So I grew up with the South County YMCA which I would frequently refer to my 2nd Home. After all it was always just a few blocks away and I used to walk or ride my bike there and go exercise or shoot hoops etc with friends when I wasn't at Wrestling practice or Cross Country. After Graduating college at URI, focusing on career and having Kids this place is again begun to fill a place in my life. I have a big family and I imagine that more of my family members and/or friends will continue to ReDiscover it over time. It's amazing occasionally even when I travel the YMCA is there. My oldest Daughter had an awesome time at summer camp this past summer. I can see why it has its own song, haha. Thank you! Thank you! Very grateful to all the staff over the years and everybody who contributes to this place that really does continue to make the community better for having been here:)

They completely shut down the locker room for an HOUR to clean them, in the middle of the day. At any other workout facility, they are not shut down, patrons can still get in there. I only have a specific amount of time and days to be there and i am sure there are others, and shutting it down, shortens my workout. Common sense would be to clean in sections, block off showers, clean them then open; block off bathroom, clean them then open them, etc. This would allow people to still be able to get in the locker room. And due to shutting them down, the family locker rooms get filled up and are also not useable. Sometimes people don't have the luxury to wait or change times. I have an autistic child that i need to pick up.

Maybe add a few more machines to the 30 minute room.

The gym is okay and fine for working out if that is all you are looking to do. We signed up looking for activities for our 2 and 4 year old to do. The child care room has tons of toys and the girl working there was good. We had been looking into swim lessons for a while and keep getting a run around. Each time they make it sound like they are almost ready to start lessons and then follow up with a need for staffing to get it going. We signed our four year old up for a ninja obstacle class. The description stated it was a six week program however it really was only four weeks. We received email confirmation that the class was at 10:15. When we arrived the person at the front told us we were late and the class was just ending and started at 9:30. We showed the email confirmation which they didn’t really have an answer for. We stopped by the class and the teacher apologized and offered to stay late and let our son do the course with him. This gym seems to hire good employees however they are completely incompetent when it comes to planning/management. We were with them for less than a month before canceling our membership and deciding to drive to the Westerly YMCA. They seemed to have way more for kids activities.

Hands down the dirtiest ymca I’ve ever been to. It’s disgusting. The pool area is unacceptable, the floors are covered in dirt, trash, and leaves.

Gym is great but hours are horrible. Have to rush here from 9-5 job because they don’t open past 6:30 and that’s only on weekdays. Half of the big gym with the turf is filled with punching bags but they don’t even have any gloves for you to use.

Great facility for a good gym workout or a good swim. Well planned pool usage provides multiple times for lap swim as well as water exercisers. Front desk, gym staff and life guards are helpful and professional. I needed help with something last week and found the administration and front desk staff to be OUTSTANDING!

There is now a larger space in the YMCA with a variety of popular strength training equipment, useful for all ages. I never needed to wait for a piece of equipment. I have not had this experience with other facilities in the area. I now appreciate the high ceilings and open space since we are aware of the importance of ventilation thanks to covid. Staff and members are vigilant about cleanliness of the equipment. Members wear masks and maintain physical distance at this time. What a great place!

I live near the South County YMCA only part of the year and am so grateful they allow me to share my membership with my home YMCA. I have contributed financially to their fundraising campaign to thank them for this. I do not use the gym so I cannot speak to that. But I have used the pool and the workout center. I am pleased with both and am always able to get my fitness needs met. The pool is a little older, but clean and it serves its purpose well. I think the staff does a great job of trying to plan for all the activities it must while giving lap swimmers adequate time to swim. The workout room seems very nice to me; the treadmills are fantastic and the equipment there is newer. The womens' locker room is ALWAYS clean and tidy as are the showers. Absolutely no complaints from me. I have always found the staff to be extremely welcoming and friendly; very gracious. Yes, it's an older facility and some parts may need a makeover. That's why I can't give this YMCA five stars. But makeovers and buildings and labor to do that is expensive. It require a long-term plan, capital campaigns, and all of us "Y" users to pitch in as benefactors.

The gym is a disgrace. The floor is a rubber type on top of concrete and has never been replaced since it was built in the 80's. These floors need to be redone every 5 years. They use the gym for storage and it is dangerous to play basketball because you could run into lockers or children's play equipment. The roof leaks in many places in the building. They have a room for yoga that has a disgusting rug. They clearly don't know what they're doing.

I love the fact, that I have found my way back to the "Y".
The facility has been kept up. Machines all in tip top shape, the facility is very clean, and all personnel are great, and helpful.
Thanks everybody.
BUT, one thing: the status of your driveway as it runs in to Broad Rock Road, is NOT acceptable. Even for Rhode Island! The Pot Hole Champion
of the US....
It is bad enough for me to write this letter, and I am a pretty easygoing
person.
To day, when I left the Y, trying to maneuver my car in a slow motion slalom to avoid the biggest holes, in order to avoid damage to my car (and myself). I must have miscalculated somehow, went in to a defect in the road resulting in the loss of my grip on the steering wheel.
As my speed was ca, 2-3 mph, no damage done, apart from the jolt.
I hate to think of myself as 'a little old lady' I guess I am @ 70, SMILES.
Is there anything I can do, to get the repair done?
Sincerely, I Philbrick.
PS. I love you guys. And thanks again

Extensive construction is causing a lot of inconvenience to the members. The place is disorganized and the employees do not seem to know what is going on. It takes forever to get a trainer to call you back. If it weren't for the pool, I would join another club. The Y is well intentioned, but sometimes just not worth the trouble.

They have all brand new, top quality, cardio machines. But there aren't enough of them. When it's busy they will limit you to 30 mins. on the machine.

Always a hassle. Always. We had a family membership years ago. We cancelled that membership since we weren't using it, yet we continued to be charged. It took several months to finally straighten that out. Then they offered an after pre-school program at our daughter's preschool which worked out great. When they didn't offer it this year at the pre-school, we tried the program at the Y facility. Mistake. They don't seem to have a good handle on the children who are in the pre-school and they mix children of different ages, sizes, and behaviors together. Additionally, there isn't a lot of supervision from the other programs being run so children and "instructors" are separated. My wife actually had to watch over a group of 6 children after the "instructor" went missing for 20 minutes - no explanation. So we cancelled the pre-school and requested to be reimbursed for the week they pre-charged. No response. Left several messages - still no response.

Not the cleanest locker rooms/facility overall. Maybe because the building is older. Communication is AWFUL. Schedule will tell you once thing and then you show up and find out the opposite. Especially problematic when relying on the day care. Nothing worse than showing up for a work out with your kids and finding out the day care is closed despite being listed on website as open. VERY DISORGANIZED. Extremely disappointed when making comparison to other YMCA's. And what's up with paying for coffee?!
