We aren’t your typical gym, we’re a boutique personal training studio training the human body the way it’s designed to function, and build muscle and strength that translate to every day movement. Our team of trainers are certified Human Biomechanics Specialists that work to uncover muscle dysfunctions that restrict how your body moves and restore muscular imbalances that cause weakness, instability, and pain. Our workouts are all encompassing; we train strength, flexibility, mobility, core, cardio, injury prevention, and rehabilitation all in one! We design exercises to solve problems on your body that other styles of training don’t account for, so you can feel what it’s like to move without pain!

Michael was absolutely amazing. He was able to tailor his understanding of body mechanics to my functional needs and it showed through the progress. I’ve done physical therapy on and off for years and within the 2 months I working with Michael I saw and felt more progress than I have in the past years. I would 10/10 recommend trying Functional Fitness out. There’s a big difference between functioning through the pain and injuries and being functionally fit and aware through the movements. At 57 years old I didn’t have aches and pains but I had weak ankles and a tendency to trip, and after watching my 82-year old Mother’s amazing progress with Michael and Manny at SA Functional Fitness, I decided to call. Over the past four months, my experience with SA Functional Fitness has been nothing short of transformative, thanks to the expert guidance of my trainer, Manny. When I first started working with Manny, I was dealing with persistent lateral knee pain that had plagued me for over a decade. Despite trying various treatments and exercise routines, nothing seemed to work—until now. Under Manny’s personalized and attentive coaching, not only has the pain completely disappeared, but I've also gained a deeper understanding of how to maintain joint health and prevent future issues.

I continue to greatly benefit from my work with Manny at SA Functional Fitness. I came in with chronic SI joint issues and knee pain from arthroscopic surgery ten years prior. I am a former runner and a spinning enthusiast. I had also done a decade or two of hot/Bikram yoga and joints had likely become hyper-mobile. I had often sought relief for my SI pain through chiropractic work and restorative yoga, but I found that the treatments often delivered no relief or made things worse. At SA FF I was first given a movement elimination protocol (no yoga, pilates, kettlebell workout or cycling) while my SI joint calmed down and healed. Manny assessed the problems in my movement mechanics and has tailored a program to address them. The workouts are varied and challenging and fun. I've had steady progress in improving my weight distribution and even feel as though my knee is healing, which seems miraculous. As I have made progress or revealed weaknesses he has adapted the program to keep me moving forward. Manny's knowledge about the Functional Patterns methodology is deep and I recommend him heartily. I have simultaneously (and slowly) been working through the FP Ten Week Online Program, which complements the work in the studio.

I have tried physical therapy, chiropractors, all types of different massage therapy, but they are all band-aid like fixes, nothing long term. SA FF helps you discover any muscle compensations or imbalances you have throughout your body, and works with you to help fix your bio-mechanical movements through different functional movement patterns.
It may seem cliche, but SA Functional Fitness has no doubt changed my life in the way that I move, the way that sit/stand, and the way I view fitness. I couldn’t recommend anybody better if you are in a constant state of chronic pain.

After hearing about the work SA Functional Fitness was doing with my 80 year old mom, I went to them to help me "recalibrate" my body, which tends to be too flexible, leaving me at greater risk of injury. The work makes structural sense and looks easy, but it is deceivingly challenging in the best of ways. I can already feel a greater strength and structural integrity within my daily movements and my other workouts. Some weaknesses noted by other fitness professionals are finally being addressed, which will better prepare me for the active life I intend to keep living. I have loved the experience training at SA Functional Fitness. I joined this fitness center at the beginning of the year. I am a 75 year old female and needed to build muscle in my sagging arms. Shelly taught me so much about major muscle groups in my body. I can’t believe and I’m so glad this gym exists! The gym is not the typical gym. It is centered around teaching good biomechanics.

I’ve gone twice a week for a period of time and once a week and when I went twice a week I saw major changes, I did nothing outside the two hours a week and my abs, my arms, my back, everything was very noticeably much more defined. It’s working smarter, not harder!

And my posture, which was the reason I went in the first place is permanently improved! I feel so much better!

I like that I learn there and that it is knowledge I will always have.

Shelly is my trainer and it is like she has x-ray vision and can easily see what is going on and give quick, simple cues to correct it. In making a little change I feel a big difference right away.

It is so cool this place exists!

I’ve been working with Shelly at SAF for a few weeks and have already noticed a difference. I’m a former athlete that always just pushed through pain, but now pain is catching up to me and showing up in places that challenge my everyday activities. With Shelly I’m learning to move my body the way it is supposed to move to align myself and strengthen the parts of me that I have never focused on. I love Functional Fitness! San Antonio is so lucky to have them. As a former pro athlete, I have sustained a lot of injuries and tried just as many methods to rehab/ proactively strengthen them. After almost 10 years of dealing with some of the same issues, I had given up hope of living free from chronic pain and the occasional flare up that would knock me out for a couple days. Working with Michael has really changed that. Functional Patterns is so different from any other methodology I've tried, but I'm hooked! There is a certain level of baseline pain that I am used to being in, and I think there's an attitude in a lot of pro-athlete settings and other fitness models that at a certain point, you just have to grin and bare it. Michael is super intentional, and he works with me every time to make sure I am challenged in a way that is going to make me better, stronger, and more fully integrated, but not more injured. Each session is different, fun, and completely exhausting, but not injury provoking. FP feels so much more efficient than any other method I've tried. I cannot say enough good things about this gym, and if you're in the SA area, no matter your background or experience level, I highly recommend them. I only wish I'd found them sooner.

San Antonio Functional Fitness has been an answer to what I’ve been looking for. I first met with Michael and discussed my issues and history in detail. My issues, in a nut shell are, at 45 years old, my body hurts, and I have bad knees, and traditional exercise formats were only exacerbating those conditions. I would find my self working hard and getting injured working out, then having to take time off. Frustrating!

I needed something to break the cycle and get to the root of the issue for me. This gym and the Functional Pattern approach seem to be giving me answers. I’m getting relief, I’m targeting the root issues in my gate, posture, and day to day movement. After 12 weeks, I feel like I can see a light at the end of the tunnel. It takes intention, but if you are dealing with pain, stiffness, and or injury, I believe you will find answers here as well. Shelly has been my main coach and she is the perfect blend of being a great listener, maximizing our time together, and pushing me! She takes time to message me ideas even on days I’m not there! She was the perfect fit!

However, everyone at this practice is living out what they are coaching, and are very engaged with your progress at all times. You will be blessed by any coach you work with.

Thank you SA Functional Fitness! Since I have stated training here in 2018, I have noticed a 90% reduction in the amount of times my back goes out every year. And I I think it can still get better.

With my training I have gained a new awareness of my body, that allows me to feel what muscles should activate with tasks such as lifting something off the floor and as simple as washing dishes. I have learned how to walk by using my whole body instead of kicking one leg in front of the other. I can now feel the sequence of muscles firing that I never experienced or been aware of before.

In the beginning of my training the simplest movements were frustrating because I couldn’t get my muscles to do what my brain was asking of it. The amount of concentration it took was intense. Now the movements still take a lot of concentration but everything is so much more fun because I know by the end of the session my body will be moving with fluidity and ease.

I’m 61 and haven’t exercised in a long time. I also have pain in my lower back.
I have been so impressed with Michael’s approach to exercise.
It doesn’t have to be high intensity to be beneficial, especially if you have pain.
But he finds very specific movements and teaches them to you so well that you can do many of them at home.

Staff here are quite friendly and patient. The owner, Michael, is very patient indeed; I ask lots of questions, and he is always able to come up with an explanation that makes me understand. Their methods may seem different to some, but the claim is they are based on movements natural to the human form and structure. In any case, Michael and his staff explain the purpose of all movements they ask of clients, and the pace is set by the client's needs.

I have been working with Michael for about eight months now and I am well pleased. I couldn't use my left arm much at all when we began (rotator cuff injury), but now I can. We are working to increase range of motion and strength, not to mention to balance with other muscle groups so I can avoid future problems. I have already recommended their services to three friends, and will continue to do so whenever the chance comes up.

I am a 39 F and have had some hip, knee and foot pains that I tried healing with Airrosti, Accupuncture, Massage, you name it I tried it!! I was worried if I was in this much pain at this age what would it be like in 20 years?! Nothing has worked as well as functional fitness. If your low back hurts after working out, like mine did, it shouldn’t!, and it hasn’t since I’ve incorporated this training. For whatever physical needs you have or want to improve this is the place to do it. The environment is wonderful, the trainers are caring and most importantly they LISTEN to you and make a plan surrounding your wants and needs. I’ve not had knee pain in well over a year, and no low back pain in well over 2 years now, thanks to SA Functional Fitness. You can’t go wrong with any of the trainers, I see them all depending on my schedule and they all know me, my body, and they work together to make sure their fitness plans are all tailored to me. It is also a comfortable environment, you get a lot of privacy with the way they are set up. And I know I mentioned caring, but I can’t overstate that. When I had any health issues arise (illness, blood pressure, stress/depression) they showed me they really cared for me as a person. Whether that was allowing me to move around my appointment if I was ill, or changing my planned workout to something that would feel better on my body and mind if I was going through a rough patch. I have been training at Functional Fitness for almost three years. I originally came to functional fitness to address shoulder issues that developed after shoulder surgery. Michael was able to help me gain more strength in my shoulder and I was able to get a greater range of motion. I started going to functional fitness because I began having trouble with my knees. Being in my twenties and have this problem really frightened me since the cracking and tightness wouldn’t go away and no medication or treatment would heal it long term. Functional fitness has helped me significantly at redirecting my daily body movements to function at the right balance and relief pressure off my knees. The inflamation has decreased and I’m more aware of having better posture while sitting or standing. Great trainers that will help you find the source of your pain or issue. I have worked with trainers in the past that didn’t listen to me and what my body was saying - the no pain, no gain mentality. In December of 2018, I could barely walk. Two falls on my right hip hadn’t broken anything, but something was definitely not right. After four failed attempts at physical therapy (three said we’re not helping you, don’t come back and I told one he was making me worse and refused to return), including a six month stay in Houston receiving PRP injections and other specialized therapies, all with no success, an amazing acupuncturist in Austin said what I needed corrective exercise. What the heck is that I asked. And so my journey began! When I returned home, I got on the computer and googled corrective exercise San Antonio…SA Functional Fitness popped up, I read about Michael and his approach and was able to schedule my initial visit online and the rest is history!

That was in April 2019. I’ve learned more about my body and what it can do in the last two years from Michael and his extraordinary team than I ever imagined! Correcting fifty years of bad body mechanics is no small feat! Turns out I’ve got something wrong at every level of my c-spine and l-spine, bilateral si joint dysfunction, kyphosis, arthritis, had a tendon transfer on my left foot, two surgeries on my right shoulder and a pretty intense case of medial epicondylitis. With everything going on with me medically, there have been many times we would have to go off script and accommodate whatever issue was causing the most problems and go from there.

I also have a pretty remarkable trauma history and complex ptsd; in short I have more triggers than a gun club! I have never run into an issue with Michael or Juan. They are some of the most professional, compassionate people I have ever encountered! If that’s not enough, I am also neurodiverse! Michael and Juan have always gone out if their way to work with me. I’ve never felt rushed or belittled because I didn’t understand or couldn’t get something. I ask a million questions and while I’m sure they hear similar things all day long, they treat every question like it’s the first time they’ve had to answer it! They recognize that every client is unique and customize approaches to get the best results!

It’s now been two years since I’ve been working with Michael and Juan and can honestly say I still learn something new everyday! Their approach to fitness has me up and moving again and I couldn’t be happier! I work out with them four days a week and am able to walk 2 to 5 miles most days! A far cry from where I started!!! They have taught me tools that I can use at home to help on days when my body isn’t as cooperative. I now have a solid base and haven’t fallen in two years! I used to have to drive with my headrest reversed, but I’ve been able to put it back in the correct position and drive comfortably. I cannot say enough positive things about Michael and Juan over at SA Functional Fitness!

It doesn't matter how old you are or what physical condition the professionally trained instructors work one on one with you to not only reach your goals but beyond what you ever thought possible. I started when I was 75 in poor physical condition now at 78 I move like I am 40 my family is in awe. So, what are you waiting for?
