I’ve been going to HPG for three years now after seeing it my entire life going down Guad. When I joined the gym, I was 285 pounds and didn’t really know where to start. I’ve lost 70 pounds since then without losing muscle thanks in large part to this place. If you want to join a gym where there’s folks of all shapes and sizes, from serious powerlifters to bodybuilders to (now formerly) fat guys like me, without an ounce of judgement, with genuine community, etc., then look no further. I wouldn’t want to work out anywhere else. The trainers are great, even though I myself haven’t worked with them, they genuinely care. The equipment is solid. The staff is incredible. I could go on and on. I’ll be coming here forever!

Went in for a workout, staff saw me as a new person with frown. i was taping dumbell weights together and they got stupid on me as if i was gonna break steel. i was gently tapping. Never went back again and if they that weird who would. Much better places to go.

Love this place! Really great old-school bodybuilding/powerlifting gym that has had everything I've needed. Never super busy even at peak hours - I've never had to wait for equipment. They also don't play music which I really appreciate! Staff and other gym-goers have been friendly and respectful

Can't believe I waited so long to officially become a member of this time capsule gym. The owner is inviting, professional, and respectful to consumers. I highly recommend joining or dropping in as a guest if you are visiting. There is ALWAYS someone at the front desk HAPPY to answer any questions about the gym you are spending your hard earned money at. You don't have to email, wait, and still receive a rude reply from the owner like other gyms in the neighborhood. 10/10 would recommend going here!

Can’t believe I took so long to put a review. I’m on my way to going here for 2 years. What can I say?
The friendliest environment ever.
The retro/ old school feel to the gym gives it a lot of charm. The equipment may be old but everything you need for weight training is there and it’s all well-maintained.
The trainers who work at the gym are great and the staff running HPG are all friendly and helpful.
As a grad student, I need access to a gym that’s affordable but also not overcrowded. This is it. It’s less flashy and ‘techy’ but that’s why it works well. It allows me to afford coming here, get a good workout in, and not have to worry about vain aesthetics.

Spectacular gym.
They have all the essentials, great staff (shout out to Mason!), and a very relaxed atmosphere.
People really seem to know each other too which is nice, but you can still do your workout in peace if that’s your prerogative.
I also want to add that they have a nicely sized bike-rack!

Friendly staff, welcoming environment, and great selection of equipment. The photos and website can give you the impression that this is a hardcore bodybuilder/powerlifting gym, but it is truly open to all levels. The price is high compared to franchise gyms, but I believe the lack of crowding and healthy gym culture are what make it worth it. They have a 7-day free trial that doesn’t require any signup, so I’d recommend anyone who’s interested to give it a try.

This place is an Austin institution. Some of the machines were welded in the 80s or something like that. No frills, no classes... just tons of racks and people trying to get those gains. The management is super friendly, and I've loved the no-nonsense, pay-upfront contract prices.

Great old time gym type of vibe! It might not have a lot of newer, more up to date type of machines, but it has a LOT of really cool old machines that equally, if not moreso, lead to a great gym experience. This place also has a really great assortment of strength building equipment that the staff would more than happily help you learn how to use. Additionally, the staff there is super nice, and even though I was only staying in Austin for a short while, Mason happily cancelled the autodraft charge for me after the first month to save me money. If you're looking for a really cool, old-school, "get down and dirty" type of gym that has ample equipment and NO intitiation fee, then this is for you!

***Note: this review is really for the massive, tanned, veiny, muscle arm sculpture that graces the Hyde Park Gym entrance. I've never actually been inside the gym. ***
I first saw this beast of an arm as a child. I grew up nearby, and so it was common sight as my parents drove me down Guad. I remember it always piqued my curiosity, even awe. "Only people who have arms like that are allowed in" I used to think.
As Austin has continue to change and we see more and more businesses upgrade to Austin 2.0, I'm glad to see that this awesome sculpture has remained as a mainstay of the neighborhood. It continues to stir nostalgia in me every time I pass by.
I do think this iconic sculpture would benefit from a refresh by the OG artist, as the skin is starting to flake off like a bad case of eczema.
Otherwise, great gym! (as seen from the outside--I also like seeing folks diligently toning their bods doing circuit training in the lot--good work, gymgoers!)

Brother and I went here for a day pass for a workout, and damn was I impressed. They're a serious lifting gym that adequately accommodates bodybuilding, olympic weightlifting, powerlifting, and other strength disciplines. They have a bit of a dingy old-school vibe, but it's a very clean and friendly environment. Think somewhere you're not afraid to grunt and hiss and get a great workout in, but a beautiful place that's worth keeping pristine. Loved the environment, the people, and the equipment. 10/10 would lift here again. ONLY downside: it's not cheap... however, that's compared to Missouri standards, whereas it may be relatively normal in Austin, TX

Can’t say enough good things about this gym. Some of the things I love:
- diverse and down to earth clientele. I am so inspired by the women that work out here!!
- no contracts or other gym scams.
- nothing obnoxious. Tons of equipment, no music blaring, no weird group exercise, just a place where you can safely work out (and plenty of squat racks!)
- welcoming and community-oriented. I was a complete newbie to weightlifting when I joined. I hired one of the trainers based off of the owner’s recommendation, and I have felt so comfortable coming to this gym (as a 5 foot tall woman, nonetheless) for the past 1.5 years
- friendly but respectful front desk staff
If you are looking for a cool, low key, individually owned place to get strong, you’ve found it!

Great gym! Below are my only complaints:
*When people use the two benches as squat racks when the other side has plenty of squat racks.
*When trainers place their cups, binders, or butts on equipment that prevents others from using (e.g., sitting on a bench when conducting training, etc.)

Females beware.
The owner of this gym (BROOK) is aggressive and threatening. He accosted me while in the middle of a squat set yelling about paperwork my trainer was supposed to send.
My trainer had honestly forgotten about the request, but rather than wait for me to finish my set and/or wait for me to finish my workout and approach me professionally, he assumed malice and started yelling at me in front of countless other members. This same owner had previously thrown shade and was generally unfriendly.
The other guy that works the desk Alan is nice and the gym doesn't blast horrid music like other gyms do.

There's something really nice about going to a gym that is just a good ol' fashioned gym. The staff is friendly and the members work hard. It's very motivating to see these people and work out around them.
I'm about 6 months pregnant and wanted to hire a trainer to help me build muscle so I'd be able to bounce back soon after delivery. Josh Trammell has been working with my husband and me for a few weeks now and I have seriously never worked out more hard and confidently in my life.
Josh has been very strategic in how he develops our workout routines. He makes sure we understand and practice proper form and body movements before we really push it. After about 3-4 weeks of training 3 times a week, I've gone higher in my upper body weights than I ever have in my life (I was very much a beginner, but without the accountability, form training, and encouragement of a trainer like Josh, I could hardly make the same kind of improvements on my own).
HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend Josh's personal training services at Hyde Park Gym. I'm gonna be a damn fit pregnant lady by month 9.

I’ve been coming to Hyde Park Gym (HPG) for years and consider it my second home. This gym has plenty of equipment to put in serious work, whether you’re a strength athlete or someone looking to improve their health.
HPG may look intimidating (due to the old school atmosphere and giant flexing arm), but you’ll quickly realize it’s everything but. The people I’ve met here are kind, supportive, and a pleasure to be around. They even re-rack their weights!
For membership plans, HPG have several options: day passes, 10 visit punch cards, weekly, monthly, quarterly, biannually, annually, and recurring plans via PayPal. They offer a trial week for Austin residence that want to try HPG for the first time.
If you’re looking for a gym with:
- A good community
- plenty of free weights
- access to Olympic weightlifting, powerlifting, and strongman equipment
- day passes and a several membership options
then HPG is the gym you want.

Back in the early 90’s I first set foot in this old school gym. I trained here till 2002 before leaving the city. I’m came back and tried another gym because of it’s close proximity, but after many years there, I’m back home in the gym that started it all for me. This place looks intimidating with the massive flexed arm jutting out of the building, and yes, there are some serious athletes, but also some old timers and, what would be considered “normal looking” people. The one common thread is that everyone is friendly and most will gladly share a piece of gym equipment if needed.

I love this gym and I will never ever go to a different gym. My company has a gym in it and I still drive the 10 minutes out of my way to go to Hyde Park. Everyone in this gym is there to have a good ass work out. They're not there to hangout, to play on their phone, or to take it easy, they're there to pick up some heavy ass weights. I was visiting Austin for a week for a conference and bought a week pass here. I always like training at more serious and hardcore gyms, even when I travel. Although to many newbie lifters, hardcore gyms can seem intimidating, if you come in to do work, these are really great atmospheres where members get to know each other and support each other regardless of goal (just get in shape, lose some pounds, or something more extreme like competitive powerlifting or bodybuilding).
The gym is an old school facility. Much of the equipment could be in a fitness museum. Belts, chalk, lots of racks and platforms, 1980s era bodybuilding posters from local shows give it an old school vibe. However, it is kept clean, which is not always the case at some old school gyms. Solid gym.

I've been working out at Hyde Park Gym for the past few months and I have to agree with the rest of the 5-star reviews here, it's awesome.
No frills, no show-offs, no "I'm in better shape than you" attitudes, just people trying to get better.
Everybody I've encountered so far has been extremely nice and welcoming. I especially like that they open the doors up and let a breeze come through - it feels more natural that way for me instead of being inside a high-tech open room that has a TV everywhere you look.
If you're looking to get in better shape, don't want to deal with anything extra, want a convenient location, and simply work out - this gym is for you.
I don't think you'll ever be disappointed working out here.

Great gym. Went to it twice while visiting Austin. True powerlifing gyms are few and far between. There was lots of equipment you don't see in most gyms (plenty of squat racks, thank god) but plenty of stuff for even the casual gym goer. It was nice to see a good mixture of men and women when I went which was nice to see. All of who seemed to take things pretty seriously but most importantly it was a positive motivating environment to work in.
I wish there was something like this in Houston were I work. If I ever end up moving to Austin I'll be sure to live nearby to this gym.

Best gym in austin. Caters to hardcore, olympic lifters, bodybuilder's, crossfitter's and the like. Plenty of squat rack's, bumper plates, lifting platform's, GHDs, Reverse hyper, all kinds of leg presses, etc.Very friendly staff
