This place is a dump. I don’t know how they don’t get shut down. I recently moved to East Greenwich and I signed up for a day pass to check it out, but when I showed up for my appointment, nobody was there. They even gave me a phone # to call if I had issues entering, so I called several times for 30 minutes but nobody answered. Finally, I was able to enter with a member, and the equipment is broken or old. The place is dirty, there is water coming down from broken pipe, showers are not very clean. There is no motivation to workout in a place like this one. Save your money and don’t pay their overpriced membership because there are better places in town.

This gym has enough things for people to do however, they are old, run down, and broken. Staff does not want to fix it or replace it. They either leave it like that, or put a sign for a long time that it’s “out of order”.
Very unorganized gym. Almost no staff. What happens if this gym has an emergency? They likely won’t do much. The staff is a strict uncaring staff. They have lots of policies for things however, they don’t do anything. They don’t wanna fix the steam room. Took along time to fix the water fountain. I onetime asked the front desk when they plan on fizzing the steam room, there response was “never, very expensive, a lot of work, and we need to hire a plumber to fix it”. This shows the lack of money this gym has right now. They need to hire staff to help this place succeed. They don’t want staff at the front desk nor no trainers
This gym should be a 24/7 gym. You have to swipe a card to get in rather than just walk in.
This gym has been going down for a while. Once a customer is past time when it closes, all lights turn off and the place gets really dark.
I was told I can put my membership on freeze, however it was not on freeze. It was still active and I got charged. I had to cancel it right away and not get charged. They did nothing.
Another thing that is bad about the gym is they have the coldest sauna ever. The hottest it has ever hit was 125 degrees Fahrenheit. They probably don’t wanna fix the heat inside the sauna.
They are staffed very limited hours that if you call the place, they may not answer. If you try waiting at the door for a worker to let you in, it may not happen.
The positive things I have about this gym is the customers you can meet here, has enough equipment to use, and it’s not super busy. The price is pretty good for this type of place.
You can find better gyms than this

I’ve been a member since 2012 when it was OSHF. When ownership changed to renegade and the facility received new paint, new machines and racks, and an updated layout I was hopeful that this gym would continue to be an incredible gym at an incredible price. This place has unfortunately turned to a POS.
They installed a 24 hour door that requires members to swipe their card at the door to even get in but the gym doesn’t operate 24 hours so this just adds hassle to members who’s key card won’t work or forgotten at home and the hours of operation are not ideal. Much of the equipment needs maintenance done to it, the machines are terrible and we’re clearly selected by someone that doesn’t workout. The carpet has been bolted down into the concrete in the areas where it was coming up which looks terrible, the bathrooms don’t work, the showers are gross, they don’t have locks on one of the stalls, there’s been a urinal that hasn’t worked for a year, the paper towels and cleaner for cleaning the equipment is rarely restocked. The list is even longer but I think my point is made. This is all with a raised monthly fee from what it used to be, which although cheap ($32.99/month) compared to other options is not equal to what you’re getting from this place. On top of all that there is a yearly maintenance fee, meanwhile there has been little to no maintenance done on anything other than vacuuming in years. Things were slightly better when the place was consistently staffed and they weren’t trying to sell the place, now this gym has somehow found room to get worse and has hit actual rock bottom. I would love to stay here and I’m sad to leave because this gym made me learn to like fitness and lifting weights when I joined at 18 years old, and I’ve been hear through college, career changes, relationships, getting married, having a child, I’ve made friends with many people here, etc. it’s been a major part of my life. I’ll be cancelling my membership and going to a new gym after 13 years, at least then my money will go towards keeping a gym clean and maintained. If I had the money I would gladly purchase this place myself and turn it back to what it was when it was OSHF.

It's not a bad gym. Some of the equipment could be worked on to make it work properly, not just getting by. My biggest complaint is the hours! Why is the barcode access scanner on the outside of the building and the hours still 5am-9pm weekdays and 7-5 saturdays 7-3 Sundays!?!? The "limited staff" excuses are bogus because staff is hardly there during those hours. As a matter of fact, every time I've been in there on a Sunday, there hasn't been a staff member there at all, so why limit the hours? There are several people I've worked with who said they wanted a membership there but won't join because of the hours.

The water fountain was broken a year ago and it’s still broken. A stair climber was also broken and is still broken and now the only other one has also broke. To get in it’s a key fob system, so you would assume if you get there before the door locks for the night you can finish out your workout (like any other gym with a key fob). Nope. If you’re working out when it hits the closing hour the lights just shut off. Had no idea about this until in the middle of a heavy set at 3 o’clock on a Sunday. And the gym goes pitch black. Talk about extremely dangerous. And why would you allow someone to walk in until 3 but not allow them an hour for a workout. Also very rude staff at the desk, overheard them talking about members personal business and making a rude remark about the people of East Greenwich. Definitely off putting as someone who lives there and is obviously within ear shot. It has potential to be a good gym, but they don’t put any money back into it.

One of the most poorly managed gyms in the area and operates on entirely bad faith.
My experience: I resigned my "no commitment" membership at the beginning of August and continued to get charged. This might have something to do with their cancelation process being a Google Form that exports to a spreadsheet... very professional.
So, I went into the gym to confirm my cancelation and was told that, not only had my membership not been cancelled, but, despite my non-commitment membership, I would be charged a substantial $70 fee for cancelation in addition to at least one more $35 monthly charge. Not $25, as I agreed to pay an additional $10 more per month than standard membership to be "free of commitment".
The manager said that this cancelation scheme is in the contract but she conveniently failed to mention such a set-up at the time I signed up (over a year ago). Calling it "non commitment" implies that I was retaining the ability to walk away despite my reasoning or circumstances. The manager had actually recommended this membership when I told her I move a lot for work, selling me on the promise of not being tethered to this gym.
A monetary commitment, whether by cancelation fees or lagging cancelation (or in this case both), is by all means a commitment and this is plain old dishonesty on Renegade's part. Just because Renegade defines commitment in fine print to mean the opposite of its conventional definition doesn't make what they're doing okay. They are intentionally misleading people. I trusted them and they tried shaking me down, going as far as to hire a debt collector! They are shamelessly scheming for money.
The gym itself is evidence of their disgusting profit hunger... they don't even have a functioning water fountain! The desk is often unattended, when it is the staff member is preoccupied by their phone. The bathrooms smell like urine and give the impression of not having been cleaned in some time. The poor hours, limited sq. footage and lack of modern equipment make this gym worth at most $10/month. The only benefit is that it's not often crowded, which must a result of word getting around... worst gym around!

Avoid this gym at all costs! They have been trying to rip myself and my son off now for over a year. We signed up while he was in college and then canceled when he switched and they have been trying to bill us for over $250 now for a year and a half. We canceled the membership but they continue to bill us and now have us with a debt collector. A complete and utter rip-off, unscrupulous, steer clear of this company and this gym. All they care about is your money, and the fact that they are still trying to bill us for a gym membership where we have not been in the gym in almost 2 years is comical. It's gym's like this that give the industry a bad name.
Everyone associated with this place should be ashamed of themselves.

2 Years ago, I left a 5 star review for this place. Since then, with new management, this place is garbage. New manager sits on her phone at the front desk the whole day and just policies all the members who come in. The gym has all the equipment, but is small at the end of the day, which is why their new monthly rates are absurd. Not worth going here anymore for the price they are charging. This used to be a lowkey, affordable local gym with managers and staff who were into fitness. It just seems like a bunch of Hogwash now

Not enforcing mask policy.
Too many people don't wear masks
I posted the above months ago and the situation remains unchanged as of1/21. Unfortunately, it is mostly young people who continue to pose a risk to all others. The staff, whom are nice folks who do wear masks, don't confront or instruct the non mask wearers.

As stated by many others on the Groton, Waterford, and New London pages, they will try and nickel and dime you on every possible technicality when cancelling. My wife and I both cancelled in March and were informed we would have to pay April as well due to a nonsense rule they have about providing 30 days of notice to cancel, even though after one year of membership your contract is month to month. For instance, if you cancel March 2nd, they'll charge you for the entirety of March and April. In addition to that, my wife 'froze' her membership, while the gym was still Ocean State, which they allow members to do as she wasn't really using the gym. When we cancelled in March we were assured we would only be charged for April, however my wife was also charged for May! It's not the small monthly membership we are upset about, but the principle of how Renegade, the corporate office specifically, deals with customers. Unsurprisingly, there was a mass exodus when Renegade took over and we now see why! I feel sorry for the existing employees from the Ocean State era as this is not their fault and they are now put in a tough spot.
To make things worse Renegade is not even the gym we originally signed up for as they bought the location of Ocean State and basically put their stamp on it. The flashy equipment may seem nice, but the customer service is terrible! It is now obvious why their flagship location in Waterford is rated 1.9/5 at the time of this review!
Couldn't be any happier to have switched to Next Level Fitness in Johnston, RI. Please know this is an indictment on Renegade as a company, not the original Ocean State Health and Fitness.

This place is actually a scam. I have been trying to cancel my membership for ALMOST A FULL YEAR. they are impossible to get a hold of, no one i speak to has been helpful about this. i have sent in 3 letters with proof that i have moved, am promised that my account is cancelled, and here i am STILL getting charged. I actually think this gym is just a scam because its so impossible to leave the membership. At this point they have stole almost 200 dollars from me. DO NOT GO TO THIS GYM.

This is a great gym! There is so much equipment to choose from that there is no chance for boredom - ever! The staff is very friendly and helpful, answering any questions you may have when trying something new. Another plus is the cleanliness. Super clean, no odors anywhere. During downtime, staff even clean, in addition to the regular cleaning crew. It's priced competitively and popular, but there is no problem getting on the equipment of your choice. I love it!

What an amazing unleashed HIIT work out with Wendy. It was a small group workout and a blast! I have never trained in a group, but this was different! It was like personal training, because she kept attention on every single person throughout the workout. I was drenched! The gym is so cool and clean. The staff was really friendly too. Check out this "unleashed" workout thing... It's nothing like I have ever seen.

I moved from the area and needed to cancel membership months after my contract expired. To cancel any membership, a certified memo that you have to draft is needed to be sent to the company HQ in CT. Not only that, while I was a member I ended up getting a membership to Planet Fitness as Renegade Fitness equipment is 2 decades dated and the locker room is absolutely disgusting-- stench.

This gym suddenly restarted a membership that my daughter had when it was Ocean State. No warning, just started hitting my credit card for the fee. Came up with some line about it was only "on hold" and the hold time ran out and restarted the membership. Then was told a registered letter to Waterford was required to cancel. I put a request in that letter to verify that my letter was received, which was never sent. Then, to my surprise, we were hit with another month's dues, with the sorry excuse of a 30 day cancellation period, which was never stated prior.
I would never consider joining anything run by or related to this organization

The transition from OSHF to Renegade has been interesting. I work out M-F and the staff is always friendly and helpful. The new equipment is more than sufficient for me to do what I need to do. However, I am not a fan of the new elipticals. The stair climbers are awesome, and the treadmills are very nice as well. Most of the bikes are recumbent, which I am not a fan of. However, they do have a couple of Expresso bikes, which I love, but they still need to connect them to the internet. There are plenty of free weights and machines, with most of them brand spanking new. The class room is available to train when not in use by a group and this a very nice feature so that you are not limited on what you can do on a daily basis. I use it to perform combat ropes. The steam room is the best! The Showers need a bit of work, and need to be cleaned more often and better. However, one of the biggest strengths of this gym is the members. There are a lot of folks that have been going for years and you see a lot of the same faces daily. It is one of the most welcoming, friendliest gyms I have ever attended. The new group needs to tidy up a few loose ends, but all in all a very good gym that provides a place where all abilities can get their gym on.

Renegade East Greenwich is an awesome gym! The new equipment and renovations are great! The new machines for upper body promote good body mechanics which helps to avoid injuries and strain on the back! All of the staff members are super friendly and encouraging to ensure you have a great work out!! They offer a free session of personal training when you sign up for a membership. I signed up for 12 sessions and have been working with one of their trainers, Wendy Goodine, for a total of 10 sessions thus far! She is awesome! She is enthusiastic about what she does by being highly involved in the latest workout regimens and a healthy lifestyle including clean eating! She has trained me with the most dynamic, unique exercise circuits I've ever done! A 30 minute session with her and I leave red dripping sweat! Never a repeat in any of her workouts and she tailors it specifically to her clients! She leads by example and admire her hard work and dedication as a trainer! She is very knowledgeable and great at what she does!! Needless to say, I highly recommend her as a trainer! I've thoroughly enjoyed working out at Renegade East Greenwich and would recommend it to anyone!!!
