This was by far one of the worst experiences my family has ever had. I came down to Lake Wylie to visit family and my children really wanted to swim so I brought them to the Y. We are not members, but we could still pay 30.00 for a nonmember fee to swim. When we arrived the gentleman at the counter was very pleasant, but when we got to the outside pool We got up to the window and the guy said we only had an hour to swim and I said that was ok, and he gave us wrist bands. My son who can't swim was given a red band and my daughter had to take a swim test. So we went to put our things up so we could hurry and spend our hour swimming. We'll 1st thing that happened was a lifeguard (old lady) came up to me and yelled that my son needed a life jacket ( that's fine and I was ok with that). 2nd she yelled at my daughter to get out of the 3ft area., then she said where are their wristbands? I said I was getting ready to put them on. She said where's hers pointing to my daughter. I said she wanted to take the swim test. She told her to follow her to take the test. 5 minutes later, my daughter came back crying and said the lifeguard had yelled at her and told her she couldn't swim!! My daughter can swim! She's passed so many swim tests, but that didn't matter to me. What mattered was how she treated my daughter!!! The lifeguard was extremely rude. So 10 minutes of being there, we ended up leaving and lost 30.00 which couldn't be refunded. We will never come back to this YMCA again.

I'm writing to share my family's recent experience at the YMCA, which unfortunately didn't meet our expectations. We encountered some issues with the swim test process that we found concerning.
During the retest, it seemed there was an unusual focus on my child, despite her having experience with open water swimming and cliff jumping. She was informed she couldn't swim, and then failed her retest for missing a stroke on the return lap. While I didn't film this particular swim test, I do plan to do so for any future retests to ensure complete clarity and a consistent evaluation process.
I'm confident my child will pass the test when it's filmed. My main concern is that the reasons for singling out our family during this process, citing unnamed lifeguards for safety concerns, felt unclear and inconsistent. It was disheartening to not receive clear information about who initiated these specific concerns.
Moving forward, I will ensure any retests are filmed to help prevent any further miscommunication or perceived inconsistencies. I hope the YMCA will look into these points to improve the experience for all members and ensure transparent testing procedures.

My husband and myself have been members of CSD YMCA for over a year,, needless to say is the best decision we've ever made.
From all the instructors, to all the staff that works at the front desk they go above and beyond when it comes to helping, greeting, answering questions, etc, all is done with a smile, a cheerful hello, have a nice day to all members at this facilDay.
Thank you for providing such great services not only to the community but to all your members.
May all of you have a Blessed day.

I really love to swim here but it is EXTREMELY annoying when I arrive at 5am and the pool is closed because no lifeguard showed up! Please get your act together and communicate! When you get up at 4 and get ready and drive to the Y and then find out you canβt swim because there is no lifeguard, it is not pleasant!

Bro literally they made us take a swim test and like, you have to
1. Jump in the pool
2. Tread water for 30 secs
3. Swim across the pool and you have to swim with ur head in the water!!!
And they do it if ur 16 or under itβs dumb
Honestly itβs a zero star.but I know itβs for safety but I hate the place and they do too much safety.

Not sure what's going on at this place, but maintenance and totally stopped. The bathrooms are gross, half the toilets are broken. The sinks have been broken for months. I split time between this y and the one in Gastonia. What a night and day difference in facility maintenance. Pretty disappointing.

Am hoping that the girl from the swim team is going to get justice from the moms that are bullying her she is receiving horrible treatment Iβm hoping something is done right away, and I hope that favoritism is not taking affect as this young lady is black, and the moms that are bullying her with her children are white!!!! So you guys now am sending this to the mayor that CSD is allowing this to happen shame on the swim team coach for allowing this to go this far if I was him, I would be kicking some people off the team starting with the ones who call that poor girl those names and disciplining her when it shouldβve been the moms and the kids who were kicked off the team and those moms should feel ashamed for allowing their kids to disrespect that poor girl what kind of people will allow that kind of stuff to happen and allowing that kind of racism to continue that girl needs justice, and I hope YMCA is going to take action against those moms for allowing The racism to continue!!!!!!

They do a terrible job of communicating pool closures and the locker rooms are always dirty. Thereβs no area for families to change and not even a changing station in the family locker rooms.
Update 2023: theyβve added baby changing tables which has greatly helped with taking little ones. A very welcome addition!

Iβm not so impressedwith the outside pool. Firstly, the evening supervisor yelled at some poor little 50lb kid for doing pull-ups on the pull up bar because itβs the β swim teams β equipment,,, we pay our taxes for the CSD and the teams equipment. So we pay for the YMCA facilities in a couple of ways. The kid could do a billion pull ups and still not damage the bar, so donβt get off on yelling at kids you bully. The week later some black female lifeguard totally lambasted another kid for the same thing which is totally ridiculous. Just let them use it and how dare they think itβs ok to scream at a kid.
2ndly, You pay your fees and you never know when or what they close. We called and someone said 5, so we checked the web site which said 8 so we called back and someone different said 8 ,,get it together. Last week they were supposed to close at 6 but closed at 5:30. You get there and the deep end is closed ,,,, again⦠what the heck?

I really like this YMCA, however my interest is in swimming. Their warm pool, (and I have to have the warm pool) is quite small and seems to always be busy with water aerobics. However at least they are open in the afternoons, which the Aquatics center closes at noon and reopens late. At CSD, the restrooms, dressing rooms and showers are sooo nice, always clean
Of course I realize that it is much newer than the Aquatic center. Both are about the same distance from my house. I prefer the Aquatic center because the pool is bigger, and I can go at 8 or 9 am. I can't do that at CSD

My biggest complaint it the menβs locker room. Itβs right next to the boys ( under 18) locker room. There is a group of older men in the morning hours that like to prop open the menβs locker room doors and hang out naked next to the open door that is again next to the boys locker room door. I personally do not allow my children to go past the front desk due to that group of men they are odd and they give me a bad feeling as if theyβre are child predators.

The YMCA is a fantastic organization that works hard to provide a variety of services to its members. The staff at the YMCA are dedicated and passionate about helping others, and they go above and beyond to make sure everyone feels welcome and supported. They are always friendly and helpful, and they are always willing to lend a hand whenever they can. The YMCA is a place where everyone can go to have fun, stay active, and build relationships. It is a place of community and support, and the staff make it even more special. So, hereβs to the YMCA and its wonderful staff!

Not sure if itβs racism or ageismβ¦I had a misunderstanding about a guest pass and was overcharged. Although not blatantly accused by the front desk attendant (Debbie) I could feel lots of micro aggressions being sent my way by her and her supervisor (Laura) as if I was orchestrating some scam to get a 7-day pass for the cost of a 1-day pass. I donβt think I need to ask for an empathetic response when I was the one that was overcharged, inconvenienced and didnβt want my receipt to be disposed of in the wrong hands.

I swim and have done the water aerobics, the facilities are pretty great. The outdoor pool is great in the summer. My son is enjoying swimming lessons and after school. Membership seems a little high but we use it a lot.
Stars are lost mostly due to the front desk staff. Either they just not trained or just are generally not helpful. You register for programs online, pay online, and when you ask them a question they typically don't know and have to refer you on. They can also be quite rude and I have had several issues them.

Facility is nice but for the size could expand since lake Wylie is bursting.
Also- front desk staff is sometimes very rude. Multiple occasions where certain people at the front desk answer questions with attitude and/or one word answers that do not help at all and then force you to ask a million other questions just to get to the bottom of something. Iβve work in customer service my whole life. I understand being busy. But there is no reason to be rude. Being helpful and nice from the beginning really helps every situation

Once again we are being turned away from using our local YMCA. As a resident of South Carolina (and live directly across the street from this facility) I was forced (threatened to have my YMCA membership revoked) if did not change my member to the Y in Ballantyne, which I used most often as it was across the street from my office. We paid for reciprocity membership, as my husband continued to use the CSD Y as his primary Y. Now, with me working from home, and the CSD Y continuing to the ONLY facility my husband uses, we are being told we cannot use the facility. During the closure of the YMCAs, we continued to pay full dues in order to support the YMCA and (other than this branch) its wonderful service to its communities. I would like to either a) get all of our donated dues refunded or b) be allowed to use the YMCA facility in our community, which we supported during the COVID crisis. I would think in return the YMCA would want to reciprocate that support by allowing us to try to stay as safe and healthy as we can at this time

Facilities are very clean and nice, no doubt about that. But they donβt have some of the basics that most YMCAs have. Weight room is small and missing basics like a squat rack. They have a whole water park but no sauna. If youβre older or looking to do anything other than lift, this may be your spot. But if you want to lift, donβt bother. Staff were nice but clueless to very basic questions.
