The locker rooms are always dirty. The showers are gross and have hair balls and mold on the walls. The counters and floors appear to have not been cleaned in weeks. I’ve brought this to the attention of staff and management and nothing gets done about it.

I just want to let you guys know. And everyone who sees this comment that what you guys did O2 fitness was not only sleazy, but it should ruin your company's reputation. I will never give you guys or any of your location. My money and if anybody asks, I will let them know what a sleazy company this is. And the thing is, 02 fitness didn't even tell me about this or asked me to do any of this.I heard about it, and I had such a good experience with that company and their gym that I just wanted to do.What they're not willing to do, because, unlike you guys, they have standards. That being said the truth should be known. And that truth is that crunch fitness snuck in and took 02 fitness's contract for this location from under them. Thats messed up! And the community in this city should know about it

Cancelled my membership here, was told
by employees I would not be charged again. Proceeded to charge me the following months despite in writing having a statement with $0 due. Reached out and was told 2 times I would receive a refund and am still yet to get one three weeks later. Space is also small and consistently have classes in two/four main rooms.

The Staff at the front desk here is wonderful. Very helpful and caring. I had a bit more difficulty with management giving me clear, honest, answers to simple questions. I hope they’re able to improve in that regard. This Would be 5 stars and I might be back in the future depending on those factors. (I never get on google to review things.)

Pretty disappointed so far, definitely liked O2 better. The men’s locker room is gross. It’s a brand new gym and they didn’t do a deep clean in the showers or by the urinal areas. You can see all of the nasty grime left over from the old gym. The trash can is over flowing every time I’m in there. Also more than 50% of the lockers are broken and there’s really small benches that are a downgrade from what we had at O2 fitness. The sauna was renovated a bit, but the plastic fake wood material they used for the benches gets super hot and doesn’t seem like a material that should be used for a sauna. I do like the workout areas and think they did a good job there. My only complaint is the cup holders on the treadmill are super shallow so my metal water bottle went flying off onto the treadmill next to me when I started running. I’ll change this to a 5 star review as soon as that locker room gets the upgrade we deserve.

It’s so frustrating if you get suckered into these places because they’ve got some bags and sleds and you like to do those kinds of workouts but time for some reason if they can get five people together to take a class, they are gonna lock you out of every single one of them.
Why every crunch does this I have no idea.

I was a member when it was 02. It's nicer in my opinion. The equipment is brand new and separated for example machines in one section and free weights in another. The reason I gave it a 4 is during prime time is hard to find a parking space because it's not a very big lot and is shared with several other businesses, one being a restaurant so it can get crowded in the parking lot. Speaking of crowded, during peak times it also gets pretty crowded in the gym. So if you get frustrated easily you want to come doing off peak hours.

A $35 day pass fee is wild considering they were letting people come for free with a member every Monday for the month of October regardless of the member’s club level.

Guess I’ll need to find a different gym to use when I’m in town visiting 😒

The new location is everything I was hoping it would be. The facility is clean and the staff are amazing. V is the absolute best and she always remembers me and helps me with anything I have questions about. My kids love the new kids zone! Especially the gaming and theater part. Crunch checks all the boxes in my needs/wants for a gym. If you have been looking for a gym and don't know where to go, crunch is the answer.

10/21/2025 update: The new location is cool, but the new management is the difference maker here. They've got a mostly new crew lead by an amazing young manager who truly cares about our experience and it SHOWS. We have a much cleaner gym, and a staff that greets you when u enter as opposed to pretending to be busy. The culture is right and it makes a world of difference; in McKinley we trust!

12/26/2024 update: It would not have killed them to update holiday hours, PARTICULARLY the day after Christmas, here on Google, in the CRUNCH FITNESS APP, or to post them on social media, particularly when they're opening 4hrs later 🙄

A lot left to be desired here.... Always broken machines... Uneven cable hooks, when they're even enough hooks for the cables. Trip hazards EVERY WHERE. New flooring already coming up. Cable attachments don't have a rack so they're spread all over the floor. No paper towel holder in cardio machine areas, hell all the clocks haven't even been changes since the most recent time change.. Not enough trash cans, cleaning spray bottles often missing or empty. Paper towel dispenser in Men's locker room has been broken for years. New girl speaks more than anyone who's work there in my 4 years of being there but that's contingent upon her not having her face in her phone. Pretending to be to busy doing something to avoid greeting u is a standard practice. Stair climbers aren't balanced... It's just bad bad bad. So much potential, but it's being run with little attention to detail, lack of care for safety, members, and excellence. Just slack. Sooooo much potential. It's embarrassing.

Better then the old fitness center, has a variety of equipment that's good for all fitness levels. Ladies restroom could use a bit more stalls. This gym used to be solid. The machine selection is pretty good, and the layout is alright. That being said, neither of these things can excuse how they’ve let the place go in the last year or so. I could beat the dead horse and talk about the sanitation, deteriorating quality of the machines, and general upkeep of the place, but these have all been mentioned in various other reviews of the place. My primary complaint, and the breaking point for me is the music selection. It seems that on top of the upkeep of the gym itself, they have also cheaped out on their music selection. Instead of using some sort of streaming service to have seamless music playing at all time, they have resorted to what I assume is a free radio station. This in itself would not be an issue if not for one glaring flaw. After nearly every single song, this radio station feels the need to play “Take Me Out to The Ball Game” on maximum volume. Every single time a song ends they play an entire 30 second clip of this song loud enough to be heard through sound cancelling headphones with music playing. I’m sure you could imagine how incredibly annoying and disruptive this is when you are trying to concentrate on your set. In response to these negative reviews of the upkeep, the owner seems to consistently use the “transitioning period to another location” as an excuse for the upkeep, but I fail to see how moving to another location in a month has any effect on the soap dispensers in the bathrooms being empty for up to a week.

Been coming for a few weeks while in town for work, and I would cry if I had to make this my home gym. It’s terrible. The AC never works, equipment is old and falling apart, staff (is there staff?) is never there, which I guess is nice because you never have to worry about paying for drinks. Seriously though, if you’ve been to any other Crunch or any half-decent gym, this place will let you down. It works if you just need to get a quick workout in but overall horrible experience, I’d rather drive an extra 30 minutes to another one than come back here.

I’m not one to leave reviews unless absolutely warranted! My experience definitely deserves one today! Crunch Fitness West Ashley is in a season of transition, but thanks to the new Manager McKinley, the experience has remained nothing short of amazing.

McKinley is a true leader, professional, present, and passionate. She brings consistency, warmth, and structure to the space, making members feel supported even as changes unfold. Her energy sets the tone for the entire gym, and it shows in how clean, welcoming, and well-run everything is.

The gym itself has all the essentials: great equipment, plenty of space, and a positive, inclusive atmosphere. But it’s McKinley’s leadership that truly elevates the experience. She’s approachable, engaged, and clearly committed to making Crunch West Ashley a place where everyone can thrive.

If you’re looking for a gym with heart, community, and a manager who genuinely cares stop by today!!

The actual worst gym in Charleston. Premium gym prices without anything premium. Bathrooms/showers are disgusting , equipment is as old as the building. No sauna or any other benefits that other crunches have. And a natural phenomenon of not having enough plates for the machines/benches. Please go anywhere else for the same price as other high quality gyms in the area

Once upon a time I was a member of Crunch out of state. I loved it. I visited several in my area and enjoyed them all. Thanks to Crunch, I fell in love with working out.

Fast forward to this Crunch “opening” (in name only, barely) and I was stoked. I was so excited to be reunited with a gym I loved so much.

You can probably guess where this is going — this Crunch is dreadful. Here is a list of things that are/were wrong:

-No AC
-No music or static radio playing
-Broken water fountain
-Broken toilets
-Dirty bathrooms with trash and abandoned items
-Broken equipment
-Equipment in disrepair
-Bugs around the perimeter the yoga room
-Overflowing trash cans
-No paper towels

The worst part is that these issues exist for months. Nothing is addressed promptly and it really makes me wonder what the staff do and if any higher ups care about the business they’re running.

I gave 2 stars because things look tidy today (minus the bugs), which is likely because they put a sign up to leave them a review online.

UPDATE: I have updated my rating to one star. When I arrived at the gym last week, I was informed that my membership did not include childcare. I have been a member for nearly a year now I’m just learning this. I also learned that they’re moving the gym and changing the fee structure so all membership fees are going go up. I would have never known that my membership fee was about to double if I had not had this run in with the staff. I can’t believe the disregard of and lack of courtesy towards the members. I cancelled my membership. Avoid all costs.

There's a lady from cooperate who's giving mom's a bunch of grief about the kid watching area -- even though there weren't any problem for several months. She's created a set of arbitrary standards unique to this location (other Crunch gyms have lower age restrictions). And then she started taking photos of kids and asking for birth certificates (super creepy). We'll be going to a different gym. We know at least 8 memberships that are being canceled because of her. Way to go. If you're evaluating this gym, I've heard great things about O2 (+kids), MUSC Wellness (ranked #1 for years), HYLO, Orange Fitness, Zoo Health, Tres Gym, & KOR4.

I travel for work and use your crunch gyms across the state. It was disappointing to walk in and see old, tore benches/pads and unmaintained weight machines. The set up is wrong and does not allow for a good flow of your workout as lower body and upper body machines are not close to each other making you waste time looking for the one you need. Hope some newer equipment comes in soon.

Was great until Crunch took over. At any given time there are at least 8 weight machines down and several cardio machines. They don't have all the amenities that the top bracket pricing covers. I would suggest looking elsewhere but if you come here, don't pay more than the bottom price...you won't get anything more than a few machines and a LOT of high school kids hanging out and "bro'ing" on the machines taking up space.

A lot of the machines are broken. Today I worked out and told the front desk associate that none of the stations had papertowels to clean the equipment after use. Terrible business. The equipment is always broken and they refuse to fix it because "they will be doing renovations soon"...... which is a lie. Please save your money and go somewhere else. Planet fitness has better equipment now.

*The regional manager should be cognizant that a crunch fitness should have the same level of equipment (or better) as a planet fitness, but this location certainly does not. It's a shame because the staff is always running around trying to fix everything but they can't because it's so old and used.

Joined this gym as they told us they would be redoing the entire facility and I've had good experiences with Crunch in the past. Recently we were told they were no plans to redo the place, that they will just move locations eventually. Its super frustrating to pay for a membership with amenities when there are no amenities to use. No sauna, no tanning, no recovery equipment. The only amenity I use is going to other facilities because this one is substandard. As many other reviews state the equipment is frequently broken. Only good things about this facility is it is very large, a wide variety of equipment and the staff are extremely nice and helpful.

When I signed up, I was shown a video about how this gym was going to get this huge, magnificent overhaul. This was over 6 months ago. Not a single item has been upgraded, it’s the same gym under a different name with constantly broken equipment and DISGUSTING locker rooms/bathrooms. The staff seems friendly, but Crunch clearly has no problem selling you a gym that doesn’t exist. The fact that no upgrades have been completed, all of which were used to sell new clients, Crunch should be offering free cancellations or price reductions until the gym is upgraded with the amenities we are paying for. The gym is overcrowded and there is not enough operational equipment for the amount of memberships they sold. If they didn’t know when the gym was being upgraded, they shouldn’t have been advertising it to sell new clients. Save your money and find a different gym.

Update 2/13-

The overwhelming urine smell in the locker room for weeks now has led my decision to no longer use it. It’s disgusting. I’ve seen cats keep litter boxes cleaner then Crunch can keep this facility. Paper towel dispensers are still broken throughout the gym, and now the giant rolls are put on the sink countertop to get soaked and for customers to put their hands all over. FACT- when the rolls are soaking up all the standing water and filth while being stored on the countertop, they collect bacteria and germs, defeating the purpose of washing your hands! Just keep the dispenser filled it’s not that difficult. Check the locker rooms once every hour for cleanliness, even gas stations do that. Same on soap dispensers, just keep them functioning and full of soap……but instead just a giant jug of disinfectant to use while washing hands? Thats not how it works. Does DHEC need to visit this place to make a difference?
But hey, there’s 4 new benches in the free-weight room.

Constant rotation of broken equipment, dirty locker room, and lack of bathroom sanitation. They ran out of soap, spray bottles are empty, and garbage receptacles overflowing. Clean up your act. Cringe Fitness.

I work out here 6 days a week. Please read the entire review. 💛💪🏼

Pivotal fitness WAS the name of this gym when I would have rated it at 4 or maybe 5 stars. Since #crunch took over it has gone downhill rapidly. The staff doesn’t seem to think anything other than collecting up and socializing at the front desk during peak hours is important. I’ve seen more than 4-5 people sitting at the front desk while the locker room goes unkept for weeks on end. For well over a week the urinal stacked up with dip pouches and chewing gum and their apparent solution was to take the urinal cake and slap the trash onto the wall next to the urinal. If this was done by a customer, which I highly doubt, the staff members should have cleaned it up immediately. It has sat like this for at least 10 day. The locker room is cleaned less than twice a month. This chick fillet cup has been here for the better part of a week. Would seem the management needs to be educated on MANAGING.

Would recommend looking elsewhere if you’re looking to obtain a membership to a self respecting gym to work on your fitness goals. It’s a shame, I’ve been using this gym for 2 years and have watched its steady decline.

Update: this review was for Pivotal Fitness not crunch. Crunch is wonderful! So I have been going to this gym on and off since 2018. The first time going there, I did a seven day trial, when they were open in Mt P on Johnnie Dodds. When my friends and I first did the trial, we went to a class and then we had to leave right after for an event, so we weren’t able to sign up for a membership that day, and one of the staff replied to us “well I think you’re just trying to use the trial and leaving”. While I understand people probably take advantage of that a lot, we were genuinely wanting to get a membership and her saying that to us was very rude. But we got a family plan for a while and it was good. Eventually I stopped it, and then about two years later in Jan of 2021 I decided to join again with the deal they had, $30 a month for all the classes and the gym. It was great deal. However, the summer of 2021 comes and I want to pause my membership, because I wouldn’t be there for the month of May, they never inform me that pausing my membership would further push my year contract that I had signed up for. Maybe it said it in the contract, I’m not sure but I think the communication would have been nice. Then, I got charged the month that I paused it, and I tried to get in touch with them, one of the staff said I shouldn’t have gotten charged. Then he told me to get in contact with one of the guys that worked there when he was in, he told me to call back on a certain day. I called there multiple times for over two months to get ahold of him, and I left voicemails and spoke to other staff that said they would have the guy “call me back” and he never called me back. I finally got ahold of him and I came in to try and understand why I got charged. It didn’t make a lot of sense what he said about why I got charged and because he said that it was for “April”, when I got charged in May when it was supposed to be paused. However I didn’t want to argue, and so I just accepted it, because I was frustrated at his lack of communication. I never ever like to write reviews unless I genuinely don’t have a very good experience. And unfortunately, I didn’t have a good one with the staff at this gym. The instructors for the classes were wonderful though, and some of the personal trainers were awesome. However their management and staff are never on the same page and not very kind. It was not worth the year contact, which by the way it was supposed to be from Jan 2021-Jan 2022, but because I was uniformed about the pause membership pushing it, I was not able to end it until next month (May 2022). On top of that, two of the months that were “paused” I didn’t want them paused I only requested May, but they kept it paused while I was trying to get ahold of them. I don’t recommend, my roommate has a crunch membership and I’ve gone with her, and that have a lot more better classes, better staff, they have guest privileges, clean showers, sauna, massage, etc.

Pictures here are not true. Machines are old, some not working and some in dire need of maintenance. Dark and gloomy and dirty. Been to several crunch fitness, only the new are good but crowded. Actively looking for new gym.

Been with Pivotal for 3 years. This was a good gym prior to being acquired by Crunch. Now it's overcrowded and broken equipment galore. Really a shame because the staff are friendly and the equipment was good with plenty of variety. Clearly this gym is now being run in a way by Crunch to scrape every last dollar out of it.

i can’t lie, it’s a dingy gym. but good god is there a lot of equipment for you to use. yeah some of it is broken down and some of the free weight plates are chipping, but honestly the variety of machines and dumbbells they have more than make up for it. i’ve been to other crunch fitnesses that are more modern but have way less equipment, and i would so much rather this location. i practically never have to worry about whatever i want to workout that day, there’s always a machine open and ready. more than happy even with it being a bit more decrepit. would give 5 stars if it was a bit more kept up.

I’ve been a member at Crunch Fitness in West Ashley for two years, and I have to say the staff here is truly incredible. They’re always friendly, helpful, and on top of their game. Even after a major turnover, the new team is just as reliable and welcoming.

However, it’s clear that the corporate side doesn’t give this team the support they need to succeed. The staff works hard to keep things running smoothly, but they’re given bare-minimum resources to do their jobs. For example, half of the cable machines have been out of service for over a month, and the water fountain has been down for three weeks. These issues aren’t the staff’s responsibility to fix, but they still take the heat from frustrated members.

As someone who has been to many gyms, I truly believe that if corporate would let this staff take the reins, this gym would thrive. The team on-site has the potential to make Crunch West Ashley one of the best gyms around — they just need the tools and support to do it.

I use this gym because it’s close to my employer but it’s a 40 mins drive in. The amount of time that I’ve driven here early before work to lift and the gym is not open at the times posted blows my mind. 5am open but often times the morning staff does not show up. It’s 6:30 am as I write this and not holiday hours.

Update 12/28: Water Fountain has been down for 3 days now. They aren’t giving away free water and there is no water available for purchase. This place is an absolute joke of an operation.

I’ve been going to this gym for over a year now, and was previously an Eco Fitness and Pivotal Member. This gym has gone downhill fast since Crunch took over. It is absolutely filthy all the time, there is not enough equipment for the amount of members they somehow are able to retain and I don’t believe they even have a cleaning staff. Often times there are multiple employees at front desk, but nobody ever cleans a thing. It’s common to go to wash your hands and no soap will be available. Imagine 20 dudes urinating in a gym toilet and not being able to wash their hands and going and touching everything. Or after you wash your hands, no paper towels to dry them and you have to walk out to the gym to find a towel dispenser that is full. The floors and sinks are disgusting and I’ve seen cleaner rest area toilets. I’ve got pictures to back it all up. It sucks because the trainers all seem really nice and most of the staff is cool, I don’t believe the same GM that ran the place previously is still there. He was great. Crunch is a hard pass now.
If equipment breaks, it’s going to be a while before it gets repaired. I’m absolutely shocked they actually give tours of this place and people join after walking through it. How much would you pay to be a member of a gym where toilets look like this all the time?

I recently started going to Crunch fitness and I love it there! Lots of options, space, and amenities. But my only issue is the sanitation. The Men’s locker room is not well maintained and it appears no one cleans it at the end of the day. The locker appears past due for a detailed cleaning. That’s the only reason I give 3-stars.

Great staff. However, I noticed that even after renovations there hasn't been much of a change regarding machines being fixed. As a matter of fact, more machines have gone down, paper dispensers are empty or not working, and many free-weight machines have little to no plates to use. I was hoping this would be fixed when Crunch took over.

Not sure why there’s a man cleaning the woman’s locker room at 7am- peak hours with woman showering and getting ready for the day. I don’t care that a sign was put outside the door- the locker room still had multiple women getting ready. VERY UNCOMFORTABLE. Does the gym not have off hours to clean- or women to clean the women locker room?

Awesome gym and great location! Front desk staff was friendly and helpful. Huge space with every machine you could need. Plenty of squat racks and barbell benches. There is also a weights section, multiple group classes, and a kids zone space. Pre-workout and protein drinks are available for purchase in the fridge upon entry. Highly recommend if you’re looking for your new home gym in Charleston.

Bad Business Practices, Hidden Fees, and Deteriorating Gym

Before this gym was acquired by Crunch they would hide a $5/mo credit card fee that was not disclosed before you sign the contract that locks you in. This can only be resolved by providing your bank info (so you can't charge back when they gouge you again later). There is a hole in the roof causing a leak (which has been left unaddressed for months. There have been bug infestations that last an entire weekend. I am not sure where this money is going.

After being acquired by Crunch, they moved everyone up to the most expensive tier of membership without notice and then refuse to offer compensation when you dispute it (I had a base-level membership when it was still Pivotal and was moved to the highest-tier membership without my knowledge once Crunch took over).

The staff are less then helpful and try to deceive you by making it sound like the most expensive tier is the only tier. Only after the call and doing some research online did I see what was going on. I anticipate this will be a pain to cancel and they are going to try to milk every penny from me for as long as they can. This should have been apparent in the signup process where pressure-selling techniques are used to the extent where you're told that they have an exclusive offer, but if you ask to test out the gym and come back to the desk after then the offer will no longer be available (try to get you to sign up blindly).

This gym has run a masterclass in leaving a poor taste in peoples' mouths. I'm fortunate enough to have access to a different gym and so have ignored most of the annoyances.

I normally workout in my home city Charlotte, but when I travel for work I come here every day. It's close to where I stay and usually not crowded. The interior is spacious. On the downside, the AC and general air flow is pretty bad. The state of much of the equipment (both cardio and weights) is very poor. I'm constantly trying to find missing pieces and weights for both machine and free-weight exercises. Most Crunch locations have 4-6 standard rowers, this location has 2. A few of us had to share a single rope pull attachment for the pulley weights one day between machines.

With some equipment and facilities updates, this could be a really great location. I'm spoiled as my home Crunch is brand new (2023 build)

I go to crunch in Greenville so had to hit up this one in Charleston while on vacation! Crunch just took over this gym so I won't hold anything against them. The AC is broken which made working out a lot harder 😈 hehe. There was no staff on site when I entered, and some random guy was asking me where the staff was. I was like "idk dude this is my fist time here..."

Never did see a staff member 🤣

Jordan is an amazing trainer. I’ve been working with her for a year and a half now and have nothing but positive things to say about her. She is so great at making the small adjustments that make a huge difference. She is great at teaching form and technique especially on machines that would otherwise seem daunting. Jordan is punctual and dependable as well. I am so grateful to have her in my life!

Overall I would be giving four stars because Crunch is still very new to me BUT if I had to rate my trainer, Jordan, then she gets 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Jordan is so patient and so encouraging during our training sessions and never makes me feel bad for needing to slow down or take breaks. She helps me hone my form to make sure I’m safely doing each set and setting myself up for the best results. She’s been so kind and helpful that I really wouldn’t be interested in training with anyone else. Love Jordan!

I joined the gym during transmission to Crunch . I loved the trainers there and signed up for personal training sessions . I was told by the Director i could cancel at anytime with a 30 day notice . But when I needed to cancel because I had to be out for a couple months to send him an email and he would take care of it . Only to hear back that the policy states you can only cancel after a year !! Shame on me for being so trusting and signing that contract ! Pay attention to the fine print because they don’t honor their word !!
Buyer beware when joining Crunch
