They sold me a 6mo personal training membership only to learn the gym would be closing for rennovations 2 months in. and they expected me to still pay the rest of the 4 months for an empty building, which was hundreds of dollars. Was a huge pain in the butt for them to make this right, and now I still can’t cancel my standard membership unless I travel to one of the further away locations because they refuse to cancel over the phone and the website is broken.

The personal trainers were helpful but they were also stretched too then, good luck finding a time that works with a normal 9-5 schedule.

I signed up for a new membership and personal training sessions at LA Fitness Slaughter Ln location in August, only to find out from another member in September that the gym would be closing in October for an extensive remodeling with no ETA on the reopening. At no point during sign-up was I informed of this major change. Had I known, I absolutely would not have joined, as the alternate location is 8.2 miles away and one a good day in with no Austin traffic would take 30 minutes to get to—completely inconvenient for my schedule.
When I requested to cancel both my membership and training sessions, I received a cancellation email. However, I later discovered that only the membership was canceled, and I was still being charged for six training sessions in October—for a gym I could no longer reasonably access. Despite explaining the situation, LA Fitness has refused to refund the charges for the training sessions.
This experience has been incredibly frustrating and feels deceptive. I expected transparency and better customer service from a national gym chain. I strongly caution others from joining this gym!

Gym frequently has the out of order sign on several machines, equipment, spa and sauna. Staff are friendly but they can't do anything about it. It looks like that probably was foreshadowing of their closure. Maybe another gym will open in the space with a better ownership group.

This was a totally decent and affordable gym until very recently where a ton of equipment was swapped out for older and worse stuff. Machines that had never had any issues were removed and instead we have this clearly weathered machine with no safety pin or clamp or anything. Many other machines are like this, with a number of the replacements breaking within days of being brought in. Most of the Lat pull down machines and a spotted rack were removed with no replacement at all. I’ve been coming here for years with no complaints but this is enough to get me browsing nicer gyms in the area. Bring the good machines back please! Or at least replace them with similar quality… I’ll update my review back to five stars when the gym is nice again…

They are closing this location soon and have not given their members any advanced notice. They are replacing all the working equipment from this gym with old broken equipment from another of their gyms, all while still charging for memberships. They have stopped caring for and cleaning the gym, it is unsanitary. This will be the last time I ever join an LA.

This gym was mediocre at best. Most of the time many machines were down due to over use and were not fixed. Not to mention handle bars and other equipment so worn down you can’t even use them correctly. On top of this I go to cancel our account with Carlos and instead of canceling our account he put our account on a freeze. Yet failed to mention that he was doing this and that I would be charged 10$ a month just to keep it in this “frozen” mode. Seems like alot of miscommunication coming from their staff and a reason to charge people more money with absolutely no remorse. It’s sad that companies like this can have absolutely no moral code to treating their customers right. Just another number to add to the paycheck just like every other money grabbing company out there. I would not recommend going to this gym unless you don’t care about how you are treated and only want mediocre equipment and care as a customer.

I have been going to this location for a few days while my regular club has been closed down for renovations. I thought my club was bad but this location is far worse.

First off, the smells are horrible. In particular, the smell in the men's locker room is unbearable. The restroom area smells tolerable so it seems like something must have died in the locker room portion. Other areas smell bad as well but the locker room is the worst.

Much of the equipment is rusting and several machines, both cardio and weights, are out of service. It just feels like LA Fitness has given up on this location.

I wanted to share my recent experience with LA Fitness and urge others to be cautious before signing up for a membership.

Cancelling my membership has proven to be an incredibly frustrating process. I was informed that I must submit a letter to the main office detailing my reasons for cancellation, which seems excessive and inconvenient. After not using their facilities for nearly two years, I attempted to cancel my membership but was originally told by customer service that it had already been cancelled.

Despite not providing my new credit card information, LA Fitness accessed my bank account and charged me a late fee of $101.32. This whole experience has been ridiculous, and I would strongly advise anyone considering a membership here to think twice. I will certainly never return to LA Fitness again.

This gym has not been kept up with since my last review and it shows. For some reason the locker room perpetually smells like sewage and makes me gag! Lots of broken machines. Kind of dirty. Unfortunate and makes me consider canceling my membership tbh bc all the other reviews say the same thing and no one seems to do anything to improve the conditions and this gym is not cheap.

The kids camp definitely did not seem to be staffed well, didn't really feel like the kids were being adequately watched. They have a sauna, it’s almost always broken but you might be able to use it a couple times before it breaks again. This place smells like weed, has mold on the ceiling, and equipment is constantly broken.

This location has gone downhill. Been coming here for 8 years but a lot of the times machines are out of order for weeks even months. In comparison to the many locations I've visited in Texas, this one is the worst. The equipment is not well maintained & popular machines are lacking. There should be more then just one or two of the mostly used machines to accommodate members, especially on busy days. I found many machines down, torn up dumbbells & no designated are for training sessions. In many of my 30-60 minute paid training sessions, we couldn't use equipment because people park & don't move on to something else. The sauna is always broken. The women's bathroom is always stinky, dirty and gross. The staff is friendly but I'm seriously considering ending my membership soon.

I am a long time member of the slaughter lane location of LA fitness, and up until a few weeks ago a very happy one.

One of my favorite things at this location is the men’s sauna. Even with its frequent downtime, I’ve been very understanding. However, since its last fix, the temp is kept between 180-190. I’ve spoken to multiple members in the room who agree it’s way too hot and it’s normally closer to 160.

I’ve always believed in killing with kindness, so I’ve asked the staff here 3-4 times to please reduce the heat as the members find it way too hot. As of today, the temp was around 184 and I could only stay in the room about 4 minutes.

I have no idea what to do since the staff here seem to be flat out ignoring me. Might be time to find a new gym if this is how they treat members

This review is long overdue. This gym is falling apart—every day, something new is broken. The sauna has been "under repair" for months but has just been off since November. The pool and hot tub close randomly with zero notice, so if you drive there just to swim, good luck. You’ll be turning right back around.

The cleanliness is just as bad. Dust collects in corners, under treadmills, and around the weight area—clear proof this gym never gets a deep clean. If you have allergies, prepare for misery. Some treadmills even have rust and mold. It’s DISGUSTING.

My friends and I have had enough. We’re all canceling our memberships this week—about 20 of us. But let’s be real: management won’t care. They never do. Every negative review is spot on, and nothing ever changes.

LA FITNESS: What exactly are you doing with our membership fees? Because it’s certainly not going toward maintenance, cleanliness, or basic communication with your members.

Update 2/21/25 - Membership cancelled on 2/19 through their main website, but they tried to charge me twice for this months dues (have proof of cancellation). I figured they would and because I don't trust this company, I turned off my card on file.

Bait and switch location: Slaughter and Mencheca.

There's a sea of broken equipment, and all the 5:30 cycle classes cancelled since I've joined (joined end of December). .

The woman's sauna has been broken since 12/27 when I toured the place. I paid the equipment fee of $59.00 a month later yet equipment is still down.

Then I made two appointments to get my measurements checked (as part of a membership) and both were cancelled (no show on gym's part) so had to leave gym twice on two separate times.

If we pay an annual facility fee and nothing gets fixed, what is the $59.00 for, padding an account?

This facility is just a front to make money, but 🚫 deliver.

I'm going to find a new gym, I do my research and will post what I find.

This gym is gross. I dirty gym is A SAFETY HAZARD! The gym floor is dusty. The men's locker room is atrocious. The sinks look like they are never touched, hair sits in the bottom, old toothpaste stains, old moisturizer stains, you name it, its there. The showers have hair in them. One of the light fixtures has been out since I joined. The toilets and urinals don't appear to be cleaned daily. Soap dispensers go days without being refilled. The floor is so dirty that I just picked up a broom that someone left out and started sweeping myself!

The sauna has been on and offline for several weeks now. There are a slew of down cardio machines. The basketball floor needs to be refinished as well. There is cable machine that just needs a new cable, they can't seem to get that done. I mean even the "T" in the LA FITNESS sign outside is out. "LA FINESSE" everyone out of there money!

I know we aren't paying Equinox money to workout here but it doesn't matter if it is a Planet Fitness, Crunch Fitness, Anytime Fitness, 24 Hour Fitness, or LA Fitness, the gym needs to be clean for the safety of everyone!

While this location has been updated in recent years, there was a foul odor wafting throughout that smelled like sewage.
Several machines throughout either had signs for maintenance or required some tuning up (ie: bikes don't run smoothly, video screens don't turn on, etc).
Additionally, while there were indications that there were employees there (coats, bags behind the desk), there wasn't anyone at the front desk the entire hour+ that I was there.

She keeps us challenged by regularly changing the routine and giving us challenging aerobic and strength workouts. Sunday mornings is my hardest workout of the week taught by the indefatigable Melinda V. If you want a fast-paced cardio workout with weights and abs, I challenge you to try Melinda's workout. Tuesdays and Thursdays the amazing Rufina O teaches excellent strength and HITS classes. We always get a great workout from her classes.

Main issue is that the gym is too busy for the ammount of equipment that breaks vs time it takes to replace or fix it. Ropes and different handles for pulley machines are also not plentiful enough for how many there are.

Ok - so my rating is not a reflection of the staff, as they seem to be trying to work with what they're given and have always been polite, but I've recently cancelled my membership here after a year. Because, after about 6 months into my membership, things started to slip downhill fast.
Yes, there always seem to be broken equipment, which is common for a gym this size and with a high volume of members. However, it takes a LONG time for the machines to get fixed. And not just the machines: one of the water fountains always seems to be broken, half the sinks in the men's locker room do not work (and neither do the paper towel and soap dispensers).
But my main issue has been the Kids' Klub. For the last 6 months, I've had to call to make sure there is someone actually working there. I've also been put on 3 different lists to notify me when no one is there, but have shown up many a time to find it closed with no warning. I've also shown up, only to have to wait for up to 30 mins for someone to clock in. At one point, when no one was there, they put the janitor in charge of the kids. The janitor. Yes, he's a nice guy, but I'm assuming he's not qualified to watch children. Also, there's 1 person working there who is in charge of up to 12 kids. So needless to say, my kid has gotten hurt there a few times (there has been busted lips and bruises, it's like Thunderdome in there). One child in particular hits my kid every time he's there. Today, he hit my son in the head with a shoe. I'm not sure what the protocol is, but I'm not sure the other parent is being notified considering it keeps happening and seems to be escalating.
With school starting up, we had enough and went to cancel. However, when my wife went to cancel, she was notified that there wasn't a manager in charge to authorize the cancellation. And I don't mean no manager a duty: I mean NO MANAGER. She had to go to the South Lamar location to cancel.
Again, the staff has always been kind and helpful, but they seem to be struggling with management issues, and it seems to be coming at the corporate level. Until that gets fixed, I would not suggest bringing your child to the Kids' Klub.

Do not give this place your phone number! I was looking at options for gyms last month and I checked this place out and they asked for my number and I gave it to them. Now I'm getting calls three to five times a week, and no one is even on the other end; I answer, and there is five seconds of silence before they hang up. It'd be one thing if they were calling to follow up on the tour, but this is just unceasing spam!

Great gym, terrible environment. I never seen a business just be okay with their property just being trashed, everyday the lot is disgusting and they just let the homeless hangout and camp on sight. They come every day to use their outlets and power freely and are always harassing the guest. If they turned the power to the outside outlets off they would stop coming back and ruining the experience

For weight-lighting & strength training, this gym is pretty terrible. In fact, it’s so bad I think they might be intentionally making it terrible. Here’s why:

1. There’s no seated cable row machine. Yes, you read that right. There is only one double cable machine that kinda works if you tie the lines together. That’s it, that alone should make you find another gym.
2. There are no micro weight adjustments. I bring 12.5lbs of micro adjustment weights in my gym bag every time I go here because they don’t have any. Let’s say you want to use the awful pseudo cable row machine. You either bring in your own weights or you can only adjust by 15lbs!!! You can’t progressive overload here unless you bring in your own equipment.
3. The ratio of equipment is way off. There’s simply not enough dumbbell benches. There’s only one leg press. Theres about 50 aux machines but only about 7 benches. This is a busy gym. Only sign up if you go to the gym in off hours.
4. Hours: they close at 8pm on the weekends. This may or may not be an issue for you but it’s certainly not an extended hours gym.
5. There’s not enough cable grips. This one is actually funny. For some reason the people who work here decided to buy 6 cable machines and stock the entire gym with only about 1 of each grip. It’s possible you will find a cable machine that isn’t occupied, you won’t be able to use it because there’s not enough grips lol. I have to bring my own grips to the gym everyday for this reason (so far I’ve spent over $300 on gym equipment to bring into this gym)

I like lifting. So I’m not going to mention how dirty it is or the customer service or spa. That doesn’t matter.

I will say there is one amazing thing about this gym, the dumbbells go up in weight in 2.5lbs increments. Amazing, truly, that’s really cool to see

The reviews are true. This place is gross.

The locker rooms have never been cleaned. There is a green set of clothing that will get thrown onto the benches and stuffed into a different locker instead of thrown away. The floors in the locker room are gross.

If you have to use the toilet there is a good chance that there may be no toilet paper. Careful with that pre workout.

There are six stairmasters. Only one works. Every other elliptical is broken down. This place is not maintained what so ever. Do yourself a favor and skip this one. It’s not it.

The people at the front desk will ignore you 90% of the time. They are on their phones or personal computers. No reason to hide because no one cares.

All the previous negative reviews are true! I joined this gym 10/23 and it’s been down hill since then. In January they even had power go out and I thought they were going out of business since everything inside was also broken down. Sauna, every other cardio machine, water fountain… they were all down.
It is 3/24 now and it’s still pretty bad.
The sauna benches are ran down, the toilets are always a mess (at one point there was a line to go in to the only clean toilet!!!!), and only a few sinks work.

I have been a member of this gym since it opened, and an la fitness member for years even before then. I have become more and more frustrated with them over the last few years. Constant equipment failures, broken water fountains, blocked off and out of service handicap restrooms and missing equipment accessories ( handles for cable machines etc)
An integral part of my workout is the stair climbing machine for my arthritis in my hips. But of the 6 of these machines in the building, 4 have been out of service for at least 2 months, perhaps 3. As this is a popular piece of equipment there is always a long line for them. When I asked about the repair timeline the guy at the front desk laughed and said he had no idea. Apparently there is only one person who services every location from austin to san antonio. This is ridiculous. It seems like all the equipment is falling apart, and very little effort to maintain anything is made. I am seriously considering taking my membership as well as my wife and sons elsewhere if they don't get their act together soon. The only reason I havent so far is purely how close they are to my house.
Please get someone on top of this! I miss my gym being a nice place to excercise

Tried signing up and was completely talked down to by Wayne.

I went into the gym on Saturday for a tour and to discuss pricing. He offered a ‘today only’ deal and I said I needed to check one more gym before making my decision. After the second tour, I tried calling back for some clarification and find a way of making the sign up work for both parties. It is now Wednesdayand I got the call back to be told the other gym I was looking at sucked and I was SOL because I left the gym on Saturday. Very rude and unfortunate as I would have liked to have started a membership, here.

Amenities are always broke or unavailable. I’ve never been to an LA Fitness or other “high quality” gym as grimy or run down as this. Sauna, water fountain, and equipment is truly always broken. Basketball courts are unavailable (which is a huge amenity) and they didn’t even email members to let them know it’d be unavailable for days. When we signed up we were told they’d have open play volleyball and you could use the studio when classes weren’t in session. Since the beginning of the year they’ve never put the nets up and now have signs everywhere telling members not to go in the studios unless attending a class. Pool is always dirty. It’s just really poorly run.

La Fitness does have a big space for basketball, and a variety of classes however the lady Rufina needs to change it up she does the same thing over and over. When she gets there she talks to much and starts the class late I under stand she is the next one to do the zumba that by the way is the same songs all the time same routine. The class ends at 6:45 pm and she waits 15 minutes to start the other one just so her friends get there on time while we wait. The bike trainer does the same thing does not change it. I think they need to add another class like Body Pump and Les Mills classes like Golds Gym. Other than that is clean the staff is friendly and spacious space to work out.

No towels. Aggressive membership tactics. Pool is kinda busted and usually a lil dirty. But it's only like 50 bucks a month. They will try and push "private training" membership on you if you do the "free session" but it's all upper management breathing down there necks. When I left after not signing up for the personal training membership I saw the guy that gave me the session getting reprimanded for not selling it to me hard enough. Made me feel bad honestly. I've been going here for 7 years. About to switch to something better. It feels like a $20/month gym that I'm paying $50/month for. The space and equipment is okay when it works. But there's always stuff breaking and there's no priority to fix it. The main water fountain has been broken for about 3 months. No one can seem to answer when it will be fixed or if it's even on their radar.

Only giving this a 2 star bc they just fixed their sauna.

I’m honestly so shocked at how dirty this gym is. EVERY Austin location is like this too. I just moved over from Golds hoping for a higher end experience. Especially since I’m paying more money per month. Instant regret. The Golds off Congress and slaughter is so much cleaner, staff is more engaged, and over all ran better.

This LA, along with the rest, needs to invest in more sanitary stations and keeping the gym clean as a whole. The level of dust everywhere is so gross. The last thing I want to see while I’m breathing heavily in the middle of a set is the pile of dust on the machine I’m using.

The bathrooms are subpar at best. Definitely will never be in there without shoes on.

I’m not sure if management needs to invest more in their team so the team buys into where they work or what. But something needs to change across the board with the Austin La fitnesses. Even the signature club up north was a let down.

Not a fan of paying near $50 a month for these conditions.

I was a new member bringing a guest with me to try a gym class. She had signed up for a guest pass and I thought we were good to go to a class as informed by a member of the front desk staff earlier (I had made calls on several occasions to verify their guest/class policy and was still confused due to varying information). When we walked in, a man named Tim, who I later found out is the GM of the facility, greeted us and immediately was very abrasive when I told him we were here to attend a class and said we could have come 5 minutes earlier and overall gave a very harsh attitude for no real reason. Although it ended up being a misunderstanding between us and the front desk staff because they miscommunicated information, he could have approached the situation in a less disrespectful way, especially as the GM of the facility. It gave me a terrible impression of the gym staff, you don't talk to people like that. Overall, disappointed.

I was a member here for about three months. The interior of the building was shabby and dilapidated, equipment was old and always under repair. Then there was the rude and oblivious front desk staff. They very rarely were able to answer even the simplest of questions and couldn’t even be bothered to give me a quick tour of the gym. Worst gym experience ever.

I enjoyed the yoga, aqua and sit and fit classes in San Diego during my visit to California.instructors were great and very welcoming. Unfortunately on one of the days, the water got turned off at Eastlake location and we didn't get alerted. So there was a lot of disappointed women in the bathroom. We could not take a shower, wash hands or go to bathroom. That should have been handled differently. Such as workers walking around or by a loud speaker announcement telling people what was happening so that they could plan their workout accordingly. I did see one notice by lockers after getting out of the pool. Yet they continued to allow people into facility. Which didn't seem right.

In the one of slaughter ln and manchaca, the jetz of the hot tub don't work since a year ago and they don't care about it. The classes are horrible and the few good ones like yoga and pilates are always changed, canceled or too crowded. It is a disgrace! If you want to cancel your subscription they tell you that you can do it in working hours mo-fri9-5pm so you will need to take hours from your job to do it . In general, this locarion is terrible.

I really enjoy the LA Fitness on Slaughter and Manchaha because they have a big variety of machines, free-weighs, plus a pool and a friendly staff. Joining this gym was a critical step in helping me prepare for joining the Navy. Between this location and South Lamar, I’m really considering finding a new gym that actually cares about their members especially when it comes to complaints and concerns of the gym. When you tell the front desk (of course management do not work past 5 or 6pm on the weekdays and off weekends) about issues going on in the gym, they pretend like they care but in reality, they don’t. There are a bunch of college kids and/or regular people who work the front desk but their only concern is to collect a paycheck but never handle any of the complaints. Not only that, this gym location is not even clean. In Round Rock, the LA fitness locations are much more cleaner than the Austin locations. The pool area, where they have daily swim classes every week, is gross and NOT CLEAN. The women’s locker room is filthy, and has a weird smell near the shower/restroom area (smell has been bad for about a month now) and the restrooms aren’t thoroughly clean also. The sinks never seem to have soap in them, and overall, it’s just a mess. Needless to say, some of the workout equipment hasn’t been repaired in weeks. I never had these issues when I was going to other gyms. Lastly, there are always some rude people in the locker rooms who are passively aggressive. When you bring all of these issues to the front desk, Wayne aka the sales guy, or even management, they don’t even do anything about it.
