My son DJ(16) has been part of the Capital Karate Family for 11yrs now. We started off like many parents looking for somewhere to get out some energy for our little one. Somewhere to learn discipline and build some confidence. We also were looking for a safe space for him as he has special medical needs. He is a Type 1 Diabetic and when his blood sugar is low he needs to sit out and Capital Karate has been so supportive in his journey and getting to know what he needs. I watched over the years as he started he was like a wiggly little worm and now you can see the strength he has gained. His little wobbly kicks are now strong intentional kicks. He has had to learn patience, especially during covid and his black belt testing was pushed back. He was ready for it and had to step back and get himself back into wanting it and he did. He learned what hard work was when training for his first degree black belt and then again when he started training for his second degree black belt. He had to learn to set goals and achieve them. His next goal is his third degree black belt and also one day be an instructor himself. His confidence has grown and is something they are always helping him build. He is part of their Ally program and I have watched DJ and others stand up in front of the class and lead. It isn’t as easy as one would think and these kids are receiving amazing training and support. He is learning work ethic via the Ally program, helping with movie nights, birthdays and summer camps. He has to remember all those kids' names which he is constantly working on, all the forms, to be able to instruct and observe what students are doing and if they need help, and so much more. He has learned discipline, compassion for others, has gained friendships, found mentors and has become a mentor. Everything he has learned and continues to learn he also has applied to outside the studio. He is a great young man. He is helpful around the house, he holds doors open, would give his shirt off his back to a stranger. His teachers always have glowing reviews for him. He is an honor roll student and works really hard and has goal set. I have watched him grow on and off the mat. I am thankful to Capital Karate as they have always supported DJ in everything he does and encourage him to be his best.

Capital Karate has been great for our daughter. We never suspected that she’d be interested in trying karate, let alone be enthusiastic about it. But she tried it on a whim, loved it immediately and has been going almost every day since. All the folks at Capital Karate are great and really motivating and, as a consequence, she seems to have become more self-confident and is WAY more into physical fitness. We were first Introduced to Mr. Andrew through Heathwood Hall, he came to do classes once a week to the after school kids. I can't say enough great things about the Capital Karate family! We found them at just the right time when our son needed them the most. His confidence increased exponentially within one lesson at Capital Karate! He speaks up more in class. He stood up for a younger kid at his elementary school.--He didn't have to get physical, but he had the confidence to speak up for the little kid who was about to get bullied. He is more intentional about doing his chores, helping out around the house and keeping his grades up so he can keep going to classes. All of these are things that can be traced directly back to the influence of Capital Karate because they encourage the development of the all-around individual beyond the karate skills. We love our karate family! We started about 2 years ago with our son and our daughter soon wanted to join in on the fun right after. The instructors are amazing and make it fun. At first I was timid in this activity because he is special needs and has Down Syndrome. Enrolling my son into Capital Karate has been one of the greatest decisions his father and I ever made. This school is perfect for my daughter. She is part of the Lil' Dragons class and has been with Capital Karate for about 2 years. The instructors are phenomenal, especially with children. They work through behavioral issues with this age group and do a fantastic job of encouraging and building kids up so that their self-confidence can start at an early age. They also incorporate real life scenarios and fundamental social skills into their weekly lessons (how to be a good friend, listening and focusing skills, anti-bullying, etc.). Mr. Mike is a wonderful instructor who cares about the student's development as both a martial artist and a person. He's passionate about and dedicated to the martial arts and he does not fall short in his experience as both a student of martial arts with over two decades of experience and an instructor (17 years experience). I served with Michael in a combat zone during OIF. He was the epitome of. The term Warrior. During our limited rest time, Michael would seemless untiringly volunteer his vast knowledge of combat skills and train women in self defense skills and would teach combat fighting skills to Americans , Australians, Japanese and Koreans on his own time. He was a great leader, warrior and ambassador for the U.S. He was always enthusiastic and eager to pass on his knowledge. My son began taking Karate lessons in the first grade when members of the Capital Karate staff came to his elementary school one day a week. After about a year, he further challenged himself and began taking more intense classes at Capital Karate itself. Throughout the years, he learned self-confidence, discipline, and most importantly the knowledge that he could set a goal and complete it. He received his black belt several years ago, and it remains one of his proudest accomplishments. I would heartily recommend Capital Karate for any individual, young or old, who strives for excellence.

Where to begin, our son loves Capital Karate! We started out with the after school program at school , have had and been to several parties there and has been going to karate classes at Capital Karate for 5 months, now. Not to mention the summer camps and holiday camps, plus all the movie nights, that Parker and his friends have been to! We love how the staff and teachers, truly care about the kids and want them to succeed and do their best! Mr Charlie and Mr D, along with Mr Mike and the rest of the staff, are such great guys and are wonderful with the kids!

I started taking classes at Capital Karate to learn self-defense. After a few months, not only have I learned how to better protect myself, the classes have given me a great stress outlet and a fun way to stay in shape. My two boys have been in Karate with Mr Mike & Mr Andrew since the day they started school at Hammond - over 4 years ago. This year, the boys and I joined full time working our way to a black belt. Attending classes every M-W-F, we have been introduced to the rest of Mr Mikes stellar crew: Mr D., Mr Charlie, Mr Kyle, and Mrs Caitlin. I was nervous about starting Karate with my aging body and full schedule (full time work & full time school - & full time Mom), but they all have been so accommodating and understanding. I actually look forward to getting sore and exhausted each class. Knowing it is what my body needs, that it will help with my personal & professional life, and extend my health thus allowing me to have more time with my boys. Speaking of, Mr Mike has incorporated some of this play time in for me, not only in class, but afterwards with Movie Night. My boys have participated in Movie Night, which has become so popular it has doubled in frequency, over the last 4 years. This give me 4 hours of free time to spend with my Husband, aiding me in keeping a balanced life.

I have been an adult student for around 5 years. (I am on the north side of 50) I have taken a couple of breaks from working with Mike and his staff (little things like a motorcycle wreck got in the way.) I keep coming back. My wife always tells me the best exercise is the one you are willing to do. I am preparing now for my black best test, it is amazing how quickly time has passed.

The workouts are challenging, the self defense instruction realistic and usable. The Karate forms are explained and gradually progress in difficulty, so you develop the skills you need by the time you need them.

All of the staff are professional and approachable. I have never been turned away when I have asked for extra instruction or pointers. I can't sail through the air like a 19 year old, but the classes and forms are doable.

There is a focus on sparring. Sparring is a point based light to moderate contact fight. This gives you the opportunity to practice what you are learning. You and your opponent wear padded protective gear so the risk of injury is very low. You develop timing and learn to see and react to aggression in a controlled environment. It is also a phenomenal workout.

If you are looking for a fun environment where everyone including the school owner and head instructor are approachable. Where the other students are friendly and encouraging - this is the best place in the city of Columbia.

I have both of my grandchildren in Karate with Mr. Mike, Mr. Charlie, Mr. D, Mr. Kyle and Ms. Caitlin. The staff are super good with the children. They make learning fun. They instill good manners, good learning habits and promote self-confidence in the children. Not only do they teach the children how to protect themselves, they also offer a "Movie Night" for the children where they are fed pizza, watch a movie and play karate games for 4 hours once a month on a Friday night. It's a night out for the parents where the kids are having a great time, making new friends and enjoying a movie while the parents enjoy a night out knowing the children are well taken care of. I cannot praise this group of young people enough.
