About the Club

STEPS stands for "Scientific Training and Exercise Prescription Specialists."

STEPS Fitness personal training was founded in 1986 by Dr. Irv Rubenstein, Exercise Physiologist. In 1989, STEPS built its first facility, laying the lasting foundation for personal fitness training in Middle Tennessee. At the time, STEPS was the first and only exclusively personal fitness training facility between the coasts

STEPS Fitness personal fitness trainers employ the most current and innovative training techniques based on technology, scientific literature, and creative sharing of ideas and techniques.

Covid 19 Update: STEPS is making Herculean efforts to keep the facilities clean and safe, with equipment & alcohol sprayers and sanitizers all around.

I’ve been weight training for 27 years and have always enjoyed it. Recently I got super busy and didn’t get to the gym hardly at all. When I decided to get back in the game, six months had passed. I was 66 years old and out of shape for the first time in 27 years. I knew I needed a trainer.

I did a bunch of online research and decided to try. Steps. I met with Irv who determines which trainer is right for each client. He assigned Kyle.

Kyle is the perfect choice for me. He’s specific in his direction and corrects my form to ensure I get the most from the workout. I have a great time training with him. The time flies by.

Thanks to Irv for pairing us. I look forward to getting back in shape with Kyle’s help.

I came to Dr. Irv with a painful and chronic case of Plantars Fasciitis. Dr. Irv recommended and demonstrated a couple simple, quick exercises that would strengthen my foot and restore the structure of the fascia in my foot. He also explained how to keep the inflammation down to break the chronic pain cycle.

Prior to visiting Dr. Irv I had three different β€œexperts” look at my foot and offer remedies. Now, only a couple weeks after seeing Dr. Irv, my foot is 50- percent better. I have been living with Plantars Fasciitis for months and thanks to Dr. Irv I am well on my way to normalcy! I highly recommend his experience and expertise on anything related to physical rehabilitation.

I am so grateful to have found STEPS. I sustained an ankle fracture and felt there was nowhere to go with one weight bearing leg. I was accustomed to fitness being part of my daily life. Darryl has given me back my endorphins and improved my spirits. His experience training athletes has been so helpful. He is creative and patient. Meeting Irv and learning about his expertise, dedication to his clients, and his gym made me feel safe and understood. The space is large and the equipment is full. This is also the cleanest gym I have seen. I most highly recommend STEPS.

This was my very first experience with a private gym and personal trainer. The owner and trainer made me feel very comfortable and at home. The gym is very clean and well equipped. I met Dr. Irv through a friend of mine who totally transformed her health with his expertise. I had a hip replacement from a bad fall and I’ve struggled with tight hips, limited range of motion, bursitis and Arthritis. I turned 60 last fall and I knew if I was ever going to get better I had to go to someone that understood what I was dealing with. I knew I had the motivation, I just needed the right help. Irv was my answer. In my first assessment he knew quite quickly where I needed to work on my body to get my strength back and that range of motion I had been missing. I’m so happy to say I’m on my way and I feel 100% better because of what Irv has shown me for the right exercise, nutrition and complete wellness. I have found a new home for complete recovery at Steps and with Irv. I highly recommend to anyone who thinks their body will never be the same again to go here, see Irv and take your body and your life back!

I am very happy working with Stephanie, my trainer at STEPS Fitness. Whereas my previous training and exercise focused on getting my body stronger without hurting my injured shoulder, I now feel my weaker shoulder is getting stronger! Stephanie has linked me with an app so she can advise me on best ways to round out my fitness plan as I recount what I'm doing at the Y throughout the week. Best of all, I have NO PAIN in my shoulder right now! I feel better now than I have in years. This is what I wanted to achieve and it appears I am on the right path.

Dr Irv continues to preform miracles on my breaking body. He fixed my knees and back when I first started ... now they are pain free. I continued my sports activities, and he fixes the new problems this 67 year old body encounters. Walking 105 holes of golf in 5 days, bike riding the 120 mile Jack and Back, volleyball and pickle ball are still my current activities.

His exercise equipment and facilities are always very clean. The exercise programs always vary and keep you on your toes. Challenge him and he'll kick your butt, but if you are hurting anywhere ... he'll make sure to strengthen and improve your problem area.

I've been going to STEPs for about 10 years. It is the best thing I do for myself, the trainers are great, I'm the fittest I've ever been, and it is all tailored to my needs. Current trainer Darryl Casey is awesome and Irv Rubenstein (owner and trainer) is great. The trainers find whatever fits your needs (strength, cardio, balance, rehab, weight loss, etc). I really like that I get a balanced workout that incorporates all of those elements. I go either on my own or (mostly) together with my significant other (Duet package).

Steps has provided me a place to work out with very knowledgeable trainers at the level my body may be in, i.e. needing rehab, working with various body aches, etc. in an environment that is friendly, not overcrowded and fun to be in. Great people, great place. If you are considering being a healthier you, this is without a doubt the place you have to be.

I have been a cyclist for the past 6 years and have a back injury from years working in emergency services. I found myself in a place where I was unhappy with my health and found it difficult to advance in cycling, specifically endurance and strength. Dr. Irv did a thorough assessment of my fitness and was able to set me up with Latina, who was a perfect match for my needs.

Latina somehow knows exactly how far to push me and what I need. When I need to be pushed beyond my limits, she shows me what I am truly capable of; when I need to heal, she puts me back together. She catches me every time I break form and try to cheat an exercise, and although constantly aware of my injuries, she never lets me use them as an excuse. Latina has also changed my way of approaching day to day movement, cycling and exercise. Thanks to her not only am I stronger, faster and healthier, but I have developed the mindset of an athlete (or at least I am starting to).

So, yeah. 5 stars

Having broken my back and neck skiing at Vail a decade ago, I needed a custom excercise regiment. Before finding STEPS, whenever exercising on my own, I seemed to be exasperating my constant pain, not alleviating it.

A friend recommended STEPS more than a year ago. Dr. Irv listened to my concerns and needs. He tailored a routine that has allowed me to live pain free and regain my desired level of fitness. STEPS facilities were spotless, well maintained, and provided enough variety to keep me from getting bored. Dr. Irv even worked with me to accommodate my crazy schedule. I've been mining the golden advice from Dr. Irv for more years than I'd like to count but thanks to his excellent and ongoing advice I am feeling as good as I've ever felt and my fitness level and strength are those of somebody half my age. I was a strictly free-weight/machine lifter before I started taking advice from Irv but he has won me over with some of his highly innovative routines and techniques. The best part is that there have been no over-use injuries or time gaps taken to heal from strains. The man knows his stuff.

Irv Rubenstein, the owner and trainer, is a Dr. of Kinesiology and REALLY knows how to rehab an injury and/or improve your overall fitness. I started going to STEPS at my husband's suggestion. Having been athletically active earlier in my life, I was now out of shape. So I agreed to try! It has now been 3 years. I feel much stronger and fitter, have lost pounds and inches, and in general found a new friend (therapist!) in my trainer. Our conversations make our sessions interesting as well as productive. Being accountable to someone seems to be a necessity for me to exercise!

A highlight of every week is the time I spend at S.T.E.P.S. There are many factors that make it the workout/training spot for me.
The layout of the large gym space is well-structured, and there is a wide range of machines and up-to-date equipment. There are also wide ranges of age, fitness, and ability levels of the clients.
The locker room is large and private and provides amenities for showering and dressing. The gym is clean.
The trainers are educated and professional. The staff is knowledgeable and committed to the success and health of the clients. My trainer, Irv, is patient and encouraging, and he creates a comfortable atmosphere that allows me to discuss my physical insecurities and flaws. Working at S.T.E.P.S. every week for several years has made me a far healthier person.
If you are looking for a serious gym with friendly, expert trainers, I highly recommend S.T.E.P.S.

I have been a STEPS client for eight years. Before STEPS I had worked with the gyms and other trainers, but have never had the same quality as what I experience at STEPs. Their trainers are good at meeting you at your level of fitness and physical needs. They can cover a large range of goals from range of motion and flexibility to being pushed to your strength and cardio limits. They are especially good with working with or around injuries or physical limitations.

Before surgery, consult with STEPS. Four years ago (age 62) I developed arthritis in both knees, my active live was miserably painful. Double knee replacement was THE strongest option to continue my lifestyle. Today I am pain free (golf, volleyball, biking, pickleball, etc.) … amazing!!! No pain pills, aspirin, etc. … all thanks to Irv’s custom program for me at STEPS.

Without a doubt, the best place to go for assistance with strength, health, balance, and flexibility. Teachers are unusually knowledgeable and experienced and tailor programs specifically to meet the needs and goals of their students.
