We have tried various team sports with little to no success or interest, but our 9 year old has found a home at Carolina Karate. While they learn great skills and techniques in Karate, the biggest take away is Respect, Confidence, and overall wellbeing! Sensei Tommy Hood runs an amazing dojo. He staff and students are so energized when they train. It was my son's first time training with Sensei Hood and he was treated like he had been part of his family. Everyone encouraging and high fiving each other. Great atmosphere! We have been thrilled with our experience at Carolina Karate! My 6-year-old son loves the classes and has learned so much already. The class sizes are small, and the schedule is very flexible. The optional competition classes, family classes, and parents' night out are a great bonus as well!

My son has been going to Carolina Karate since 2021 and I'd 100% say he's become a better person for it. I love that they greet you with a smile and a hello, looking you in the eyes. It's an uplifting "light" atmosphere.
Sensei Hood has helped my son develop into a person he can be proud of mentally, physically, emotionally, down to integral character - which is what matters at the end of the day (we are proud of him as well, but it's nice when your teenager is proud of the decisions they have made personally). Example: he was given homework to do the dishes at home and that is something he has continued to do. He was challenged to go outside and be present, and mindful...these are amazing life lessons that my son has brought home beyond just building a martial arts skill. I've watched his posture change from "gamer" to athlete!
When Sensei Hood instructs the class it brings another level to the dojo that I see my son coming home with areas in him being challenged that bring energy and encouragement to him. My son looks up to him and respects him and has learned so many life lessons from him along with developing strength and a skill.
As parents, any time we've asked to meet with Sensei he's made time to schedule a one on one meeting to talk about my sons progress and areas he needs to work on developing. He's worked with our family as a team to help my son become the best version of himself.
Senpai Zaylin has been an example for my son to look up to and has also been a huge part of helping him learn and develop, making the process fun. He's an excellent instructor and the students adore him and want to be like him.
While learning a new skill is fun and important I really appreciate that the instructors at this dojo help people develop as a whole. They don't tell you "what you should be" or "what to think." They help you develop a skill and along the way encourage you to know HOW to think better and become better as a unique individual.
We are incredibly grateful for Carolina Karate! Thank you for all you do for my son and for our community!

I can’t imagine a better karate experience than the one provided by Carolina Karate. The instructors are highly qualified and skilled, and care so much about the students. There is a generous instructor to student ratio. They know my child’s name and always ask him about his day. They care about my child’s advancement and celebrate his successes. The instructors maintain an appropriate and encouraging amount of expectation for the students during class time, meaning that students work to their highest potential. Classes emphasize respect for each other and are free from distractions. While my child feels the whole class is fun, there are sometimes extra fun games toward the end of a class. We always look forward to Karate nights. My child has gained so much in martial arts skills, and we are so pleased with all he has learned and how he has advanced. He also has learned manners and skills that carry over into other parts of his life. Carolina Karate is truly a family atmosphere where each child’s person and potential is valued.

Quite simply the best dojo around. Our 9 year absolutely loved the structure, class size, and community that is developed within each class. As a parent, you can’t beat the pricing. Also the ability to leave your child there during class to run a few errands is a great plus. The entire staff is great!
Our family has been with Carolina Karate for two years now and we have enjoyed every second. It started with our son, then soon after our daughter saw how much fun the classes were and she decided to join. Not long ago my husband joined the adult classes and before long our new baby and myself should be right there with them.
This is a very family oriented dojo. I recommend it to anyone, from the professional athlete looking for the best training in town to the family looking for a sports activity that will instill discipline and the love for being active and staying healthy.
