This place keeps the stiffness and pain at bay that comes from working at a computer all day. I hate gyms and exercise, but I've been seeing Jarrod here on and off for years, because it makes a difference. Cheaper and more effective in the long run than waiting till you need a chiropractor or surgery.

I found Functional Patterns (FP) through a friend. I was having neck and upper back issues for over a year, due to decades of bad posture and several accidents over the years. The initial in-house assessment at FP also found slight scoliosis. FP bases much of their treatment on movement and posture. Initially I was skeptical as the exercises seemed awkward. But my individual trainer, Dennis Nel, kept my nose to the grindstone and I began to ‘get it.’ Dennis is a consummate professional and very patient. After eight months the pain began alleviating itself and I could actually sleep comfortably. I took a leave of absence for travel purposes but plan on going back to continue treatment and work outs with Dennis.

Functional Patterns Texas: Where Posture Is Religion and Progress is a Myth

If Gwyneth Paltrow opened a gym in a strip mall, it would look a lot like Functional Patterns Texas. I walked in with recurring injuries. I walked out six months later with the physique of a haunted Victorian child and the movement patterns of a sedated heron. Somewhere in between, I lost money, muscle mass, and the will to live.

From the start, they promised me the world — a bespoke solution to my biomechanical woes, a transformation into a biomechanical Adonis. I’d fix my back pain and never limp again, they said. I’d walk like a panther, breathe like a god, and ascend to the top shelf of the human movement hierarchy. All I had to do was give up everything else: weightlifting, cardio, joy.

Their first diagnostic tool was an iPhone video of me walking on a treadmill, which they reviewed with the solemnity of a murder investigation. The verdict: I don’t know how to walk. Not “you pronate a bit” — no, I was fundamentally broken, unfit for bipedal existence. My gait, they explained, was “dysfunctional,” and if I didn’t commit for a minimum of six months and sign up for their sacred sequence of micro-lunges and fascial flossing, I might as well give up on having a body altogether.

Reader, I joined.

What followed was months of culty biomechanics cosplay. Every session was a breathless lecture on the subatomic nuances of “patterning” from coaches who looked like they’d never sprinted, lifted, or metabolized a complex carbohydrate. The group classes were filled with milk-toast men and eternally-injured women slow-mowing a runing pose.

I trained 4–5 times a week on top of my weekly private session. I did everything prescribed. My reward? I got weaker. I got sadder. I got lean in the way that people get lean during long hospital stays. They showed me before-and-after photos and beamed with pride. In the before, I looked like a guy who exercised. In the after, I looked like I’d just escaped from a gluten-free prisoner-of-war camp.

And the “bespoke” programming? A rotating mess of conflicting tweaks and jargon, reshuffled weekly. There was no progression. No measurable performance gains. Just endless “corrections” that corrected me into oblivion.

When my contract finally ended, I returned to a real gym — with barbells, sweat, noise, and joy — and it felt like physical rehab from life in a pastel cult of pelvic tilts.

Functional Patterns Texas is a tragedy in stretchy pants: all posture, no power; all theory, no testosterone. A place where results are replaced with rhetoric, and you’re told to give up the world to gain… absolutely nothing.

Don't trust the canned reviews and avoid it. Unless you enjoy paying top dollar to forget how to walk.

Been working with Dennis since October 2024 and after years of chronic back pain and trying so many different modalities I’m definitely a believer in what FP is bringing to the table.

Visible posture improvements and so much better mobility and while I’m not entirely pain free I feel so much better and know I’m on the right path.

See you next week, Dennis!

Functional Patterns is the place to go if you want to make real changes in your body and the way you move! I found FP online after 2 hernia surgeries in 2 years - after an initial assessment with the owner I was paired with Dennis Nel to be my individual practitioner and he has been the perfect coach for me. Dennis has a deep knowledge of the FP training systems and modalities as well as human anatomy in general and is adept at using this knowledge to tailor your training sessions to be exactly what you need at the moment. Training with Dennis has helped me not only rehab from my surgeries but also address the root cause imbalances from being born pigeon-toed so that now I'm moving better than ever in safe, strong, and efficient ways. Dennis truly cares about his clients' well-being and his holistic approach to training and life in general is refreshing and inspiring!

All of the FP practitioners are awesome - as a member, you'll also have access to semi-private training and structured classes in addition to the one-on-one training with your assigned coach. Toni Hiett and the rest are fun, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic about spreading the FP system to help people "Move Intentionally, Not Habitually"!

FP is the kind of gym Ive been looking for my whole life. These guys are body engineers.

The assessment alone was worth two months of traditional PT.

Before I came in I was getting crippling headaches and was struggling to fix my posture despite being very active.

I worked with Dennis Nel and in 6 months I:
1. Transformed my posture
2. Have no more headaches
3. Can sprint 10% faster
4. Added 10 lbs of muscle

I feel that I was not using say 30% of my body, Ive noticed significant gains in general strength in movements we have not trained due to greater core access and overall coordination such as pullups, dips, squats, and so on.

Gyms like FP should be a utility no different than water and power.

Functional Patterns is a truly unique fitness and strength program. After reading so many positive reviews, I knew I had to give it a shot, and it has 100 percent delivered.

I arrived at FP with years of nagging lower back stiffness. A couple rounds of physical therapy sessions didn't really help. However, I began to experience relief soon after starting at FP. I have gained strength, flexibility and balance and have improved my mobility. My quality of life has most definitely improved. I'm much more able to get off the ground and play with my young kids. I hardly notice any back stiffness anymore.

I can't say enough kind words about my practioner, Dennis Nel. His passion for the craft really shines. He is committed to getting you stronger and more functional. He's highly personable and great company. The same goes for the rest of the supportive and welcoming practioners at FP.

A couple of other things. FP is very inclusive. The FP system accomodates a wide range of age levels and physical abilities, a unique charactertic from my experience. And FP also brings a mental aspect. My body awareness has vastly improved. I'm more aware of my posture and how I walk and stand and how everything is connected. FP is a great antidote to the sedentary workplace environment that many of us find ourselves in.

5 stars!

Silvio is the man and a great trainer.

Everyone working there is top of their game when it comes to understanding the inner workings of the human body. Functional Patterning is a very scientific process so as to not embarrass myself trying to explain it, but to give anyone completely unaware of this concept a very primitive understanding Its a perfect blend of exercise and physical therapy that will help you on your journey to moving the way your body is meant to move, intentionally and pain free.

It’s not cheep so be ready to really commit time and effort into it.

I have had a wonderful experience at Functional Patterns Texas, working with practitioner Dennis Nel. Years ago, I was an NCAA All American tennis player whose career was cut short by injuries. I truly wish I had had access to FP at that time. I discovered Functional Patterns Texas after a recent tennis injury - a torn gluteus minimus - made it difficult and painful to walk. After two months of serious pain, I started working with Dennis. He had me out of pain within two weeks and back on the tennis court. It almost felt miraculous.
The philosophy here is very different from other workouts I've done over 5 decades of athletics. They believe there should be no pain, even during a tough workout. One stretches muscles without traditional stretching, but with myofascial release. There is a focus on strengthening auxiliary muscles that support the larger muscle groups and subsequently creates a more profound strength as the body moves. Infrared sauna after a workout reduces any lingering pain and promotes healing and relaxation. For a sport like tennis, which involves dynamic and complex movements while applying force, the Functional Patterns workout is uniquely helpful.
Dennis is a fabulous practitioner and cares deeply about his clients. The conversations we have during our workouts are just as important to me as the workouts themselves, as the psychological aspect is also key. The workouts are challenging and I often feel that I'm a complete beginner, even though I've been participating in sports since age 6. I understand now that this challenge is fundamental to the process and helps the body develop new supportive strength.
I am so grateful to Dennis and the Functional Patterns Texas team. Thank you!

FP Texas is one of my favorite places in Austin!

I have been training with Dennis Nel for a year and have learned so much from him. He makes sessions fun while pushing me and educating me on the mechanics of my body. My lower back pain and knee pain are gone and I am stronger than I have been in a long time. I travel a lot for work and it has been so helpful to understand how different parts of my body work together and what I can do to alleviate pain and discomfort in any situation.

All of the trainers are extremely knowledgable and truly care about you as an individual. The classes are great and I appreciate the rotation of them in conjunction with semi-private training to accommodate my schedule. FPTX has somehow mastered the art of hosting group fitness with training tailored to your specific challenges and goals.

I am also a huge fan of the PEMF mats, red lights, and sauna. All of the members are really friendly and the team has done a great job at building an FP community.

I have gone to many gyms and classes over the years and none have come close to FPTX. Before joining I was struggling to consistently get back to the gym. Now I look forward to going and can't wait to get to class when I come back from a trip. This is the best I have felt in a long time. I cannot recommend FPTX enough to people of all fitness levels!

“These are two different people,” my mom said when I showed her my “before” and “progress” photos.

I give my highest recommendation to Dennis Nel and FP ATX. Let me explain why…

About a year ago, I picked up tennis again after a 20-year hiatus. Tennis has been incredible for me in so many ways, but after a few months, the old pain started creeping back—one of the reasons I’d quit decades ago. This time, it was my shoulder and arm.

Almost 30 years ago, I’d suffered a major shoulder injury. Physical therapy, surgery, and more therapy followed, but nothing brought lasting relief. Eventually, the Egoscue method helped me enough to play college tennis again, but the pain always lingered in the background.

During a recent ladder match, I met an opponent who noticed my pain. We talked about everything we’d tried over the years. I’d gone back to doing my Egoscue exercises, but they just weren’t enough anymore. He introduced me to Functional Patterns (FP), and I decided to give it a try.

After an assessment, I started working with Dennis Nel, doing private training sessions three times a week. In addition, I committed to the homework he gave me. The exercises we do are never painful (in case you’re wondering). I’ve learned to feel and control parts of my body I never knew I could—my ribs, thoracic spine, and glutes.

After a few months of consistent work, I noticed changes. I felt taller, more balanced, and I was managing my post-tennis arm pain better. My muscles were working differently, too; walking up stairs would leave my glutes burning instead of my quads (as used to be the case).

“These are two different people.” My mom wasn’t the only one who noticed. A work colleague said the same thing when he saw my progress photos—he couldn’t believe it was both me. And he was kind enough to point out I'm balding. 😉

Encouraged, I kept going. With Dennis’s guidance, I’m learning to move with better biomechanics and control.

Now, I’m back on the court with my sights set on national competitions, and this dream is inching closer to reality. Just last week, I played multiple matches in a single day, entirely pain-free. My swing feels effortless yet more powerful, and my results are improving right along with it.

I’m even moving faster—there’s scientific evidence of that too.

Whether you’re looking to relieve pain or to improve your athleticism, I highly recommend reaching out to Dennis Nel at FP ATX. (Just don’t take my time slot!)

Going from the mainstream fitness industry to FP has produced more physical development in 4-5hrs per week in a year than the 10+hrs of weekly training I did over the span of two decades. Central to this have been my 1:1 sessions with Dennis Nel, under his skilful guidance I have been learned a game-changing level of control and engagement throughout my core, glutes and spine. Denis has structured our sessions to not only bring me up to speed with FP techniques and principles but to be able to correct my dysfunctions such as a mild scoliosis while tailoring each session to my needs on the day. I am excited to continue 1:1 sessions with Dennis at FP Texas because the return on investment has been far greater than anything I’ve experienced in the mainstream world of fitness and yoga.

Highly recommend FP Texas!!!!! I was thrilled to see FP had a local gym and that it had great reviews. It's what finally swayed me to start my journey after watching about the program on Instagram. I decided to check out their consultation to see if buying the online program would even be worth it. Could not believe the simple things I couldn't do and the few changes that were made in the first visit. Signed with FP Texas and was worth every penny. I did ten sessions with a trainer (Christian is awesome! Go see him!) and am currently using the information I learned with the online program. If I lived closer, I would try take more make more use of them and their facility but I will for sure be going in periodically to continue to improve. Don't waste your time wondering. Give them a call today and make time to get started with them at the very least!

Functional Patterns Texas. A life changing experience for me. This is a long review, but it has a lot of nuggets to really tell you what FP is like. Give it a read.

I spent 6 months after my herniated disc injury seeking the help of physical therapists, acupuncturists, chiropractors, and surgeons and I was losing all hope. I went in for an initial evaluation with Brandon. Having seen five different PT’s, I learned about 8 different dysfunctions in my gait and posture, with each PT individually pointing out only 1-2 issues. Not Brandon – he was able to identify all 8 dysfunctions in the first 10 minutes of meeting me. I took the leap of faith and began my training with Brandon.

After 2 months, I have achieved an 80%+ reduction in pain. I have learned a tremendous amount about proper biomechanics and about my own body. FP has changed the way I move forever. The exercises and training work.

What makes FP Texas stand out to me is not so much just that the modality works. That’s important. However, it’s the quality of the practitioners and the way this gym is run that complements a working modality and optimizes its effectiveness and efficiency for its clients.

The standard of excellence with the practitioners here is what separates FP from any competition:
-------------They have a deep desire to help and that’s demonstrated by their willingness to listen well. They really listen to you closely and intently, looking for a deep understanding of your condition and symptoms. The exercises and progression is all very intentional and grounded in logic.
-------------They do not take shortcuts, both in the exercises and as practitioners. There is a culture of not cutting any corners. They say it as it is, no sugar coating. I get called out on mistakes or incorrect tendencies all the time. That has helped me to improve quicker and understand right from wrong with maximum clarity.
-------------They are extremely professional – always on time, never a cancelation, reliable and operating at 100% focus and attention on you. They also perfectly blend professionalism with a friendly and personal touch. They find the right balance of progress, constructive criticism, and encouragement, all creating an atmosphere where you just want to succeed.

The sense of community at FP has been significant for me as I fight the mental battle of a debilitating injury. Constantly being surrounded by like-minded individuals who are working on health and wellness has given me a sense of community and has pushed me to work harder. You are not alone, and we’re all in this together as we make progress every day that we show up. A traditionally labeled “degenerative disease” like spinal disc issues by medical doctors sounds hopeless. Here, it is never addressed that way and approached with a much more positive take like “just get jacked and stacked” 😊.

Now, FP takes a lot of work too. It’s not a quick-fix solution. I see it more as an investment in your health and future. You get out what you put in. You need to take notes. You need to watch videos on repeat. You need to use a lot of brain power and fight body dysfunctions and tendencies. The work is in breaking out of those poor habits. But the practitioners are there the entire way to help you. They do it in an encouraging way and even help instill correct movements when your session has already ended. For example, as a lighthearted joke: “You are shrimping your body again, the girls aren't into that” or as I’m walking around the gym: “Hey! Drop your phone back on the floor and pick it up properly, this time with a hinge, let’s go!”

*******If you want to take your health to the next level, this is a no brainer. Just go for the initial evaluation and you will be blown away by the practitioners. I have recommended them to my friends and family already and I hope you read this and give FP a shot.

If you’re looking for the best gym in Austin, this is it. I highly recommend Functional Patterns Texas, whether you’re dealing with chronic pain, you want to prevent future injuries and chronic pain, or you want to improve your overall fitness. I am a Functional Medicine Dietitian and I originally reached out to the owners of Functional Patterns to partner with them, but quickly realized I needed to see them as a client too. I have had chronic neck pain for over eight years because of a whiplash injury. I was having flare ups every few weeks that were debilitating, and required dry needling and other intense therapies to make the pain manageable and allow me to function. Thanks to Functional Patterns Texas, I haven’t had a flareup in over five months. Functional Patterns has literally changed my life. I ran Division I track in college and thought I knew a lot about exercise, but Functional Patterns has completely changed the way I view exercise and proper body mechanics. The workouts have not only allowed me to get pain-free, but they’ve allowed me to get back to activities I love like cycling and playing volleyball without flare ups. As I’ve worked closely with their team I’ve been blown away by the integrity of the owners and the way they care for their clients. If you decide to try Functional Patterns Texas, I promise your investment and your commitment to the process will be well worth it!

Functional Patterns isn't just a training program—it's a game-changer for anyone looking to revolutionize their understanding of movement and bodily health. It’s more than just exercise; it’s about correcting dysfunctions and ensuring a pain-free future. Honestly, it feels like I’m aging in reverse!

The practitioners here are in a class of their own. They're deeply caring and incredibly skilled, and they focus on real, meaningful progress over superficial gains. They're genuinely excited about your breakthroughs, making the journey all the more rewarding.

Joining FP Texas has been the best decision for my health and well-being. A special thanks to Brandon, whose dedication and expertise have led to those significant deep structural changes that I have been needing. I'm incredibly grateful to be part of this supportive and forward-thinking community.

FP Texas is the way to go if you're looking for a transformative approach to fitness and health. Your future self will thank you!

I would recommend Functional Patterns and training at FP Texas to anyone...literally anyone. I've never had training be so uniquely tailored to my body with past injuries and imbalances in mind. I've worked with Brandon, Able, Jarrod, and Benjamin on the FPTX 1.0 and 2.0 course, and there isn't a better online/remote training system out there. I've done my one on ones with Benjamin, and his ability to push me to my limit, without going over it is unlike any other trainer I've had. I always leave a training session feeling better than when I walked in, most importantly with no pain or injury.

I have to express my supreme appreciation to FP Texas for putting on the Human Foundations Practitioner course this weekend. I recommend it to anyone that takes their body and training seriously. The FP team from Austin put on a first class training, teaching an expanded look at the fundamentals of Functional Patterns, Structural Assessments, Dynamic Ques for dysfunctions that present during the assessment, progression/regressions of dynamic movement based on individual need, and so much more. What I particularly grew from and was most impressed by is the level of thoughtfulness that went into putting the FP system together. Benjamin, Able, Jarrod, Brandon are master communicators and presented the material from their respective walks of life and translated it into a context I found easy to digest and apply in our many break out sessions. The constant reinforcement in practice, repetition, and diversity of interaction with everyone in the course really set this apart from any other course I’ve ever been a part of.

As an ex athlete, I struggled with chronic pain and needing to unlearn some bad habits picked up during years of bouncing between various fitness regimens ( weight lifting, kettlebells, HIIT, pilates). Functional Patterns has given me not only a plan to correct the imbalances and injuries that led to the chronic pain, but a plan to move forward into the next decade of life feeling fitter, stronger, and more confident in my ability. I adore my practitioner and feel like FP Texas somehow knew exactly who to pair me with to make my recovery successful and to propel me into my next fitness goals.

This review is long overdue. FP Texas, the team (Brandon, Jarrod, Ben, Kristie, and Katy), and the functional patterns method of reorganizing your body/muscles to be structurally integrated and move efficiently is the best thing I've done for my body in 40 years. I came from a swimming and endurance triathlon background and between two gnarly cycling accidents and a slipped disc (L4-L5, S-1) that resulted in sciatica and chronic pain in my right scap/trap/rhomboid, FP unlocked capacity in my body I had lost for nearly a decade. I'm still blown away to this day how much relief I got and how much more conscious I am about the mind body connection and muscle integration when I'm active or even sitting.

This is the type of programming I wish every child would learn at a young age and every aging parent would start ASAP as a preventative measure for injury and for bodily awareness. It's an incredible tool to correct and prevent the compounding of poor recruitment of muscle systems especially when our body adapts/compensates to injury by over relying on one muscle. From my slipped disc injury, I hadn't been able to recruit my left glute to it's true capacity in half a decade. FP completely changed that for me. The strength gains are also incredible.

Here's what you should know about Functional Patterns...
1. You should get 1:1 private sessions to properly get your biomechanics assessed and movement adjusted. Learning often means spending 5-20 minutes on one movement correctly, parsing the movement to subparts that requires recruitment of multiple muscle groups. It's not uncommon to spend 5 minutes doing 1 rep. This time is critical to get your body to build muscle memory, get the nervous system to connect the dots, and rewire your overall movement.

2. This requires A LOT of your mental presence. This isn't a fitness/wellness modality that says just do X exercise and you'll be better. You really have to be consciously present to activate muscle groups correctly and have body awareness when you're under extreme tension. I'd often leave mentally exhausted but on an endorphin high. (Side note: Shout out to Brandon for being so patient with me on day's my mental focus wasn't there and creating adaptations for my mental state.)

3. Patience: This won't transform you overnight. It takes consistent practice and intentionality. If you're going to give it a try, I'd say the minimum you should give it a go before considering stopping is 3-4 months.

4. Do the Classes too: They're great reinforcement of your 1:1 individual sessions. Also, there's a primary focus on technique ALWAYS vs other fitness systems where people prioritize max weight.

5. It's not cheap, but it's well worth it. It's the equivalent of spending good money on a pricey bed because you're spending 1/3 of your life in it. Same with movement. You're likely spending 2/3 of your life in some type of structural pose that requires good biomechanics (even if you're just sitting or standing)

Thanks to the FP Texas team! Shout out to Brandon for all your help and putting up with me!

My personal training experience with Jarred is unparalleled. He's a great listener and communicator. I've been training with him for 6+ months. I came in with various injuries from overworking in the fitness industry. I am almost pain free! I plan to continue my training to improve my movement patterns, and start taking group classes as well!

The team at FP Texas is great all around. My mother, who is in her 50s, reports an all around improvement in her quality of life. Diminished aches and pains are reported after every session and she is just getting started with FP. A special thanks to Benjamin Merworth for coaching her.

Abel was my assigned practitioner and I enjoyed her attention to detail in our private session. She was able to give me corrections and exercises to help me make the most of the group classes. The attention to detail provided with the group class reassured me that I was practicing the movements correctly, which in turn gave me the confidence to practice on my own. I would recommend anyone with a body to start training with functional patterns.

My experience with Brandon Mccain over at FP Texas has been nothing short of incredible. Initially I reached out to Brandon because I was having upper thoracic pain and an issue with SI joint related back pain (lumbar degeneration).

I have tried several different modalities and PT work before coming to Brandon to help me find a long term solution to my back and hip pain and nothing was consistently helping me.

After spending a few weeks with Brandon I was able to feel differences in my posture and muscular imbalances. Now, after 8 months, I am pain free and preparing to compete as a professional boxer!

Highly recommend seeking out Brandon to help you with your physical goals of being strong and pain free.

The FP Texas team will work with you and your specific needs differently than anyone else in the fitness/rehab/athletic performance/wellness industry. Their holistic approach to the body produces results I didn’t think were possible. I initially came in after tearing my meniscus and letting it heal (managed to avoid surgery). I’ve worked with Brandon for a year now, and I’m able to move pain free and better than I can almost ever remember. If you’re on the fence, book an assessment and see what they’re all about!

I joined the virtuell Online Classes for 2 Months during lockdown which got me back on track and helped me to integrate a daily, active and functional routine (I am from Europe, but the time difference was no problem because of morning and evening classes).

During the classes I’ve never felt overwhelmed or unchallenged, the variety of exercises was huge, even with very little equipment!
All 4 team members have a very good eye for detail and good quality of the movement execution (considering bad camera quality, angles etc.)
The structure of each session is well conceived and fun/ some jokes are always included ; P.

I’ve had the pleasure to train with Brandon virtually for a few Sessions and he was able to help me a lot with my dysfunctions. He is very experienced in analyzing the body, creative with exercises and overall a great teacher and a professional Trainer, I learned a lot!

I definitely recommend to train with Functional Patterns Texas! Whether Online Classes or 1:1 Training with a Practitioner.

Thank you guys 🙌🏼

Wow! Brandon, Benjamin, Able and Jarrod are legit wizards in the art of biomechanics. In an industry where people profit off making you feel good via placebo effect, it’s refreshing to see individuals who actually challenge you and your dysfunctions. They have a razor-sharp eye for spotting where your movement goes wrong, as well as keeping the vibe fun and interactive. I am truly thankful for their help and when I’m back in Texas, I’m definitely stopping by again.

Receiving guidance as to more correct posture, body positions and movement has shown me there is a possibility of healing and moving forward. I was lost as to which direction to move and how to train my body to get away from pain, and this gives a clear route. The instructors are knowledgeable and give excellent and necessary feedback. After trying many, many things to try and work my way out of pain - I stumbled upon something that shows me progress.

I decided to try Functional Patterns to address the pain in my lower back and hip. One month into this training and I have noticed significant improvement in my pain levels. I have also learned a considerable amount about biomechanics and where my pain originated from. By learning how to move functionally, I have gained a new appreciation and awareness of how my body moves and the habits I've picked up along the way that work against it. If you are tired of living in pain and want your body to work with you, instead of against you, then give FP Texas a try. You will not be dissapointed!

I found FP after I herniated a disc in my back and had the wake up call to "train intentionally and not habitually." It has been super helpful to be trained on FP by all the practitioners at Functional Patterns Texas. I have to do zoom classes as I do not live in Texas, but they have been awesome! I really appreciate the coaching through the movements and the balance of MFR and functional exercises. Today is the last day of my FND 1.0 class and I'm definitely signing up for FND 2.0! I'm feeling great and my chiro. even commented on how she loved how I was taking care of myself. This is exactly what I was looking for to really start progressing more on my FP journey! Great job FP Texas! Keep it up!

Would definitely recommend to anyone that wants to feel right!!

The Functional Patterns 1.0 virtual class has helped me realize exactly what myofacial release is and what is actually happening when you engage in it. Able and Jarrod are excellent instructors that take the time to explain what muscle groups we are isolating and why we are doing the different exercises. They also take time to answer everyone's questions. Great Experience!

This introductory class has been excellent and now I am looking forward to more in 2.0 I recommend 1.0 to anybody at any level. Plus the great thing about the virtual class is that it's recorded and you can go back and review it any time you want.

I've been following FP for 6 years now and even was certified Level 1 in 2015 by Naudi the creator of the FP System however I never had time to implement and practice. I've also been following FP Texas for the past 3 years and loved how they implemented a group class for such a detailed system. When they announced a FP 1.0 Fundamentals course, I signed up right away and will continue with them. They are all very kind people, excellent instructors and most of all patient. I highly recommend their courses! If you're tired of living in pain and want a system that will enable you to move intentionally into the future, look no further than FP and FP Texas. I have been a bodyworker for 11 years, Specializing in sports massage and myofascial release. I will say that this training has helped me more than massage and chiropractic combined. If you want to truly get in shape without hurting yourself and transform your posture into one that is conducive to being pain-free this is the way to go. It is a mind-body training and I felt extremely present and focused after a session. Definitely worth the investment.

I hurt my lower back while playing soccer and was in immense pain. I went to the chiropractor, did acupuncture, but nothing was helping to manage my pain. I went to functional patterns and saw immediate results. Not only did they help ease my lower back pain but they also helped me reach my fitness goals. I personally feel like a trainer at a regular gym just makes a plan and tells me to lift weights. However, Brandon at FP Texas is very good at telling you how to specifically correct your posture and the way you move while being active. This leads to overall fitness and long term healthy posture.

I started training with Ben in 2017, before the existence of Function Patterns Texas. The fact that I can now take unlimited group classes and have all the equipment I need in one place is amazing.

About Me: I had spent years doing sports, martial arts and weight lifting. After years of heavy training, my body became stiff and inflexible. Further, I was never able to actually improve my athleticism.

So I was looking for a way to increase my body awareness, offset the effects of sitting, fix my lower back pain, and ultimately be a better mover. As a life philosophy, I always found it important to maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of my movement. But the truth is, I never really knew HOW - I only found pieces of puzzle here and there. Functional Patterns was the only comprehensive training that was both accessible and effective in terms of rehabbing years of dysfunctional postures and movement patterns, so I could become a better mover.

Pros
* Cognitive and physical benefit - It's one of the more mentally and physically challenging types of training I've done.
* Increased range of motion, mobility and strength. Less pain.
* Body awareness - It'll completely change the way you think about your body. You'll learn to make the inner connections from one part of your body to another. (For instance, I had no idea I could fix my back pain by addressing tightness in my legs.)
* You'll learn a lot about MFR (myofascial release) and will be doing it a lot (think self-massage + stretching).
* Your FP coach will be able to tell you what areas of your body are causing mobility issues and how to address them with MFR.
* You'll regain feeling and control of areas in your body that you had previously lost.
* You'll learn how to release tensions in areas that are tight.
* You work on activating muscles that are weak from disuse
* You'll re-pattern your nervous system to move more efficiently and fix your dysfunctional ways of moving.
* If you do it right, you feel incredibly strong and powerful in your movements.

Cons
* The training can be very slow and methodical at times - and rightly so. But it's easy to get overwhelmed if you're coming in with a lack of knowledge of how the human body works (99% of people).
* Sometimes my trainer would tell me to do simple movements and when I couldn't do them, it would be very de-motivating.
* Progress may plateau beyond beginner gains, if you do not spend the time to self-educate and if you're not serious about correcting your own problems.
* You learn how most people's knowledge of training is completely wrong and misguided.
* You'll hear people speak jargon that doesn't make any sense to most people, and that can get confusing and complicated (again, self-education is key)
* Just like anything in life, you have to be open-minded to learn an entirely new thing. And when learning anything new, it takes time and repetition - most people aren't willing to put in the work. But if you are a grinder like me, then you will get more results here than any other discipline or type of training because you are learning to address the root causes of your pain and lack of mobility.
* Beyond correcting dysfunctions, if you can build a solid foundation with all your muscles completely integrated from the ground up, you will be able optimize your movements like you never thought possible (At least, that has been my experience).

5 stars - Because there's no other place like it!

I learned about Functional Patterns (FP) from a friend who trained with Nina years ago. I followed online initially and after a variety of exercise boot camps exacerbated my left knee, ankle, shoulder and low back pain, I scheduled a consultation with Brandon. Before I started FP, I was getting regular deep tissue massages, seeing a chiropractor, stretching morning, noon and night and even changed out my mattress twice and was still experiencing pain and discomfort. Within 1 month of 2x/week individual sessions with Brandon, my low back and shoulder pain was gone. He was also able to identify the cause of my knee and ankle pain and customize my sessions around correcting my posture and movement dysfunctions. I'm so thankful to be correcting the root causes of my pain and learning how to move and work out pain free. It's hard work - retraining the mind and body - but it's so worth it!

I suffer from lower back pain, sciatica, runners knee, shoulder tightness and pain in my scapula. I’ve been doing functional patterns for almost 2 months now and my lower back pain has improved significantly. I still have sciatica but I’m noticing small improvements on it. My scapula and shoulder are slowly getting better. My posture has improved, overall tightness in my muscles have also improved. I can see a light at the end of the tunnel with functional patterns. The workouts aren’t only physically challenging but cognitively too, you’ll feel your body and mind starting to connect after each session.

My FP personal training experience with Brandon and attending the classes has been awesome! While it will take me some time to switch my way of connecting with my body and exercise differently I already feel the impact on my structural patterns. I come from the practice of yoga and strength training but after a knee injury came to functional patterns to strengthen my knee and gait. Brandon is very patient with my learning and transitioning my mindset from the previous ways I used to exercise to feel strong and lean. I enjoy the vast knowledge he has about muscle groups etc and find myself working physically and intellectually to make the connections. I am excited to grow more with functional patterns and learn to exercise in ways that support my wellbeing and honor my body structures. Thanks Brandon and the FP Austin team for creating such a welcoming gym and space to continue to grow my strength!

Started going to Functional Patters Texas after seeing a couple different doctors for knee pain while running distance and after soccer games. I realized that I had created some serious muscle imbalance from years of bad form and sitting a computer for work.

After a couple one on one sessions with Jarrod, I started to feel my glutes and abductors firing correctly, and my core and posture improving.

The other half is learning how to self massage (myofacial release) and how to control breathing to improve posture and performance. i enjoy the group classes as nice mix up to my other work outs. Super happy with the progress.
