As a guy with basic workout needs and a gym that's pretty much close to this Central area it's in, couldn't ask for more! They've got a ton of equipment, many duplicate stations so you're not waiting for one person to finish. Great relaxed environment, good music. Enough variety between every type of resistant training, CrossFit area, cardio. For basic high quality gym, this Golds is great!!

Perfectly fine gym for $30-$35 a month. Machines are older but 90% of them are working fine. If you can’t get a good workout in here that’s a you problem. Some of these reviews are people being extremely over dramatic.

Most of the gyms in the area have worse hours and cost 2-3x more, minimum. Not the best golds in the Austin area and I’d honestly happily pay $50/mo for newer equipment. But whatever. Serves its purpose.

Great location but the equipment is old and not well maintained. Thanks for serving your purpose but you will get more value from one of the many new gyms in the area.. I'm also talking about the golds on 35 and William cannon

this gym has free weights and tons of machine and cables
new machines and old machines
a lot of space for individual work
everyone minds their business
only one guy shadow boxing
it could be cleaner but it’s a non issue if you clean before and after yourself
if you new to austin i recommend this gym

Gym is a real value. employees aren't miserable like other gyms and whoever is running the place knows how to run this type of brand; needs to be promoted to train all the GMs nationwide if Gold's Brand wanted to capitalize on re strengthening their Brand again; which in my opinion has dropped but not here

These guys care , GM all the way down , this isn't Lifetime fitness rates or Planet fitness rulebook or YMCA zero energy, bottom line is for 30 bucks a month you get to hear some music to keep energy high minute you walk in, I listen to my tracks in my earbuds but like to hear that they have the balls to play something loud enough to keep whole place vibing, people here come to workout for the vast selection of machines, free weight, barbell contraptions, last neck machine in town, cardio classes I noticed are popular, and these facility is how the Golds brand was started for those harder core gym lovers who love the culture, this outkicks the other newer locations and it's not even close, the brand should consider getting larger buildings like this in older commercial centers in perfect world , regardless I hope their lease is locked up bc I'll recommend and go here for however long I'm in Austin and side note I read review about water fountain and not cleaning , that is not true, I have seen one of the higher ups wiping down every machine top to bottom, they installed brand new cold strong water fountains recently and even the dressing rooms are clean and shower curtains been replaced, they all need a damn raise for 30 bucks and indoor track and cardio cinema, people who complain are nuts

Poorly maintained and rarely cleaned

I wish I had something positive to say about this gym but I really don't.

Immediately upon entering at 6 in the morning, it just smells awful. The locker room is dirty. Nothing is cleaned or maintained. Treadmills are all in various states of disrepair. The only cleaning I've ever seen happen is exclusively done by members. As all the previous reviews mentioned, equipment is tagged out and much of what isn't tagged out isn't actually fully functional, just not dangerous

The worst is the showers. There is almost no water pressure, feels like taking a shower in a water fountain. There are no shelves to put your personal shower products. They are using residential shower fixtures for commercial use, which are all damaged and you never know if you're turning the water hotter or colder. This is a picture of the shower curtain today. It looked this nasty on Tuesday and I gave them 2 days to clean and today, it was just as disgusting. I've never seen anyone in the locker room cleaning and I've been coming here for a year now. Also, please turn off the TVs in the locker room, the volume is too loud and literally no one wants them on.

This would be the perfect gym if the water situation was fixed. Barely any water comes out of the main water fountain near locker rooms. It's 2024, PLEASE install a filtered water bottle refill station.

Most recent update: one of the squat racks has been out of commission for almost a month. This gym sucks. Go somewhere else.

Update: went from 4 stars to 2 stars after a year of still unusable wifi, and adding onto that: SUPER loud music and equipment that never gets fixed. I still feel the same way about squat racks. They’re the only reason I still go here, 90% of the time there’s at least 1/5 available.

It’s a good commercial gym. Internet connectivity, like the other user posted, is terrible so definitely have music downloaded on your phone. Good range of equipment and plenty of squat racks and space to deadlift. The gym is clean enough, especially for a gold’s. Peak times get a little crazy, but I usually go around lunch hours and never have to wait for equipment. Four stars just for internet connectivity issues.

You can always tell when the employees don't utilize the gym they're working at, because it ends up looking like this place. Like no one gives a crap about it and they already have my money so I need to make due with what I've bought.
It's a garbage pile of rusty gym equipment and bad etiquette. They don't seem to know what preventative maintenence is. Something is always broken, and their selection of cable attachments is dismal at best. I'd be embarrassed if I owned this gym.

Friendly staff, solid equipment.

Honestly would be a 5-star gym if they would just turn down the music like others have mentioned in the reviews…

They blast music from the speakers so if you want to enjoy your own music or podcast like 95% of people at gold’s, it’s not ideal…

During the day the employees are so nice and helpful ! But the evening shift is just a bunch of young guys that don’t really care. I had a question about my membership and adding someone new but for the past 2 hours a guy in a muscle shirt looking real lost has been sitting on their counter. Idk if he is a worker or maybe just there to talk to the employees. I looked the guy in the eyes twice asking for help and he just ignored me. Very un professional. The other young guy tried to help me but he spoke so low and was actually no help at all.
Really disappointed :/

I love this gym so hard, y'all!
ZERO high pressure sales, you either wanna join or ya freakin' don't...this is definitely not a place where you'll be put into someone's office for an hour after they gave a "free" day pass.
It's not the fanciest place, no juice bar or (IMO) useless crap like that. Staff is wonderful!
One thing I love about this place is the way it is set up with regards to machines/free weights etc.
I've belonged to plenty of gyms and worked at a Bally's in the 90s so I'm pretty critical about space layout and this Gold's is a gem (pun intended).
The machine area is set up as a nucleus in the center surrounded by a walking track and several unique cardio/weight areas on the other side.
Feel like playing crossfit? There's an area for that. Wanna just knock it out with some free weights/kettlebells, TRX and benches with no one else there? There's a space for that!
Wanna prentend you're Jane Fonda and work out in an aerobic room? Done, son!
My point, there's a million places to lift here, never ever crowded.

I also really like the crowd! Don't get me wrong, these are attractive peeps but significantly less spray tans and leering than other gyms. Like hot, aging, hipster dads that don't have time to peacock at the gym but have a background in lifting. I also see a ton of real women lifting REAL weight, limited cardio bunnies or Lululemon. There's also a decent amount of seniors mid-day trying to get their mobility back and just want to high five them!

It seems largely underutilized but I actually love the cardio cinema there. Feel like getting some steps in and watching Harry Potter? This is the place. I'm guessing they use to do this but stopped due to limited interest but I really wish they would do thematic movie nights or post a movie schedule. I'd 100% show up to watch an 8pm showing of whatever 2000s movie they have and get some steps in. Hit me up, fam, I'll organize.
I'd also be over the moon to watch music videos streamed there.

If I had any criticism, I wish there was maybe one more smith machine. I also wish they'd add a few more rowing machines/spin bikes to the cinema cardio room and maybe an area to stretch with mats. I'd also be thrilled if they always turned the subtitles on some I can watch Twilight while I listen to W.A.P.

Please join this gym because if they close, I'm gonna break something!

Probably the worst run gym I’ve ever been to. I am not exaggerating when I say these pics were all taken on the same day. I ended up walking around seeing how many out of order signs I could find like it was an Easter egg hunt. You can probably still go in there and the out of order signs will all still be there, no matter what date you are reading this. The WiFi is unusable. The sauna is broken half the time, the refuse to fix anything. Been here for a year and a half and I think it’s finally time to switch. I have asked them many times to fix stuff and this is where we are at now. I went to LA fitness down the road and it’s 10x better so now I will try to bring as many people from golds to LA with me before I cancel my membership out of spite. They either don’t have a manager or they are wildly overpaid because they are never there. Sauna is always broken and is never even very hot anymore, they never fix equipment when it breaks, hours could be better. One thing I will say though is that personal trainer Daniel is dope. They should give him a raise, because he is the only good thing about this place. Don’t go to this gym (unless you want a personal training session with Daniel).

MUSIC IS WAY TOO LOUD!! TREADMILLS POORLY CARED FOR. WiFi so unusable even manager acknowledged it was useless. RANDOM BILLS & AUTOPAY ERRORS that front desk couldn’t explain with most front desk employees struggling and clueless on how to use their own software. Canceling membership was a mess.

This is the 4th gym I’ve been to in Austin and I’ve never experienced a gym with music this loud, unless you have noise canceling earbuds good luck trying to hear your own music, you’ll still hear their music even when yours is on max volume. (UPDATE I BOUGHT $300 NOISE CANCELING EARBUDS AND STILL HEAR THE MUSIC OVER MINE.)

For the same price of $35-40, I’d recommend the LA Fitness down the road. If you’re looking for something cheaper with even more amenities go to 24 hour fitness for only $17 a month. Above all, Fitness Connection is the best for the variety of equipment and only costing $10 a month but sadly they only have North Locations. I do not recommend Golds, they do not have enough benches, you won’t get one during peak hours. The saunas also do not get hot enough (CURRENTLY BROKEN). The internet in the gym almost never works and there is practically zero service in there. Really disappointed for how much I pay for this place.

Update: Yall need to look around and see 90% of people have their own music in and couldn’t care less about y’all’s ‘environment’ or whatever, no 👏🏻 one 👏🏻 cares 👏🏻 about 👏🏻y’all’s 👏🏻music, please turn it down to where at least ANC earbuds will work.

Update #2: Billing issues. After changing method of payment, autopay stopped working. I was charged several times on random occasions that even the manager struggled to explain why. They are unable to pull up billing information with ease at front desk. No one seemed to know how to fully use the front desk operation software. It is obvious that this gym has a very high turnover rate for staff, every month it seems like they have someone quit and a new hire begin. They were unable to provide a list of each transaction and exactly what dates, some transactions were completely missing on their end. In addition, canceling with them is a mess. You have to cancel 30 days before you get billed, or they will charge you for one extra month. This is the only gym I’ve ever experienced continuing billing 30 days post cancellation. One staff member struggled to explain this policy.

I’m extremely disappointed with the treatment I’ve received at Gold’s Gym. As a paying member, I expected to feel valued, but instead, I feel overlooked and underappreciated. The staff seemed indifferent to my concerns, and it’s clear that customer satisfaction isn’t a priority here. For a brand with such a strong reputation, I anticipated better service and a more welcoming atmosphere. Unfortunately, this experience has left me questioning whether I’ll continue my membership. I hope Gold’s Gym takes steps to prioritize their members and create a more welcoming place

Went to sign up for a membership and someone named IVAN was at the front desk. He was incredibly rude to me and told me I would have to wait for 30 minutes because his manager is on lunch? I was requesting a family add-on. I brought all of the documentation showing i live at the same address as my partner and he stood there in silence refusing to help us until his manager was back from lunch. Then told us to drive to the Bee Cave location if we want it done faster. UNBELIEVABLE. To add to this: we were being extremely nice until the last second. We were standing waiting there in absolute silence while he was on his phone when he rudely said “do you wanna move so people can scan in?”. As someone who works in the customer service industry, this is absolutely unreal and I have never experienced this kind of service in my life. Time was 4pm EST on November 8

I chose Gold's Gym because of the many locations, which is convenient for me as my job requires traveling all over town. While this isn’t my usual gym, I visited this location yesterday due to a nearby appointment. Unfortunately, I was disappointed by the condition of this gym. It’s clear the facility and equipment are in serious need of upgrades. Many machines, especially those for leg workouts, seemed outdated and poorly maintained—some hadn’t been serviced or oiled in a while, which affected my workout. Based on this experience, I wouldn't recommend this gym.

★ 1

** I have not been paid or compensated for any reviews I post. All reviews are written with what I see and experience. **

Dear Austin community,
This review is for Gold’s Gym Ben White location. My initial impressions when I walked up to the building were reminiscent of an old department store. The outside of the building looks like it hasn’t been washed in years. The signage is dull and unimpressive.
Walking in, you are greeted by some of the friendliest employees that always have a smile on their face. They truly seem to love chatting with customers about their day.
The inside of the gym, at first glance, is decent. It’s quite large for a gym and there seems to be plenty of equipment to use for whatever your goals. Walking around, you see 10+ machines (cardio, weight, etc..) that are broken and not usable. Many of these have been this way for 3+ months now. Many customers have tried contacting local management about this with no replies which makes this reviewer wonder if management even cares. It doesn’t seem so. Going around the gym to inspect each machine is full of disappointment. Rust, cracks, disrepair of many things in this gym. One should be glad gyms aren’t inspected by the health department or this location would shut down immediately. Cleaning supplies like paper towels and disinfectant are a gamble as to whether or not you will have them for the day.
The locker rooms are not much better than the rest of the gym. The sauna is constantly broken, it looks as if it hasn’t been cleaned in over a year, and wooden boards are broken. You can feel the bacteria in the air. Which makes you wonder how often the showers and toilets are cleaned (rather seldom from the looks of things).
The music being played over the loud speaker is extremely loud and obnoxious. If you can hear it over your own headphones, it’s time to turn it down or off. Customers like to listen to their own music and not be interrupted by whatever they decide to blare that day.
Overall this business gets a D- when compared to the other Gold’s gyms in the area. But I hope things do get better here and wish management the best of luck in turning it around.

Update 8/8/2024 - The men's sauna still has not been cleaned and machines are all still broken.

Update 8/16/2024 - They have a bad habit of not opening up in the mornings and today was no exception. Machines are still broken. Place is still not cleaned or stocked. Attempts to reach out to management has been unsuccessful.

Update 10/20/2024 - Since bringing these issues to management’s attention, nothing has been done. The sauna hasn’t been cleaned, most of the same machines are still not working and the music is still deafening. It’s a wonder this place hasn’t been shut down yet. They should count themselves lucky they don’t have to follow Texas health code.

I don’t know who these rude staff members are, I never ran into them. Everyone is nice to me.

The music is awful. Pleas stop playing it and please turn it down. Others are right. The volume is just obnoxious.

This is the only golds in the area with 3 sets 3 different brands of leg machines. All other gyms got rid of the “white” machines. Please hang onto them and keep fixing them.

There is a lot of equipment some of which dating back to 1990s on the gym floor. It’s not a bad thing as long as you keep them up. I never ran into a machine I needed that was broken.

Wm cannon mopac location, my previous favorite, got all new equipment and bless their hearts the new machines are awful. I can’t get into them I can’t get out of them and they don’t have dampeners so they hurt my joints at the top and bottom of movements. Please please don’t get that equipment brand for this gym. Stick to cybex, hammer strength, life fitness equipment.

This gym could be kept up better, it could be a smidge cleaner, it could have water fountains that don’t spew stinky water or at least sell bottled water. It could it could it could. But none of these are deal breakers for me yet.

I am camping here for now because no one bothers me at this gym. I get my workout done with no interruptions. The crowd seems mostly harmless. Definitely less crowded than wm cannon and mopac location. The amateurs don’t interrupt the serious folk like they do at wm cannon mopac location. So I appreciate working quietly on my own.

Common for openers to be 20-30 minutes late for opening. Find a different golds if you’re trying to work out before the work day.

There are only 2 things I find very annoying at this place. Seems like almost everyday (around 8a.m.), there is someone with there tripod, video taping their workouts with no regard to the people around them. On Friday, 2/22/23, there were 2 individuals with their tripods recording. Very rude and annoying. I wish that management or front desk would do something about this. The second is that sometimes the music is so loud at 7a.m. that I can't even hear my airpods because of the loud music. The gym has a gym rule sign on the wall but management does not enforce it. Per management, "it is important to strike a balance between allowing members to document their fitness journeys and maintaining a respectful and non disruptive gym environment for others." Why bother having a rules sign (no video taping), if management does not enforce it.

Visited two days ago, looked around by myself, equipment looks great, got pricing info, left. Yesterday morning, I signed up online for a free day pass so I could come in, try it out, then sign up for a membership. I was even getting text messages when I signed up for the free day pass, that they would be expecting me when I arrive.

Greeted by a really dense and defensive front desk person named Briana, who kept saying that I was not qualified for free day pass because I’ve already worked out there. I said that’s not possible, and she said “You said you were here yesterday though.” I had to explain multiple times that I came in yesterday, just looked around and left, but she was certain that I must’ve worked out because I was in the system. “The computer says you worked out here yesterday” and when I said that’s not possible unless they’re tracking me without consent, she continue to question me about yesterday’s visit. “You didn’t sign anything?” No I didn’t. “You must’ve scanned the QR code right?” When I said, no again, she took the sign with the QR code, spun it around and asked me again, “You didn’t scan this?”I even showed her the text I got one when I signed up for the free day pass this morning and she ignored it and said that’s not actually a person who’s texting me.

I started to lose my patience because I was trying to sign up and she could not get over her own ego. When I pointed it out to her that if she wanted to figure out why I had an account, all she had to do was ask if I signed up for anything online at Gold‘s gym, which I did. For a free day pass before I was going to sign up for a membership.

What a big waste of time, her explaining again and again and again why she was questioning me as she did, with her constantly interrupting me, telling me that I’m not letting her finish, and in general giving me one of the worst customer experiences I’ve ever had. No volunteered apology, just tons of defensiveness.

I was so angry, I left, drove to the closest gym, LA Fitness, worked out there for free and signed up for their membership that day.

Gold Gym, work on your front desk. Maybe you’ll sign up more people that way. Briana, you need better customer training.

One of my fav golds in town. I prefer a grungy gym over a pretty new one though! If you want weights that have a resume, this is the golds for you.

This is a great gym, facility is nice, it’s never overwhelmingly busy, and the staff is always friendly.
The equipment variety is nice, and all of the other members seem friendly, but don’t interact much with you.
It’s everything I could ask for in a gym.

UPDATE: The internet issues continue to plague this gym. As my original review states, you’ll find the internet connectivity is reliable near the front desk. My word of advice: download your music playlists before you get here to workout. Still keeping 1 star rating.

Also, I’ve noticed blue tape on one of the mirrors near the squat racks that has been there for weeks because one of the mirrors cracked. At this rate, I’m starting to think that will be a permanent new “decoration”, because I’ve seen no signs that it’s being attended to by maintenance staff or outside contractors.

Some equipment also is difficult to adjust due to, what I presume is, rust or aging hinges. One example: The Eagle(?) chest fly / rear delt combo machine’s seat little yellow rod for the seat is so difficult to pull out without some force. The gym management should at least take a clipboard and note the state of each machine in the central area to see if things are degrading or missing weight labels / something else.

And lastly: while the gym manager, Mychal, did respond to my review, he never reached out to me on the phone.

I do want to state that it’s not all doom-and-gloom with this gym: it’s perfectly fine if you want to go, get a workout in, and leave. The front desk, despite what others may say, are friendly and helpful.

ORIGINAL REVIEW: My 1-star rating is not due to equipment variety or the gym as a whole, but it’s due to issues with this gym’s top-level managers. This Gold’s Gym seems to consistently cycle through general managers like they’re seasonal workers. One month, you’ll have one general manager, the next, it’s someone different.

Regardless, the one pattern I’ve experienced time and time again is that the gym’s general managers (not the assistant-level management) will NEVER respond to your email inquiries. EVER. They’re remarkably absent from everything.

The other issue: I’ve repeatedly asked the front desk if the internet connectivity issues in this gym will be addressed. It has been almost a year since I first brought this up to their attention, and the internet is as garbage as the day I asked. You will not have a reliable internet connection near the dumbbell area. At best, maybe near the front desk is where it’s most reliable, and even there, it’s shoddy. Upgrading your internet equipment shouldn’t be such an inconvenience—LA Fitness across the road has reliably great internet everywhere in their facilities, so this lack of want to fix this issue is most definitely a deliberate choice borne of pure laziness. It’s been close to a year already, c’mon.

If the current GM of this gym is reading this, please don’t reply to my review with needing to “disconnect and reconnect to the gym WiFi network and agree to the terms” nonsense. Just get your ISP to come in to fix and upgrade the internet service in the gym, please.

If the issues I brought up are addressed and fixed, then I’ll readjust my rating up accordingly.

Repair was executed 9/23 AC works!
I have been waiting since last May 2023 to work out in the movie room. AC has been broken since then. It is now still broken and it is just a few days till August starts. Every time I ask at the desk they say it’s going to happen in a few days, but it never does. This sucks.

I don't have anything positive to say about this location. Management is severely underwhelming and honestly rude. If you're a morning work out type of person like me, don't go to this gym. It will never be ready by opening. The cleaner for this shift never starts on time nor does he clean.

Additionally most of the equipment is breaking down at a concerning rate. The manager will blame it on lack of staff, which they are responsible for.

This gym is a waste of money, you'd have a better experience at Planet Fitness.

I’ve been to all the Golds in town and this location has the best layout and equipment. Some of the equipment needs to be replaced, but usually they will tend to it fairly quickly. There is generally a good friendliness to the staff, but some look like they can’t be bothered. Other than that it beats out a lot of places in town especially at the price point.

Total dump. They have a running track but there is no official direction so people are constantly walking/running the opposite direction from each other, walking across the track, leaving weights on the floor of the track. I asked which direction was the "right" direction and front desk didn't know. I asked how many laps for a mile and the front desk didn't know. Smells horrible like b.o. The stationary bike I wanted to use was broken. This place was nice 8 years ago, but now it's a total dump.

If you are a women, do NOT join here. Especially if you like to go to the gym to workout in peace. After a while, you’ll start to notice certain male employees are creepy and will begin to make you uncomfortable with their constant attempts at unnecessary conversation as you are simply trying to just scan in and begin your workout. It seems like the manager is not a very good judge of character because they hire such creepy front desk workers and don’t see a problem with how much these men bother the women at this gym. Lately, every time I walked into the gym I felt like a I was walking up to the front desk at a used car lot. I can’t emphasize enough just how extremely unprofessional, inappropriately “friendly”, and annoying certain employees are here. They just can’t seem to control themselves around women. Over the past few months, the front desk workers have made me feel so uncomfortable that I started to dread going to the gym. I cancelled my membership here and already found another gym nearby that is 100 times better. Ladies, take your business elsewhere.

I had a membership here for a while before the pandemic hit and enjoyed the layout and running cinema. Once the pandemic hit, we were told that our plans would be frozen for six months so that we wouldn't be charged for the months they were closed. I knew my plan was supposed to renew during this six months so I replied to their email update with the request to cancel my membership instead. I received an email back saying that I would have to cancel in person.....while all locations were closed. Ended up paying for extra months until I could go in person to cancel.

Am new to town and signed up for a month to month membership, $30 was a good deal and they have great equipment. I found a different gym closer to me and canceled my membership at Golds. What I didn’t know, is that you’ll get charged an additional 30 days regardless of when you cancel. I’m surprised this is legal, but it’s probably somewhere in the fine print. Quite hilarious that customers are treated that way. Never getting a membership at any location ever again.
