Paeks Tae kwon do school for me is very impressive. From the moment I met Master Sunny he was very polite. I tried TKD years ago while in the Navy and had a real bad experience. Master Sunny invited me to try TKD at their school and it was a great experience. He’s very patient and when I don’t do a form correctly he points out what I did wrong, models the correct form and then has me repeat it until it’s correct. Even the other students in the class are very supportive and work together to encourage each other. If you’re thinking about this martial art I strongly recommend this school.

While Kim’s classes were conversational and heartfelt, Sunny’s are overly rigid and intense. Warm-ups feel rushed, with abrupt music that hinders focus. Instruction lacks the life lessons once present. Students are sometimes chastised by name, with personal issues discussed publicly, which may affect emotional comfort. Feedback from students is often overlooked. The headmaster regularly arrives late, reflecting disorganization—an issue for parents who depend on structure and punctuality.

I send my child, Kai here. This review is from both of our points of view. Kai loves going to Paek's and learning tae kwon do. As of this review, have tested and gotten their yellow stripe belt. I feel this provides an outlet for them to vent while having enough structure to teach them discipline. Kai says"It makes me get my energy out, teaches me self defense and is fun all at the same time." I haven't met the instructor myself, but Kai says Master Sunny is funny but serious, and knows how far to push each child.

I am relatively new to martial arts- I have only a year of experience. Out of all the schools I attended, this one is hands down the best. Master Sunny is very detail oriented, and always ensures that his students have proper technique and are explains everything very patiently and diligently. He helped develop my side kick/front kick and really helped me understand the mechanics of the kick better than anyone. I took my children to several other different martial arts studios/Do Jang’s for trials before we came to Paek’s Tae Kwon Do. It is by far the best! Grand Master Kim is so friendly and knowledgeable. I visited this taekwondo school once last week and I was very impressed with the kindness and support shown by Master Sunny as well as the other students in class. I have done taekwondo my whole life but I have been out of practice for 5 years now, and Master Sunny was extremely patient with me as I tried to regain my stamina and recall my training. Went there for a bit. One of the teachers continued to hurt my child during sparring and completely disregarding their requests about pain. I found music to be distracting during class as well. It does not seem enjoyable at all, being overly strict, Everytime my kid comes home bitter and wanting me to take them out. The teacher seems to put a blind eye to certain issues as well. I researched numerous Taekwondo schools in the Philadelphia area before choosing Paek’s. When I was reading about the school, what initially caught my attention was the history. I love the fact that it’s a family owned business and it’s pretty awesome that it’s been around for so long. Then, after reading about the extensive experience of the instructors, I was sold.

This was the best decision ever!!! From the moment I walked in, Grandmaster Kim and Master Sunny made this extremely awkward human feel completely welcomed. They are both amazing instructors not only because of their comprehensive knowledge in the art, but also because they are enthusiastic about teaching and truly care about helping their students improve. I already feel a lot stronger after a few months and also feel more confident in the ability to defend myself if needed, which is very important as a solo female traveler. I highly recommend Paek’s TKD School. I have trained in several TKD schools in US, Korea and overseas. It’s not easy to find a good school that teaches TKD properly from the basics. I wanted to find a martial arts class close to home where I could enroll my 5-year-old daughter. My goal was to boost her confidence and let her burn energy in a fun environment. After learning about McDojos—corporate martial arts schools primarily focused on profits—I made it a point to steer clear of them. When I was in the process of relocating to Philadelphia, I reached out to several taekwondo schools, and Paek's stood out as the most enthusiastic about welcoming me. I had a conversation with Master Sunny over the phone at the end of August 2023, while I was still in Connecticut, during which I expressed my interest in competitive sparring and provided details about my taekwondo background.

Since that initial phone call, I have not looked back on my decision. Through one-on-one lessons with Master Sunny, my technique and stamina have significantly improved, and I've also gained valuable insights into other aspects of taekwondo, as well as life in general. These lessons have not only honed my skills but also impacted my sleeping habits, nutrition, breathing, and mindfulness of my consumption.

Since September 2023, I've been having private lessons with Master Sunny, and the experience has been nothing short of wonderful. Each session is customized to help me reach my goal of entering the competitive sparring scene. Master Sunny's keen eye for detail is crucial in a taekwondo instructor, given the sport's plethora of intricate movements and stances.

Thanks to the diligent practice of the homework assigned to me between lessons and maintaining my overall fitness at a local gym, my progress has been impressive.

I also appreciate the rich history of Paek's and how it continues to contribute to its family, the local community, and the taekwondo community's legacy. After one of my lessons with Master Sunny, I was journaling the knowledge I had just gained when Grandmaster Kim struck up a conversation with me. He inquired about my taekwondo background, and I shared my childhood experience of attending Red Tiger Taekwondo in Philadelphia. At the mention of Red Tiger, Grandmaster Kim's eyes lit up, and he began to narrate the story of how he had trained one of the late higher Dons of Red Tiger. Not only did he train the Don, but he also trained the Don's children—a testament to the community impact! Grandmaster Kim concluded his story by asking, "Do you want to see a picture?" I replied, "A picture? Sure." He left the seating area, retrieved what appeared to be an 8" x 10" vintage picture of himself, the former higher Don, and the Don's children at a promotion ceremony. I was truly awestruck by the tangible and rich legacy of Paek's.

No matter what motivates you to pursue taekwondo, I wholeheartedly recommend Paek's. The instructors are knowledgeable and patient, catering to both children and adults. It's an empowering community that will leave you eagerly anticipating your next lesson each time you walk out the door.

Best of all too, Master Sunny is a great motivator too especially in times when you need it most to push through - certainly a master at his craft as an instructor. Overall very satisfied with my experience there and extremely rewarding to work alongside Master Sunny (and his father, Grand Master Kim). It’s pretty incredible how they’ve manage to bring such incredible value and insight of eastern philosophy to our local neighborhood - literally right at our door step. I think everyone could use a dose of it.

Just to add too, I’ve only heard about Paek’s via word of mouth before having come here. Only heard good things and was told how it’s been a small family business of a few generations. Pretty awesome stuff, so I’m more than happy to know I can support local business too.

If you are considering training in Tae Kwon Do then this is the BEST school for you. I trained here many years ago and returned two years ago to find Grandmaster Kim and now his son, Master Sunny Kim continue the traditional training as well as the modern "Olympic" style. Grandmaster Kim has dedicated his life to teaching the art of Tae kwon do. They are both constantly watching your form even in group classes to make sure first that you don't get hurt, and will correct your position or demonstrate proper technique so that you can achieve the understanding necessary to improve. The classes are fun and the school is like a family. You will learn self-discipline while improving your physical and mental health. The skills you learn are a way of life that will help you succeed in your personal, academic and professional goals. I highly recommend Paek's Taekwondo Academy and I hope to see you there!

I've been a student here for 10 years, and can say that coming here may have been the single best thing related to my development as a person. I was 8 when I started, and now at 18 I can look back and say that the confidence, discipline, independence, and self-sufficiency that makes up who I am today would not be present in their current quantities had I not trained here. Beyond developing as a person, both Grandmaster Kim and Master Sunny are extremely qualified and professional instructors that teach Tae Kwon Do to both the class as a whole, and to each individual student, making sure that no one falls behind or ever feels that they are unable to do anything. I highly recommend Paek's if you're interested in fitness or martial arts. They do a great job of making sure you have the fundamentals down, as everything builds up from that foundation. In addition to that, the owners are great people and care about their students, and do what they can to accommodate you if you have an injury or some other impediment. Plus if you're more into the fitness side of things, this is a great way to get some good, consistent workouts to help you lose weight.

I used to do TaeKwonDo as a kid and was looking to get back into now that I'm older. Thankfully I stumbled upon this school! Grandmaster Kim and Master Sunny are not only super knowledgeable about TKD but are also great teachers. Honestly, I was looking for ways to get active it was between Kickboxing or starting TaeKwondo. I decided to give Taekwondo a chance and I have been doing it for 8 months now and I don't regret it for a second. My 5 year old takes classes from Master Sunny. He used to go to another studio before. Master Sunny is so patient, very nice but also tough! Very rare combination in a teacher!! We feel so lucky to have found this place.
40 minutes with Master Sunny is like 7 hours in another Tae Kwon Do school. The results are incredible! My a bit whiny 5 year old is turning into a strong and powerful superhero!

My two boys started training last year. The growth I have seen with them is O-U-T-S-T-A-N-D-I-N-G!!! Their confidence levels have increased, their focus, and the ability to take some time off the screen to practice.

I started 6 months after my boys, a crazy thing for someone starting at the age of 50, and having a slight bump in the road in life. The ability to focus, unlearn what I've learned, a change in diet, and the positive constructive criticism Master Kim offers, drastically improved my life.
