About the Club

Sportsbarn is Chattanooga’s original fitness community. Our members appreciate our boutique club feel and various amenities, and we’ve been awarded by our community for our best-in-class facilities.

We serve the Chattanooga area, with yoga studios, circuit training, cycling, pools, boxing, along with plenty of free weights, weight machines, cardio equipment and child care. We view recovery as a part of fitness as well, and offer hot tubs, sauna, and steam rooms.

Equipment is not maintained. Machines sit idle with repair signs that mean nothing. Rotted rubber grips are never replaced. Members are not notified of major monthly due increases. This place has bad vibes now. So many folks have ditched Sports Barn in 2025, including myself. The response below (ha!) shows just how out-of-touch this place has become.

Yet another long-term member leaving with yet another 1-star review.

Bottom line: Don’t sign up. This gym once offered great value, multiple clean and well-kept locations, and a real sense of community. Today, it is overpriced, poorly maintained, and down to a single location that’s literally falling apart.

Broken equipment is the norm here, not the exception. Long-term members like myself have even resorted to fixing things ourselves by rewrapping handles, tightening loose smith machine bars, and dealing with cold plunges that have been “coming soon” for months. That should speak volumes about how far this gym has slipped.

The one bright spot is the staff in childcare, especially Ms. Ellen, who has been incredible to our daughter since day one. Jay on the morning shift is also consistently kind and professional. Without them, we would have left much sooner.

Unfortunately, the management is where things truly collapsed. While I was in the process of canceling my membership, I personally witnessed Karen, the acting manager, openly speaking negatively about other members. Although I’d mostly had decent interactions with her before, seeing that level of unprofessionalism confirmed that leaving was the right decision and reinforced my concern for the loyal members still trying to stick it out.

If you’re considering joining, don’t. What used to be a great place has deteriorated into an overpriced disappointment, and until leadership changes course, I cannot recommend it to anyone.

SportsBarn has gone downhill fast. Since new ownership, prices jumped 30–50% overnight with zero notice, equipment stays broken, and management is unprofessional—mocking member concerns instead of fixing problems. Childcare workers are amazing! They are the ONLY reason to go here. They should be paid more, especially Ellen and Shahira.

The manager and owners actions are absolutely child-like. The owner is absolutely nowhere to be found. They take no accountability for their actions and blame the customers who keep them in business, as you can blatantly see in their comments to the reviews below.

ISSUES
- There are almost never any clean towels and I constantly see employees standing around doing nothing. I have seen this several times and talked to many people in the locker room about it. This is the owners and managers fault for their lack of accountability and care.

- Lack of cleanliness. I have found roaches throughout the place, the steam room and the sauna. The steam room was rarely ever cleaned and the benches in the sauna are broken, which is literally a lawsuit waiting to happen when someone sits down and it breaks and they hurt themselves. Once again, the owner and management couldn’t care less.

- The cold plunge that was promised in the email about the price rising is still not ready and it came in July. I checked every time I went for months and it literally has just been sitting there.

- This is clearly an ownership problem. The owner need to look themselves in the mirror and realize if they are going to run a gym and charge a “luxury price” that they need to be putting in enough work to make this place luxurious and that starts with cleaning. It also starts with standards. There are no standards here and that is evident. I can guarantee I will receive a generic comment about how “The sports barn wants to serve the community and has standards” and other nonsense that means nothing. Your words typed out to people mean nothing. Your actions going forward with your customers is what matters. If you want to stay in business, I would highly suggest changing your training, standards, and overall model of business because your lack of accountability and care are going to keep people leaving and going elsewhere. I wish you luck and change going forward. Oh. I also wish you paid your childcare workers better, because they are the only redeemable quality about your gym.

Go elsewhere. The only positive is the childcare workers who are phenomenal- specifically Ellen and Sahira- who deserve all the praise in the world. They get 10 out of 10 stars.

I find it rather interesting that they can increase our rates by a ridiculous amount- family membership went from 103 to 144- without any notice or warning until after it was done, yet ‘require’ we ‘request to cancel’ our membership and give a 30 days notice. Maybe if we were given the same courtesy for the price increase, this would make sense.

As you can see per the email attached, they sent an email July 3 to let us know of a price increase effective July 1- knowing this amount had already been taken from our accounts on the 1st. Thankfully, we were able to speak to a former manager who corrected the price increase and brought us back down to the original amount. However, this does confirm previous posts that the cost of membership was selective for each person.

The only improvements that had taken place at that point was some new paint and the replacement of 8 broken treadmills that had been broken for months, and some new toys for the kids area.

When things break, they remain broken for far too long, they don’t have towels stocked half the time, the steam room consistently smells moldy and although they have had cold plunges purchased and in the gym for at lease a month, only one was functioning when we left.

The true reason for leaving, however, is the fact that management will openly talk negatively about members in front of others- staff or members, it doesn’t matter. When confronted about this, rather than taking ownership and apologizing management deflects and acts shocked they are bring addressed about this. We are no longer highschoolers and those in management positions should act accordingly.

I’m incredibly sad to leave our phenomenal childcare workers, but unfortunately that is the only positive for this gym

Longtime Member Leaving SportsBarn: Here's Why

After over five years as a loyal SportsBarn member and having personally referred four new members along the way, I always had nothing but positive things to say about the gym. That is, until the recent change in ownership.
Unfortunately, since SportsBarn was sold, it’s been a steady decline marked by poor communication, lack of accountability, and unprofessional management. I’ve tried repeatedly to get in touch with the new owners, but they’ve been completely unreachable. The acting manager, Karen, has offered little help and has, in fact, been a major reason why my friends and I are choosing to end our memberships at the end of September.
1. The Rate Increase Debacle
One of the most frustrating issues occurred in July 2025, when membership rates were suddenly increased by 30–50%, with no prior notice. This blindsided many members, especially newer ones who had just signed up under the old, lower rates. We later learned that the owners had gone on vacation during the Fourth of July week, leaving the staff to deal with the fallout.
An email intended to notify members of the increase was never actually sent until the day after the charges hit accounts, only after a wave of complaints from over 20 members. There were no added amenities to justify the rate hike. It felt underhanded and poorly handled, though the previous manager did his best to smooth things over.
2. The Final Straw: Safety Concerns and Unprofessional Behavior
Most recently, I raised a valid concern about a safety issue involving our toddlers walking through an active gym floor, something we never had to do before. The side entrance to the childcare area had been locked without explanation. With kids weaving through people and gym equipment, it was not only inconvenient, but potentially dangerous.
When I brought this up with Karen, she appeared receptive and said she'd speak with the owners. However, what followed was both disappointing and inappropriate. A friend of mine overheard Karen talking disrespectfully about my concern, saying things like:
"I don't know what the hell that was all about."
"If she doesn't like it, she can just leave the gym."
She even mocked the fact that I had done a dance to the music while chatting with a friend, something totally harmless, especially in a gym environment. Other employees were shocked by her remarks, and sadly, this wasn’t the first time Karen has made unprofessional comments about member concerns. MANY other members have also confirmed unprofessional comments made by Karen as well.
That moment confirmed it was finally time to leave.
3. Ongoing Facility Issues
The rate hike might be easier to accept if the facility reflected the “luxury” price point, but unfortunately, that hasn’t been the case. We’ve experienced:
• Broken gym equipment left unrepaired for months
• A cold plunge that was promised but never delivered
• Locker room issues that go unresolved for weeks at a time
These may seem like small things individually, but they add up, and members shouldn’t have to deal with them on a regular basis, especially at this price point.
4. The Bright Spot: Childcare
The only reason we stayed as long as we did was because of the incredible childcare staff, specifically Miss Ellen. The hours of operation, the thoughtful remodel of the kids' area, and the level of care given by the childcare team have been unmatched. Miss Ellen is truly a gem, and it broke our hearts to say goodbye to her. She’s been the one consistent, exceptional part of SportsBarn through all these changes.
In Closing:
This has been a tough decision, but one we felt necessary for our peace of mind, safety, and respect as paying members. I hope SportsBarn leadership sees this as an opportunity to reflect, reconnect with their community, and rebuild.

Great facility and staff. Madison always has a smile on her face and makes some of the best smoothies at their new smoothie bar. Pool has plenty of chairs and has been exceptionally clean this summer. I would recommend the sports barn to anyone!

I have been at Sportsbarn for almost 5 years now and I can say that a lot has changed within a year. Great things! You can tell the owners have been working hard and giving the members what they want.
I’ve noticed the owner has been at the front desk multiple times addressing members concerns and has always been so polite. Also, the pool has been looking better than ever! Their staff really do work hard to do their best at keeping the gym clean and making members happy. Honestly can’t beat the membership price for all the amenities that it comes with and won’t find a gym like this anywhere else in Chattanooga.

Recent membership dues increase with no notice, and after some research, it seems they pick and choose what prices they charge regardless of tenure/family/couple/single plans... all across the board! GO ELSEWHERE. Been a member over 10yrs. Left in January. New owners took in negative direction. Old equipment, sticky duct tape on handles, nasty bathrooms and locker areas. Just dirty, no up keep. My dues were increased with no notice. Come to find out, an email was sent the day before dues were withdrawn. The rate increase was nearly 30% btw. They had a typo in my email address at the front desk so I never got the news. Ive been told 3 different times I would be called about my membership but silence. The owners and management are running this place into the ground. The cancelling process has been very dodgy too. The gym fired most of their trainers and staff recently so it’s a weird vibe in there. Do not go here

I've been a Sportsbarn member for about a year and a half, and have had a great experience so far. I primarily go for the yoga and workout classes, all of which are high quality and thoughtfully led. I've especially been loving the addition of Kevin's X-Train class. I avoided classes like this for over two years after I had a not-so-great experience elsewhere and got injured when a coach pressured me into lifting way more than I had any business lifting. Needless to say, I was hesitant to try again, but Kevin's class has changed that for me. He creates a supportive environment where everyone is encouraged to move in a way that feels good for their body. He's attentive and encouraging without being pushy, and he's been great at helping me modify movements to allow me to work around my lingering shoulder issues. I also appreciate that he makes everyone feel welcome--he learns everyone's names on day one, introduces people to each other, and just makes the whole experience of walking into a new fitness class way less intimidating. 10/10 recommend checking it out!

If I could give this gym 0 stars I would. They closed their East Brainerd location and moved us over to their Hixson location and kept charging us without our permission. Apparently a contract was signed, yet we never received a contract to sign or spoke to anyone there about the switch. My husband has been getting the run around, too when it comes to cancelling the membership we never signed up for. He’s spoken with 3 or 4 different people who have all told him different things. We were told we’d get our money back and now someone else is telling us we won’t be getting our money back. Very frustrated. Do better

I recently started attending the group fitness classes at Sportsbarn and I have been blown away by the quality and variety of classes offered. The instructors are amazing, providing motivating and challenging workouts while also offering modifications for all fitness levels.

You guys are terrible people. I joined in November, when I joined I paid a year upfront as I prefer that over monthly fees. Before doing so I made sure if for unforseen circumstances I had to cancel I would be refunded for the unused months. I was assured I would be if that happened. Even my contract makes that clear. I had some major health setbacks and had to leave Tennessee. I've now been trying to get my refund for over a month. The person in email gave some kind of excuse and told me they'd have it handled a week ago, still nothing. I've now had to file a claim with my bank after giving more then enough time for your gym to make it right. On top of trying to handle my health set back I now have to deal with you people trying to to steal my money. Lucky for me I keep all paperwork, and contracts, on top of the email agreeing to handle the matter. My bank has assured me they'll handle it but I never should have had to do that.

Let me start off first by saying this is an overall great gym. The equipment is excellent with regard to both quality and quantity, the interior environment is clean, the staff members are friendly, the extra perks (hot tub, steam room, and sauna) are there, and the layout is very organized. However, there is one specific issue with this gym that is in dire need of attention and that is the lack of gym etiquette on behalf of some of the other members. Far too often people try to occupy multiple machines at a time. Sure it's perfectly okay to use as many machines as you want as that is what they are there for, but trying to hold more than one piece of equipment hostage by leaving your sweaty towel, dirty wipes, phone, etc on a machine is just absurd. Sometimes I have even seen people try to hog up four machines at once and if you try to use one of them they selfishly claim "I'm using that" The fact of the matter is this. If you want to hog multiple machines at once go build your own personal gym.

We mostly go to the Hixson Sports Barn. The staff are friendly and personable. They always greet us when we walk in the door. They also answer any questions we have. The gym is always clean and there is always staff cleaning or doing laundry. We love using their pool and love our friends that we have made while working out here for years. It is a very family oriented. Great people, staff, and environment!!! We love this place. It's such a stress reliever to come here!

Nice gym, not usually crowded, but HOT in the summer. In the afternoon the downstairs thermometer reads 79.4. Mercifully, I haven't seen an upstairs thermometer, so I can only guess exactly how miserable it is near the treadmills/ellipticals.

Pool heater was broken down all winter so had to go to east location to swim. This is a hassle to drive across town. After it was supposed to be fixed in April, I returned but it still wasn't working and water was dirty. Pool maintenance at North is unacceptable. Also lockers are cheap fiber board and several are broken. East location is in better repair.

The air conditioning does not work properly. It is between 75-84 degrees in the cardio area every afternoon . I have emailed regularly with no acknowledgement that it will be corrected. I love the equipment and lay out of the facility. It's a perfect location and the fact that there is an outside pool is such a plus but communication with the manager over the temperature has gone nowhere. Its ridiculous to workout in that type of environment .
