I met Michael six years ago when I signed up for the 3-month package for the sole purpose of increasing distance on the golf course. About halfway into that session it became readily apparent that there were much more important reasons to train with him – my overall health. Golf is still primary but not the only focus.

After two sessions establishing some baselines, Michael developed a training program to improve my strength, stamina, posture, mobility and balance. This program also took into account issues with my right shoulder (1,000s of baseballs thrown) and degenerative arthritis in both knees (more on this later).

Here’s a couple of points that stand out in working with Michael:

How he customizes the sessions to our goals and my physical issues noted above. He knows just how far to push and motivate me at the same time. However, if I don’t have to continue, he always supports backing off.

This may be the most important thing for me - communication before, during and after each exercise. This ensures that I am working the targeted muscles correctly. It also leads to his incredible ability to adjust exercises on the fly when my issues impede the exercise, and we still achieve the desired outcome. I admire that he rightly prides himself on this ability. Lastly, at the beginning of each workout he asks how I felt after the last one and takes my feedback into account going forward.

Now, getting back to my knees. The time came in October of 2024 to schedule knee replacement surgery for both knees in February 2025. At the age of 68 the surgeon said I had a fifty-year-old body, and ninety-year-old knees. Michael and I began three-months of intense, grueling training to prepare for the surgery. We pushed way beyond what we did previously. The surgery went well, I was able to completely straighten, then bend my knees to 90 degrees and use a walker in less that twenty hours post-surgery. The physical therapists were very impressed with my rapid initial recovery, and I shared my partnership with Michael. Two days after surgery a new, second physical therapist came into my room and asked the other if I was the patient who worked with a physical trainer!

I was discharged four days after surgery, did in-home therapy, and then outpatient therapy. With my surgeon’s approval I cut my outpatient therapy short and started back with Michael. The first two sessions were new baselines. Approximately one month back and I set a personal record on the leg press machine. I’m fully back into golf and playing without any leg pain.
My overall health continues to improve; my golf swing has been transformed from powerful effort to effortless power.
Now I’m eager to see how far we can go without the impediment of bad knees.

The improvements we’ve accomplished since the very beginning have transformed my life, not just physically but mentally and emotionally. What started as a three-month session has turned into six years, and I see no end to this partnership.

Shortly after I first came to Michael at Mad Fitness we not only weight lifted but I actually was able to help him lift his equipment and we relocated it together for his studio expansion. But I started with all kinds of stiffness and tightness that kept me from being able to do simpler tasks and mostly kept my game from getting better. Getting more flexible and stronger is the promise Michael made me when we started and it’s exactly what he did for me. Over the past month, I had 4 sessions with fitness trainer Michael Katz. After a thorough assessment of my strength, balance, and fitness level, Michael proceeded to teach me what I can do to improve in those areas. On our 3rd session he met me at the gym in my 55+ community. There he showed me how to best use the weights and equipment available to me. He set up a program that I can follow, and provided me with a fitness binder that includes pictures and descriptions of the many exercises I can perform using weights, machines, or just my body. Together we found the right amount of weight that is safe for me to use while building my strength. i go to MAD fitness for weight training but would trust mike with help for any kind of exercise in or out of the gym for every type of person whatever their needs are. i told mike exactly what i was looking to get out of training and he follows through with all of it. Mike is able to explain difficult movements into easy to understand ways that you can use on your own as well as answer all of my questions that I have about exercise or diet. no workout is the same and he challenges you really hard so you get the most out of each workout where you will also have access to equipment you can't use in most gyms like cables with air pressure resistance

Michael takes the time to understand your pain points, and where to improve. I played a lot of golf and baseball growing up, and had shoulder surgery in my early 20's. Now my shoulder gives me a fair amount of pain after I play a round of golf, so I decided to go see Mad Fitness. We talked about the issues I've been having, and ran some diagnostics. After a few short sessions, Mike created a program which I'm using and I'm already feeling less pain and tightness. If you experience sports related pain, or just want to figure out how to improve your golf fitness, Mike's program is great. Mike's father also runs a great driving range and pro shop facility.

I have been losing distance every year as I have gotten older. It was so bad that I could not hit my driver 165 yards. I finally decided something had to be done and I have been seeing Mike at Mad Fit to help improve my strength, balance and flexibility. After two sessions with Mike, I played a round Sunday morning and on the second hole my Sky Caddy measured the drive at 187 yards. I also had drives of 182 & 178 yards. Wow, I’m so glad I started this program and I’m really looking forward to do even better as I continue the exercise program Mike started me on. Michael created an excellent 10 session seasonal exercise routine for me. I am in mid-60s. What impressed me was his sensitivity to provide challenging exercises while not exceeding my capabilities and monitoring closely my pace. Over 10 sessions, we did not repeat any one exercise twice. Michael Katz has been a great personal trainer for me. I came to the gym just out of physical therapy due to surgery for a broken leg. Michael took the time to look at pictures of X-rays and the exercise regiment from my physical therapist in order to understand the limitation of my injury so that he could guide me accordingly. During our sessions Michael adjusted exercises and monitored the pain/stress placed on the area of my injury. He asked about the particular range of motion and strength issues I was encountering and then designed specific exercises to address those issues always with an attentive eye to the right balance of challenge and discomfort management. Michael is knowledgeable. He explains the intention of each exercise and also gives sound nutrition advice. Many of the exercises he teaches actively engage multiple muscle groups at once. Michael is encouraging and shows an interest in his clients’ progress.
