Gary Karten E-RYT-500 Certified Yoga Instructor -I began my yoga journey in 1990 while studying Martial Arts. Yoga brought me to understand the power of healing after some serious injuries from competition in Tae Kwon Do. This journey opened my eyes to what I was searching for - I realized that yoga was the direction I needed to go full time to heal all the injuries that impacted my body. To find a full mind and body connection through this practice, Yoga. In 2007 I began my true yoga journey and realized the huge benefits of yoga. With the proper teaching & guidance, anyone is capable of healing through yoga practice. I began teaching immediately in 2007.

Gary creates a welcoming opportunity for people to check in, to get real with their breath and with their thoughts. He translates his extensive yoga experience into a highly accessible class that is simultaneously challenging and deeply satisfying. With a steady focus on healing from physical injuries and from life, this is trauma-informed yoga. His classes are a gift

These very enjoyable classes are quite challenging. I drop in once a year while visiting the Quonny area. I don't practice yoga regularly but have taken classes from time to time. Gary emphasizes breathing and steady movement with long holds to encourage healing. I feel some aches and pains start to go away after just 5 or so classes over a couple of weeks. Held in a community hall with lots of natural light and air. Blocks, straps, blankets provided. Mats available for rental.

I have been going to Quonny Yoga for 3 years and practicing with Gary has made a wonderful difference in my life and body. The emphasis on breath work transforms the practice allowing me to connect deeply with my body and stay out of my head. Gary skillfully guides the class through poses, ensuring that we pay attention to the specific parts of our bodies involved in each movement. His insightful cues help enhance awareness of alignment making each pose feel more intentional. He focuses on the synergy between the breath, physicality and mindfulness which elevates the overall yoga experience!

Just took a yoga class with Gary.
Gary is a diamond in the rough.
I didn’t want the glossy studio or perfect poses.
I wanted the real thing—the roots, the philosophy.
Not yoga as performance, but yoga as presence.
Gary taught like he lived it.
Simple, grounded, wise.
He reminded us—
The breath is the thread that holds it all.
So many studios forget that.
But not Gary.
He brought us home to ourselves
through something as ancient and sacred
as breathing.

It's nice to start the day with the summer beach class (I found it to be more relaxing than a sweaty vinyasa) in the sand.

I discovered Quonny Yoga in Charlestown, R.I. by seeing a notice in the Westerly Library stating they were holding a free class there. This was about a year ago and it has turned out to be a great experience for me. Gary and Wendy are hands on with individual attention to poses when needed. The classes are well paced and informative. Gary is committed to enriching your yoga experience by offering classes that focus on specific areas of your practice. They are the true embodiment for enhancing your practice.

Yoga with Gary is such a great experience. He openly shares his vast knowledge and expertise as a yoga instructor. During the class he provides a lot of individual instruction for both beginners and the more experienced yoga students. I love that he offers pranayama and meditation. Not all yoga teachers focus so much on breathing. I think that is what makes this practice stand out. I feel that each class targets asanas that make for a complete yoga experience with the breath work.
His cues help to keep focus and enhance the pose. They also seem to target exactly what I’m needing in the moment.
The studio is In a community Grange which has a nice big room to accommodate all students very comfortably.

Quonny Yoga is an amazing yoga experience -- it's great for beginners but also terrific for seasoned, experienced yoga practitioners. The hour and a half classes allow for a total yoga workout. And the focus on deep breathing is the key to an excellent, holistic yoga practice. Beginners can pick up on the breathing patterns right away, while the experienced "up-level" yoga students continually find new ways to connect to deeper breathing. The breathing practice is so useful for reducing stress in everyday life -- and also essential to any physical exercise. Gary is an amazing yoga instructor -- super knowledgeable, clear, helpful, patient, inspiring, and fun! His regular classes are awesome, and everyone leaves feeling her or his best. Gary's private classes are well worthwhile; his individual attention is so valuable and instructive. And the two-hour yoga workshops are incredibly useful. Wendy (a wonderful yoga instructor herself) makes Quonny Yoga a warm, welcoming, relaxing, and happy place. Bottom line: try Quonny Yoga, it is simply the best! You will want to make Quonny Yoga your permanent place for yoga classes.

I always feel great after taking a class at Quonny yoga. Gary is a top notch yoga instructor with obvious talent and experience. He always takes time before and after class to assist and answer any questions that you may have. Wendy his other half always greet you with kind words and the best smile. I cannot say enough about quonny yoga and if you’re looking to practice in and around Charlestown Rhode Island make it your choice!

Quonny yoga is a great yoga resource. Wendy and Gary are both very welcoming! Their studio is located near Burlingame campground which I go to each year with my family. As an avid yogi it was nice to have a place to practice yoga while on vacation. I'm grateful for the work that they do.

Several years ago, I took up a form of Hatha Yoga at an ashram. I have been practicing on and off since then. In the interim, I have taken several stateside classes and while enjoyable, not old school yoga. Quonny Yoga as created by Gary Karten is the real deal. Gary knows the human body, how its parts work, how they optimally interrelate and be healed. Practicing with Gary is a journey into physcial and spiritual balance and healing. I heartily recommend it.

I had been doing yoga for close to 25 years, and started out with very good teachers in New York City. Here in southern RI highly educated, knowledgeable and experienced teachers are not an easy find, yet there is one here: Gary Karten and his Quonny Yoga. His classes are about deeply connecting with your body in order to free you of not just physical but also emotional and spiritual restrictions and imbalances in life. Gary is very knowledgeable about the workings of the body and has a reputation, which is well deserved, for especially helping his students in healing physical injuries. He guides you not just into the pose but throughout it with a special emphasis on breath work in order to not let your monkey mind get a hold of you and to release tension. In my case, after less than 10 sessions, a 3 year old knee injury started healing when no medical or physical therapy approach had helped before. His studio space is very comfortable and peaceful - an atmosphere created to get in touch with your deepest, purest being. I highly recommend his classes.
