I like the amenities this location has to offer, but not a fan of the full nudity thatβs allowed to take place in the hot tub/steam room/sauna. The locker room is shared with children and I donβt think they need to be exposed to full nudity of random adults, and I myself find it hard to enjoy a steam or hot tub when there are people fully naked exposing themselves right next to or across from me. It just feels unsanitary and is uncomfortable to be around. Changing/showering is one thing, but I feel intentionally entering common areas sitting with other people should have a rule against full nudity, and I do know that the majority of members would agree.

Paid for a punch card when it was just Avera McKennan Fitness so I could use it when I came to Sioux Falls. Turns out, new ownership wonβt honor the remaining visits that Iβve already paid for. Bad business.

Need more room in the weight space. I love that thereβs a sauna, but itβs not as hot as the other locations saunas about 15-20 degrees colder which makes me want to drive further to get a different sauna. Thereβs also a woman that goes in there and will go in and out ten times in ten minutes which affects the temperature, she gets completely naked no towel nothing , and hangs her wet clothes over the sauna machine to βdryβ I guess and itβs pretty gross and uncomfortable. Iβm a very open person but I feel more comfortable going in a coed sauna at this point than going to this location. People act like itβs there personal sauna at home without thinking of others.

Great Life, can you please fix the air conditioning? Itβs been weeks! The temperature in the facility makes me not want to work out here. And the lack of attention to detail is making me want to go elsewhere besides the Great Life ecosystem.

This place was really nice when it was Avera fitness. Great life ruined the experience. Desperately needs maintenance and cleaning. Neither sauna works. Towels are hilariously small. It could use some renovations or at least a good cleaning.
The classes are really good and people are friendly and encouraging.

Went down since great life, still good but the new crowd has no idea of decorum or knowing of unwritten rules. Great life can you put a sign on the steam room to be quiet as in not full length conversation that ruin everyone else time in there, or not wear outside shoes in steam room. Or don't spit on the floor. Or blow your noise on the floor. Maybe shower before your in there. Just some basics. These newer guests need some education in what's appropriate in a public space, especially the steam room. Thanks will do 5 stars if you can just make the steam room good again.

i was a member before greatlife took over. even now, this gym has great facilities, staff, and equipment. but it is not what it was and many of my worries before the handover proved true. its much busier. before it did not matter what time you went now it best to avoid peak hours. groups of teenagers are more common and dont have the gym etiquette the older crowd does. maintenance on facilities is more common and takes longer to complete. i hope these are growing pains and things will work out in the long run. but then comes the cost.
the lower price didnt mean much to me. i was fine paying more for the quality of life benefits from avera. a couple months in, greatlife has already increased their membership prices. should they increase anymore, i will look for another gym.

I loved when this was just the Avera fitness center. It was amazing. Now that GreatLIFE manages it, I fully 110% regret signing up for a membership. The instructors donβt give instructions, or offer modified options. If you do a class her you better be ready to run a marathon already and be a Zumba expert. Also bring your own towel. Avera used to have great towels. Now I get to choose if I want people to see my front half or back half naked. There are kids everywhere. You canβt even run one lap on the track without stopping suddenly due to kids not carrying that they are blocking it. Also people are now happy to do personal calls in the locker room. I pray they arenβt taking pictures. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY HERE.

2024 post GreatLife acquisition edit:
This went from a 5-star adult only facility, to a 2-star teen ridden one virtually overnight. High quality 100% cotton towels replaced with thin tiny towels, gym is flooded with people, kids in the workout area taking up all the machines, running on the track, no adult supervision, no one cleaning anything.
A massive downgrade for anyone who was a member prior to this acquisition.

Edit post GreatLife acquisition:
Big bummer. Obnoxious amount of kids/teens. I chose to pay more to leave GreatLife initially and go to Avera, and now forced back to GreatLife... Avera had a sense of exclusivity, amazing amazing staff and always clean. In the matter of two-three days, that's all gone.
Nice facility, very clean, friendly staff, locker rooms, shower, sauna etc are great.
Membership cost is pretty absurd - they mentioned the increase was due to pickleball? I suggest those who actually participate in that pay extra, not every single member. Members should be able to opt in. Just seems unfair. Also, the hours should be extended, especially for roughly $65+ a person (with a discount).

This is mainly an old person gym. Hard to get an appointment with the pool. When you do and it's your appointment time, the older women that are in your Lane get very very upset when you show up for your appointment and ask them to move from your Lane

I personally enjoy coming to this facility. The front door staff have always been pleasant. They greet every time I walk in. The equipment has a wide variety to choose from. Itβs easy to move between free weights and machines without any hassle. My only issue with this place is a particular trainer. Heβs not very polite. He likes to speak poorly about other clients regarding their personal fitness goals. I just never made eye to eye with him. Iβve never had a conversation with him (donβt plan on it either). Itβd be nice if all the staff strived to empower others through fitness, and ultimately supported others to reach their goals. Coughβ¦ Chad Gomarko.

Karenβs at the front desk. Came as guest with the kid, bought a punch card, guy at front desk had no issues and let us in. Today these two Karenβs said 14 year olds not allowed even with adults due to liability needs to be 15 for their insurance reasons. Guess 15 increases their liability factors? Could have given decent review but didnβt work out. I did notice equipment pretty decent and updated, but man lockers and general swimming pool looks rundown, ceilings had some dirt buildup.

The facility was clean and the staff was very friendly and helpful. I needed to work out some soar muscles so I did some exercises and stretching in the therapy pool. Water was nice and warm. Hot tub was clean although notbto hot but the people were really nice and struck up cordial conversation. They also have a dry sauna and steam room. I now it's a small thing but this gym actually has decent size towels that are soft instead of the small scratchy ones most places have.

Changing my rating from 5 stars to 3. Not sure what has happened, but that staff are genuinely unhappy. The front desk folks don't seem to care if you are there or not, the floor staff are grumpy, and the management is happy to sit in their offices, or grump the few times they come out. The facilities are fantastic...so 3 stars. But the staff...not so much.

I'd give this gym no stars if I could. You can tell it's owned by a hospital by all their ridiculous and archaic "rules" that they are implementing. You now have to make an actual "reservation" if you simply want to use the pool, hot tub, sauna or steam room. This generated some good laughs by myself and other members today. Good luck enforcing that. On top of that, I was humiliated by some old crow taking temperature scans that my mask wasn't over my nose enough for her liking. Screw you lady! I quit this evening and they should just close their doors as their equipment is about 50 years old and sucks. Go to Great Life as it's 1000% better and about half the price. Good riddance!

My husband and I are new to Sioux Falls and wanted to check out this facility. Jason, Manager, gave us a tour and a three day pass. I cannot say enough good things about our entire experience!
He was friendly and professional, taking pride in his business and community. The facilities were gorgeous, clean and well laid out. I have been in many gyms over the course of my 20+ year bodybuilding pursuit. This one was tops. They have a spa setup with hot tub, sauna (wet and dry) as well as a pool (by appt only for COVID). The locker rooms were spa quality with all toiletries provided-even shaving cream and hair gel!

A really fancy health club. The supply toiletries, towels and lockers where you make up your own combination. They've got lots of classes starting early in the morning; a salt water lap pool for swimming. They've got a steam room, sauna and hot tub in both the women's and men's locker rooms. The hot tub I'm the women's locker room has the most powerful jets of any one I've been in. There's even a little cafe in the lobby area. You'd think I'd be a member. I would if I lived in Sioux Falls.

This place is amazing! So many different ways to get your exercise is even with existing health problems making it harder then normal. The pools are a really great way to work out if the other machines aren't up your alley. While the membership is a bit high you do get a lot of benefits! Including the fact that the memberships aren't on contract, so if you're unable to pay them it's much easier to cancel then other gyms. Lastly because it's offered by Avera it can go on your HSA if you have one, making it just a bit easier to manage!

I think the Avera Fitness Center isn't the fitness center it was known as 15 years ago...Don't get me wrong, it's still a pretty nice place, but it seems to have an "old boys club" feel to it. The color schemes are dated, but the equipment is of high quality. The reason I bring up the decor and clientele is because of the price. My wife and I pay just over $100 a month. We have kids, but it's more to take them to the child care portion of the club, so we go at separate times, which means we don't go as often as we would like. With the Great Life perks and lower price, I would strongly consider checking them out. You would think with the competition, Avera would try a little harder to stay relevant. We will probably be dropping our membership soon to make way for a more family friendly option.
