The warm up area and starter were great at RTJ course. Course play was slow; there were 3 carts and 5 people in front of us. We encountered workers on almost every hole which was distracting. From rangers on greens, to greenskeepers in fairways, to charity sellers on par 3s- amazed at the cost vs distractions. Course in good shape though- just not worth the money

I have been playing The Jones Course for 10 years. The course is in the best shape since I have been a member. The same goes for the Hills and Fazio course. The Superintendent Mr. Hightower and his staff are doing a great job!

My wife and I signed up for the Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy with golf pro Doug Weaver. We were uncertain about how the instruction would go because Doug was teaching the both of us at the same time. We need not have worried because Doug was able to determine what we needed and how to approach our needs. Doug stressed, not only the physical aspect of the game, but also the mental approach. Certainly, there were ups and downs for us during the learning cycle but we left knowing that if we practiced what Doug taught us, we would likely improve. Doug was very pleasant and we did learn a ton. I’m writing this review after my first round of golf, with my senior men’s league, 2 days after completing Doug’s academy. I’m happy to say that I haven’t scored that well in more than 40 years! Thank you Doug and Palmetto Dunes!!

Had a fantastic round of golf at this course! The grounds were well maintained and so pretty. It far exceeded our expectations. At the end, Neuman was the cherry on top when we stopped to chat with him for a minute as he started to clear our trash and clean our clubs. Such a great guy! Would definitely play this course again, and hope to run into Neuman when we do!

Course was in great shape. Fairways and rough were fairly manicured. Greens were pure and rolling true, maybe 9-10 on stimp. Grain is definitely present.

Holes were mostly straight, however there are some strategically placed trees that make you think about shot selection. Front 9 is all into the win and last 9 down (and prettier). Last hole was a fun one. Short. You can hit it over the corner and get it close to the green from about 350 (from gold tees). The 10th hole to the beach was nice. You have to walk up the sand path to see it but it is nice.

Worth the 280 bucks to play it a few times. Not worth it if that goes up.

The supply of practice balls was kind of chintzy for a $225 course. A bigger deal was pace of play. We blew past 4.5 hours on 17. The 4 in front of us was easily 2 holes behind and although there were numerous marshals, nothing appears to have been said to them. The hot dog at the turn was very good.😂

Amazing experience from start to finish. Rick in the shop couldn’t have been nicer—super helpful and just an all-around pro. Then Bobby, the starter, set the tone with how welcoming and awesome he was. Great round that almost wasn't! We showed up for our round early morning for our round scheduled thru a third party only to discover that our tee time on their sheet for later in the morning. As we had other plans for afternoon we were looking at not playing. Thankfully the staff went above and beyond expectations and got our group of 8 out before the first scheduled tee time. Extremely grateful for their flexible attitude and we were able to move along, conscientious of not holding up the groups behind us. Big shout out to Ron our starter for the day. The whole family did 3 days of golf academy instruction with Doug Weaver. Doug did an outstanding job and improved all our understanding and skill of the game. I highly recommend taking a class with Doug. My husband and I had two fantastic days at Arthur Mills - I called for private golf lesson and was recommended Doug Weaver since I am a first timer. He was hilarious, gave specific instruction, and genuinely cared about us and our golf game. We extended our time with him by an hour, and Doug ended up helping us switch our schedule for the next day so that we could have another private lesson. The next day we did a playing lesson with Ed Brill which was also amazing - Doug and Ed are super different and I’m so grateful I got to learn from both. Would absolutely go back and would absolutely book more lessons with Doug and Ed.

Posting on my sister in laws phone.
I attende Doug’s clinic on a Monday. His swing is graceful and powerful. He looked at my swing and gave me such good advice, I signed up for a lesson the next day.
Took about a minute for him to diagnose my flaw, and he showed me a picture showing y incorrect position. We took about 10 minutes for fixing it. Results were dramatic.
Then, we worked on chipping, putting and sand shots for the remainder of the lesson. Again, dramatic improvement.
Doug is very easy to understand, good communicator.
I played pretty well the next three days. All my rounds were below 80, with 76 and 77 two of the days. Priori was in the low 80’s.
It was great and once I dial in my distance control in chipping and putting, I think I have a shot at shooting my age.
So helpful to have another set of eyes with great knowledge. I never would have figured this out on my own. Just very grateful. Thank you Doug.

The Robert Trent Jones course was at the top of our list for my bachelor party. Unfortunately, due to heavy rain and poor conditions the week before, the course wasn’t in the best shape, which we had seen reflected online. That said, Alex, the General Manager, was extremely accommodating and understanding of my concerns. I truly respect him and his staff for going above and beyond to make things right. The layout of the course was excellent, and I’d love to come back and experience it again when it’s in peak condition.

The course overall is decent, but not for $200. Greens were average at best. Very slow and patchy. The fairways on the front 9 were very bare in a lot of areas. Most of the bunkers were washed out and not manicured. Would not be eager to come back and play here. Course should not be over 100 bucks. Not to mention there at tee times for $250+

We played the RTJ track in late August. I can understand the island has been hit by unseasonably high rainfall and heat, but to say the conditions rivaled an untouched muni would be an understatement.

For $200+ it’s not unfair to ask for a sub 6 hour round (don’t worry; rangers are effectively useless here) but the real kicker was the legitimate weeds growing in every green.

Fairways were a joke. If you’re actually paying your greenskeeper money you should do a favor and stop.

Played shipyard and a number of sea pines courses which were substantially cheaper and in far better shape.

No excuse. Get it together.

Played the Robert Trent Jones course on Tuesday, Aug. 26. The course was beautiful. The staff was great. Kevin and Mike at the bag drop and Don the starter were amazing. Loved the RTJ course. The layout mixes woodland holes with seaside views. All of them were beautiful. I played the morning following several inches of rain and the course was in great shape. This course was fun to play. It was a very hot day so there were not a ton of people on the course. I found getting out was a little confusing, and a lot of talk between the staff, that I do not need to hear. The course is on the oceanfront, but that is a little misleading. The only hole where you can see the ocean is 10 and 11. The title makes it sound like it's Pebble Beach and that is not the case. All that said, I would venture a guess more people like the back 9 over the front. The turn is interesting with a cool little rest stop to get a few beers and a hot dog. The par 3s on the back 9 are fun and the greens across the entire course are huge! The range is a sneaky little nice spot to hit balls, grab some food or drinks and work on your irons. If you were on the fence about this course, I would say go for it. You will enjoy your time at Robert Trent Jones Oceanfront Course!!

My wife and I spent the last week of May 2025 on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. We found information online about Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort and its outstanding reputation for golf instruction. We started emailing with Doug Weaver, their Director of Instruction, about their lessons and, in particular, about their three-day golf school. We were interested in a modified schedule, as we are in our mid-60s and did not think we could do the three-day school in its standard form. Doug graciously accommodated our requests for a modified schedule. More details are below, but we ended up taking three-hour lessons for four days (we probably would have done even more as we were enjoying them so much and learning so much, but wanted to see more of Hilton Head Island since it was our first trip there). We also played nine holes on a few days. Doug told us in advance that we would leave at the end of the four days as “better golfers with smiles on our faces.” He could not have been more right! As we told Doug, he made our vacation.

Doug Weaver is the heart of the Palmetto Dunes golf academy. We were surprised and thrilled that Doug himself taught us. He has been teaching for years and has the credentials to teach and play. I won’t give away any of his sayings or detailed methods, as you really need to experience them yourself. But he personalized our instruction and was always cheerful and patient. He pushed us to improve while also knowing how to keep us from getting frustrated. Lessons were enjoyable and rewarding, whether on the practice range or playing holes on the course. Doug emphasized the fundamentals—grip, stance, posture, alignment, etc. —while also addressing the mental aspects of the game. Doug used our cell phones to video record and show, not just tell, us things about our swings.

We also want to give a shout out to all the people at the golf courses who made our visit even more rewarding. We would name names, but everyone who was part of our experience at all three golf courses, including the front desk folks, the cart guys, the café folks (where we also had wonderful food and service beyond what some would expect), the young lady at the range, and everyone else we encountered were uniformly friendly, helpful, and accommodating. Everyone clearly loved being part of the Palmetto Dunes golf experience. And all three courses were wonderful and well kept, so the groundskeepers in the background also deserve kudos.

A visit to Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort is more than just a golfing getaway—it’s an immersive experience in Southern hospitality, natural beauty, and personal improvement. Our lessons with Doug Weaver were a rare combination of technical expertise and genuine enthusiasm for teaching, providing tremendous value to us as new golfers. We would definitely love to return in the future. And we still have the smiles on our faces.

Mike White from RI was so helpful when we got to course! Mandy on the cart was amazing! She was tentative to us making sure we had everything we needed. Our experience at Robert Trent jones was not up to standard as advertised. We played at the end of July and the weather couldn’t have been nicer. The course however wasn’t up to par. The tee boxes were thick as if they weren’t cut to proper length, the greens were covered in sand to where you couldn’t putt without going through a line or fairly large pile as if it wasn’t dragged enough or blown off. The famous ocean front hole number 10, we didn’t even notice because all you can see is the natural sand sea wall. The green and 11th tee is lower than the wall so you don’t even see the ocean. This course is not worth the money.
We played George Fazio 2 days later and have 10 times better experience with the greens and overall course

My son and I played first thing in the morning last week and our experience exceeded already high expectations. Ron the starter gave us excellent prep on the course prior to teeing off and he proved to be spot on with all his advice. The course was in great shape including the greens. I golfed at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course in Palmetto Dunes Hilton Head on Tuesday 7/15/2025. I was greeted very friendly by Joe who helped get me some rented club. Ron greeted me with a nice smile, offered me some range balls, and briefed me on a few details about the course. The course was in excellent shape. Perfect day to golf! Gabe helped me with my clubs after I finished. He was friendly as well. This was my first time playing this course and the staff made me feel extremely comfortable. My husband and I took our vacation to Hilton Head for our first trip in 33 years. We couldn’t wait to play on the Robert Trent Course. It turned out to be very disappointing. The course is pretty but way over priced with the cost of over 500.00 for two golfers with a cart and club rentals. The clubs were said to be new, which was true but very cheap! The 2 holes that are supposed to be an ocean view really aren’t for the fescue are tall and block the view! This was supposed to be one of the highlights of our trip, so disappointed! We have courses in the Buffalo area that are prettier and cost around $50.00 for 18 holes with cart! I guess you would say they are way over priced!

One of the best golf experiences I’ve had—start to finish!

Huge thanks to Jim Morrison for the invite to play the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course at Palmetto Dunes. From the moment we arrived, the service and atmosphere were top-notch. Kevin at the bag drop was quick to help and incredibly welcoming. Bob the Starter gave us great tips and had the kind of energy that puts you in the right mindset for a great round.

The course? Absolutely pristine. Fairways were perfectly manicured, the greens rolled true, and the scenic beauty of each hole made it a round to remember.

Liz the cart girl was an absolute highlight—she rolled up with a smile and began to dance when she caught part of my playlist while Elvis was playing. A fun moment that added to the charm of the day. And over at the snack shack, Katie kept the good vibes going with her friendly attitude, fast service and always smiling.

Every single staff member we interacted with made me feel like VIPs. If you're in Hilton Head, make sure RTJ at Palmetto Dunes is on your list. Can't wait to tee it up again!

Most of the front 9 is fairly pedestrian…nothing special. Holes 8 on are super cool layouts and picturesque. Really enjoyed their designs. However, very disappointed in the greens and tee-boxes…municipal course level. Greens still had remnants of aeration (never mentioned), very sandy, bumpy, and oddly chewed up in some spots. Tee boxes very patchy and weedy. Hopefully they are addressing but not worth anywhere near what they charge. AVOID in my opinion.

Beautiful course with very nice amenities. Driving range was top tier. Unfortunately we had a late tee time (5:25pm) so by the time we got to the back 9, there were people on multiple of the greens putting/goofing off, multiple people fishing that were rude, and bikers everywhere on the cart path. Absolutely killed the exclusivity and for the price, completely unacceptable. We ended up not finishing the round and I brought it to the clubhouse’s attention with no other response besides “we don’t have security driving around this late.” Very disappointed and will not be returning, it’s a yearly tradition to golf at a nice course in HHI.

I played the Robert Trent jones course today. The driving range was nice with the top tracer at each bay. The staff were excellent. The course, did not meet expectations. For $175 my putt should not be bouncing all over the place. Also, there were a lot of dry spots with dead grass. For the money, this course should be in better shape.

During August 2024, my friends and I spent 3-days using the Palmetto Dunes Resort golf package. It was by far the best deal, most practical, and memorable golfing experience we've had. We are diehard golfer, but we are not the type of group that needs to be pampered—just show us to the tee box and let us have ourselves a time! We spent the first day playing 36-holes at the Robert Trent Jones Oceanfront Golf Course, and it was in phenomenal shape! I need to mention there was one hole with a huge mosquito outbreak, that got us all bit up. The staff was very clear to inform us that it was a fluke, and it's not normally a problem. We loved the cut of every hole at the RTJ course. It was mixture of tree-lined fairways, to open-breeze coastal. We hope to see it again.

For the price of a round I expected better carts, a couple waters in the cooler, no young families constantly riding bikes throughout the course, towels that don’t smell like a teenage boys feet and functioning water stations in 100 degrees. Golf course was mediocre for a $139 course. I do understand it is about location. Some tee boxes were very thin with dirt and goose grass on them. A couple of greens and the putting green were showing too much sand for me. I am the type of golfer that does not mind spending money on a nice course. Too much dirt on this one.
