I hate to sound cheesy and use cliché terms, but Fitness 500 has its very own “Dan the Man.” It started with him letting me borrow a phone charger during a workout, then helping me with my account, and even advising me on my membership. I could have gone to a cheaper gym, but I specifically chose to work out at Fitness 500 for this reason—because Dan goes above and beyond.

I wish more people had this kind of love for their job and clients. The whole gym is both personable and professional. This is why people come to Newport, and why they choose local gyms: they know you, they care about you, and they show exceptional dedication—even if you’re just running in real quick to check yourself in the mirror on the way to work.

You will not find a better gym or staff in Newport, RI, than Fitness 500.

Was in town for a week and need a good gym to go too and this one was perfect! Provided everything I needed. Wasn’t to big or to small, was never to crowded, and even has a smoothie bar. The staff was very polite. Will definitely be coming back!

Facilities and staff are nice but it tries to nickel and dime you for everything. Charges $3 (6.6% of its monthly fee) for losing your key card and forces you to buy a new one, $8 for towels a month, plus a ton of hidden fees...

Fitness 500 Newport is one of the nicest gyms I've ever been a member of! The equipment/machines are new and easy to use, and there is plenty of room for individual workouts. The trainers/staff are super nice and friendly. I definitely recommend being a member if you live in the area!

Gym is fine but feels like the kind of place that tries to nickel and dime you. Advertised as $45/month but that does not include the yearly fee, the joiner fee and the fact that they charge every 28 days instead of once a month. Billing every 28 days is a sneaky way to squeeze 13 billing cycles a year instead of 12. All in it comes out to average of ~ $60/month over the course of the year, so the $45/month price tag is very misleading. Also what gym charges for towels and sauna?

When I joined there was a promise of adding fitness classes, which is partially why i joined only to find out there was one yoga class a week.

I've been training with Matt and he's great! I was very uncomfortable about joining a gym and training...he makes it challenging enough that I get a good workout and feel good about it, and it's enjoyable enough that I learn something new every time and don't dread going. I have been in training with Matt in one-on-one sessions. He makes the workouts enjoyable. I get the knowledge and expertise from him at a very high level to fit my training needs. He varies the workouts to make them interesting and he pushes me to get the most out of the training. I really appreciate his focus on form and knowing when I am at my limit. He is truly a pleasure to work out with and I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for personal training.

I canceled a month to month membership in person and apparently they never recorded it. They sent a debt collector after me lol. I called them up and they said oh we don't remember that and there is no record so it's your problem. These people are so incompetent. Took 3 months for them to auto charge my card after three attempts and now I can't get them to stop trying to charge it. Also, one day an employee rudely accosted my friend for his membership lapsing mid workout. Later turned out was their own clerical error. RUN. Go anywhere else. Not worth the headeache.

High-end my arse! This place is awful.
Today I was asked to leave the gym and an employee threatened to call the police if I did not leave. I was asked to leave because I was using equipment in a space roped off by a trainer. This equipment is part of my PT and was not being used, unless the trainer sitting backwards on equipment is considered being used. I agreed to leave, grabbed my belongings out of the locker room, and took pictures of the scene. The trainer then started bashing and bullying, threatened again to call the police, and said I was threatening her. I agreed, she should call the police. And pot, kettle. I made no threats, I even said “smile” when I took pictures;) Don’t take my word for it, look at security video around 8:50am.
More fun facts. (1) The company sells locks for gym lockers; we bought two at separate times. The same key fits both locks. That’s secure! (2) After 5 months, they still can’t seem to get the billing straightened out to the point that it feels like harassment. The accounts are connected, no they’re not connected, okay they’re connected. Bipolar billing anyone? (3) All TVs show sports all the time. “They can’t show anything else. If they put on news, it’s too political.” What about food? Food is part of health and fitness. “We can’t put on food because then we have to keep changing the channel.” [Shrug.]
The only thing I like about this gym is that it is walking distance.

Great equipment, modern gym setup, very local feel, and a great staff (I've interacted with Jonathan and Anthony a lot and they always been professional, pleasant, and helpful).

Stay away. My wife signed up pre-construction and quit her other gym. She hung on through all the delays because they advertised fitness classes. That never happened. The sauna they highlighted was extra. When my wife tried to discuss a discounted cancellation fee with the GM Anthony he demeaned her and berated her in front of other customers. She came home crying. If you want to know the kind of unprofessional character Anthony is, just read his defensive and juvenile responses to negative reviews. There are better choices in Newport.

I was pumped when this gym first opened as I had high hopes but unfortunately after giving it a try, I realized it wasn't for me and returned to the YMCA. The Hoist machines they purchased move as you work out, which felt very unnatural and more of a CrossFit motion. This motion made it impossible for me to get a good workout in. I also locked into a cheap price before they opened but they quickly started charging extra for the full use of their gym, towels, sauna, etc. I felt very mislead with what they pitched as a "risk free trial" and when I went to cancel, I was given an extremely hard time before being charged a hefty cancelation fee. I'd personally recommend looking at other gyms in the area before giving this one a try.

I’ve been coming here since their opening in February and it’s one of the nicest gyms I’ve been too. Never too crowded and the equipment is brand new and very well maintained. They have bumper plates, dumbbells, kettlebells and plenty of space to accommodate whatever your training needs are. The staff is very friendly and helpful and the facility is always clean. Also can’t beat the price point!

Clean/modern gym w/ top of the line equipment. Staff are very friendly and helpful and so far patrons have been using good gym etiquette. I highly recommend scheduling a fitness test with Cam-he is an incredibly knowledgeable trainer with experience in functional fitness and good PT techniques. Fantastic all around facility and crew!

The equipment is very nice, but the monthly fee was quite misleading. Using a towel will cost $8 dollars, using the sauna will be $25 per half hour. During the tour it was implied that all of these amenities were included. Just wanted to let everyone know.
