So apparently, having a Gold’s Gym membership doesn’t actually mean you can use all Gold’s Gyms.
I learned that the hard way when I tried to work out at the Gold’s Gym located at UT Health Science Center in San Antonio, right next to the Audie Murphy VA Hospital — and was turned away.

Now tell me, what’s the point of paying for a national membership if the brand doesn’t stand by its own name? Veterans, healthcare workers, and students are all over that area, and you’d think a gym built next to a medical center and VA hospital would welcome people trying to stay healthy.

Maybe it’s time Gold’s Gym clarified what their “membership” really means — or renamed it Gold’s Gym (some locations only).

Great gym if you can actually get in. Parking is limited. Very limited.

Edit: I would recommend to management that they create maps on signs or flyers available in the gym showing how to get in to these parking alternatives through hospital barriers. It is not easy to find even with verbal instruction.

I am absolutely thrilled to share my incredible experience at Gold's Gym San Antonio Medical Center! From the moment I walked through the doors, I was greeted by the manager, Monica, with a warm and welcoming atmosphere that made me feel right at home.

The staff at Gold's Gym San Antonio Medical Center—especially Lester—are truly the heart of the gym. Every single person I interacted with was friendly, knowledgeable, and went above and beyond to ensure that I had an exceptional experience. From the front desk staff to the personal trainers, everyone was eager to help and offer guidance. The sense of community and camaraderie among the members is palpable, and it's clear that the staff genuinely care about each and every person who walks through the door.

But what really sets Gold's Gym San Antonio Medical Center apart is the incredible selection of equipment and facilities. The gym is spacious and well-maintained, with a vast array of cardio machines, free weights, and strength-training equipment. Whether you're a seasoned athlete or just starting out, there's something for everyone at Gold's Gym. I was particularly impressed with the variety of group fitness classes offered, from yoga and Pilates to spinning and kickboxing. The classes are always well-attended and led by experienced instructors who are passionate about helping you achieve your fitness goals.

The layout of the gym is also incredibly well-designed. The equipment is spaced out in a way that makes it easy to move around and find what you need, and the locker rooms are clean and well-appointed. The gym also offers a relaxing atmosphere, with comfortable seating areas and a peaceful ambiance that makes it easy to unwind after a workout.

Some people will complain about outdated equipment, but this location is slowly updating the oldest equipment. I have no concerns.

This location is unique in that it has a track that connects to the larger jogging trail around the medical center. There are also soccer fields, softball fields, and a tennis court. Although I have never tried it, there is an outdoor swimming pool.

Overall, I am thoroughly impressed with Gold's Gym San Antonio Medical Center and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a supportive and motivating fitness community. The friendly staff, plentiful equipment, and nice layout make it the perfect place to achieve your fitness goals and feel your best.

For the most part i’ve absolutely loved the gym! The machines are on the simpler side and there’s not too many, but the gym isn’t made for a large capacity of members (at a time) anyways so I don’t feel as though that matters much. It’s never crowded (which is a huge plus)
There’s plenty of amenities, like the sauna, pool, sleep rooms, basketball court (for whoever’s into that lol)
Everyone for the most part is polite and cordial, and i’ve never ever had a single issue with any of the staff, they’ve always been super polite, friendly, and helpful.
The locker rooms/restrooms are also pretty clean, i’ve never felt there was an issue with hygiene or cleanliness outside of a few incidents I observed from members (as people can be), but nothing that can be held against the staff!

My singular issue is just the parking, just earlier today I spent 15 minutes waiting, took the long way around and was told I couldn’t stay in UT parking without a permit (even though it was after 3), and waited in front of the Gold’s for another 15-20+ minutes. I gave up and left after a total of maybe 30-45 minutes just trying to get into the gym.

Parking is limited with maybe 15-18 spots maxxxxx, and if you’re like me and we don’t like risking a ticket or towing, the other parking area isn’t exactly reliable. It’s been maybe 3/4 times now that i’ve waited over 20 minutes for a spot, and after that I ended up just giving up and going home after wasting all that gas waiting.

all in all:
- staff support is 100% great, never had an issue.
- cleanliness/hygiene from the professional end of Gold’s Gym is also like 100%
- even 98% of the fellow members are super considerate, clean, and polite. only observed a couple of incidents that made me question humanity lol. but that’s just people people-ing anyway.

the only issue is really just the parking.
for paying like $50/55 or whatever a month, it’s definitely the only thing that makes me think twice. not sure if there’s just people who aren’t gym-goers parked there, or if it’s really just not a super functional space, but there has to be some like actual, official, physical permit or something 😭 just to make sure everyone who’s there is supposed to be, and to properly give access to the “other” parking without concern.

and additionally, I do wish there were extended hours. It’s not a complaint, and obviously I understand that people want to go home, but it would be nice 😭 I work 9am-10.30pm 4-5 days a week so it does definitely cut into my gym availability. So when in my only available times I can’t get in due to parking it can be suuuuper frustrating.

It’s a great overall gym facility and everyone that works there are outstanding. I just wish that they open earlier. Before the pandemic, it used to be a 24/7 hour gym. It makes sense; a lot of their customers work in the Medical area and work unusual hours. I just can’t believe they didn’t stick to that schedule I am sure they are losing customers due to this fact.

This facility is on the campus of UTHealth Science Center, San Antonio! It’s extremely convenient for students who are going to the university. the facilities are quite accommodating! They have nap pods, a lot of lockers with locks as well as some where you can use your own. Their showers are fully stocked with soaps! And you can grab as many towels as you want from the front! I don’t think I’ve ever seen them run out of towels. They have a basketball court, pool, steam room, and a sauna. I really enjoy their classes that they offer there. The only downside is the large influx of patrons in the gym. Since it’s so convenient for a lot of students, it tends to be crowded when students get off class.

Manager badgering member about talking to other members
While pulling into the parking lot, another member was blocking the way for other cars to enter. After I was able to park, I then walked up and told the other member to stop blocking the way and to leave if they plan on leaving. The member then complained and I was badgered by the manager and was told I am not allowed to talk to other members. I told the manager I am an adult and I am allowed to speak to whom ever I want. She then took it upon herself to hold my membership, that I was trying to upgrade, hostage and would not let me upgrade. I then told them to cancel my account and left and that I would not be treated in this manner.

I would appreciate something be done regarding this manager going on a power trip and using her status within the gym as leverage to bully members.

★ 1

First, this location does not warrant the highest level membership for Gold’s. Previous posters have listed issues with equipment, parking space, etc. They have all the amenities to justify the rate but it is all cramped into a small space and poorly done. Considering Lifetime is a comparable in price, the difference in quality is night and day.

Apart from the location itself Gold’s also likes to practice “gotcha” business tactics. They market the membership as month to month, but fail to inform you that 30 day cancellation is required, and they will continue to charge you even if no payment is made.

This is in the written agreement but was not discussed when signing up. Considering how most month-to-month contracts these days operate like Netflix, (your subscription stops after non-payment), this is clearly predatory business tactics. It’s disingenuous marketing they might as well sign you up for a 12 month contract.

Read the fine print and buyer beware, but I would recommend taking your money elsewhere.

Seemed like a nice gym but when I inquired about cost of membership instead of a price I kept being told it was expensive. I had a golds membership at another location but wanted to switch to this location cause it's next to the VA and has different amenities. Anyway I didn't inquire any further and canceled my family's membership with Golds altogether at the location we were at.

55$ a month and 40$ a month if you’re a resident. Would be an ok deal if they weren’t so strict with their visitor policy. I want to be able to bring my wife with me once a week or every other, but I can’t here. Additionally, it’s not 24/7 even though it used to be. Value is not quite there so for now I’ll just stick to my gym at my apartment complex

This gym has everything despite the small scale. The clients are cleanly and respect the rules.
The Hoist machines here are better than the typical Hammer Strength garbage plaguing most gyms.
Wish the dumbbells were heavier than 125lb and some of the machines were better lubricated.

★ 2

None of the equipment is bolted to the floor, parking is AWFUL (there’s only like 16 spots), the choice in machines is quite poor and they’re also very poorly spaced apart. I jabbed my kidney and dropped a 45 pound plate on my ankle today because the hack squat machine is less than a foot from the leg press machine and there’s zero space to maneuver. My ankle is pretty badly injured, honestly. The cafe has been closed since COVID and it’s just a massive waste of potential space. And they have dedicated WAY too much space to cardio machines.

Honestly the only good thing about this place is the sauna/steam room and the beautiful outdoor track area. That being said… the track is made from asphalt and not rubber. 🤣 Once you’re inside, the place feels soulless.

The equipment is well maintained, staff are friendly and helpful, and the exercise facilities overall are clean. I enjoy coming to this location because I do not encounter people trying to set up make-shift film recording sessions in an effort to be the next IG fitness influencer. There is a good array of free weights, cables, and machines. My only suggestion to the facility is to update the carpets in the men's locker room and to address old corrosion on plumbing fixtures, sinks and improve air flow so that perpetual use of a floor fan isn't required. Other than that, it's been a great place to exercise.

Decent gym. I will say it can definitely use better parking accommodations (there are maybe a total of 20 spots? Maybe?). But, the customer service is where it's really lacking. The front desk people are a huge hit and miss, there are a few nice and friendly people, then we have Elsa Villanueva who is ironically a "member's experience manager" apparently. Talk about a bad fit for a job. This is one of the most unfriendly, rude, and unprofessional people I have ever come across, and I've worked at a DMV! I legitimately do not understand how people like her stay hired in places and much less move up in the ranks to very ironic positions (yes, lets put the most unfriendly person as the face of our customer experience team). Thankfully, we don't see her too much, but whenever she does come out to the front you can expect to be either ignored, talked down to, accused of something, or be given a cold shoulder at best. She also almost never wears a name badge and if she is tasked with manning the front desk you can usually find her off to the side watching TV or messing with her phone, if you want to buy something you will feel like you're disturbing her peace and she will give you some mean looks for it.

I used to come to this gym for a while right before Covid happened however I immediately switched to a different Golds.
Pros: Very nice locker room, especially after they had replaced the carpet.
Cons: Already? Yeah, there aren't many pros anymore. Hours, hours of operation are a joke. No longer 24/7 once places were allowed to reopen after covid restrictions lifted. Because it's owned by UHSC and not like the other Golds, I can't use my pass here and need to have my own membership to this one. The wet sauna, smells like feet and has never been cleaned to get rid of that smell. The dry sauna, doesn't even get hot enough. Barely gets to 100 degrees. Not enough weight lifting machines. Lighting is bad, florescent bulbs that are old and there is a yellow hue. And of course- THE PARKING. The worse parking ever. Used to get there back in the day by about 11:05 and it was still packed and wouldn't be able to walk in until 11:30ish while I waited outside for someone to leave.
If they were open 24/7 still, then just maybe I could see the appeal of getting a specific membership here but nah, not worth it.

Im a traveling healthcare worker on contract at the hospital nearby this Golds. This location is perfect for before/after shift workouts. The staff is very nice, always available and they do a great job keeping the place clean. I haven't been able to utilize the group fitness classes, Les Mills programs are always at least good if not great to attend. The classes aren't happening at a time that works well for 12 hour shift people, but I'd love to attend them if I could. This place has all the amenities, sauna, steam room, lap pool, towel service, showers, even some small things you didn't remember to put in your gym bag like mouthwash, soap, razor, tampons, hair dryer etc. They have a swimsuit dryer that actually functions! The lockers have combo locks on them already, which is SO nice to have peace of mind while I'm out getting my sweat on. Membership here includes access to other golds in the city, but they don't have all the perks like this one does. It's certainly worth the membership price to come here.

Elsa Villanueva the manager is extremely unprofessional and immature. I signed up online back in August 2021 and 2 weeks later the CDC then put out information about a second wave of COVID. I unfortunately do have juvenile diabetes and in turn have a suppressed immune system so I called 2 weeks after signing up to cancel. I spoke to the manager and she stated that she would request cancellation. Fast forward to November by bank account gets charged 120$ So I contacted her again and now she was stating I needed to put it in writing and send screenshots of transactions, so I did. Then I received the email confirmation that it was cancelled. Well I woke up today and I was charged 120$ again. So contacted her and she stated that there was a balance and that’s why there were additional charges. We went back in forth for a moment in disagreement due to lack of communication.. I then stated well due to my medical condition and COVID guidelines. I’ll go ahead and contact my cousin who’s a lawyer to draw something just to prevent any further charges. She then got defensive as if I was threatening to sue WHICH I wasn’t there is a huge difference between suing someone and filling legal document for reasonings. Anyhow she got very rude and she then stated she was going to hang up. Wow. So then I contacted headquarters, (which she stated that there was no one about her I could speak to, which was a lie) furthermore speaking to headquarters, they were able to resolve issue within 5 minutes professionally and we’re extremely kind. Also having to apologize for her behavior. Then they instructed me to send them an email documenting the entire conversation with her name. I called back to this gym and asked for her name. They refused to give it to me and transferred for me back to her. She did provide her name and then hung up abruptly. Also I did have the entire conversation recorded. Which I’ll be sending to headquarters. I recommend ALWAYS recording conversations when I comes to customer service, and it is your right to seek legal action if needed. And you should not be mistreated for doing so. Good luck guys. Stay safe.

Manager was nonchalant when I complained about really bad attitude by a staff member. I had been told the pool was always kept at 82 degrees. This is truly not the case for it is an outside pool with no cooling system. The staff member told me she was not responsible for the sun's heat. The manager said there were two sides to the story and did not properly address my complaint. He added he could not give credence to my grievance because he had not witnessed the incident.

if you are someone who wants to be inspired by people who are professionals and to make fitness a fun enjoyable and positive experience than you should come here. This is like a one to $200 health club that they are only charging $45 for. I’m almost scared to write this because I feel like people will begin piling in. Although the men and women here are extremely good looking and in very good shape there is no attitude, talking this is not a meat market. But rather people are friendly, people are helpful, and people make you feel like you’re part of a family or at least a community of winners who want to be in the best shape possible. Every location has an energy, and the energy here is south improvement while helping others. This has become a respite at my place where I recharge. So if you love your gym stay there by all means, And if you’re a mean prickly pear don’t come here. But if you’re a loving and kind person who wants to work really hard and change your life through changing your body and your attitude come say hi to Monica, or Elsa, the great year with a smile and help you get started on your way to amazing fitness experience. Problems with billing? These people help you out! And all of the members are incredible! COVID-19 concerns? Not here place is amazing plenty of equipment. There! I spilled the secret of my favorite gym ever in SAT.:-)

Looks nice but they require masks while every other gym in the city dropped that ridiculous requirement. Walked straight out after they told me to put one on

This Gold's Gym is a bit higher than other Gold's gym but it's well worth it. Always friendly staff! Nice brand new weight equipment! Bathrooms clean and stocked with nice aloe soap, mouth wash, shampoo and shave cream. Gold lining- there's a half mile track outside in front of this Gold's Gym with practice ball fields. Definitely a 5 star experience!

Deceptive communication and billing service. Last email from management stated that the gym is closed until further notice (09/20). They opened the gym back up in October without an update and started charging $60 a month. After 4 months of billing, they sent first notification of late fees. Just to clarify, I am not in any litigation with this franchisee, I paid the unfairly charged dues, pretty much a donation to their payroll. They do have a few good employees working in the Medical Center overnight shift.

Reopening without a notification is one of the most deceptive things a company can do during a global pandemic. They definitely played to the stereotype of "got-ya" gym memberships.

Also, the Sauna has mold and is broken 3 days a week! The pool isn't cleaned daily. Do what you will with that info :)

The billing and cancellation department make you come in for any billing and cancellation issue. They put a bill in my daughter's (who is 14) name after canceling months ago. Finally had to clear it up in person paying a total amount 180 dollars. Not handled properly, and not contacted in regards of the membership. While I was trying to handle this they made me pay up front and could not print the receipt. The manager was present but did not even have a conversation about the incident. Just very upset with the service, its not about the money, it's about the fact that I had previously cancelled and they put a bill in my daughter's name and sent it to a collection agency. Also was not contacted about the account in the fact that the cancellation was not previously processed and her account was still ongoing.

Don’t be surprised for the underrated stars!! They won’t even allow to have guest, even when the front desk iPads are showing guest registration page. When I talked to the general manager, he was only interested to give a bunch of excuses without even saying sorry or apologize. His excuse was that the guests are only allowed for tour! Well, how the guest will sign in if you don’t want to allow him/her in the gym for one hour!!. Even after I tried to explain that my guest was already vaccinated and a UHS employee he refused to allow my guest in. He was rude enough to say “you can take your guest to another location”
They simply don’t appreciate their members or comply to any other golds gym standards and regulation like any other location. I wonder why they didn’t put a sign to let people know the gym is not accepting guests. If they are doing something out of the normal, they better announce it. STAY AWAY AS MUCH AS YOU CAN because I sure will.

I've been coming here for ~4 years now and I can safely say it's my favorite Gold's in SA. Especially with all of the craziness in the world, people here seem to be more dutiful about wiping down equipment and adhereing to mask policy.

Parking lot is TINY and fills up every day during peak hours and there is nowhere else close by to park. About half the people using the lot aren’t gym members but the staff never does anything despite the sign saying non-members will be towed.

It's alright, the place is big
Equipment well spread out
Has that atmosphere
But it all depends on how many time's you go to the gym
Would you waste gas and membership money to get that workout experience or would you do it at home or a park.(ew... grammatical mistakes and inappropriate colloquialisms, everywhere)

Me and my father came here to compare this place with other fitness places. We only wanted to see the size of the swimming pool. We came and guy at the front door told us to wait so waited for at least 30 minutes. Nobody talked to us and assisted us. It would only take 5 minutes to show the pool and the personnel can’t even manage to spare that 5 minutes.

I reserve my 5 stars for the black card gyms that are cleaner, larger, and have more amenities. This gym is probably the best non-black card in NW San Antonio.

Although the perk of this location is that it is 24 hours and it has an outdoor track, I can’t give it more than two stars. It doesn’t feel very clean. The locker room seemed to smell. The parking outside is limited and difficult. The staff I’ve encountered have been nice. My partner and I both had the Gold Membership on a two year contract for $50 a month back in 2013. We got into a car accident early 2014 and had doctor’s orders that we could not work out. The rep cancelled one of our memberships but didn’t cancel the other’s and didn’t even freeze the account. We ended up paying more out of pocket to end our contract. After that we decided that Gold’s Gym was overpriced and overrated. Never again. Sorry.
