Love this place -- Extremely well equipped for pretty much any kind of weight training. Never too busy Tons of parking. It even has a basketball court for my warm ups. Brian is extremely knowledgeable, AND I've never run into a creep here! 😆 Would recommend to anyone looking to focus on strength training.

I visited while traveling to Pittsburgh and I really enjoyed the experience. There’s SO MUCH equipment and it’s all clean and orderly. There’s also a ton of space to do all sorts of strength training and other exercises. Highly recommend whether you’re visiting or looking for a powerlifting gym in Pittsburgh!

Great place, great owner, and great team! Very welcoming environment, very clean facilities, and very respectful community. Highly recommend this gym as a place to workout at your own pace/rhythm or sign up to get training from the awesome team.

I’m moving to Baltimore this weekend and this gym is one of the top places i will miss! I wish I could take it with me, along with Coach Brian. While the gym is a bit rough around the edges, very man oriented and sometimes stuff is lying around, but it’s the best place for Olympic weightlifting in Pittsburgh. You’re able to throw your weights around with only cheers from coach Brian for a good lift.

This was an awesome gym, came to Pittsburgh for USAW Nationals from Wisconsin and was almost out of luck for a training venue since we got here a little late. I spoke to the owner on the phone about a drop in, and he was an extremely nice person, experienced in Olympic weightlifting. Zack helped me out while I was in there, awesome dude. The gym had good vibes all around, good price, not too busy, lots of platforms and barbells. I recommend!

I can't recommend Steel City Barbell enough!
I have been working out with Coach Brian for almost 6 months. He helped me recover from a hip injury. He creates customized workouts that help me heal, build strength, and learn proper form.
I came in to heal from an injury - I am staying because I know that the work I do at the gym (just a couple hours a week) is going to help counteract sitting all day and prevent future injuries. I never saw myself doing weight training - I'm a 40 year old woman who likes things like yoga, walking, and bike riding. But the workouts have been varied so it's never boring. And they're adjusted to be challenging and fun as I progress, but not too hard that I feel discouraged.
Coach Brian encourages and motivates me in way that feels supportive and positive. I know he really cares about my exercise journey, and that makes all the difference! I wouldn't be where I am today without Coach Brian.
I have seen ages 8 to 80 working out in the gym. It's a friendly and welcoming community. There's even a basketball/pickleball court. On top of everything it has to offer, my two favorite gym dogs always brighten my day!

I’ve been going to Steel City Barbell for 6 months now and cannot say enough good things about it. The facility is large with plenty of room to work out, even when it’s busy. They also have specialized equipment that you won’t find anywhere else in the city and have added new equipment almost every six weeks since I started going.
However, the real reason to go is to get the opportunity to work with Coach Brian! He is patient and an excellent listener to your specific needs and I’ve seen him do this with every person who he is training, myself included. He is a superb motivator and will push you to excel, but never forgets that personal safety and good form are how goals are achieved. Above all of that, he’s an incredibly caring person with a “papa bear” mentality and a heart of gold who’s helping to build a community of athletes from all walks of life.
If you’re looking to achieve your goals from a guy who has his Master’s Degree in fitness and a lifetime of experience as an athlete professionally, but don’t want to do it in a place filled with “bro’s” and toxic gym culture, Steel City Barbell is where you want to be!

Steel City Barbell has completely changed the way I view the gym. I used to go to overcrowded and overpriced gyms with run down equipment. I never knew anything different. That was until I found SCBB. It has changed the way I view fitness. For the first time in my life, I look forward to working out. This is not only because of the wonderful facility and atmosphere, but also because of Coach Brian. Brian has done a fantastic job helping me work towards becoming a better version of myself. I would give them six stars if I could.

I've been a member of this gym for a year now, and it is HANDS DOWN the best environment, best value, and best place to train in the entire city.
The reason you will come back time and time again is the owner, Brian. He genuinely cares about your goals, your progress, your form, and you as a person. This gym is very unique, in that he is there during defined coaching hours, and you can ask him absolutely anything; from how to do a proper sit up, to the most complicated olympic lifts, protein intake, and everything in between. Brian will write you a unique program tailored to your needs and adapt it as you adapt. (Without breaking the bank either.)
The gym is big and there are rarely any conflicts over equipment. If you want something specialized, there's a good chance Brian will buy it. New equipment shows up at the gym all the time.
If you've never done barbell training, or if that intimidates you, do not fear! It is an extremely welcoming environment and there is plenty of traditional exercise equipment to meet your goals. Or if you want to explore barbell training for the first time, this is the place to go.

Ok I could write paragraphs...came to this gym after becoming one of "covid's carnage" ..could not walk, sit or stand and had to spend a total of 12 month in rehab with POTS and a form of Guillain-Barré. Met with Brian and started a specially designed program (by the way Brian is so huge and muscular he should be green!). This place is huge, spotless with all kinds of equipment. This is my 6th week and I am walking 5 to 10 miles daily and am rapidly regaining my muscles and strength. I am back to work full time again. Brian knows "exactly" how hard to push. I am soooooooo happy I found this place! This is far more beneficial than the 1 year of rehab! (I am 73 yrs old and female)

Great environment, people are clearly there to work. Equipment is very well maintained and the owner is very accessible. He’s definitely willing to put the time in for you and I enjoyed my time there. If you’re in need of a C2 erg, they have model D/E there with a PM5 monitor. Would definitely recommend to people who want to have a productive gym experience. Was never overly crowded while I was there, so you should be able to get your workout in efficiently without having to wait.

I first came to Steel City in 2021 for a competition. The place is beautiful but I live 75 miles away. I bought Brian's program for remote training which also allows me to stop by for face to face coaching. He has helped me achieve PAST my goals these 7 months and I cannot wait to continue working with him to see how far I can go with my Olympic weightlifting

What a great place to workout and hit your goals. Owner Brian sure makes you feel welcomed and motivated to train. Super easy to sign up and key less entry. Brian is a top notch trainer that was training athletes of all ages and skill levels the week I was in town for work. He knows how to motivate and is super encouraging. Parking is wide open and well lit. Thank you Brian for making an out of towner feel at home! Looking forward to my next visit.

I Highly recommend this gym and Brian. I had been experiencing a lot of hip pain, some days to the point it was challenging to do everyday tasks. In just two weeks with his knowledge in both therapy and training my hip has felt better than it has in 6 months. He is genuine and cares about his clients. Can’t say enough good about his work and this facility and am looking forward to continuing the plan he has put together for me.

I moved to Pittsburgh about a year ago and have been looking for a good weightlifting gym. I went to every gym in the area but nothing was quite right. I pushed this place off since the commute time killed me but I've been training for over a decade now (from general fitness to powerlifting and now olympic weightlifting) and have trained in multiple states across the US and Steel City is truly the best gym I've ever trained at.
Great olympic lifting gym whether you are seeking coaching or just want to use their open gym. Great coaches who actually work with you and know what they're doing - pushes you and keeps injury prevention in mind. And the programming freakin works! Positive environment, good people all around with many different fitness levels. Good mix of men and women and as a woman, I feel safe and comfortable training here and that has to count for something. Not just great for olympic lifting, they have what you need for powerlifting, strongman, or just general fitness. Clean, organized, well-managed facility. Just show up and you will be shook to see that a place like this actually exists. My commute is about an hour or more (depending on traffic or 20 mins without) and it is 1000% worth it every time.

I’ve been lifting with Brian for two weeks now and it’s been the best experience I could have ever asked for. I had no knowledge on how to lift correctly or even what exercises to pick, and since starting at this gym, I have felt very comfortable with what I can achieve with Brian’s help! I look forward to a long journey here!

I was very pleased while I was at Barbell being trained by a coach whom I had worked with at another gym. I found the owners friendly.
However, when my trainer found it necessary to leave to pursue further education, the owners continued to charge me for two additional months and refused to refund the $300 per month for unused sessions.

I've been training with this facility for a good while and I love their gym. I swapped to Brian Pirone for my training program and have never been happier. His workouts are tough, but extremely rewarding.
They feel more balanced than my previous trainer's, and they really tax the muscle groups they're targeting.
I've progressively gotten stronger through his program, and I can see the results in the mirror.
I highly recommend Brian as a trainer if you're looking to get strong and make progress towards your fitness goals.

My husband, daughter and I all attend Steel City Barbell. Coach Brian is super relatable and able to adapt his style to meet the needs of the individual lifters. Examples: Competitive lifters vs lifters who just want to stay fit, Masters athletes vs Juniors. The programming is well planned, thought out and is modified as needed for the lifter. The coaches have the ability to teach both technically and warmly all at the same time. Gym members are encouraging and friendly.

When my teenage daughter showed interest in Olympic weightlifting, we were very fortunate to have Brian Pirone there to see us through her introduction to the sport. Brian's extensive knowledge of proper technique related to safe and effective strength building put us at ease when it came to training our daughter. Brian's ability to relate to his students and effective communication was extremely beneficial in my daughter's understanding new movements. Through Coach Brian's expertise, instruction techniques, and continuous positive re-enforcements , we see our daughters confidence and overall athletic skills sky rocketing. Excited by what her future holds in part due to Brian Pirone's influence.

Brian is phenomenal. My son Nick (16 years old) started training with him back in December. He has made leaps and bounds when it comes to strength. It is not your typical one size fits all lifting program. Brian has developed a great program and the results are amazing. Brian takes the time to teach the correct way to lift and to make sure your form is correct, which to me is very important as I have seen a lot of injuries over the years as kids don't use correct form and just want to lift heavy weight.
The facility and equipment are first class. If you are looking to take your kid to the next level within their sport, this is the place to go to and train.
