I didnβt know at the time) and described the exact same experiences. There are far more better and appropriate summer camps for your kids than this one. If a lawsuit is applicable, expect it on the paper.

We love our local Y! From swim lessons and family swim time, to child watch for mom time, to camp in the summer, we rarely are away for more than a few days. The staff is friendly and kind, and the facility is beautiful. The family membership fee has been a steal for the way we use all of its features. Donβt wait to join, itβs so worth it!

*** I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE ****
I just had the worst experience and case of malicious compliance at this location last Saturday.
Me and my 8year old daughter went there for a play date with another mom who had a membership for her daughter there. But because we were there 1 hour past the βday passβ allowed time, the front desk lady stopped us from going in very rudely and in a very condescending way, even after the other mom who was with me asked nicely if she could just let the girls in this one time. So finally the mom said okay they wouldnβt use the pool and just the playground in that case, she kept loudly pointing my daughters pool towels as if we were lying and saying we would need to buy a membership. So when I asked how much the membership was she tells me $69 and when the other mom that was with me tried to intervene saying I could buy one just fo my daughter for $24 she kept ignoring her and mentioning the $69. Finally when I ask about the $24 I ask if it works in most clubs since we live in Carbondale too. She said yes but we would need to use the one in Dunmore 51% percent of the time in order for us to be allowed there. And she kept repeating 51% of the time. Even after I said her dad lives in Scranton and could take her there. By this point my daughter was extremely embarassed and eyes filled with tears and just wanting to leave. So I just apologized to the other mom (who also happened to have an accent and not be white) and left with a humiliated and traumatized 8 year old girl who just wanted to use the pool with her friend after a 30 minute drive.
I canβt help to think and feel like we were treated this way because of our accent and skin color, which is really sad being that this is supposed to be a Christian club?
Even my daughter said she will never be going back there again.
Do better YMCA Dunmore

Everything is cool never too packed, but I primarily bought a membership to play basketball here and the court can get pretty slippery. I went for a week and everyday the court was dusty and slippery. I could literally see dust balls in the corners of the gym and when wiping my hand on the court my finger tips were visible dusty. Idk if the dust comes from the air vents or they just donβt clean their court. If they clean the courts please do a better job or even allow people to clean it themselves with a janitor broom. Please fix this problem someone can get hurt.

I'm getting ready to join a new gym, and the YMCA was my first stop. The ladies at the front desk seemed helpful and answered all my questions. Then they did a walk thru with me to show me all the different services the YMCA offers. They have a pool, whirle pool, steam room, heavy weight room with all the different machines for chest, legs and back. Also another room filled with all different kinds of machines. Also they have a indoor track to run or walk. If you are into sports, they do have a basketball gym, and spin classes. What I was interested in, but it's not yet there, soon they said, is the virtual golf simulator. They have a big parking lot, so never looking for a spot. Seems pretty clean, and they do offer lockers and towels for fees. I would recommend this YMCA. It's right off the highway 81, so if you travel it's a quick stop. Also the prices are very affordable, I would do the family packages because they get you a better deal.

If you are black or Hispanic, you will be discriminated against. I am not the only one who thinks so, two of my friends noticed it and quit to. One example of this is the way a maintenance lady was cleaning the exercise mashines that my friend was using right after seeing him cleaning behind himself. As soon as I get in the pool area, I notice that the life saver gyus are chichatting with each other finding a way to get me out, one of the things they do is tell me there is going to be an activity and I need to leave. But I look around, and there are about 10 people, all white, who have nothing to do with any activity.

There is absolutely no space for adults to swim for working out
I could not imagine that this state is full of people who don't appreciate swimming as one of healthiest exercises.
But yet ymca only thinks of profits. And it turned into kindergarten. I came from the job 20-30 minutes earlier to swim and enter in hope if it is still possible , guess what, the amateur swimming team coach closed door in advance, even though that it was not their time for another 40 minutes.
Thank ymca no thank you.
P.s. those kids mostly talk and don't workout at all.
Update, changed the schedule, extended it a little. Nice !

Always a lap lane available from morning to evening unlike other places that have time restrictions. Loretta the manager was extremely helpful with my membership. Rediculous! Called and asked ahead of time what time they close and the receptionists don't even give me the correct time. I pack my two kids up to go swimming and bring them all the way there just so they tell me they close in 10 min and that the previous receptionist was wrong. Then acted like it was my fault and was just so rude saying I should've googled it. When google just says 4 for the whole building so THATS WHY I CALLED. Didn't even feel bad for the kids. Well thanks ymca! Thanks for ruining two kids day thinking they're going swimming and thanks to giving that kind of trouble to a mother.

I had my child in one of their swimming classes for less than a months before I pulled her out of the class. The swimming teachers would constantly act afraid to help or even touch my child. My child was continuously separated from the other kids in her class and was given less attention and support than the rest of her peers. Towards the end things became so bad that other mothers would approach me to give me and my child support as they picked up on the clear alienation my child was facing. My child is very well behaved and a fast learner, so I did not understand why she was being treated so differently. The only explanation I could come up with is that the fact that my child was the only African American child in her class. I was hoping that we as a society progressed past these issues, but my heart was broken when out of three instructors all would act uncomfortable to engage with my child. I paid for my daughters swimming classes up front but she didnβt even get to attend all the classes she paid for as I was worried she was starting to pick up on the discomfort her instructors felt towards her. All I ask is that this establishment does better.

I recently signed up for membership on 10/15, the rep who signed me up was very "effiecent" in getting me signed up. She repeatly told me that unlike all the other fitness places in the area they had more to offer and NO hiddenfees, she repeated this 3-4 times during the sign up process that should have been my first red flag!!!! I signed up went to go to the locker room to change and saw the towel person doing laundry and asked for a towel. I was told I would have to go back up to the front desk to talk with them. I went to front desk and spoke to the rep who had signed me up, she proceeded to tell me there was a $20/mnth towel service fee, so I jokingly said guess that is not a "hidden" fee.. She added it to my account...fine I went an dworked out. Facilities for acutally working out are ok. The next evening I arrived and checked in one of the ladies at the from desk rudely told me that they were not FREE. They costs a $1/ day. I said is that not covered under my monthly service fee? She again rudley said, I do see that on your account. After a few minutes one of the other reps found that I did indeed have the service and I went on my way. Annoyed but just wanted to work out. This time when I got to the locker room, there were almost no lockers to be foudn without a lock on them, the couple I did locate without locks were clearly being used by others members. I asked one of the other guys there what the deal was with lockers and he said I had to get assigned on eby the front desk , so back up to the front desk I went. The same rude reps were there, I ask to be assigned a locker and they informed me those are not free either... So by that point yes I was not in the greatest mood. I asked what does a locker cost? The rep then just keep telling me I could either use a locker in the hallway but that I could not leave anything in a locker over night if I did not pay for one. So I again asked now for the 3x how much a locker costs and she just keep repeating that stuff could not be left in a locker if it was not paid for... Finally I said what DOES a locker cost??? oh well I do not know, she said, do you want a large one or a small. At that point I said cancell my membership. I filled out their cancellation form and left. The next day they charged my debit card for the membership and the towel service. Now after almost 2 weeks I have left numerous messages for Robert the head of membership services and James Thomas the director without any response. This morning I left a message for one of the people at the Wilke Barres offices and have npot heard back from anyone.
It turely is not about the costs, if they had told me upfront it was $100/ month sure ok, but the fact that the first rep made such a stink about NO "Hidden"fee and then the other front desk people being so rude I would not have batted an eye. However to lie and then be so rude does not work for me. I have been in sales my enter career and If I ever treated or spoke to a customer like they did I would be terminated. So moral of the story is, ask for ALL costs you can possible image they could charge for upfront and then hope you never have to deal with the front desk again.

Great place. Machines in locker room area if you don't feel comfortable working out in the open area. Classes offered. Friendly and helpful staff.

The new family changing area is wonderful (great idea, esp for parents who take both girls and boys for swimming lessons). They have great programs for kids. The older woman who sits right by the doors is a bundle of NEGATIVITY. I sat in that room waiting for someone for a bit, and every time the room cleared (of customers) she would turn to the girl next to her and complain non stop about how poorly she is treated, how low her pay is, how much she can't stand customers asking her questions (ESP about the racquetball court!!), how no one stays there for too long, etc etc etc. Non stop negativity. I felt bad for the nice young girl who had to listen to it. How bad can a YMCA be to work at ?! Looks like it could be FUN for people with the RIGHT ATTITUDE.

Enjoyable. Unique in relation to local gyms - pool, steam room, hot tub, etc.

We went there as visitors to go to the pool for the kids. The swimming area for the younger kids were very small and limited, the young white woman who was one of the life guards was so rude and racist. She also screamed at my child (who's mixed) but not other kids when they were moving a little too fast on the slippery floor or wibit. She looked so miserable and if she had an issue with my child she should've addressed me, I would never raise my voice at someone else's child. Never returning.

Great place but had to change from 5 to 3 stars due to the administration not having a clue where the money I pay each month is going to.

I look forward to seeing the YMCA staff and people working out in the wellness room every Monday through Wednesday for my workouts. I have heard great things about the Zumba and Spin classes and am looking forward to trying them soon!

I called to set my 2 year old up for their daycare program. I work Monday thru Friday 8-5 but my husband works on a swing shift, which means that one week he works Monday, Thursday and Friday and then he next week he works Tuesday and Wednesday and it rotates like that all year. We have his schedule for the whole year so I wanted to sign him up for their three day a week option and was told that they couldn't accommodate my schedule because he wouldn't be going the same three days every week. I'm actually really surprised and disappointed that they weren't willing to work with me, especially because both me and my son are members.
