They no longer have a pool or smoothie bar. But they do have a basketball court. They did a bunch of updated in 2025, more equipment, squat racks for days. Looks great!

Total scam. When you sign up, they only tell you about the basic monthly fee. But when your card gets charged, it’s never that number. They sneak in extra charges like towel service and Les Mills — which are optional — without asking or explaining. The info is buried in pages of fine print, so you’d never notice. That’s straight-up deceptive.

When I went back to ask for a refund, the staff were rude and arrogant, basically saying “you signed, so too bad.” Zero transparency, zero accountability. They trap you with hidden fees and then refuse to make it right.

When I first started hands down 5 stars. As I love the atmosphere of this location and would highly recommend to anyone, I wouldn’t recommend signing up at this location. My suggestion is to go to a different location to sign up and then come here to workout. I originally signed up back in June for a very reasonable price of $30 month for a single plan for 1 location only. Also paid for a Pilates membership at this same location for an additional fee. Just last week I wanted to add my 16 yr old son to my membership, not including the Pilates membership. I understood that I had to change to a family plan but to now have to pay more than double the amount to add a minor is ridiculous. So to do so, I proceeded with the family membership. Paid an initiation fee AGAIN and proceeded with canceling my Pilates membership in which I am now going to through a different company for my Pilates. At the end of the day, they lost money with me but again great location to actually workout at in.

The Pilates here is amazing and the instructors are awesome… on the other hand, the management is absolutely horrible. The general manager and personal training manager are highly unprofessional and downright creepy, beware if you are a girl who is good looking and in shape, THEY WILL HIT ON YOU AND BE WEIRDOS.
On the other hand, Zarien, who does sales is awesome and very knowledgeable and professional. I would only recommend this gym if you go see him or do the Pilates.
In addition, the gym is not nice. They claim to be “the best gym in Pittsburgh” but it’s actually gross. They’ll try charging you $10 extra for towels that are never clean, they don’t have a pool, and the sauna is like always broken. That $49 or $59 a month is not it… don’t waste your money. If you do happen to stop in to sign up, see Zarien!! He will be upfront and honest with you about costs, and not try to make you feel bad for not joining. Besides that, it’s pretty bad.

This gym is always filthy. The few months the Southside location was closed and they moved that team to this gym was the only time the place was clean. This morning, for example, the gym is dead as a doornail (extremely rare because usually the gym is so busy you have to wait for benches/equipment) and yet the trash cans in the locker room are over flowing onto the floor, debris and dirty towels all over the place, sauna floor is disgusting and muddy, and the shower stalls are filthy. I only saw 2 of the far-too-few sanitizing stations on the gym floor having wipes in them. It's just insane to me that this gym relies solely on its size and location, charges out the wazoo, and yet is consistently so disgustingly dirty that it makes my skin crawl.

I was encouraged to sign up for Pilates class. I did. I was disappointed because, there was little to no introduction to the equipment and I found that it is easy to injure yourself without more knowledge. The young person who instructed the class was referencing her phone throughout out the session which seemed a bit disturbing as I was not sure if I was completing the exercises properly. It felt like LA just invested in this equipment and need to push it out without a thoughtful plan. There MUST be a beginners class at least once ir twice monthly that everyone should attend. This protects LA Fitness and the consumer. This class should cover equipment and techniques. Using this equipment properly should not be rushed which is what it felt like. I am a former teacher and was very disappointed at the lack of instruction here. Btw, the instructor never introduced herself. Will I sign up, NEVER!

Signed up through active and fit when I got to the club the management tried to get me to pay for another whole membership even though I had already paid. The General Manager is rude and told me they don’t accept insurance covered gym memberships. I happily canceled my plan the same day and joined one of their competitors. Also, if you’re trying to play basketball their court is about 1/2 the size of a real court.

*Update*
Added a star after they finally went through the update, about 2 years after my first review. New machines and equipment are adequate, and they made some positive design improvements to better use the space. Better, but Premium elements -- including pool and smoothie bar -- are still gone and unused. They could do way more to optimize the space, which is getting increasingly crowded with the update. Still keeping old review below for transparency and a note of caution.

+++++++++++++++++++++

-- TL;DR --
Pros: a cheap monthly fee is attainable, convenient location, most staff is fine/friendly, adequately sized space

Cons: inadequate cleaning supplies, increasingly old and broken-down equipment, steady and consistent decline in quality and amenities

-- Longer writeup --
A year and a half ago, I (hesitantly) signed on long-term at a reasonable discounted monthly rate, cheaper than other large gyms in the city. As I did so, the manager promised a lot of renovations planned for "a few months from now," including a massive overhaul/upgrade of the space and equipment. In the span of that time:
- The air conditioning broke down for weeks in the middle of summer
- Multiple machines broke down for long stretches, without repair
- Multiple water fountains went in and out of service for long stretches
- The TVs - all of them - stopped working
- The smoothie bar permanently closed down
- The pool (closed pre-2020) never reopened

In that time, nothing was upgraded except for the replacement of a small handful of barbells and weights.

The staff is friendly enough and as expected from a major chain gym. The equipment, though aged and rough, meets the minimum requirements. But buyer beware: do not expect its "Signature" label to come close to a premium quality. Instead, just expect a slow-and-steady decline in fit and finish. As such, make completely sure that you do not overpay.

I’ve been a member here for a long time. I love this gym for the layout, lighting and variety of areas and machines. The members here are always pleasant and never obtrusive at least in my experience. The front gym staff is always friendly and helpful. There are some very kind and pleasant men who work here. Last Sat 7/26, I had just come from my awful FedEx encounter and the gym front guys turned things around for me and made me smile and feel so happy again. Truly a contrast of customer service on my Saturday haha. Give these guys a promotion!

Unfortunately the pools at most LA Fitness locations seem to be getting scrapped, which is so disappointing for those of us who love a good swim for cardio - there aren’t enough indoor pools at gyms in the Pittsburgh region. The pool at this location collapsed - that’s on the builder and it was too expensive to litigate. But still, really disappointed since that was a big draw for me signing up at this gym. Now there’s just a big unused area of space where the pool used to be. It’s a shame!

Other than that this gym is one of my favs in the area! It’s not too crowded or bright, though I do always try to avoid heavy traffic times here. Occasionally machines will be down for a time, which is frustrating, but I think they’re getting better about being more prompt with repairs. They renovated last year and I’m sad they turned the cardio movie room into a meathead weight room. Cardio in a quiet dark room while watching a movie was such a unique and inclusive element to have at this gym for people who want to recharge their batteries while simultaneously working out.

I work out with a service dog and I juggle as part of my workout. My dog just had a surgery and I have to carry him up stairs.

A manager at the club says I have to workout up a set of stairs in a space with a ceiling too low to juggle under. It takes 2 trips to carry my equipment up the stairs and a third trip to carry my dog.

I have been working out here for 3 months without issue. I guess this is just a club for normal people.

Updated Review – LA Fitness Signature Club at Bakery Square
May 27, 2025. My initial rating of the 5-star is now 3-stars. Here's the reasons.

As a Signature member of LA Fitness since 2017, I’ve experienced the highs and lows of this Bakery Square location firsthand. My initial excitement after last year’s renovations has unfortunately started to wane—not because the facelift wasn’t appreciated, but because it seems to have covered up lingering, deeper issues that continue to go unaddressed.

When I first returned in September 2024 after the two-week renovation, I was genuinely impressed. The brighter lighting, modern design, and reorganized floor layout gave a strong first impression. The dedicated lower body room, new cardio equipment upstairs, improved locker room, and the revamped ambiance all felt like a long-overdue reset.

But fast forward to today, May 27, 2025, during a walk-through by regional and local club management, it became clear that many underlying problems remain unresolved. I took the opportunity to voice my dissatisfaction directly to the regional manager about the long-term, out-of-service equipment still littering the club floor—an eyesore and inconvenience in what’s supposed to be a Signature location.

His response? “Get on it,” said dismissively to the on-site team as he moved on. No clipboard. No interest in specific details. Just a blanket directive with no follow-up or engagement. I pointed out that these issues—clearly marked by "Out of Order" signs—have persisted for over two years. A member shouldn’t have to act as the quality control agent to ensure repairs are made.

While the aesthetics of the club have improved, function is just as important—if not more so—than form. The closed swimming pool, which hasn’t operated since 2019, should no longer be advertised as a working amenity. The reality is that many of us joined this specific location because of the pool. Its continued closure, without transparency or updates, is misleading.

Suggestions for LA Fitness Management:

1. Equipment Repair & Replacement: Establish a public timeline for repairing or replacing long-broken machines. At the very least, remove those that are clearly out of commission and take up space.

2. Pool Communication: Stop advertising the pool as operational if there are no plans to reopen it. Honesty builds trust.

3. Accountability During Walkthroughs: Have managers document feedback during walkthroughs. Members are paying for premium access—Signature clubs should deliver Signature service.

4. Maintenance Transparency: Post maintenance updates monthly. Members want to know what's being done behind the scenes to maintain the club’s standards.

5. Feedback Follow-Up:Create a member advisory panel or suggestion box that's actually reviewed by decision-makers. Right now, feedback feels like it disappears into a void.

To be clear: I want to see this club succeed. The renovation showed that LA Fitness can invest in improvements when it chooses to. But now it’s time to maintain that momentum—not just with paint and Pilates, but with reliable, working equipment and attentive service.

Until then, I remain cautiously optimistic—but watching.

They told me that cancellation will be very easy, the reality is the opposite. I purchased a month to month membership with Pilates. When I tell them to cancel 30 days before my desired date due to relocate, they tried to persuade me to purchase another month for the 5 extra days I will have in Pittsburgh. For my partner, the situation is even more ridiculous. He purchased a one-month membership with Pilates add-on, and made it very clear that we will move out of Pittsburgh after a month. Today we discovered that after his one-month gym membership ended, LA fitness is still charging the Pilates add-on because they claimed it to be “recurring”. What a joke, you need a gym membership to do Pilates, but they don’t need your active gym membership to charge pilates add-on. If LA fitness doesn’t have its financial chart ready for Pilates, don’t get into this business. Get ready to deal with the ugly cancellation arguments if you are going to get a membership with them.

This facility is nice. They try to keep things clean, it isn't too crowded in the mornings, good equipment, etc. I don't care for LA Fitness as an institution, because I feel that they don't care about their customers. I have paid $275 in the first two months for my gym access that is supposed to be $55/month. They nickel and dime you for everything they can, try to get you with hidden fees, etc. My first month getting a membership, I pay $55/month for nationwide access, they made me pay for first and last month (so whenever I do decide to cancel, I guess I need to plan this to be a month or two in advance), there was a large initiation charge, an annual fee of $59.99 that no told me about, if I want towels they charge me an extra $10/month (which they never even have any clean anyways), and I'm sure they will get me in other ways too. So I've spent just about $275 on LA Fitness in the first two months just to get into the door a few times.

If I cancel, and restart again someday, I will have to pay $275 for the first two months again I suppose. But don't worry, you can freeze your account for $10/month, sounds great right? Ok, that's dandy but the freeze doesn't start until your next billing cycle. So if you want this month off, the freeze doesn't kick in until you are charged again. So you better plan that carefully. Also, yeah you can't freeze through the app. That would make it too easy for you, so log-in on a computer to do that or call. LA Fitness wants to get as much money as they can out of you, with hidden fees and making everything hard for you to do. Initiation fees, annual fees, towel fees, and whatever else they will do in the future. They say it's $55/month, but yeah right...

Also don't let them get you with the free 3 day trial. It's actually two days. You get that day, and the next day, on day 3 they charge you for $138.98, for first month, last month, initiation fee, and whatever else they call it. They take your card number to start the trial, sit you down and talk to you for 30 minutes getting all of your info, try to explain their confusing plans and fee structure, and have you make a decision on your payment structure just to get your "free trial", etc.. So if you don't call them at the end of day 2, you are getting charge a non-refundable huge amount. And they know that you probably won't call them in two days because their offices will be closed after 6pm in bakery square, and after all, you think you have 3 days to think about it. This is just another terrible chain in the USA that tries to milk you for all you have - small gyms don't treat you like this.

There is not a lot of circulation in the building due to lack of fans in the free weight area. This review is specifically for the personal training program at LA Fitness, not the gym itself. While I understand that personal training is separate from the gym, my experience with the program was so negative that it has completely soured my view of LA Fitness.

A year ago, I expressed interest in personal training at LA Fitness. I was excited about my fitness goals and decided to sign up for a package, despite it being slightly outside of my budget. I was told I had to commit to a six-month contract with no other options. I was also told that my trainer would first assess my fitness, establish a baseline, set goals, and track progress in a book. I was sold on the idea of a data-driven approach to personal training, with the promise that I would be able to see clear results.

The training itself was fine, but the promises were never fulfilled. There was no assessment, no goal-setting, and no progress tracking. My trainer didn’t track any of my progress. Instead, I showed up, followed the exercises given to me, and left. I had no idea if I was actually making progress, but I liked my trainer and decided to stick with it.

The problems began when my Apple Card flagged the $320 charge as fraudulent. The charge came through labeled simply as “la fitness” at 3 a.m. with no other details, which looked suspicious. I approved the charge, and the money left my account, but the following day, I was locked out of the app and unable to schedule sessions with my trainer. LA Fitness claimed I hadn’t paid for the month, even though I had proof that the $320 had been deducted from my account.

After several phone calls, I went to the gym in person to resolve the issue. Despite offering to pay the balance on the spot, the staff insisted on me filling out a credit card authorization form, granting LA Fitness blanket permission to charge my card. I was pressured into signing the form, and after over an hour of confusion between two managers, I left the gym without a resolution.

The issue wasn’t resolved until much later, when I was able to access my account again. However, the very next month, the same charge came through at 3 a.m., flagged as fraudulent again. Once again, I had to go through the process of proving the charge and reactivating my account. The staff was just as unhelpful and confused as before.

At this point, I began to feel that LA Fitness’s personal training program was a scam. After begging the manager to cancel my account after my six months were up, I was assured it would be handled.

However, after six months, I was charged the $320 again. This time, my bank did not flag the transaction, and the payment went through. I called LA Fitness, and the first staff member apologized and promised a refund. After a week with no refund, I called again, only to be told by another manager that I had never canceled my account. A week later, a third manager admitted the cancellation had not been processed, and the refund was finally issued after weeks of follow-up on my end.

Overall, my experience with LA Fitness’s personal training program has been frustrating, with poor communication, disorganization, and a lack of professionalism. I would not recommend the program to anyone, and I believe it is not worth the investment.

It's not like I'm going to cancel my membership, but there are also a certain number of issues I have with this place.
It used to be a super nice club, but since covid they've been lacking. From things like the pool and smoothie bar closed (which is annoying but whatever) there are machines which have been broken for months, and, even though one of the perks of a membership here being towel service, they never have any available.
They just recently painted and brought in some new weight machines, but it still has so many issues.

THE WORST!!!!! NOT WORTH $49.99 A MONTH!!! I signed up at The Southside location, when I was reassured by "N"(who is a Membership Manager and has been with the company for 5yrs) that this location has a pool. They have a pool. He just INTENTIONALLY did not mention that the pool IS PERMANENTLY CLOSED. Of course he had to know that, if he has been employed with the company that amount of time. Then again, commission is more worthy than INTEGRITY. The basketball court is incredibly small. They closed last Sept to do "upgrades". Swapped old outdated equipment around and took the ceiling fans out and took out some cardio equipment. Towels are rarely available. Now adding Pilates, for $100 a month EXTRA!!! How is this a SIGNATURE CLUB?!!!!! I need a COMPLETE REFUND ON MERIT!!!!!

I’ve been going here for about 2 years. It’s very mid, but I keep coming back because it is affordable via a discount I get from my health insurance, and it is sort of centrally located on several bus lines.

Cons:
- the men’s locker room is just plain gross
- it gets overcrowded around 5-7pm and you will have to wait for equipment
- they don’t have nearly enough weightlifting equipment, but a huge surplus of cardio equipment. The majority of the time I go, there are not enough dumbbells and I have to wait to use them
- the sauna culture here is whack. Phones, electronics, and shoes in the sauna. Yikes.
- the pool has been closed for the 2 years I’ve been going here, and it looks like they have no plans to fix it. They just did a huge interior redecorating and built a Pilates studio … but no word on the pool.

This gym needs to have it's lease bought out by another company who is willing to put the money into the space. The new "revamp" is sad. Still has tons of decade+ old machines that do NOT work w out of order signs. Layout is now crazy, making it arguably worse than b4 the "reno." New cardio upstairs, which was VERY needed, but no ellipticals w incline. Wasted space in the entry looks terrible -- like a going-out-of-biz/closeout sale at an old Best Buy is about to happen... (Why is there no juice bar here?? All other locations have them?) Also, there is no cohesive look to the place. You can tell what they tried to "refresh" & what was kept all worn out & dated. Ppl in the area would happily pay *more* for a NICE gym... & actually A LOT more bc this one is so terrible. 😥

Friendly staff. Clean facility. They have everything one might need to train. I only saw one machine in need of service. My only knock, and reason for 4 stars, would be that the pool was offline with no date for reopening. Otherwise this is about as good as it gets for commercial gyms, and at a very reasonable price.

Yesterday morning as I was checking in at my local gym I was harassed by an employee at the front desk. This is the first time I’ve ever experienced such hostility at the check in. She greeted me by saying good morning, I then said hi and she aggressively said “I said Good morning” and I said to her I said hi back and she then started telling me I had negative energy and saying I’m going to get Karma. The one manager in never once stepped in to stop her from continuing to came from behind the counter as if she was coming towards me and went over to the staff on duty. I went in the back to let things cool down came back out to talk to the manager on duty and she stated yelling over to me while I was getting the cooperate number. This was definitely a case of harassment maybe even racism before I don’t know her only seen her a few times when I check in and go on about my day. I’m still waiting on review of camera footage and they have let me know she is not getting fired. No customer should have to get harassed at the time of greeting to force you to speak one way or another it was horrible customer and this is the signature club.

Training. Meet Mr. Will Downing * . I joined LA Fitness and for the first time, I asked for an instructor to help meet weight loss and strength goals. Will, My teacher, judged my performance with a few simple exercises.
He discovered all my weak points and began to isolate those muscles. Each secession he worked different but supporting muscles.
This gave time for the muscles to heal and grow while working new an fresh muscles.
Today I look better, weigh less and have more stamina. I owe so much to his vast knowledge and skill. He's energetic, young, enthusiastic and looking at him, you know he practiced what he teaches. Look for this amazing person (Will Downing) and ask him to guide you to success.

Matthew was so friendly and efficient getting my son signed up with a VIP pass.
The remodel is very nice, but do they ever get input from customers? The cardio machines all have a TV plastered right in your face. Look around and maybe 1 in 8 - 1 in 20 ever turn a TV on. Why not be able to have a distant view? Yes, you can turn them off, but then they are a perfect mirror of your face! Who wants a mirror for 30 minutes of cardio? So you keep rolling your head around so you aren't looking straight ahead. Uncomfortable!! If they looked around they would see the TVs are not of interest anymore. People use their phones!

This really is the worst gym I’ve ever been/ belonged to. More than half of the machines are broken. Areas such as the courts or other rooms are always closed for months being “fixed” but nothing is ever done. Classes are canceled constantly with just a few minutes notice. They’ve said the pool will be fixed for the last year and a half. The bathrooms are disgusting, dirty, hot, & smelly constantly. Do NOT join this gym.

I joined this club primarily because it had a racquetball court. Racquetball has proven to be an essential part of maintaining my mental health for the past year. I walked in today with a court reservation only to find that they’re turning it into a Pilates room. In addition, the AC hasn’t worked for years, and there’s no pool. I’m so frustrated that the only accessible racquetball court in the east end is now gone.

The people that work here are friendly. The facility itself is weirdly a bit depressing and dystopian...pool out of operation since 2020 and seems likely that it's never getting fixed. Only a few kettlebells of various weights laying around different areas, and surprised to find not a single resistance band.

Also, for such a large gym with so many machines, I joined fully expecting to find a prone hamstring curl machine to be able to do eccentric hamstring curls as part of my physical therapy regimen (the seated ones are a pain to do these on), and I did find one, with a "scheduled for maintenance" paper stuck to it that is so worn down, I'm guessing it has been broken for a while and not likely to be repaired anytime soon.

May end up switching gyms just to find one that has this machine in working condition.

If this gym wasn’t a “signature club” I wouldn’t have such high standards but LA Fitness has this as their only designated “Signature Club” in the area. The pool has been closed, the AC has been broken for over a year. The high ceiling fans are never on and if there is one on it’s at the lowest setting possible. Overall the gym is pretty spacious and always free two hour parking in the adjacent garage. There are ample weights and machines but they are extremely dated and never kept in an orderly fashion. I always find myself walking halfway across the gtm looking for something as simple as a 10lb plate. The staff here is friendly but the upper management seems to not be handling the ongoing issues with faulty equipment and air conditioning issues.

LA Fitness Bakery Square continues to be the worst maintained LA Fitness Club in the Pittsburgh Region. Still claims to be a Signature Club. Pool has been closed for 4 years now. Be ready to SWEAT in this very uncomfortable facility. Not sure how this place is getting 5 star reviews because it deserves 0 stars. It’s mind blowing how they claim this is a “signature” la fitness because it’s by far the worst la fitness in the Pittsburgh area. No A/C, the two big ceiling fans have been broken for years, equipment is always broken with a pathetic note that reads “scheduled for service” for months and months at a time, hasn’t had any updates whatsoever since it was urban active, smells terrible at all times, if you’re lucky there might be soap in the dirty locker rooms. I’ve been told they were going to update the gym, but that was 3 years ago so im not making any bets it’s going to happen anytime soon.

Update: 5/2024. It’s only may and already a sauna in here this morning. Management up to their old tricks - no air conditioning and no plans to turn it on anytime soon. Don’t even want to know what it must be like during the evening rush.

Wasted potential. Lots of things that could make this a good gym. High ceilings wide open feel. But the execution is a total fail. Even basic stuff like temperature control is beyond the ability of staff here. It’s about 95 degrees in here right now. A couple of the old guys are looking a little unsteady, Instead of providing air conditioning here in the depths of summer heat, they installed a couple of fans. So I guess they’re committed to no A/C. Many weights/machines are missing or broken for extended periods of time. The bathrooms/showers are filthy and feel like a dirty sauna year round. The pool is closed - apparently permanently, it’s been years since it was open. Weekend hours close early - 6 pm. Basically, there are much better options and I recommend you check them out

let me start by saying the support staff are wonderful. the place is friendly and clean at all times. there is a decent amount of space and equipment. that being said, for how expensive the place is, the pool is always broken. the classes get canceled regularly. there is rarely anything new added. the cancellation process is TERRIBLE. I’ve been trying to cancel my membership for TWO MONTHS, coming in about once a week. Apparently, there is only ONE person who can cancel my plan, and they are never there when I come in. It cannot be cancelled online, and the mail in process can take months. This is beyond frustrating for a gym that is trying to portray itself as luxury. Not worth the price.

I have been working out here for the last year, and unfortunately I cannot recommend this gym. The issues seem to stem at the management level and are probably fixable, but there is no way this gym warrants close to the 4 star rating it currently has on google. I will start off with the pros since there are a few.
PROS:
- Great location. It's around the city and university area which means a nice mix of shops and errands are in walking distance. There's also a diverse mix of people who work out here, and most are pretty chill.
- Staff seem friendly enough (more on this later)
- The equipment is certainly there to get into great shape.
CONS:
- The gym is filthy. The carpet, the bathrooms, the machines, the locker room are all coated with grime and dust. The ventilation is poor within the locker rooms and on the upper floor of the gym.
- If you come during popular hours (after work or on weekends), the gym is far too crowded for my liking.
- The machines are constantly broken, with excessively long repair times. This is especially annoying for the treadmills which everyone wants to use.
- The AC (was) not functional. I have no idea whether they fixed this or not, but it was absolutely boiling during the hotter months, and their solution was to place two fans that really did nothing.
- The pool is nonexistent and there has been no efforts to remedy that during my time here.
- The machine and equipment distribution makes no sense. There are nearly far too many ellipticals, stair machines, and bikes which are seldom in use (except for some classes which I have never seen). Then there are around 10 treadmills (half which are not fully functional) that everyone wants to use. There are two barbell racks for squats, and a small area for deadlifts which is way too crowded even during off-hours.
- The management seems a bit slimy in a used-car salesman way. Coming through frequently and discussions with members gave me the impression that they were pressuring private training sessions and workout plans/classes onto members.
- Related to the point above, the gym seems to cater to older members and inexperienced fitness members.
- Given all of the above, the price point of the gym is FAR too high. I paid $35/month and from the website listing members are probably paying north of $40/month. For whatever reason the gym options in the area suck, but I have had a better gym experience in a 10 dollar a month planet fitness. A competitor gym with competent management in the area would put this location out of business very quickly. Really the location is the only thing saving it right now.

I’ll start off by saying most of staff members are extremely friendly. However, I’ve had more than one bad experience with this gym. Equipment is not clean you can visibly see dirt, sweat ect on machines. Locker room, showers, sauna filthy. Something is always broken. As I was drying off after a shower before work, two guys walked by as a worker was cleaning and one guys said something that I couldn’t make out. The worker proceeded to tell me to cover up and one of the guys who was headed to the sauna thanked him. Extremely unprofessional. What do you expect to see in a locker room. Aside from that there are just too many issues. It’s not worth what you pay for. Needless to say, I’ll will not be returning to this gym. I’m assuming that something is wrong with management since here is a high turnover rate. I’ll travel further to quality gym before using and LA fitness again.

★ 1

Still go here because it’s the only “””affordable””” gym in walking distance but wish I had another choice.

As other reviewers have stated, the machines are constantly breaking down. Try not to come at peak hours because all of them will be filled as a result of half the treadmills being broken. I stopped coming for a few months and the same ones were still adorned with a “service needed” sign when I returned.

Signature gym but none of the perks. Majority of classes are during the midmorning and early afternoon on weekdays so if you have a normal job like me, sorry!

Perhaps the worst, I utilized the “complementary” personal training intro, which I knew going in would be a sales pitch, but jeez Louise it was bad. I went in an hour early on accident and said I could come back in an hour but the guy said no it’s fine but continued to have an attitude with me rolling his eyes the entire time. Took my body fat with a machine that there’s no way is accurate and then when he showed me a graph and asked which % I wanted to get to and I said 18 looked nice, he pointed to 12% and said that’s what I should aim for. As inexperienced as I am with exercise and all of this, I know that for a normal woman, 12% body fat is WAY too low. That’s competing level for bodybuilders - you lose the ability to menstruate even. He then took me through a routine that was clearly meant to be so rough that you’d overestimate how out of shape you are and thus need his services badly. Then the sales pitch. Oh boy. Slimiest guy ever. Tried to guilt trip me with saying his manager needed him to get his numbers up etc etc . Acted like I desperately needed multiple times a week training when I’m not obese or even overweight, I’m a size 2, just skinnyfat

Forget his name but he was an African American male who had a lazy eye - this experience made me reticent to return

Machines are constantly broken. “Scheduled for service” for months. There is also no AC in this gym, you’ll be working out in 85 degrees.

Update - it’s been a week and the AC still isn’t working. Just workout outside it’s cooler.

Update # 2 - since I wrote this review SIX MONTHS AGO the same machines are “scheduled for service”. Don’t come here unless you want to spend your time waiting for working machines to open.

Source: Google

Machines and cardio equipment are consistently broken, which is denoted by “scheduled for service” signs. Ironically, they’ll be listed as “scheduled for service” for weeks at a time or longer without any update or progress. The Penn Avenue LA Fitness location is by far the lowest quality LA Fitness I’ve visited, which is even more disappointing as this location carries a “Signature Club” designation.

Staff are nice, approachable, and capable, so this appears to be an issue at the management level. Would love to see these issues corrected so it can better represent the larger LA Fitness brand.
