I love the energy at Esquina Tango. I've gone to the Thursday tango class/social, one Samba class so far, and I'm excited to check out Kizomba Sundays soon. The instructors are fun and passionate about dance, and the venue is welcoming and vibrant. If you're looking for a fun space to learn dance and have community, this is the place!

My first class was great! I dropped into an intermediate tango class. The studio has an amazing vibe and I was immediately met with friendly and warm people who noticed it was my first time and took a moment to say hello. Class was super fun and Monica the teacher was really great, too - she made sure I felt included and took time to give me feedback. I’ll definitely be back!

This class is unbelievably fun! You can feel the supportive community with chatter before and after class. Everyone is so warm and welcoming. And the dance moves are easy to learn with all the repetition. You will break a sweat and connect with a fun crowd, even if you're a little shy like me. Stephanie is a fabulous instructor with great energy. Try this class!

It moves at a comfortable pace for newbies and there is room for the more experienced dancer to add some personal flair to the combination we are learning and practicing in class. Don't wait! Lorena Ermocida & Pancho Martinez Pey gave a wonderful series of five workshops this past weekend. The two teachers complement each other nicely, either expanding on the words and demonstration of the other, or introducing additional concepts.

All of the work was grounded in preliminary movements or figures that built up to the major concept of each workshop. All of the discussion, demonstration, and dancing together formed a cohesive message and method for clear and comfortable dance.

I also appreciated their treatment of improvisational opportunities within the main concept, introducing students to creative options within the fundamental figures.

I thoroughly enjoyed the workshops.

I had a truly wonderful experience at the recent tango workshop with Lorena Ermocida and Pancho Martinez Pey. They are not only world-class professional dancers but also exceptional instructors. Their teaching style was clear, encouraging, and full of personal attention—they made sure everyone received individual guidance throughout the class.

The group size was perfect: large enough to create great energy, yet small enough that both leads and follows got plenty of time to work closely with the material. The balance between leaders and followers was very good, which made the learning experience even smoother and more enjoyable.

Their performance during the workshop was absolutely breathtaking. Watching them dance live was inspiring and gave so much depth to the lessons they taught. Their musicality, connection, and artistry are simply on another level.

I will definitely attend again if they return to town. It was such a helpful, inspiring, and unforgettable experience!

Fun fun fun!!!! Very good instruction with welcoming, no judgment, positive energy. My instructor Robbie shares many different concepts in learnable, clear sections and is happy to address all questions! Class prices are economical and there are lots of different types of dancing to learn:) Mix of folks coming alone, as a couple, or with a small group. Robbie lets the couples who want to stay coupled, and the rest of us changed partners about every 3-5 minutes. She is flexible with different learning styles and comfort zones. She encourages us to try both leader and follower role in our dance journey so we can better understand dance. Her love of dance is so apparent and it energizes the room. I feel so lucky to have found this gem and will continue to come to Esquina Tango including trying different classes and instructors!

I feel lucky to live in same city as Equina Tango. There are so many amazing classes and instructors, and a feeling of community and cultural appreciation.

One of the classes I love the most is Afro Latin body movement and folkloric dance with Alfonso. He's a talented and thoughtful instructor who brings a lot of heart and patience to class. Highly recommend for anyone of any level who wants to learn more about the roots of so much of the Salsa and other dancing that is so popular these days -- or even if you just want to challenge your body (and coordination) to move in new ways!

I've been learning Afro-Latin dances with Alfonso for like almost two years now.
It's such a great class!
Alfonso is super kind, supportive, and positive in his teaching. It makes every class a real joy. I always end up with a big smile and good energies.
Alfonso is also super patient and has really good pedagogy skills. He brings us to fascinating new areas of dancing - but also often speaks about the myths, history, and culture, beyond the dances, which makes it super interesting!
Highly recommended

Esquina Tango is truly one of my favorite things about living in East Austin. Monica and Gustavo have done an incredible job of building not only a beginner-friendly Latin dance studio, but a loving community hub for all ages. I treasure every class and social I attend there! The tango and salsa classes are fun, engaging, and great for building your foundation of skills with nonjudgmental partners.

My current favorite class is Afro-Latin Movement with Alfonso Alarcón. It is helping my deepen my technique and body awareness as I advance in my salsa practice. What I find particularly special about this class is how Alfonso supports us in connecting with the deep cultural roots of Afro-Latin and Cuban contemporary dance - whether by telling us stories of Yoruba deities, bringing in amazing live drummers, or bringing traditional skirts to practice in. I feel honored to get to learn the significance and history behind folkloric dances with Alfonso.

I went with my partner to try a beginner's Cuban-Casino salsa class. There were two "instructors" who wouldn't stop making fun of people's dancing and inappropriate comments. I think they should consider if those instructors are really qualified for a beginner level since they don't promote a safe and relaxed environment for beginners. Besides, they lack patience and explicitly point out those who are slower. Unfortunately, we won't be signing up, and I hope they reconsider their teaching methodology.

A great salsa teacher. Why I still only give three stars: because far too many follower were missing. Well I'm a follower, but you can tell exactly which leader didn't have a follower when the steps were explained, they basically "learned with the air" instead with a person. These were the leader who weren't very good at swapping steps and were constantly apologizing. So it would be great if the dance school would attract more followers.

Now I have to change to one star (this is for the great work of salsa teacher Robby).
What happend today: Unfortunately there are no lockers in the dance school. The valuables were just lying around on the benches, so I only took my credit card that fit in my pocket. Unfortunately, the card reader didn't accept my credit card, even though I use it to pay for my purchases every day. Esquina tango is only working with swiping the credit card. No other possibility. I asked the lady for another opportunity to pay. For example to insert the card. Not possible. Then I asked at reception to make an exception. I promised to pay the next day with another credit card or cash for 2 days as I would like to come back the following day. She hid behind the fact that she wasn't personally to blame. Unfortunately, she was unwilling to take responsibility for the card reader not working. She ignored me for 20 minutes. Then I asked her politely if she was willing to find a solution. She then respond, completely overwhelmed, that I am rude. Because I spoke to her again? I would have found it humane to apologize for technology that doesn't work. So she rudely asked me to leave the dance school. Well, one less customer. And I am also a follower and there aren't enough of them anyway.
I am from Germany and I can tell you that we don`t treat costumers like that.

Whether you are single or a couple the casual inviting atmosphere is the perfect location for beginner through advanced dancers. I am looking forward to attending the variety of classes and events in the future. Thank you to the entire Esquina staff and especially our Monday evening instructor Alfonso, who made the class fun and easy to follow!

I tried a class in November 2022 and I've been hooked since then. The community here is fantastic. Instructors and students are very friendly, outgoing, personable, and most importantly, inclusive. There is always a friendly smile and words of encouragement. My favorite classes so far are with Alfonso (afro latin) and Robbie (salsa) who bring lots of energy and personality to the class.

I love that there is no partner needed and I can try different classes without needing to find a dance partner. They are always welcoming and the classes are very beginner friendly. Esquina is a community, not just a dance class and that’s why I keep going back. 💚

Edit: on my third set of 10pack classes. Salsa does get packed on tuesdays. But always super welcoming and patient environment

Loved my first class here! It felt very relaxed and informal but I definitely learned new things. They had a social hour after our class where anyone can come and practice, and that was great because I immediately got to use what I learned in class with more experienced dancers. I will definitely be going back for more.

These are the best instructors in town. As a long-time dancer, first time kizomba class taker, I can tell you they are teaching you to dance, not just teaching you "moves." This approach will set you up to succeed with any partner, any song, any venue. And there is a community feel at Esquina I have not found at any other studio in town. Get you some old-Austin culture; support Esquina Tango.

I loved class today (as usual) but working on milonga rhythm and steps was a lot of fun and having individual attention from both Gustavo and Monica was super helpful. Esquina Tango is a special warm and inviting place.

My friends and I love to attend Meli Sambas class as a girls night out. It’s on Monday eve at 7:45 which sounds late but I actually feel rejuvenated after class which is great for a new week. I met my first friend I made in Austin here during a dance sequence where Meli encourages students to interact. I love that I can bring any girlfriend to class because it’s all levels and simply fun!

This class is fabulous fun! I highly recommend it for adults of all ages! You can start at the very basic steps and move at your own pace. Learn to lead or follow or both whichever you prefer. The teacher is encouraging and easy to follow. Her methods work for even people who struggle with dance. Come have fun with us!

Gustavo is super professional and friendly; he's clearly an expert dancer, and is at the same time very attentive to all students. Atmosphere at Esquina is chill and welcoming. Took me only one session to commit as a member. No partner required to come. Everyone rotates and gets the chance to meet all the classmates.

Had a great time. Lovely people, attentive instructor, and the setting/environment is good quality with plenty of space given the number of attendees (around 20ish?). One improvement idea: Please Please Please play more upbeat/faster/optimistic Kizomba/Semba music... We learned how to dance to Kizomba, not necessarily Urban Kiz - different vibe and style in my opinion. 4 out of 5 dance shoes rating :)

I’m speaking to the Tango aspect of Esquina, and Monica and Gustavo. Esquina Tango is the flagship and social/learning mecca for Argentine Tango (with a capital “T”!) in Austin and beyond. (Special events draw people from San Antonio, Houston, Dallas, El Paso and points beyond.) They offer a great range of classes on several days (and nights) of the week. It’s a great community service that they offer two free introductory tango classes - several times during the months. Also milongas (social dances) and practicas each week. It’s your one stop shop for everything Tango in Austin. Check out their class schedule (among others) at AustinTangoDotOrg. We are really lucky here in Austin to have Esquina in our lives. Monica and Gustavo have grown and curated and carefully evolved their little corner into a cultural and community center not just for Tango, but also other Latin dances - salsa, bachata, etc. Yoga, too! I’m not sure if they still offer their Spanish language classes and movie nights since the pandemic. Also live Tango music events on occasion! So much to offer, so much to experience. Big hearts with those two. Big love for those two and that little corner in East Austin.

Tried a free first class, having no experience or knowledge with Tango prior. At no fault of the owners/instructors Gustavo and Monica the studio was a bit filled for about 20 couples. It was hard to hear them teaching at times over music and maybe talking thru masks but overall I would consider returning!
