Course is pretty good. The problem here is the staff in the pro shop. More often than not, they’re as rude as can be for no reason. It’s a pretty well known thing for locals around here.

Fantastic place! Well worth the money! Well manicured, staff is off the charts! Pro shop was very friendly. Had a player leave a club behind and a marshal promptly caught up to us and returned it. We will be back!

Nice course. Greens and fairways were in good shape. Pace of play was atrocious. Waited on every tee box and took 5.5+ hours to finish 18.

I had an awesome time visiting Hilton Head and playing National. The course is beautiful and in wonderful condition. Despite being in flat swampy South Carolina it offers plenty of rolling hills, elevation changes, curves, and wonderfully kept parkland courses. Every hole felt fair but challenging. The driving range is grass and in excellent condition despite the horrible weather lately. The carts are very modern. And every staff member is extremely friendly and helpful. Since this was my first time here they offered lots of history and advice for the course. All of the prices were fair and the starter kept us spread out the waits were not bad.

I wish I lived here so this could be my home course, I loved it.

Very nice course. Ridiculous came off course to find a bar/restaurant and it was closed at 5;15 and 90% heat. This has occurred more than once. Do not know any other course than closes that early.

My brother and I played there yesterday and today. The greens are in great condition as are most fairways. We played the ball down and only had one suspect lie in the fairway. The course is very playable and we played today in just over 3 hours as a twosome behind a threesome. The value received at this course is better than most.

Golfed 8/11/2025 - The course was in great condition. I shot my PB there at 93 from 99. I’m usually a 100-105 golfer. My son and I had a wonderful time. The folks working there are very friendly. The course is not overly difficult. Since I drive it up to 200 yards, the course is pretty wide open at that range from the tee. We hit em from the blues. We are from out of town visiting (stayed on the island) and chose to play HHNGC for the price, the conditions, and course difficulty. Check this place out.

This was such an enjoyable golf course to play. The layout was fun, nothing overly challenging, with water on a few holes and some undulation here and there. The trees give you that Pinehurst feel. The distances were very similar on quite a few holes, but it was in great condition. It was a very compact course so you’re weaving in between all the holes often, luckily they have clear signage. There was a ranger out there managing pace of play which was awesome. Only negatives I noticed were no cart girl on a Sunday, the bugs were crazy, and the bathrooms were in a trailer at the clubhouse. None of those were a huge detriment to my husband and I, but could see how others wouldn’t like it.

Played today . Great layout . Everyone very nice and facilities first class . Loved the fact it is just the course and environment. The wind makes you think about club selection and adds to the challenge .
I was tried of paying expensive green fees on the island . Hilton head Courses crowded ! I would highly recommend this course to all vacationers. My rate was 78.00 for 18 holes after 2 pm.

Hilton Head National was a thoroughly enjoyable track. The greens had recently been aerated but were already rolling great just a few days after. My favorite part - no houses anywhere on the course! Definitely a great course to check off your list if you're traveling to or from Hilton Head.

Nice course. Very friendly staff. The practice area was ok (missing chipping area). Carts were in great condition. Fairways are nice and good size (no houses), tee boxes ok (little uneven), greens were true and nice. May want to carry some bug spray. Would definitely recommend it.

On five separate occasions during our round, the starter and course marshall incorrectly claimed that one member of our eight-person group had not paid for their tee time, which was later confirmed to be an error on the course’s part. This disruption significantly impacted our enjoyment of the front nine. Additionally, a course marshal urged us to speed up and RUN to our balls, alleging slow play, despite our group being directly behind the party ahead. These incidents created a rushed and unenjoyable experience throughout the round. Course was in good shape.

This track was excellent. The course layout was challenging, fun and in great shape. Played early spring so some rough was still yellow but the greens were absolutely gorgeous, rolled and not just painted. This was my favorite course to play on a 72 hole golf trip. Golf carts have GPS and maps.

You expect much more from a golf course that charges $350/2 people. Course conditions average. Layout average. Ranger Pete was the typical old grumpy Ranger. Showed up as a 2 some. No one in front of us for many holes. Was asked to be paired with another 2 some that just showed up. We say sure. Starting off the day with a 4 some and then a 3 some after, and a 2 some after is not the smartest move. We proceed to play in a 4 hr 10 minute pace, not fast, not slow. After the 6th hole we were told to pick up the pace. How about not sending off 3 somes & 2 somes after a 4 some. Do better Hilton head national. Glad to have played here to add it to the courses to tell people to avoid on the island. Well off the island, this isn’t worth the drive.

Played here yesterday. Course was in fair condition, fairways dormant. Required to ride in a cart unlike many courses on HHI, ( Sea Pines courses). As a low single digit handicap player, I play faster pushing my cart versus riding in a cart. Did not appreciate the interaction with staff so will not be playing at HHN in spite of being here for the next four weeks.

Nice public play course in hhn! the conditions were pretty good, the greens were in really great shape for a public course! A must play if you are coming to the Lowcountry. The only course in the area that has no houses or condos on the property. Played it on 12/19 and the course was in very good shape for late December. I’ve played it the Spring and Fall and the conditions then typically rival the more expensive resort courses at Palmetto Dunes and Sea Pines.

Wow. This place is a well oiled machine. You won’t find a better staff than this place. Greeted by cart staff at first with carts ready to roll. Pro shop that was fully stocked and very fair rates. Then a starter that gave you the exact information you needed to hear. Not to mention the course was nothing more than pure….. unbelievable.

But by far my favorite part was making the turn and our group decided to order the special for lunch, BBQ sandwich with chips. That chef in the back needs a raise because that man knows how to cook. By far the best bbq sandwiches with an exceptional side sauce that was very tasty. It’s hard to put into words but it was incredible.

We were there for a wedding and played on 12/7/24. Without a question would recommend this place and we will certainly be back next time.

I played May River while in the area and had a great experience, though it felt a bit formal and the staff was tense. Then, I discovered this hidden gem and loved it so much that I’m heading back for a second round in a row. As my son put it mid-round, the atmosphere here is simply 'joyous.' The course is in excellent condition, with the greens rolling true and the bunkers offering a realistic challenge. While the tee boxes could use a little attention, everything else was spot on. The pace of play is slow, but we used that as an opportunity to relax, take in the stunning views, and enjoy some quality father-son time. Highly recommend!

This place used to be my favorite public course in the area. Unfortunately now it is just a giant cash grab. They have an absurd 48hr rule for locals to make a tee time. Then when you call within that window they say they don’t have times available. Ironically those times show available online at the inflated prices. What a joke!

Course is a must play when visiting Hilton Head. Staff is very friendly and plenty of rangers to make sure pace of play is good. Conditions were excellent, you can tell the course is taken care of. My only complaint was the greens were really slow, but that could’ve been from the rain the night before. I will definitely return.

Always one of the best plays on the island (or technically off island). Greens had been aerated about 3 weeks prior and still healing but conditions were fine. Pace of play was 4hrs. Service was excellent. Marshalls were out. Big pet peeve. If you're going to charge $130 for greens fees give us a bag of range balls. I can't imagine the extra $10 for some balls are going to make or break your revenue number.

I’m very new to golf but David LaPour (instructor) has been incredibly kind. The course is beautiful & maintained very well. Dave in the shop was nice as well & gave some tips. The lady in the bar was nice too but it was unfortunately closed when I was done playing. It was quite hot (July) so I appreciated the water stations. The shop has a good selection of souvenirs but not much for lady’s clothing. Plenty for the guys. My only negative experience was the older gentleman at the bag drop was a bit of a grump both on arrival & departure. Even tried to crack a few jokes but he was not having it lol Oh well. I’ll definitely be back & hopefully my score will go down over time.

The course was beautiful, but the staff ruined it. We were playing as a foursome with no one behind us. When we got to the 4th hole, the ranger told us we needed to pick up our pace. (Still no one behind us) so we were rushing to speed up. He would stop at the green in front of us every hole and told us 3 more times on the front 9 that we are not playing fast enough. Finally when we were on the 8th hole, the ranger came up and got in our cart while we were teeing off and was checking our GPS. He said the pro shop’s GPS shows that we were on hole 5 and 30 minutes behind pace even though we were on hole 8 with still no one behind us. So basically we were harassed the whole front 9 because their equipment was faulty and it ruined our round because we were trying so hard to rush and there was never a group waiting behind us.

Checked out Hilton Head National Golf Course, and it was a blast. The layout is really cool, with a good mix of challenging holes. It’s a fun course that keeps you on your toes from start to finish.

The fairways were in great shape, and the greens were smooth and fast. You can tell they take good care of the place, which made the round even better.

The staff was super friendly and helpful, adding to the good vibes. The clubhouse is nice, with everything you need and some decent food and drinks to keep you going.

Heads up, it can get pretty busy, especially during peak times, so booking your tee time ahead of time is a good idea.

All in all, Hilton Head National Golf Course is a great spot for a round. Whether you're a golf pro or just out for some fun, it's worth checking out. Definitely planning to come back!

Brought 7 guests from out of state for a short golf trip. Hilton Head National always has been a favorite. With range balls the green fee was approximately &175. This did not include food or drink or shirts and hats which we may have bought if it weren't for our experience on the first tee. Guys were coming from cold weather states and a few hit horrible first shots. So they hit a breakfast ball. While leaving the tee the first group was headed off a ranger came over and literally yelled at my friends saying YOU NEED TO GET GOING I NEED YOU ON THE FAIRWAY NOW!! Horrible customer service. Nothing polite or respectful. And now the absolutely most crucial part. We waited on every single shot we hit all day. ABYSMAL pace of play. 4 hours and 45 minutes after being yelled at to hurry.
We did not see the ranger the rest of the day!!! Pace was grueling. We sat for as long as 5 minutes for a shot. So considering all the golf options in HH and Bluffton you would think customer service would be better. Much better. I complained in the pro shop to seemingly deaf ears. They did not ask for may name or phone number. Of course a group of old friends still had fun but importantly we left immediately after golf due to our dissatisfaction with the tone of the ranger. Obviously we will not be back. So while the course was nice the pace of play could have hardly been worse and being yelled at by the ranger and then scowled at later by the same guy left a bad taste in the mouths of those of us that live nearby and our guests from out of state.

Beautiful and well kept golf course. I played a round of golf Saturday 26 of November 2023. My biggest disappointment was when we finished our round of golf was to find the bar closed at 4pm in the afternoon. We tried to get the staff to serve us but to no success. Overall, good course but definitely could be better. Tee boxes, fairways and greens were in good condition. Bunkers were like cement. And golf carts shut down "close" to tree line...ugh. Unfortunately, way too many cart path only holes, no beverage cart and the bar closed at 4pm.

Before playing today, I read a few negative reviews and was curious as to what my experience would be. After playing the course, I can honestly say that the negative reviews are likely more about the individual who wrote them then the course itself. I interacted with 7 or 8 staff members before, during and after my round. All were extremely polite, courteous, friendly and helpful. The range (all grass/no mats) was in great condition and the range balls were new or nearly new. Carts have GPS displays and are in great condition. Of the courses I've played while on vacation, this course was in great condition, including the greens. Great atmosphere and pace of place was fine. I'd highly recommend playing here. The rate was comparable to other courses in the area and worth it.

First time in 13 years that I haven’t played HH National, and here’s why.
They think they’re something they’re not. They think they can charge the same rates (or more) as on-island courses, and the just don’t measure up to that price point. With the addition of the nearby trailer park (on their property), it’s just cheapened the place.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a nice course. But for $128 you can get just as nice, even nicer, on island within minutes. Two examples would be Shipyard and Golden Bear, both cheaper (at morning rates), equally as good, and central the the island players.

We phoned National first thing in the morning seeing their tee times were wide open, and asked what a last minute rate would be. No discount. So we took our money elsewhere. I guess the new management / ownership feels they have enough business?

Another course worth visiting is right next door to National, and just as nice … Old South. Highly recommended.

Goodbye HH National, it’s not me, it’s you.

This is in regards to the service. The person at the bag drop + the two people inside the pro shop were so rude. Nobody was kind, they were not accommodating & did not treat us with respect.

Amazing Golf course, great condition. The greens rolled true with very little hop to them. Fairways were cut well with no bad lie in the short grass. Bunkers were great with a good amount of sand. The gentleman at the clubhouse was very helpful with the questions we had about the course conditions upon arrival. I will most definitely be coming back to play another round.

The course was nice and challenging. The 1-start review is because I could never recommend this course due to questionable business practices / ethics.

On the 18th hole of my groups second play-through, I was driving up the cart path by the fairway and veered off towards my ball and accidentally went over a tree root that I didn't see. I wasn't going full speed and there wasn't too substantial of a bump, but something in the front tire area broke and the cart sagged a bit. The cart was still drivable so I brought it back to the club house.

Once there, I told Thomas, the guy taking the carts back, what had happened. I explained the situation and apologized for the inconvenience. He then said we could make this "go away" if I gave him $200...

I've had numerous friends have accidents in golf carts, some much worse than what happened to me, and they've never been asked for payment. Golf carts are constantly being used and driven over uneven terrain and wear and tear is something golf courses anticipate and have insurance for. But Thomas said I needed to give him $200.

I thought that was unfair given there very well may have been prior wear on the cart and any minor bump could have caused the tire issue, but I felt bad about the situation so I tried to offer $100, then $150, and he said no, he needed $200 to make it go away. I said I wasn't comfortable paying that as I didn't know the maintenance history of the cart and there was no way to say I was even liable for this. Thomas then wanted to take a picture of my driver's license and my credit card, even though I said I couldn't accept liability for the cart and wasn't comfortable paying him.

I allowed him to take a photo of my license, but not my credit card, and gave him my phone number because I did want to be helpful and not abandon the situation. He then said because I wouldn't pay him, I could expect to hear from their legal team.

What??? A minor accident and ~$350 in damage, including labor, (he later texted me the invoice, not sure if they may have done additional work than what was required for the issue I experienced) and you try to intimidate a customer with the threat of legal action. I went to the course with a group of 9 and we all golfed 36 holes, spending around $2,000 at the course that day, but minor damage to a golf cart was still unforgivable to him.

He made me feel harassed and intimidated. My only goal here is to shine a light on this and hopefully convince others to take their business elsewhere to a course that values their customers who are spending large sums of money and that doesn't use intimidation tactics when they don't get what they want.

I'm sorry for this review if maybe this is not the practice of the course and instead the practice of one employee wanting to make an under-the-table bonus off an intimidated out-of-towner, but I have no evidence that is the case.

Excellent conditions tees through greens, especially the smooth true fairly fast greens. The course is quite wide open and forgiving, in part because the areas under the trees are very well blown clear of leaves. This was helpful to those of us who pulled or sliced tee balls a little more often than we would have hoped to. Lastly, they are very friendly, helpful, and professional. I was absent-minded enough to leave my lob wedge on # 14, but couldn't recall when I had last played it (rarely used), so one of the staff drove the last several holes until he found it on # 14. What a great guy, and staff!

Wife and I were on the island for 2 weeks and we played "The National" twice. The course was in super shape and the speed of play was perfect. The course is challenging but yet forgiving. I love it. And the Yingling taps and pocket sandwiches are the best. We picked them up on the turn. We both shot well and will come back again and again. This course is always one of my " must play" when we make it to the island. Minnesota Golfers.

Was only able to play one course on this trip, and I researched for a few hours and I believe I found the right one. Course was pristine, tee boxes, fairways, and greens were in great shape, greens running about a 9 or 10 and true. Was worries about mosquitos and water based on the other recent reviews, but had no issues whatsoever. Not really a terribly challenging course, lots of privacy, good pace, and plenty of fairways to let rip. Can’t wait to come back.

Had a great time the course was superb, fast greens, but the price was way too high usually when u buy your greens fee u get range balls free not here beer is high 6 beers are 20 bucks it cost me 100 bucks to play and we were managed the whole time we were there guy kept moving our holes around saying we were behind pace when there were not anyone waiting. Like I said great course just not worth the money and bs bieng managed.

This is a really nice course and it was in great shape (especially for this time of year) when I played yesterday. I got a great deal on the round and I will for sure be back. Once I was on the course it was a really great experience. Fun layout that has a decent amount of challenges but is also fair. My only complaint was my experience with the starter. He was a nice man but he was horrible at accessing the situation that was going on when I was starting. My tee time was at 2 and I got there in plenty of time to check in. I was a single and was supposed to be playing with another 3 people which I am perfectly fine with. The issue was that those other 3 people had gone ahead and teed off without me (They must have teed off around 1:45). This confused the starter greatly and somehow it resulted in him having me wait until around 2:15 to start with another twosome. I was just sitting in my cart at the clubhouse waiting for him to let me go when there was nobody on the 1st hole. He then proceeded to talk about the golf carts for way too long. The golf carts are nice with GPS and a touchscreen but for someone has been to many course with carts like these I did not to hear him ramble about them for 5-10 minutes. The rest of the staff that I encountered was great but I just think the starter needs to work on his situational awareness.

- changing review from 4/5 to 5/5. I’ve played here a few times now and it’s turning into one of my favorite courses.

Hilton Head National Golf Club, rated 4-1/2 stars or 4 Gold: 27 excellent holes of golf are on offer at this Gary Player designed course, set in quiet woodland, and without the usual array of real estate lining the fairways. In this natural setting of big pine trees and quiet lagoons.
The closing holes on the Player and National nines share a wonderful double-green, although the National and Weed seemed to us the best fit (and the closing hole on the Weed is a belter).

This course was amazing. Played last week of June, 2018. 1st time at course, on vacation. Greens are perfect, rolling at 12 or better and SO TRUE! Fairways were like plush carpet with no bad spots that i remember at all. Fairways are generous and even if u hit wide, u can find your ball most of the time. I played wide left most of the day, played from trouble, but only lost 1 ball. I paid $60, and would pay that all day long for this course. Facilities were great, well managed, very nice, friendly staff, and easily accessible. Carts have GPS that were quick and accurate! A 10 in my book!

The course was very pretty, but there were not many ball washers. There were no coolers on the carts, so your bottle of water for the back nine was warm when you drank it. There was no water for drinking on the course either. There was stupid pressure to keep up with group ahead even thought we played the course in under four hours. They lost a point for that downer. I mean, I understand to keep up, but when we can't and the group behind is out of touch, and we finish under four hours, what is the point?

Google map course if you are visiting and booking online. It's called Hilton Head National Golf Club but is actually not on the island of Hilton Head. It's about 30+ minutes with traffic to the actual heart of the island. Carts have GPS, that was a nice feature of the course. Course was in pretty good condition based on price tag of the round. If the course was called Bluffton National Golf Club I would give it more stars.

A truly fantastic course! I absolutely loved the views. I wish I would have played before they punched the greens but oh well. The course was well maintained and offered beautiful views. I really loved the GPS system built into the golf carts. This is how all golf courses should be! The only thing that I was upset about is that from the tips it plays 6700 and the next step down is 6100. I feel there should be something in-between the two. Overall, I recommend playing this course 110%! Thank you for a great golfing experience.
