We have been members of this YMCA since it opened 8 years ago, and despite a 10% increase in our monthly membership fees earlier this year, the service and the condition of the facility and equipment continues to go downhill. The front desk staff are primarily young people who can’t even be bothered to look up from their phones when members are coming and going. Twice this past summer, after an evening workout, I vacated the locker room shortly before 9pm (the Y closes at 9pm on weeknights) to find the place deserted, the staff gone, and the doors locked. The locker rooms are no longer cleaned on a nightly basis - I am not sure how this is even possible. This is obvious when you are the first person in at 6am and there is hair / debris all over the floor / trash cans filled to the brim. Soap dispensers will fall off the walls in the shower stalls or above the sink and lay broken for weeks. A light bulb has been out in one of the shower stalls for over a month, rendering it unusable; despite my informing the front desk about this, nothing has been done. Two of the four most popular ellipticals have been broken for over a month for one, and for almost three months for the other. This is not an exaggeration. When I have inquired about the timeline for getting these machines either fixed or replaced, I am met with an indifferent shrug by the staff. Really hoping things start to improve soon, but not counting on it. We are already looking to move on.

I am feeling that the stuff working in this location are racist and discriminate non white members. I also noticed that the swimming pool stuff/safe guards are receiving gifts from certain swimmers/members which should not be allowed.
My son 8 year old using the treadmill for walking with speed only 2mile/h under my close supervising, which is recommended my our UPMC children's hospital doctor for physical training. One of the trainer at YMCA abruptly stopped us however there is no written policy can be searched on their website or posted on wall saying the same thing. Even during our first day orientation staff clearly said that kids of 7 to 9 can use facilities under parents close watch and supervising.

Updated May 2024 (1 star to 4 star)

This gym has come a long way since my original review. It can still be very crowded here, but many updates and upgrades have occurred.

The facility now has five bench/squat racks. The floor is much better organized and handles the influx of people well. The locker room showers have recently been updated, and there are saunas, but I have not used them.

β€”β€”- original β€”β€”β€”
Incredibly cramped, 1 squat rack, 1 regular bench, and one inclined bench.

Additionally, there is no space for deadlifting in the weights area. You will also be inches from the next person in the free weights because they crammed it all into one corner.

There is a sizeable unused basketball court area if you need fresh air.

Suppose you care about personal space and do not inhale the air from the person working out next to you. Find another location.

This gym is one of the cleanest I've ever been to. It's reasonably priced, there is support for low income, the trainers are amazing and I feel like the staff actually cares.
The classes offered are varied and most are included in the normal fee.
Even when it's busy, there is plenty to do and space to move can't recommend it enough.

My daughter (6 yrs old), just finished up a round of private swim lessons with John and he was excellent! In just two short hours she is so much more confident in the pool. The whole time she felt safe and had a lot of fun. She's already asking when we can come back for more lessons. Thanks John!

This YMCA is very clean and everyone that I have encountered is friendly. I signed my daughter up so she could swim laps in her off-season and it’s nice you can schedule on your phone on an app. I would definitely recommend their amenities. Also it is only $22 for a monthly membership for children ages 12 to 18.

This ymca has so much potential but unfortunately there have too many restrictions for the cost. We signed up for swimming lessons which has been fine although it’s only 30 minutes and the kids do not want to get out of the pool. However there is no choice to stay and reinforce their newly learned skills because the pool is closed due to other lessons. When im able to get a reservation for 1 hour of swim, I’m lucky. This can only be reserved 1 hour a day and sign up for sessions are not until 24 hours prior to event. Typically 4 families are allowed to swim at once total. We don’t really use the y for anything else so 70$ a month is a little steep just for an hour at the pool once a week. (We don’t live exactly right down the street) Swimming Lessons Is extra $$. Then the last time we were swimming on a Saturday afternoon, my kids wanted to have the sprinklers turned on in the pool they talked about it all morning but we were told since there was an instructor giving a personal lesson that we couldn’t. She ended up teaching for our whole hour there. I don’t feel like that’s fair to be paying for the use of facilities but still Have so many restrictions. Then l actually saw and heard the young life guards mocking me for asking about the pool sprinklers. Very disappointing! I have postponed my membership and will see if the scheduling situation has returned to precovid Ways in a couple months

Free weight area is entirely too cramped. No room to move and you’re on top of each other. No room to deadlift and no benches are two to three feet apart at most.

I gave them two stars due to a very positive start. I had wonderful interactions with the first two ladies at the front desk. Both were super helpful and very kind.

The reason I went so low was due to a severe lack of professionalism and an absolutely rude trainer. Upon my enrollment for the YMCA, I was told I could have a 30 minute one-on-one with a personal trainer. I had my time set for 11-11:30. The trainer did not arrive until 11:20 and upon arrival, she got right into it. She didn’t even apologize for being so late. She did not ask about my specific gym experience, what I wanted/needed to work on, she just started in right away. I at least thought she would have asked me what I wanted to focus on or my experience level. When I said I needed to leave β€œearly” (at 11:45 as I had other appointments , I got a very sour reaction from her.

When I cancelled my membership due to joining for the classes (which a few were taught by her and I did not feel that I would do well), the person I talked to was very dismissive of my poor experience which only made me want to leave that much quicker.

Maybe this will work for other people, but it certainly did not work out for me.

The gym and pool facilities were nice; no complaints about that part.

I was discouraged with the staff as I set a specific end date to my membership because I was leaving Pittsburgh for the military (active duty). When I got out of my basic training (2 months later after having no access to internet/phone/etc), I found that my membership wasn't canceled as they told me it would be. I was charged for an additional 2 months and would not be refunded for the two months of membership that I was charged. Additionally, there was no contract/term that stated the minimum membership time, so contractually they had no grounds for charging me the extra 2 months of membership besides their incompetency.

We love this location. The only downside we are having is the availability of the full facility. We joined specifically for the gym so our kids can play basketball while we workout and recently the gym has been rented out so there isnt a whole lot for them to do. Outside of that, the equipment is great!

Though lacking in some weight lifting equipment, it's hard to knock it for what's it's not specialized for. The facility is fantastic and the place is always crazy clean for a gym like this. I have been a member all my life, coast to coast: CA-MO-WI-IL-OH- and now here in PA; despite it's being only two years old, this facility and most importantly patrons are the absolute worst; first- who was he genious that had made it so.small. _ I understand it was converted from a warehouse but still... Second, people take their opposite gender kids to locker rooms with them out of convenience, RUDE (ALSO illegal?); Then _ people come to take showers w/out doing anything else (put of frugality (?))_ insane! Bottom line; I have switched to JCC and never looked back.

Me and my fiancee joined primarily for the pool and have had terrible experiences with the teenage life guards. They seem bothered and are unhelpful.

Theres a lap pool and a family pool, and they run classes in the early evening. If you want a swim after work make sure to check the schedule. The Y is connected to the high school, be aware that teenagers frequent the pools so competiton is pretty high.

If you dont care about the pools you might enjoy the workout area, but the machines seem a little sparse. We didnt check out the ice rink or cycling course.

We're probably canceling our membership because of the pool, if thats a deal breaker for you then there are better options.

We recently joined and today was our first day. I took Zumba and the kids went to the kids play area. I loved the class and the instructor was amazing! Loved her. Was a very fun class. After, my 3 kids and I used the pool. Water was warm and there were floats and small duckies that the kids loved. My one complaint was a swim instructor who was giving private lessons the whole time. We asked to use the noodles and googles and when my 4 year old reached for one she yelled at him that she was using this for a lesson that she was giving. I was taken aback by how angry she got. The whole time she would glare at any kids that happened to come near her. Then, we were using the kick board and I was showing my seven year old how to swim and he was kicking from one end to the other and I was watching. He was tried to swim around the back of her while yelling.. excuse me. She literally stopped holding two tiny kids to turn around and scream at him that they were there swimming and what is wrong with him that he would try to swim on top of kids. He got so upset and swam away crying. He kept saying to me I’m so sorry and I didn’t know I was swimming too close to them. I wanted to do swim lessons foru kids but now I’m worried that they would be set up with someone who is so hateful and unprofessional. Just be careful who your child ended up being paired with.

I'm really surprised by all the negative reviews. We have been members since they opened and my family loves it. The people in the Kid Care know my kids, the swim lessons my kids took last summer were great, the facility is always clean and the staff is friendly.

Steer clear of this place if you have kids because a teenage 'lifeguard' feels its necessary to act like a A-hole to children under 5. You know, instead of acting like a human being.
If a business cannot even hire decent personnel that can reflect their reputation in the public eye, then they will never have your best interest in mind. Only whats in your wallets.

The facility is brand new along with the equipment. The people at the front are typically very pleasant. I’m surprised that after the amount of money they spent on this facility there was no steam shower. I had brought the kids to swim during an open time as per their schedule in the family area and was told we were not allowed to use an area because of a lesson. After asking management they said they were not allowed to do that, but it had happened a couple of times. So there seems to be a communication breakdown. Most recently my credit card was renewed, so my payment did not go through. They called me, but due to work, kids and just being busy. I hadn’t had time to go up and give the correct info. It had been 2.5-3 weeks. I just received a letter threatening to turn me into the credit collections for $72.00 and also a threatening phone call. This is how a family centered business acts.

The gym equipment is brand new, as is the entire building. However, they should've put more thought into the locker rooms. The floors are always wet and the decor, or lack of, makes it look like a cheap high school locker room. It's also very expensive at $54 per month. Now that includes everything like child care, group classes and use of the gym and pool, but still seems steep.
