I’ve been a member of Shape Training in East Liberty for a year now, and I can confidently say it has made me the strongest I’ve ever been. Before joining Shape, I was doing simple at-home workouts with dumbbells for about 1–2 years, but I found myself losing motivation and consistency.
Joining Shape was one of the best decisions I’ve made. The multi-phase approach to training is smart and sets you up for success. I appreciate that I’m pushed when I need it, and I fully trust my trainer, Delroy, to step in and guide me when things get challenging. While I haven’t trained with every coach, it’s clear from the loyal community of long-term members that the entire team brings value. Each trainer has a unique style and personality, so there’s someone for every fitness preference and schedule.
I love the small squad setup—training with 2–3 others not only keeps me motivated but has also helped me build a sense of community with both the trainers and fellow members. After experiencing personal loss this past year, Shape has been a grounding and positive space for me.
The little details matter too—I love the flowers in the bathroom and the great music (at least when I’m there!). You can sign up for classes through the app, which is convenient, though I will say it gets clunky sometimes.
Delroy is especially knowledgeable and takes the time to understand my body, my strengths, and where I need to improve. I can’t recommend Shape Training enough for anyone serious about getting stronger, building consistency, and finding a supportive community.

I’ve been training at Shape on and off for several years, and consistently for the past year. I’m never stronger or more confident than when I’m there regularly.
The staff is great - they worked with me through my pregnancy (I know they've done the same for others) and provided alternate movements when necessary.
Each trainer has a different vibe, so you can find someone that works for you. I typically train with Delroy who is notorious for his tough love. Something you’ll often hear from him is “you’re not gonna die”. And even though sometimes I really want to cuss him out, I’m extremely grateful to train with him. He’ll test your limits, keep you in good form, and help troubleshoot if something feels off.
I have also occasionally trained with Xavier and enjoy those sessions as well (there will be less yelling)!
Lastly, the gymgoers are great. I’ve made great friends and many other acquaintances I wouldn’t have otherwise met. Sometimes you just need to commiserate in the group chat when you can’t go down the stairs without wincing.

Working with Zach, Sam, and Marty has been a game changer — they’re all incredibly knowledgeable, supportive, and genuinely invested in helping you improve. I wanted to come back to provide some more info on my review! I started taking class pass fitness classes around the city for a few months. And after taking numerous fitness classes like F45, Mecka, etc., I can confidently say Shape is THE best in Pittsburgh. Their workouts are the hardest but also adaptable for your fitness level, they put a lot of effort into the construction of their group fitness workouts, they have such a nice space and variety of equipment, constantly change their exercises, and just have very knowledgeable coaches. I like the fact that coaches count you down on your reps, almost motivating you to keep going. They also give you individual attention by encouraging you and motivating you. Confidently, I can say Shape offers the best in Pittsburgh.

I've been going to shape 6 months now, and I couldn't recommend this place more!! I have been taking the group fitness classes (8 a month) since I started and am so incredibly impressed with the gains I have made! I am running faster, lifting heavier, and have noticed significant changes in my body comp!
Each group fitness class is unique, with a series of different strength /cardio / mobility exercises that never gets boring. The coaches change up the workouts for every class and are all super motivating and passionate. I train so much harder in class than I would alone in the gym because of it! It's also super budget friendly, especially for graduate students like me who want a good workout at a good cost. This place is so worth and I highly recommend <3

I have been meaning to write this for a while--I've been training at Shape for the last several years and this gym is the real deal. The trainers are knowledgeable, intentional, approachable, and fun and the workouts are incredibly effective. There are no gimmicks to their training approach--they taught me how to strength train the right way with good form and focus to avoid injury and to optimize progression over time. The training is functional and has improved my performance in sports outside of the gym. I continue to be blown away by the progress I've made over time in terms of strength and endurance. They've provided me a really solid foundation of strength, conditioning, and mobility that I wish I had found years ago. The community and energy are also great--very supportive and encouraging. I joined this gym a few years back. It is clean and organized. The staff are friendly and encouraging. I had to leave my contract early for medical reasons and they worked with me to come up with a way to do so. My trainer did zoom training during covid and i saw good results going there. 10/10.

I started with SHAPE training earlier this year and enjoyed my entire experience there.
Coaches Marty, Delroy and Xavier were supportive and personalized my workouts even in the group classes. Going through my goals with them in the beginning was helpful because they knew I wanted to get stronger within certain muscle groups. I enjoyed their structured classes incorporating cardio and strength training.
I had to stop my membership due to an injury and moved out of the area. I am hoping to find a gym similar to SHAPE training in my new location!

I wish I had checked the details of the 1-start reviews. I suggest that people think twice before entering a long term program. People here seem nice and reasonable before you decide to leave for any reason. The employees here have inconsistent words, and I have to pay more than the cancellation fee to leave the program. The training quality is OK here but the messy management and billing can ruin the experience. The main issues:
1. When I sign up for the personal training 12-month program, the trainer told me I have to pay first two months' fee upfront. However, when I decide to end the program, I checked the billing history and found I paid two months upfront and one monthly payment every following month. I am OK with paying an extra cancellation fee to leave, but I want to get the overcharged one month fee back. Then I was told the first payment is the first/last month fee, which will not be refunded because I ended the program early. This is different from what I was told in the first place, and even if this is true, the last month fee should be used as the last month fee. I don't understand why they kept the extra month's fee which they didn't provide service for.
2. When I tried to end the program, I expect to get the service for the last month I paid for. However, I was told that since I call them 5 days before the monthly charge date and their billing system charges the monthly payment 5 days before the payment date, I can either give up the left sessions of the month to stop the next payment or continue with the next month payment. In short, I cannot use the left session of the last month if I decide to end the program, even if I already paid for it. I don’t think the customer should be responsible for their billing 5 days in advance.
There are other issues, for example, part of the personal trainers might not be as responsive as need to when you schedule the appointment, and you might roll over the sessions for later use. If you decide the end the program early, they will tell you the rollover sessions will all be cancelled.
If you decide to leave for any reason, things get messy as some other reviewers said. The employees’ words are inconsistent and in the end you pay much more than you expected. The training quality is acceptable, but watch out for long-term commitment.

A great gym and the nicest coaches! Mario are so so so patient for the strength training and Ma’kin helps a lot about the boxing. I go there four times a week and each class takes 45 min. I can feel the change of my strength after 1 month. I will continue with the training and see how it goes.

Being a member of SHAPE has been nothing short of transformative. I started out just boxing but then (nervously) made my way into the strength classes. I am so glad I did!! The workouts are fun but challenging, pushing me to new limits every class. The instructors are incredibly motivating, ensuring proper form and encouraging us to give it our all. The community here is amazing; everyone is supportive of each other and super friendly. Having fun along the way is key! Sometimes it’s intimidating to join a new gym. SHAPE is NOT one of those places. The facilities are open and spacious and vibrant!…Super cool. Not your typical “gym”.

I've been going to Shape for over a year and I love it. I started just going to the group classes, which are among the best in Pittsburgh. Coach Delroy is my favorite instructor, because he gives me that tough love I need to properly push myself- that's why people go to group classes. I leave feeling challenged and never defeated, and don't feel out of place being the almost 40 year old with some meat on my bones. I began training with Coach Tristan and he's amazing. While I haven't properly measured my progress I know I'm hitting my goals. My only suggestion would be, that it would be amazing if there were some 5pm group classes- though I realize that may not be feasible for the average work schedule. I've never had an issue with billing that wasn't my fault and resolved promptly. Strongly recommended!

I've been going to Shape for the last four years and can confidently say it is the best gym in Pittsburgh! The trainers are all so knowledgeable and take the time to help you learn the movements and correct form so you're less likely to get injured. I started working out at shape around four months ago and I could not recommend it enough!! I was bored with the same old routine and was feeling uninspired in the gym. I was invited to my first free class and immediately felt welcomed and apart of a community. The coaches at shape are all amazing, and always go out of their way to help! They meet you at your current level of fitness, and push you mentally and physically (in the best way) to reach your fullest potential! The classes are upbeat and fun and the facility is super nice!! I have been going to SHAPE since 2017 and absolutely love it. I started with the group athletics classes and have continued taking them to this day. I had never gone to a gym before SHAPE and now I can’t imagine not going. I added personal training three years ago with Delroy and have had a great experience. The sessions are challenging but rewarding, and it’s great to be able to track my progress.
The programming at SHAPE, whether it’s for classes or personal training, is very thoughtful and intentional. They follow a cycle with specific phases, such as stability/conditioning, strength endurance, and hypertrophy. The overall emphasis is on building strength and muscle, and the trainers will work with you to set and meet your specific goals.
Coming to SHAPE has definitely made me stronger physically and mentally and has been an amazing community for me as well.

He has been as committed to me as I to him. Even during the pandemic we were training via zoom calls! Can’t say enough great things about SHAPE! I will never push myself as hard as DJ pushes me in my group and individual trainings. I’ve been trying to get wedding ready and he has been amazing to work with, he’s always really knowledgeable about the workouts he’s giving you and you can tell there’s a lot of thought behind each weeks classes. I've trained at Shape since it first opened at its former location on Commerce St. Now on Penn Ave., Shape is THE gym to go to. The trainers are all excellent in the service and attention they give to clients. They work with you individually and in groups as well. Personal training is not the only offering. There are bootcamps, classes, and open gym as well. If you're looking for a gym, Shape should be at the top of your list.

My experience at SHAPE TRAINING was really disappointing. While their coaches are professional and passionate, the positive aspects are completely overshadowed by their chaotic management and terrible billing system.
Back in August, I faced wrongful double charges on my account, which was a big red flag. Despite my efforts, I was told in November that I would get a refund, but till now, that refund seems to have vanished. My inquiries were almost ignored, sometimes they promised a refund, and other times they claimed it was already done, it is not their issue that
I haven’t received a refund – this kind of passing the buck and irresponsibility is extremely frustrating.
Worse still, when I tried to upgrade my plan, they arbitrarily extended my contract by an extra month without my consent, and this was never clearly communicated to me.
I strongly advise anyone considering joining SHAPE TRAINING to think again. The lack of organization and disregard for customer concerns have completely ruined my experience here. When choosing a fitness service, transparent and responsible management is just as important, and sadly, SHAPE TRAINING fails completely in this respect.

I've been chasing this refund since September, not just recently. It was only in November you started the refund process, and despite getting a receipt in December, I've seen nothing in my account. Here we are in February 2024, and I'm still empty-handed.
It feels like I'm getting the run-around. Every time I ask, I'm told "it's been done, check with your bank." - well, I did, I tried to dispute the transaction with my bank, BUT you guys blocked it. So, where does that leave me?
I understand that the initial double payment was not intentional. However, my membership was extended by one month when I upgraded, and no one told me about it. Was this deliberate or an oversight? I'm left wondering.
I'm beyond frustrated. It's not just the money; it's about getting things straight. Can we please just sort this out once and for all?

I worked with a personal trainer at SHAPE for 2 years before striking out on my own. In that time, I went from a complete beginner who never touched a barbell in her life to feeling like I could consistently squat and deadlift with good form. My coach, Taylor, was very supportive and encouraging but would also push me to do my best and work hard. Kailen has been an amazing personal trainer for me. I never really liked working out until I started going to Shape. He customizes the workouts to make sure his clients are are focussing on what they want to improve on. For me it was rotation, flexibility and mobility. Kailen specializes in this (anyone who wants to get more powerful in golf, baseball, etc. he is your guy!) He is also very knowledgeable if you have any injuries. We were able to work out through a rotator cuff issue and helped me get back to full strength much quicker. 5 stars all around.

Awesome place! I feel so lucky to have this gym in my East Liberty backyard. I started training with Dan Hill at SHAPE in 2021. I have been with SHAPE for many years now. I have watched them grow into the gym that it is now. I have joined a few gyms in my life, but I didn’t use them much or I haven’t stayed with them very long. SHAPE is different. The fact that I am still there after 5+ years makes that clear. Everything about SHAPE, the facility, the classes, personal training, and most importantly the people, are the reasons why I continue to go year after year. SHAPE has made a big impact on my life. After my 12 month recovery from ACL rupture and surgical repair I knew I didn't just want to get stronger I NEEDED to get strong. Multiple physical therapists had worked with Sam Arnold previously and recommended Shape Training. Not only did I achieve that goal of fully recovering my knee but my entire mind and body is stronger. In a short amount of time I gained an amazing coach Amanda, a community, a motivator and a life coach. The community is also so positive cheering on PRs and pushing through hard workouts. I am stronger now than when I was in my prime playing sports. When I did my first backpacking hike on LHHT after surgery I could hear my coach saying "You got this lady. You are made to do hard things. Strong girl stuff!" It is also amazing to see your progress through the Fit3D scans!

Great gym. Great classes and equipment and pretty good programming (if you can get your coach to adapt to your goals and not theirs) and knowledgeable coaches. The business model to push for commitment of more services and the written contracts are kind of ridiculous. Very pushy “salesmen” and shame based selling tactics as well as some shame based coaches. All or nothing mentality. The contract is a nightmare to end, and if you end, you actually have to pay another fee per session you already paid for (kind of ridiculous) on top of the massive cancellation fee and I did not read that fine print. All in all, decent gym with great programming potential but the business model, selling tactics and some of the mentality of the coaches were not for me.

I’ve been training at Shape for seven years and cannot say enough good things. Throughout that time (even via Zoom during the pandemic!), I have had the privilege to work with Sam Arnold as my personal trainer, who not only provided the challenge, motivation and accountability to help me become strong, but who also has a deep understanding of physiology and was able to draw on that to adapt and modify my program as necessary to help me overcome a serious injury that I had suffered outside the gym.
I also recommend Shape’s group classes and boot camps. While highly challenging, Shape’s coaches are adept at suggesting modifications for people of different fitness levels. Indeed, one of the things that I love about Shape is its feeling of community and inclusivity. When I travel and go to other gyms, for example, I often feel uncomfortable as a middle-aged woman walking into the free weight area. There is none of that feeling at Shape. It feels like a place where everyone is just excited to be working to be the best version of themselves. Great place!

I cannot believe I have never written a public review of SHAPE! I've been loyal to them since day one and have had a variety of trainers throughout my tenure. Each one has been responsive, enthusiastic, friendly, and became a fixture in my life.
I joined because I needed the accountability, but what I got was a community of cheerleaders who know me, and support my efforts to get stronger. Some sessions are hard, and others are harder. But each time, I trust the trainers and their expertise and I get through it.

Just a warning for anyone who is joining this gym. They make it very difficult to cancel your membership and will continue to bill you even after you have made it clear that you are not a member anymore. I took a break from the gym for a month or two when I went back to teaching in the Fall. I spoke with several people about this and even called about the changes I was making to my membership. I was still billed the full amount even though I made the changes. I was not given a refund. The bad customer service made me not want to return. The teachers at the gym were great. But management is not as welcoming. Just be careful if you are joining or changing your schedule.

I have been debating to write a review or not but as someone who goes to other club gyms and had different experiences, I think it is necessary.
So overall, I want to say I did learn a lot at shape, but their overall service is what really discouraged me to want to continue going, enough to let my money go to waste because of the hassle this ended up being.
I do think their trainers are very knowledgeable I do, but their billing system, over all communication, and professionalism is off the charts, and not in a good way.
1. I signed up for personal training but quite honestly, it became really hard in regards to scheduling because my trainer lacked communication, It literally took a whole week sometimes to get back to me. I am not PA so I travelled back to my home town across the country during the holidays and I had to be the one tracking my trainer down to get my missed sessions rescheduled. It was until a week before my months were up and I asked about my classes did they let me know I had a week left to make up my classes. Lastly to be honest, I thought I was going to get more out of the personal training, like learning exactly what I should be eating, what would be more beneficial, more guidance overall, but nope, instead my trainer thought it would be more beneficial to scold me for not eating enough protein, like if i needed to do my own research and be my own hype person on this I probably would've never signed up at all. I also felt bullied and discouraged when I said I didn't want to continue one on one training, the trainer said I'd be going back, I had come along way, that I would be slacking and I don't think that's ok. I understand this is their job but you don't bully someone into getting their sale.
2. I also had a class member. When I decided it was time to cancel since my schedule no longer aligned with the class scheduled, they made the process impossible, hectic and unnecessarily troubling. It was a back and fourth from DJ to Delroy through Instagram, instead of emailing me nope. I emailed called and nothing. It prolonged this that I got charged an extra month classes, and to be honest because of the over all negative experience I had in trying to get my membership cancelled, I never went back to finish those classes I still had left because I felt extremely uncomfortable. So there went about $80+ down the drain, that I didn't get refunded, didn't have some reach out over.
None of their policies are the same or accurate. Its always a he said she said kind of thing, seems like everything is always changing depending on the person. Just like other reviews say , which I agree and understand, these people are nice and welcoming as long as you're interested and a part of shape, but the minute you decide not to continue to stop going or become uninterested, they become bullies and very discouraging. I have two other friends who had similar and maybe worst experiences and unfortunately I became the third.

Taylor is an excellent trainer. I have been working with her for 6 months and I have learned so much already. Taylor has a good knowledge of the fundamentals of fitness and she is passionate about training others. She is gentle and respectful, but she also challenges me during each session. Can’t find gyms like this just anywhere! After taking classes consistently 5 years ago and then moving around the country for the last 4 years, I always come back to Shape anytime I’m in Pittsburgh. The quality of the classes and personal training are hard to come by. I recently moved to Pittsburgh and was on the hunt for a really good gym. I came across Shape Training through Instagram and stalked them for weeks before deciding to finally try out one of their outdoor boot camp classes. From the moment I walked in, I was welcomed with open arms by every single coach that I encountered. Eventually, I decided to become a member of their classes because I fell in love with them. I’ve tried so many of their classes and I can tell you that they all give you an amazing workout. I particularly love the boxing classes, shout out to Coach Deon and The Lift/ATM by Coach Jeremy.
After a few weeks, I realized I needed to add personal training to the mix in order dial in on my goals. Personal training has been absolutely amazing. I might be biased, but I think my trainer, Jeremy, is the best of the best. In just a few sessions in, I can tell that I’m getting stronger. Jeremy pushes me, challenges me, and believes in me. When life hits me hard and I feel like I can’t make it through, he turns my days around. It’s not just about exercise, it’s about compassion and mental health.
I’m a military wife so we move around to different states every couple of years, so I’ve tried out so many gyms in the past 12 years. I can say that hands down, Shape Training is the best in practically every category I can think of. It’s just so unique. From the positive energy that radiates from all of the coaches and members to how intense and varied the classes are along with having top notch facilities and equipment. You just can’t go wrong with joining Shape!

Shape is a fantastic facility, quite unmatched in Pittsburgh. I have a personal trainer and take classes, so I work out there 6-7 times per week. I am very happy with my personal training, but my experience with the classes has been a hit or miss. When I started about a year ago, I really benefitted from some very supportive instructors who have since left. Many of the current coaches seem to be busier filming Instagram videos than actually correcting and following the students during class. The environment is not supportive and not conducive to real progress. That's a shame, since the classes could be excellent otherwise.

The friendships, the accountability, and the intensely satisfying workouts are worth it. I walked in to SHAPE Training almost 3 years ago and never looked back. I do personal training with Casey and take their boxing and strength training classes. One of the best decisions I have ever made. I am stronger and feel better than I ever have. It has become an escape for me and I genuinely enjoy walking in every day. The coaches are supportive and skilled with each bringing their own style. They push you to go farther than you think you can and you walk out feeling better than when you walked in. I’ve belonged to several different gyms and tried countless classes over the years and SHAPE is the one that stuck. It’s challenging and never boring. And the best part – I have met great people who have become close friends.
If you are looking for something different, a great atmosphere and a little fun in your workouts, I would highly recommend taking a class or meeting one of their trainers for a consultation – you won’t regret it! Plus their new space on Penn Ave is AMAZING!

Once you experience Shape you will never want to go back to a cookie cutter gym. Shape has trainers and classes for all ages and abilities. If you are dealing with an injury they can also work with you and help to get you back to normal. I consider the Shape staff and other Shape members an extension of my family. I am so grateful to have found this unique gym.

The instructors at Shape are very knowledgeable and friendly. As a fitness professional I hold other coaches to a high standard and from what I observed throughout the gym, all of the instructors know their stuff. Sam's class was fun, challenging, informative, and easy to follow. If I lived in the state I would have joined on the spot. I look forward to being able to take advantage of their affordable drop in classes in the future.

Shape Training has proven consistently to be committed to their clients, and they've been essential to me in my fitness goals. I have personal training there and do boxing classes, and both of these are easily the best workouts that I've done in my life. The coaches are all incredibly friendly, welcoming (yet they'll still definitely push you!), and take the time to learn who you are. Furthermore, they vary the workout experience each time you go, and I really feel like I"m in the best shape of my life since joining. I really appreciate this gym and their services!

When you walk into Shape Training, you not only gain a coach, trainer, & friends, but an entire family. Every coach at Shape Training is there for you to better yourself physically, as well as mentally - not to mention that the experience that each and every one of them have is unique and second to none.
When you walk through the doors at Shape Training, you best drop your ego at the door, and prepare yourself for an invigorating workout, while having a damn good time doing it. The training is intense, and manipulated each week to keep your body guessing.

Shape Training’s gym is not filled with machines that require monotonous movements repeated session after session, it is instead staffed with professionals that tailor workouts to your needs and desires. Whether you’re a twenty something ready to take on a marathon, or a fifty-year-old wanting to keep doing the things you love, the trainers at Shape will craft a plan perfect for you.
The atmosphere at Shape is welcoming and supportive. There are group classes if your budget precludes one-on-one training, however the personal training is quite affordable by industry standards. This is not a place filled gym rats preening in front of mirrors, but instead a lively space filled with people of all ages working towards their goals.
My daughter was (and still is) an enthusiastic member of the gym and she encouraged me to take part in personal training with Sarah Holick. one of the owners at Shape.
After a lifetime of confidence in my body’s ability to do whatever I wanted it to do, time began to take a toll on that certainty. Nagging questions about what my limitations were, a decline in flexibility and a knee that told me “no more high impact activities” drove me to begin an exercise program at Shape Training.
For me, the emphasis has been on total body workouts, emphasizing functional fitness, but with enough challenge that I have seen a tremendous increase in strength and confidence. Ten “real” push-ups are pretty good for a 60-year-old broad!
Sarah hits the perfect balance of pushing me beyond my comfort zone, while respecting body’s limits. A bonus is that she has a graduate degree in marriage and family counseling, making her a terrific confidant and friend. Our time together has been life-changing both physically and mentally. What an awesome place to work out!!! I’ve been going to Shape for a little over a year and it’s been the best! My husband and I do private sessions with Marty once a week and take classes regularly with all of the trainers. The setup and schedule for the group classes are great. Shape starts each class with a group warm-up and ends each class with a group cool-down and the time in between is action packed. Every class is different and not repetitive at all so I always feel engaged in the work out. Also, the jams are pumped so it’s a lot of fun! One thing to note is that each class only holds about 10 people so it’s a good idea to schedule in advance. Marty does a great job tailoring our personal sessions to our current ability but still pushes us to go further. He modifies different exercises for me vs. my husband based on our strengths. Marty definitely kicks our butt during each session but it’s always such a good work out and we learn a lot from our time with him. I’ve seen such great results and differences since coming to Shape and I’d totally recommend this gym to anyone!

I am very grateful I got turned on to this place, I could kiss my friend for getting me to try a class one day. This training facility is by far one of the best I have been to around Pittsburgh. I am dedicated to a fit lifestyle I love working out, I love lifting but the thought of your average group class made me cringe. I have been and belonged to many different gyms, studios and classes. This facility brings an edge to training like none I have seen around. It puts an athletic spin on the classes and it challenges you in ways that is essential to getting maximum results and this is something that is missing from most fitness classes. It isn't even fair to call it a class.. I consider even their group classes to be more like training. They make it fun with great music and many tools you can use to track your progress. Every trainer that I have encountered so far has been very pleasant and motivating. You can tell they truly want you to push your hardest and get maximum results. If your going to invest your time and hard earned money into fitness classes or a training facility I guarantee Shape Training is worth every penny. They have many options to choose from, I personally do a group class of my choice once a week.. (sometimes two). The group classes are limited so you MUST pre register because it is not uncommon for peak times and weekends to fill up but they have a waiting list... I have yet to have run into a real issue with this. They also have a great app that's extremely user friendly. It allows you to check your account, view details of the class, book classes, cancel class or add to a waiting list for a class. They also offer private one on one training. I do not do this option only because it is not in my budget, if it was I would have gotten that option but you cant win them all. Their classes are also pretty unique and innovative(descriptions are on the website I believe). I have not been this challenged in and or excited about classes in my whole life. My father use to body build and when I tell him about what I do in some of these classes he wishes he was young again (true story). Shape has a long term customer here. I already referred a few friends here an one cant stop talking it up . So this five star review is well deserved. I hope this review helps to get you to at least try it out. You will not be disappointed.
