I came for a coaching session with Eric today because I am working my way back into weightlifting after some injuries and setbacks. He helped me to discover modifications to each lift that will allow me to ease back in! I highly recommend Starting Strength for anyone, whether you’re curious about whether weightlifting is for you, or you’ve been lifting for years. They will help you get started or coach you in form and programming. They have classes, and online coaching available.

I have been involved in Starting Strength since December 2022. I only started because my husband was interested in the program-so I joined thinking I would quit once he developed a good exercise routine. I had a lot of other activities I was doing (dance, yoga, cycling classes, weight training machines at gym...) and just knew I would not like barbell training. Almost 3 years later...I am still training 3x week because the program is great! I had cervical disc fusion surgery C5-7 in 2008 and I am stronger than ever, which has dramatically decreased my episodes of neck pain/strain that I have been dealing with since the surgery. I am very active, but have always had trouble building muscle and getting stronger. I am able to do the other activities I love (like dance and yoga) with less pain. Eric is my primary coach and he is wonderful! He is very patient, letting me tell him what I want to do (then pointing out maybe what I should do...). He has been great at always being able to modify my program each session as needed. I have done a lot of group classes and one-on-one personal training sessions throughout the years in various activities. I love the Starting Strength model of having your own personal coach- yet also getting the motivation/interaction from the other people in my small group sessions. It is the best of both worlds. All the coaches are great. I have a mostly plant-based diet and have gotten nutritional advice on appropriate protein intake as well as advice on sleep, recovery, injury prevention and management, etc. There are super-fit crazy strong young people to elderly movement-restricted individuals as well, and everyone in-between in the sessions. I have been amazed at how they can effectively train people of all ages and ability. It is a great program!!!

I’ve been part of Starting Strength Memphis for a year now, and the growth I’ve experienced—both in strength and confidence as a lifter—has been incredible. The coaches design training programs tailored to your individual goals, and everything is intentional and focused, which is something I truly value.
Huge thanks to my coach, Eric! I attend the 5 AM class, and no matter how early it is, he always shows up with a smile and energy that sets the tone for the entire session.
If you’re looking for a supportive, results-driven environment to build strength, I highly recommend Starting Strength Memphis.

Review by Thomas Malone: Stronger, Leaner, and Healthier at 47 Thanks to Starting Strength and Coach Scott Acosta
At 47 years old, I didn’t expect to feel this strong—or to be in the best shape I’ve been in for years. Over the past year, Starting Strength has helped me lose weight, build real muscle, and completely shift how I think about health and fitness. A huge part of that success is thanks to my coach, Scott Acosta.
Before Starting Strength, I was like a lot of people in their 40s—carrying extra weight, out of shape, and feeling like my best physical years were behind me. I had tried various workouts over the years, but nothing ever stuck or made a lasting impact. That changed when I committed to Starting Strength with Scott’s guidance.
The program itself is simple, but incredibly effective: barbell training focused on the basic compound lifts—squat, deadlift, press, and bench. What made all the difference was having a knowledgeable coach in my corner. Scott not only taught me proper technique, but kept me accountable, adjusted the program to fit my progress, and motivated me every step of the way.
With Scott’s help, I steadily increased the weight on all my lifts while dropping body fat and adding muscle. The results have been undeniable—my clothes fit better, my energy is higher, and I feel stronger and more capable in every area of life. I’m not just looking better—I’m living better.
What I’ve learned is that it’s never too late to take control of your health and build real strength. Starting Strength gave me the structure, and Scott gave me the support and expertise to stick with it and succeed.
If you’re in your 40s or beyond and thinking it’s too late to get in shape, I’m proof that it’s absolutely possible—with the right coach and the right program.

Starting Strength has helped me get stronger and feel better. Added to that, the personal attention to goals and correct form when working out, plus the pleasant atmosphere in the gym, have been a great blessing. Eric is a very helpful coach. He's kind of laid back while staying focused on what I'm doing and how to do it correctly. I feel encouraged when there, seeing everyone at whatever level they are strength-wise, gradually get stronger.

After experiencing running injuries from which I could never quite recover my physical therapist suggested I start a lifting program. Also, I had been diagnosed with osteopenia so I reluctantly joined Starting Strength. I’ve been there three years now and not only am I stronger but my Dexa Scan score has improved. The classes are small and the other participants are encouraging so I look forward to going to class.
Scott is extremely knowledgeable and careful to ensure my lifts are executed properly. Each workout is prescribed individually—it’s not a one workout fits all routine.

I've just gotten started, but I am already increasing in strength and have more energy. Eric has been patient in working with me restart weight training, especially on sleepy mornings when I have difficulty calculating the plates I need to add for my next set :). Having recently passed my 61st birthday. I wanted to make sure I was using proper techniques. Having been away from strength training for a while I really didn't want to return to the snobby gym culture, and Starting Strength in Germantown has been a perfect fit for me.

I stumbled upon the Starting Strength barbell program around 8 years ago in my mid- to late-20s. I assembled a home gym and attempted the program outlined in the Starting Strength book. Squat, deadlift, bench press, overhead press, and power cleans - incrementally increasing weight each workout. I read all of the books by Mark Rippetoe - thrice. I watched hours and hours of YouTube videos on form and proper technique. Seemed simple enough.
I would progress quickly, moving up in weight as prescribed; however, without fail, I would eventually hit a point where I could not move any more weight. I'd struggle through a few more workouts and then decide to "reset", starting the process over again. I faffed about like this for 8 years, with plenty of hiatuses sprinkled in.
In September of '24, I had had enough of stalling. I decided to have a form check done at the Starting Strength Gym in Germantown. I thought, "Probably need a few tweaks here and there and I'll be good to go". Oh boy. Was I was so, so wrong! My form was fully incorrect on basically every lift. It was eye-opening. Since I had been doing it incorrectly for so long, I quickly realized I would need continuous coaching.
I've been with the gym for 4 months now. My squat is up 125 lbs, deadlift up 135 lbs, bench up 55 lbs, press up 45 lbs, and power clean up 55 lbs from the heaviest sets I could manage on my own. In 4 months. 8 years wasted faffing about, ha!
There is a missing parenthetical appendage for the name of this gym and program; it should be "Starting Strength (and Keep Getting Stronger)". I expect to lift double my body weight by the close of 2025, something unbelievable just a year ago.
The coaches are consummate professionals. They strike the perfect balance between encouraging and constructively critical. The atmosphere in the gym is collegial with plenty of laughs and cheering on from the other lifters. This isn't a "bro" gym. There is a wide gamut of individuals showing up consistently to improve their mind and body via barbell training. I am fortunate to not have any physical ailments or injuries, but I have been awe-struck with how the coaches find ways to accommodate lifters who do have past injuries or unusual anthropometry. Make no mistake - accommodate does not equate to easy!
If you want to get strong, and you are willing to consistently show up and do the work, I highly recommend this gym.

Starting Strength Memphis is an incredible gym for everyone, no matter your age or experience level. Scott was kind, professional, and gave me invaluable cues to improve my lifts. The gym isn’t just about strength training; it’s about giving people back their quality of life and building strength that carries over into everyday activities, something especially important as we age. The facility is clean, well-equipped, and fosters an encouraging atmosphere. By far the best gym in the area and worth every penny. Highly recommend it to anyone looking to improve their health and strength!

I did the Starting Strength program sporadically on my own about ten years ago. I ended up stalling on my progress and stopped, frustrated. I restarted weightlifting during the pandemic. After keeping it up for two years straight, I decided to treat myself to a squat rack and a nice 2" barbell with weights during the Black Friday season in 2023. I restarted the program but noticed elbow and upper back pain after two weeks.
I signed up for 2 days/week and immediately learned in the first class what I had been doing wrong. I haven't had any elbow or back pain since I've been coached.
In the two months I've been coming to Starting Strength Memphis, my bench has gone up 60 lbs, my overhead press 45 lbs, my squat 100 lbs and my deadlift 65 lbs. I feel confident when I lift now. No pains other than garden variety muscle soreness that I can fix with a little ice and Tylenol.
The gym atmosphere is very positive and supportive, with all ages, skill levels and goals. You have everything from 75-year-old women lifting for general health purposes to younger guys working toward a 350 lb squat. The feedback is immediate, and the workouts are meticulously tailored toward your goals and abilities. The coaches (I've worked with both Scott and Gretchen) are highly experienced, always ready to provide advice and guidance and consistently upbeat and encouraging.

Starting Strength has improved my strength, balance and overall well-being. In 2021, I was needing motivation and guidance to improve my health. I have been exercising / lifting weight since I was 15 years old. I thought that was sufficient with 40 plus years experience. My friend / coach John let me know that I have been exercising, not training. Starting Strength coaches are the most knowledgeable fitness / strength experts in the world have completed a rigorous training course that requires recertification. Strength is the physical attribute that allows you to interact with the environment. The Starting Strength program uses time tested movement patterns that consistently increase strength. Diet and healthy sleep habits encouraged. We are fortunate to have a Starting Strength in Memphis. The members range from teenagers to lifters in their 70s. I am not a young spandex type. I am an older woman who knew that when you can't get yourself off the toilet, they put you in a 'Home'. I wasn't to that point but could see the writing on the wall. I visited Starting Strength because a friend wanted me to see what they were up to. I had NEVER EVER thought about doing bar bell strength training in my entire life. The most I had probably lifted was a fork to my mouth (well, almost the most). The coaches asked if I wanted to give it a little try, and I was hooked. The exercises are structured, incrementally growing depending on my own body. There is lots of resting time in between, and I liked that, and the knowledgeable coaching staff made me feel safe as a newbie to the serious exercise scene. What I have found is that I have, indeed become much stronger which helps in all sorts of areas of my life. And I have done it in a community of delightful students and caring, competent, coaches. Gretchen, John and Scott are all fabulous and I have had coaching from all of them. Do yourself a favor...give it a try. Usually there is a free introductory session offered and it is well worth the time and energy if you are thinking that 'time, it keeps rolling along.' I'll see you there!

I was really working myself so hard to firm up my body with “killer” fitness boxing workouts 2-3 times a week & power walking too. When I saw someone come into my husband’s store wearing a STARTING STRENGTH t-shirt inquired as to what it meant. He told me about this professionally coached/supervised weight lifting/body sculpting program that had arrived in Germantown a couple of years ago.
Fast forward to today, 3 months later, after joining & attending 2 times a week.
I am over 50 & my arms that were starting to get slightly crepey have firmed up & actually become curvy & shapely in my clothes. I’ve also lost inches in my core areas due to firming up all over. The coaches are extremely knowledgeable & attentive& supervise my sets personally. The # of people in the class is limited & the scheduling offers a wide range of flexibility.
I feel so challenged & successful! I am a very feminine woman & found out that I WOULD NOT
beef up like a man!🙀💄 What a lucky day for me when I started this program!!!
I still do power walks & enjoy being active daily, but now I have improved strength to accomplish everyday tasks without injury!

I started training at this gym about a year and a half ago. I've never been an athlete, and the thought of starting strength training over 40 years of age was intimidating to say the least. Luckily for me, the coaches at Starting Strength Memphis knew just how to work with me. Their program is simple but effective. In the time I have been here, I have gotten stronger than I ever thought possible. Not only that, but my health has significantly improved as well. Everything from my body composition to my blood work is in a much better place than when I started. I highly recommend Starting Strength Memphis to anyone of any age or athletic ability.

I've been a member of Starting Strength Memphis for two years. Prior to joining, I dealt with chronic back issues and frequent muscle pulls and soreness--typical of a middle-aged man. A year in, I noticed activities that used to give me back soreness no longer did, and muscle pulls have become virtually non-existent.
Additionally, my strength gains have been consistent and substantial. My trainer--Scott Acosta--programs each workout, then watches each work rep while offering helpful counsel on my technique. He took the time to find out my goals for strength training, then tailored my workouts to achieve those goals.
And my experience is the rule, not the exception. By training on the same days and times three days a week, usually with the same people, I've been able to watch and cheer on as others have achieved their goals--different ages, body types, male and female, and all levels of experience with strength training. It's a place where everyone feels comfortable, even my 16 year-old daughter who now trains with me.
Starting Strength likely costs a bit more each month than the typical gym where they hardly know you and are oblivious to your strength goals--but those who commit to this philosophy, show up consistently, and do the work see meaningful results, get encouragement along the way, and have fun in the process.
I highly recommend Starting Strength Memphis to anyone who is serious about changing their body and getting stronger for whatever their life goals look like--alleviating chronic pain, keeping up with their kids/grandkids, building muscle, or just feeling better about themselves.

Proven results, no gimmicks, the feel of personal training without the price, you must be talking about Starting Strength Memphis! It was easy until I hit my 40’s! All the sudden, it was like the wheels fell off & no matter what I did to workout, it wasn’t enough. I was gaining weight, feeling tired/sluggish, bones/joints hurt & I was overall unhappy with the way I looked & felt. I began researching workouts for women after 40 & consistently came up with lifting weights & building lean muscle mass as the key to success. The HIIT classes & cardio were not what I needed, in fact they were counterproductive, raising my cortisol levels. I decided that as soon as my kids were back in school, I was going to get myself into the right gym. I walked into SSM & spoke with Gretchen about joining the gym. I signed up that day & have been coming 3x/week ever since! (Yes, I said 3x/week, shocking, but you don’t have to eat like a bird & workout 6x/wk to see results!!) It’s been 5 months & I feel great, I can visibly see a difference in my body & I’m stronger at 43 than I was in my 30’s. I’m also not painfully sore after workouts & miserable during them. I’ve finally found a workout that works for me, personalized for me! If you’re looking for a small environment with personalized training, this is your gym!! Gretchen is my trainer & she’s fabulous, Scott & John are also wonderful! Don’t keep pushing it off, you’ll be so happy you made the move to Starting Strength Memphis! Remember, better to be the oldest person in the gym than the youngest at the nursing home!

I had a training session at Starting Strength Memphis. The staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and professional. The coaching provided on the lifts was very helpful for improving my technique. The gym itself was excellent - very clean and great equipment. Highly recommended.

I never thought I would go to a place and workout with other people and feel comfortable but I have found my place! Not only am I comfortable but the atmosphere is very encouraging and the BIG BONUS is the results! Starting Strength is for everyone. My mom is even joining in on the FUN! I see people with their teenagers and their elderly parents all working out. Workouts are made to fit everyone.

I've been a member at this gym for three months. The coaches here are devotees of their craft i.e. making regular people as strong as possible. I am not an athlete in the strictest sense. Just a regular Joe with a wife and two boys. But I become an athlete when I train here. When you enroll at SS Memphis, you're not just buying a membership. You're investing in your own agency and wellbeing.
